I had just adopted a kitten pretty much (she was 6 months old at the time I adopted her if I recall her age correctly.) Anyways she needed her annual check up with the vet. Let me say I was fooled by the positive google reviews before I continue my story. I walked in there and I must say it was clean and one of the veterinarians there was nice (that's a plus) but the girl running the front desk seemed to be having somewhat of a bad day that day. Anyways my cat got called back to begin her check up. She had an ear problem which was then identified as my cat having ear mites previously but the eggs were dead and were clearing up, fine I believe that you're the vet here. Turns out the ear problem my cat really has is a polyp I don't understand how she identified a polyp as dead ear mite eggs but I found this out at the other vet I go to and much prefer, the cat clinic of Iowa city. Continuing on I had Persephone tested for leukemia she took her to the back, back room and I suppose drew her blood as my mother and I were stuck in the examination room. That was finished and I was told my girl did a great job, to no surprise. I unfortunately don't remember the visit fully but I do remember this. I also asked for a nail trim service which I was charged for and never got. I went to pay the bill for this visit which was pricey but understandable. As I got in the car I realized they never told me the results of the leukemia test I ordered so I ran back in and had to ask for the results even though they told me they would tell me before I left. I was happy to know it came back negative but not happy with how unorganized and forgetful they were that day. A few weeks later I noticed my cats supposed dead ear mite eggs problem did not go away as it should've since her ear was still irritating her and (I know TMI) brown ucky stuff kept coming out. So I gave the clinic a call nobody answered and I left a message and nobody bothered to respond to my concern. I took the matter in my own hands and switched to the cat clinic of Iowa city which is a much nicer and calmer environment. Although it is farther from where I live it's worth it. My girl loves going there. She's one now and healthy besides the polyp problem, thanks to doctor Hayes. He examines your companion in front of you and explains everything and listens to your concerns and questions and answers them. He's keeping a watch on her polyp for when it's ready to remove and recommended a product to ease the irritation in the ear. The staff there is super nice and caring and very well organized. I've been there three times so far for an update on her polyp and for the annual shots kitties get. Never would I recommend going to tender care animal to anyone nor will I be coming back myself regardless that it's centered around both cats and dogs. I don't trust this place and don't see it fit for my pet. I basically wasted a great deal of money at tender care because of a misidentified ear problem. Read Less

I've been bringing my pooch here for almost two years now and I love it. Every time I consider trying a different clinic that's closer to our home, I'm wowed by Dr. Hines' gentle demeanor and professional approach to our appointments. Dr. Hines has been terrific about getting down to my dog's level and doing her best to make him comfortable. Plus Dr. Hines not only answers my questions, but she goes above and beyond to educate me along the way. That's a big one for me - I appreciate when a clinic takes the time to slow down and explain everything to me rather than handing me my dog's lab work and moving onto their next appointment. This clinic isn't shiny and new, but Dr. Hines is wonderful at what she does and my dog couldn't care less about how aesthetically pleasing the place is. Read Less

I went to Tender Care Animal Hospital as a first time cat owner. I was a little lost as to what was healthiest for my kitten and how I could give him the most comfortable life. The vet (Beth Hinson) at Tender Care Animal Hospital suggested a procedure that was anything but tender--she suggested I get my kitten declawed. After much research, I stumbled across the organization Paw Project that spoke about the ill effects of declawing (which is the amputation of the first digits of a a cats paws--the equivalent of cutting off our first joint in our hands). The procedure is equivalent to animal cruelty. I was shocked and heartbroken to discover that the vets in Tender Care Animal Hospital are more than willing to mutilate the feet of cats. Even worse, they DON'T explain what the procedure actually is--they pass it off as something normal cat owners should do to their pets. Thankfully, I informed myself before subjecting my cat to the terrible amputation. In the two years that I have had my cat he has NEVER clawed any of my furniture. I will not be returning to Tender Care Animal Hospital and will continue to look for a vet that does not declaw. It is a matter of principle to me. I've been really pleased with the staff and doctors here; never had a problem with the several procedures my two dogs have had, including some under anesthesia (spays and dentals). They do free followup appointments for post-surgery care, which I really appreciate. The waiting room and consultation rooms are immaculate; I haven't boarded my dogs here, but what I've seen of the recovery area is also very clean and professional-looking. The vet techs are always professional and friendly; never had a bad experience with them. I liked Dr. Graf, but I really, really like Dr. Hinson (the current vet) -- she clearly cares a lot about the animals she treats. The only reasons I don't give Tender Care full marks is that (a) I've never compared their prices with other vets, but I always feel like they are a little more expensive than I'd like, and (b) they do seem to have a higher turnover of veterinarians than I'd expect (3 in the three years I've been going there).
