This is the best vet I have ever been to besides my home town vet. We have been taking our pets there for 5 plus years now and have never been disappointed with the service. They saved one of our dogs life and our cats life. Our cat was a very sick kitten on death's door when I got her. They helped get her back to a healthy state and then found a tumor in her throat and removed that during her surgery to get spayed. We drive 30 minutes one way and it is always worth it. Read Less

There's a reason this is one of the cheapest vets in the area. We brought both our dog and cat in for their routine check-ups. Turns out they were short a doctor that day. Instead of giving us the option to reschedule, they squeezed everyone in. We never even saw the vet. One of the vet assistants came in and took the animals, took them into another room for literally a minute and no longer. Exactly long enough to get their routine shots. One, I've never been to a vet where we didn't get to see them administer the shots. Two, our cat is 17 years old and going down hill. We needed to talk to the vet to see what was wrong with him and have a full exam. They gave them shots and nothing more, but we still paid full price as if we got a full exam with a vet! I called to complain because our cat needed a full exam and that's what we paid for. The lady was extremely rude, argued with me and said I'd have to schedule another appointment. I asked to talk to the vet. Instead of talking to me, they just mailed me a letter "firing" me as a patient. So we had to pay another vet to do an exam and run tests. Turns out the cat is dying! I was referred here three years ago by about 20 other happy customers, and am glad I listened to them. The drive from SW CR is completely worth it, these people have a passion for helping animals and trying to keep it as affordable as possible. Best service and price around. I brought my pups here after sifting through recommendations on Facebook from other local dog moms. It's 30 minutes from our home, but seemed like a worthwhile trip for proper care for my babies. The clinic is clean and spacious. Normally, the waiting area of a vet is tiny and my giant dogs are squished up against other hyper or anxious animals - not the case here. Their services were reasonably priced and they didn't pressure us into extras or even using their pharmacy. The staff, however, did not live up to the acclaim. The reception staff are much more friendly than I found the tech and the doctor to be. In fact, this man seemed indifferent to the dogs and my concerns. Our primary reason for the visit was vaccinations, but I had some other minor concerns with my Doberman that were ignored. Not to mention, it really rubbed me the wrong way that they didn't seem interested in the dogs - what animal person doesn't greet and pet and acknowledge dogs at their feet?? Truly very off-putting. I had already decided to take the elsewhere for OFA but now thanks to this email. It makes me want to no longer do business with them at all!!!! And my dog was supposed to have surgery next week.. They kept my dog for three days, gave her the appropriate treatment and where very pleasant and attentive to me. The only reason i gave them four instead of five stars is the bill was really high and was a surprise when picked up my dog. We've had nothing but positive experiences with all the staff at AVC. Kind, compassionate, accommodating, knowledgeable and affordable. I've referred them to several people and I know they've had positive experiences too. We live in Marion and have since the 08 flood made us relocate and a few yrs after we looked for a new vet and I am so glad we found these guys. I wish I would have found them sooner. We called on the way over for an emergency visit after our two girls doggies got into a fight over my cat in our Christmas tree. Handled the dogs wonderfully and everyone is doing well now. On December 1, 2016, we made the very difficult decision to end the suffering of our 13 year old German Shepherd, Caesar. The last thing we needed was a struggle to find someone who would help us, as he was in too much pain to be transported anywhere. After contacting several CR vets, including the one we'd always used, and being told that a house call wasn't possible, I called AVC. The girl I spoke to on the phone (I wish I'd gotten her name) was very empathetic, and, even though it wasn't her job to do so, set us up for a home visit that same day. Dr. Darrow tended to our Rudy as a baby 16 years ago when he needed a horribly infected eye removed, Dr. Feuerbach (who is no longer there) performed a surgery on our Emily that improved her quality of life--and ours--immensely. Dr. Mackenzie graciously met me late at night 3 years ago when Rudy had to be put down. Dr. Rik and Dr. Lisa have both seen us emergently on Saturday mornings and their care gave us much more quality time with our elderly cat than I ever thought we would have. And Dr. Darrow fit us in just this morning when my beautiful Olivia finally had to go. I recommend this clinic to anyone. And, in my opinion they have never seemed to cut the quality of the service you and yours receives in order to cut costs. That and they offer Care Credit for a payment option as well. My family has taken our pets to the Anamosa Vet Clinic for years, and they are the best in the business. It is a very family oriented place so they know how a pet is part of the family and have always treated my animals like one of their own. I lived in Des Moines for awhile and would make the two hour trek to go there and have my pets seen. They are thorough during check ups and provide frequent reminders when your pet needs a vaccine update or lab draw. I have had a few scares with my pets, and they have always been kind and compassionate during my emergency visit. Dr. Darrow has always done a great job of explaining all the options, their pros and cons, and what he thinks is best for my pet. Not pleased at all. My dog and I waited for a half hour to be seen for probably 4 minutes. The vet burst into the door and scared my dog and made her bark, which she rarely does. She should've calmly walked in, got onto her level and let her sniff. You think a vet would know how to approach a new animal. It was a routine visit after being adopted and she also has a limp now so I had her checked for that too. All she did was look her over quickly and I had to prompt her to do more than that and check her heart and lungs. She didn't look at her pads, she didn't look in between her toes, she didn't look at all. She grabbed her foot and decided it was one of her toes and prescribed pain medicine. Said to give her that and rest for 2 weeks. If she's not better, come do an X-ray. My baby girl is not even 2 years old and needs her exercise. I'm really shocked that that's the best she did. The whole meeting with the vet felt like I was taking her for a walk and a stranger pet her and said hi and told me she would give her pain meds. I don't think we'll be coming back.Read Less

Took my cat to be declawed here and they messed up and didn't do a consultation before hand so they couldn't do all four paws, I was so disappointed till one of the gals said we can do the other 2 paw in 4 weeks and paid in full so I wouldn't have to pay the rest in 4 weeks. The gal did a great job at keeping to what I was quoted by phone. My cat didn't seem to mind the visit :) he doesn't seem to be in any pain either!
