Short summary at the end! I have a 5-year old cat with chronic eosinophilic granuloma. He has been to see many vets over his life for this problem. - just to give you an idea of my experience with vets. First, the room was lovely. It had a cat-tree in it and a rug. These things helped my very nervous little guy feel better. They took their time to allow my baby to get comfortable in the room. They spent some time with him themselves before doing anything just so he'd be more comfortable with them. They gave him lots of treats to help him see that this is a good place to be. - Their care and concern for their patient's comfort was PHENOMENAL. Truly, every staff member who interacted with my cat cared about his comfort and well-being. The examination was great. They were gentle while examining him, but also thorough. My guy was comfortable enough with it that they took the time to show me what the inside of his mouth was looking like - something he doesn't even let me look at. Of the handful of vets I've taken him to, these are the first ones that suggested he would benefit from a teeth cleaning and they are absolutely right in that suggestion. When they gave him his vaccine they had to poke him twice (he pulled away for the first one, not out of discomfort or pain, he just felt like stretching) and he didn't care about either needle insertion. They had him distracted with treats, so he didn't care. Eventually it was checkout time which was a breeze. They gave me a "new customer welcome" bag with a few goodies in it for both me and my cat. They made sure his prescribed medicine made it in the bag. I was also pleased with the price. For a thorough medical examination, two vaccines, and some medication the total came out to be around $125. This is comparatively similar to prices at the other vets we've been to, perhaps even cheaper, but these guys added so much more value than the other vets (not that the others were bad, but they weren't THIS good). Really great staff, and Dr. Terry and Dr. Sprague (I think, I may be spelling her name incorrectly) were great as well! Glad to have vets knowledgeable about rabbit care to keep my two bunnies nice and healthy! I cant say enough great things about this place. I moved to Iowa and before I had a chance to find a new vet my dog hurt her leg and didn’t know where to go. I’m glad I picked Ankeny Animal & Avian Clinic. Honestly it’s the best animal clinic I have been to. From start to finish the staff was kind, caring and understanding. I felt comfortable leaving my dog alone with them because I knew she was in good hands. If you don’t go to Ankeny Animal & Avian Clinic then you’re missing out on the towns best Clinic. -The atmosphere is very clean and uplifting. A nice area to sit and wait while your pet is getting taken care of. -Free Coffee, tea and snacks. While not critical , I think it says something about their level of customer service. It feels like they care about us here. Just from being a first time customer I received a goodie bag filled with treats for my pup and a few things for me. -Prices are very fair and the staff is transparent about all charges before they are incurred. I took our newly adopted rabbit (who came from the animal shelter) here for her first exam-and three days later too her to another vet to find that her ear itching was caused by a VERY nasty eat mite infestation. They make you feel like family. The Drs techs, and office staff are all very knowledgeable, professional, and caring. They take care of the people as well as their pets. Dr Gigler always takes the time to answer all of my questions and make sure she understands my concerns. The clinic is clean and well stocked. They are always looking for new ways to make the experience better for your pets. In good times and bad they are right there with you. Usually they are super friendly and nice people. So kind and gentle with animals. However this time around my sister took her dog in and they were adamant that what was wrong was a flea allergic reaction. This dog doesn't have fleas. It took some arguing and prompting to even get this vet to do a skin test. Once the test results came back we found out she had a severe skin infection. The vet proscribed pain meds and flea meds. The infection never went away and has only gotten worse. This is the best pet clinic I've ever been to, but this particular vet would not listen to the pet owner. Read Less

They did a great job of communicating with us during our puppy' s spay procedure and did a great job answering all our first time dog owner questions! My dog is older and it seems it is one health problem after another. I feel better getting everything repaired...lol. I was worried about her health issues, but the doctor throughly checked her out. We fixed what could be fixed, and I'm managing everything else the best at can. I shopped around since money's tight, but I decided I'd rather spend a regular amount- the services were about average priced- and get good care than be a cheapskate with my dogs health. I took her in for her dental cleaning and she got the royal treatment. Now she's all good to go until something else pops up. I'm glad at least I can relax with my girl and not worry about her. (In case you don't know-dogs are VERY good at hiding pain). I feel confident about the doctor opinion. Best veterinarian, techs, and office staff I've ever had! This team truly cares for the animals as if they are their own pets. They are so good with my highly anxious dog, doing whatever they can to calm him (which has not been my experience at other vets), and giving me helpful tips to try at home, as well. I had a emergency situation happen with my dog and after calling 2 other vet clinics in Ankeny, this was the only clinic that would see me immediately. They even called in another vet just to see my dog. I was crying and not able to give them much info over the phone, but all the staff were very nice and helped my dog right away. It's not the cheapest place in Ankeny to go, but I won't go anywhere else now. My dog's check ups are thorough, more than 5 minutes, and all their staff can answer my questions. We've been long-time clients and really appreciate having such a great vet clinic. The staff is great and all of the veterinarians are wonderful. We enjoy the new look of the remodeled office and like that they have a separate entry and waiting room for the cats. Honestly shocked at any negative reviews on here. The clinic and all of their staff are amazing. They have taken very good care of all four of pups. They've been through us with a parvovirus battle and a laryngeal paralysis surgery and many other things. The entire staff stayed late with our Max so we could take Bo home before heading off to the emergency room. I can't even begin to tell you how amazing the entire staff is. I was more than a little nervous about Kash's (Olde English Bulldogge) first vet visit, but he was miserable and needed some help. They got us in quickly and got him fixed right up. They also made sure we were comfortable about what needed to be done. They were all very welcoming and didn't make us feel rushed at all. You can definitely tell they love what they do!!! We had been very hesitant about going to a vet for a long time, but I'm so glad we chose the right one. Review for the dog behavioral training. After an incident with my large dog and a smaller dog it was recommended that I work with a behavioral trainer to be sure the incident wouldn't happen again. Emily Blythe was a magic worker! We worked with her for 10 weeks (2- 5 weeks sessions) and the difference in my dog is incredible. She is better able to control her impulses, she follows instruction quickly, and she is better behaved overall. I highly recommend this service if your dog has impulse control, aggression, or just needs to be taught a few manners. Read Less

The Animal Behaviorist at the AAAC is fantastic. We have a very reactive dog that would not have done well in a group setting. Emily realized this and set up private training (for us as much as Bandit) that allowed him to be successful. This is one of those times I wish I could rate so much higher than a 5*. This is by far the most amazing place ever. Our baby Mystik hadn't been feeling well and we took her here and I'm so beyond happy we were led on the right path of finding them. Mystik is our furry child along with all of our 2 legged kids she is a part of the family. We were very sad and hurting when we found out she is diabetic. But in the exam room Mattie and Dr. Gigler were beyond amazing. Taking so good care of Mystik and showing her love and care and not to mention us as we were in tears literally from the hard news and they were so comforting and helped us through it. To top it off Caitlin at the front desk was so sweet and was very kind to us as we checked out making our entire visit phenomenal. The rest of the staff were very kind and smiled and seemed just as nice. I can't possibly say enough nice things about this family atmosphere clinic. We will never take our babies anywhere else. Ankeny Animal & Avian Clinic was such a great experience for my family! I strongly recommend it, because when I called to set up a check up (our Doxie wasn't acting right and thought she was doing ok but but great) and got one for the end of the week. But after I got home she really wasn't doing great, called back and they got me in within a couple hours! Greatly appreciated it!! Chelsy and Kari tried their best to comfort her and made us all feel at ease. They also did an amazing job keeping our 2 1/2 year old distracted too! absolutely the best vet on the planet!  the staff has helped my boyfriend and i with difficult situations with both of our cats in a kind and compassionate manner. when on of our little guys was sick, they called the next day to see how he was doing. they are always available for advice and even when out of their way to address a negative experience we had with another vet. They do charge a little more than the average vet, but i have never received sticker shock from a bill. They are very clear about the cost and will explore many options to get the care my pet needs. the outstanding customer service they deliver is worth the cost. Read Less

This is our first vet for our first dog and we could not be happier! Our puppy is still young so we have only had a couple visits here, but I have a feeling it will be for the long term. We have heard stories about people we know taking their pets to big chain vets where they do not care about your pet, just about the bottom line. You definitely feel the staff and vets here actually caring about the welfare of your pet. The staff seems to all communicate well with one another because we would bring our dog in and they would all seem to know who he is. They keep their records well because they know exactly what needs to be done during the visit and what was done last time. It is never crowded here, there is at most another customer waiting during your appointment time. They do a great job scheduling. We took our dog to Ankeny Animal & Avian for about a year before switching to another vet.  It's an interesting facility as the vet office is built inside an old Hardee's - they've even kept the old red tile floor!  The staff is very friendly and helpful; they offered me a tour of the place when I first brought my dog in, which I thought was great - they offer boarding services and we did leave Jane here a few times, so getting to see where she would actually stay was nice.  I work in veterinary publishing, so I was constantly trying to sneak a peek during the tour to see if they had current reference texts and journals anywhere... I like to see a vet that keeps up on the latest research and literature... no luck here, the only bookshelves I saw were filled with binders and paperwork.  I realize books and journals in plain sight might not be on everyone's list of priorities, but I think it's a good indicator of a solid, professional environment. This is a pretty tech-savvy vet's office - they send you e-mail reminders about appointments, and your pet's medical records are online so you can log in and see when her last visit was, etc. They also do their own lab work onsite, which is pretty unusual - most vets send it out to a diagnostic lab - and it means you get results back much more quickly.The reason we ended up switching vets was simple: Ankeny Animal & Avian is expensive. It seemed like we were being encouraged to schedule more frequent and more expensive visits all the time, and to fill pricy prescriptions for our healthy one year-old dog.  Eventually, we started to feel like we were being "taken" a little bit - for example, is an intestinal parasite screen really necessary if my dog is vomiting?  Sometimes dogs just vomit.  In fact, the intestinal parasite screen in question didn't show anything - turns out Jane was just eating too much grass, and she was fine within a day or two.  I tend to think a good vet should ask questions and rule out simple things like eating grass before recommending you drop $50 on a lab test or prescribing a special (expensive) food "just in case."If your pet is the love of your life and you don't mind dropping some extra cash on vet bills, Ankeny Animal & Avian is a nice facility with good staff.  It just wasn't quite right for us. Dr. Jacobson changed their diets right away and both now look amazing!The staff here are extremely friendly, professional, and competent. This is a great place to take your dog (or cat or bird). They have 3 doctors so if my dog's sick they can usually fit me right in. They offer boarding which is nice. And their staff is wonderful. They are very attentive and really care about you and your animal. Read Less
