They were able to see my Bird the same day he had his issues. They knew what they were doing and got him sorted out. The Vet and Tech were friendly, knowledgeable, and able to answer all my questions. The price was very fair (less than $100) considering that I called in and got same day service for a pet that most vets would not see. We live about 90 miles away from Iowa City. We thought possibly our dog had eaten a plastic scrubbing pad as it was missing from our kitchen. Our Boxer, Twig, had been ill for 4 days and we had sought vet care at another facility for the past 3 days. We were referred to Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails for them to possibly scope our dog to see if he had truly eaten the scrubbing pad. Dr. Deb Conant took one look at our dog and the x-rays taken at the previous vet. She recommended surgery right away. Twig was being prepped for surgery 15 minutes after we walked through the door as he was acutely ill. The tech explained to us all of the charges upfront. She called us as soon as the surgery was over to give us a very thorough explanation. We were able to call at anytime day or night to check on our dog. We are so grateful to everyone at Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails. They took great care of Twig and always kept us updated. We can't say enough good things about the care Twig received. My fur-baby (cat) got into a fight with a different fur-baby (dog) on NYE. I called to let them know we were on the way and the helped us immediately. The nurses were amazing, you can tell that they have a genuine love for animals. The vet we had on NYE was good at her job but not very people oriented but the vet we had for a follow up on blood work was phenomenal. While I would never wish for anyone to have to use this place for an emergency type facility, if you do, rest assured they do everything they can and make sure to explain everything to you and why they want to/would recommend specific tests. I took my precious cat to BE&BT for a serious medical condition. She had to stay for several days and undergo several procedures but the very capable vets were able to alleviate the problem as well as diagnose what caused it. Due to several dietary and supplemental changes which have made an incredible difference, she will not encounter the same serious condition again. The vets as well as all the other staff are truly dedicated and always updated me thoroughly whenever I called to check on her. All I can say is thank heavens for this place! They saved my kitty's life two years ago. I have a regular veterinarian (and a second cat), but Sunshine's blocked urethra presented itself on a Sunday morning. My vet's office was closed. I called to tell Bright Eyes what was happening, and they told me to bring Sunshine right away. Turns out that if I had waited even a day for him to be treated, he would have died. He received excellent care. They kept him overnight, to flush his organs and make sure there was no infection (antibiotics). They treated me like the worried pet owner that I was when I went to visit, ahe whole staff was wonderful. My husband and I are taking care of a 3 week old kitten for my mom, and we were really concerned about her not eating and being half the size of her littermates. We called Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails thinking we would have to make an emergency visit, but the front desk staff was very friendly and they were able to fit us in an hour and a half later as a regular appointment. The vet techs and the vet were very nice and seemed to actually care about helping us save the poor girl. The vet even showed me how to tube feed her if necessary, but she has been doing a lot better since our visit, so I don't think that will be needed. They gave us antibiotics, deworming medication, and also gave her a shot of vitamin b-12 in hopes to improve her appetite which so far it has. I would definitely take any future pets there, and have even convinced my mom to switch vet clinics from the one she initially took her too. They were more concerned about getting the parent cats fixed than helping the kitten. Great place to take your pet! Read Less

First it is very nice to have an emergency pet clinic. That said, when your beloved pet is in need you are not always as rational as you normally would be. I took my pet in thinking that euthanasia was the best thing to do. Exam, X-rays, Antibiotic, Critical Care diet and fluids was what occurred, as well as discussion of possible surgery... My furry family member died the next day. Yes the doctor and staff are very nice, yes they called the next day.... Was course of treatment financial, practical, rational??? If you go there to put your pet to sleep, they will take advantage of your vulnerability. Nickel and diming every little thing. Also, at the end they said they were giving our dog a sedative for relax her before putting her down, but instead they gave her way too much and she completely fell unconscious, preventing us from saying a heartfelt goodbye. Staff could have been a little more friendlier but Dr. Berger was awesome and made me feel at ease since this is my first time raising a kitten to a cat! He was very patcient as well as understanding with my pre vet jitters. I undertsand it's the only place open 24/7 for emergencies but for heavens sake it was quite exspensive. I would recommend going somewhere on the outskirts of Iowa city like Hills or Solon maybe. They tend to be a lot more affordable although the drive is a bummer. Read Less

We had an emergency that required our puppy to stay two nights here and I have never been treated better than at Bright eyes and bushy tails! I did not deal well with my dog being sick and away from me, but the staff called me with any updates, sent me pictures when I missed her, encouraged me to call for updates or questions and gave us their full support and attention while we were present. They calculated prices before we made any decisions on care and talked us through all of the tests and medication our dog would be receiving, they really made us feel in control of our dogs care. Not only did they do all of this while our dog was in their care, but they followed up with calls to see how she was doing and to see if we had any questions!!! Our little Mini Schnauzer, Bogey, was experiencing changes in behavior. He would not play or do the normal things he was used to doing. We took him to our regular vet and she did all kinds of blood work. She could not find anything wrong with him. We noticed he was not shutting his mouth, he was not panting, but would not have his mouth shut like most dogs. We took him back to our vet and again, nothing. She sent us to a Specialty Vet Clinic in Cedar Rapids. The young vet there did all kinds of tests and again, found nothing wrong. After another few days, we decided to take him to the Emergency Vet Clinic in Iowa City, Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails. We had a vet there that was somewhat of an experienced lady and knew right away that our Bogey had Trigeminal Neuritis. It is a nerve disease that will not allow him to close his mouth. It eventually goes away, but during the process, he needs to be hand fed and his water intake needs to be monitored as when he laps, it comes right back out into his dish. He is getting better every day and we are so grateful to Dr. Deb Conant for her knowledge of this disease. It is very rare and she had only seen 3-4 cases in her career. The other vets we saw were quite young and I am sure had never seen this before, therefore were not able to diagnose it. If you want an excellent group of medical staff to take care of your pet, BEBT is the very best. Only one place possibly could be as good and that would be Iowa State Veterinary Hospital in Ames. I have "frequent flyer" miles there. also, for the care of my cats, but I must admit than Allen Berger DVM always goes that extra 100 miles,or so, in getting to a diagnosis and a treatment plan for the problem. He always listens to our ideas and opinions, respecting the fact that we are the ones living with the pet and know that something is not "right" health wise with our cats. He also respects our feelings of " right to life", when many Vets would just suggest to put them down. My only possible complaint with this hospital is the "office manager" who can tend to be quite curt and abrupt to patients/customers frequently. The real trick is to avoid her totally, if possible. If you do that successfully, than you will have a fantastic and educational experience at BEBT!!!!Read Less

Went to Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails with our Cock-a-poo having multiple issues.  The receptionist greeted me was very Friendly, which sounds trivial, but  it is a lost art for a lot of businesses.The vet tech assistant took the vitals and listened to the issues and she was very nice and friendly.Dr. Berger listened to the issues and then did a thorough exam explaining in detail as he went along. I went to the emergency service when my 13 year old dog started having seizures. I thought I would be putting him to sleep before I went but I wasn't sure. Even though he was 13 and it was after midnight, Dr. Berger did the most thorough exam I've ever seen. He found a tumor that my previous vet missed. I did put my dog to sleep as I had feared, but I did with all my questions answered and my dog and I can be at peace with what happened. Dr. Berger tried to cover for my regular veterinarian and that is the only part I was uncomfortable with. The difference between the care was hugely obvious with previously missed cataracts, heart murmur, and my old vet never did a rectal exam or checked blood pressure. Go to BEBT. We used to go to ""the old BEBT"" in the basement years ago with my son's pet snake, but drifted away with our other pets to a veterinarian who was closer to home. Last month my dog got sick. Really sick. I found myself back at BEBT because they were the only place open. Some of the doctors were the same (the Bergers and Dr. Conant) and many were different The care we received was excellent. It made me question why we'd left in the first place. Even though their larger office may not be as easy as a one-doctor practice where every person staff knows everything about my dog, the level of care was amazing. We needed a sonogrom on a Saturday night and we got it. We needed a transfusion on Sunday morning and it was no problem. And once I started viewing the many doctors as opportunities for built-in second opinions it no longer felt impersonal and inefficient but was really collaborative. I still like the small practice I used to go to, but when the chips are down and you need options fast BEBT is the place to be. It is a month later they still call me to find out how we are doing. Bright Eyes & Bushy Tails has been my vet for for four years. With two cats and a dog, I'm there every few months. Reception is always friendly. I've seen three vets so far. Dr. Jenn Berger, Dr. Conant, and Dr. Miller. All have been very knowledgeable and caring. Prices: Office visits are typical for the area ($30-40). A dental cleaning and extractions on my older cat was expensive, but I knew it up-front and they showed me x-rays of the teeth afterwards. Frontline for my cat was actually a little cheaper that PetMedsOnline, so it averages out. In balance it's a good value. I highly recommend them to friends - very complete and always gentle with my kids. Read Less
