Beating and kicking a tiny dog until his ribs were broken?  That is undisputed admission of the owners son who is not even in jail.  They raised him, they allowed him around animals.  Never.

My husband and I have taken our 2 cats here for the first two years of their lives while we lived in Iowa City and experienced nothing but care and kindness. Dr. VanderGaast is wonderful and I felt completely comfortable with her and bringing in my two fur-babies for all their health needs, including a spay and a neuter. One of our cats even has a bit of anxiety and is often scared and uncomfortable, and we never had a single problem. They would often be given a few treats to help relax or calm them down while in the exam room. Our female cat can be picky, so she was even give a few different kinds of treats to choose from. We have also interacted with a second doctor when VanderGaast was out, as well as a few assistants that would come to help administer shots, etc. Every one of them was lovely, kind, helpful, and treated our pets with care. We were always in the exam room with them (except for surgery, of course), and we never witnessed any harsh handling of our pets or others that were in the clinic at the same time. In mid 2015, we required a move to Europe and had no idea where to start in moving 2 cats to a new country. Lucas was extraordinarily, helpful, knowledgeable, and warm hearted and I appreciated the extra time he took to begin guiding us through this murky and complicated process. He has helped move numerous pets, and even has a map with pins of all the places he has helped move pets to, which I thought was very sweet. I am shocked and so very sorry to hear about the event with the groomed dog in the summer of 2016. Shocked because I could not believe this was a place where that could happen, and sorry because it happened at all. As a pet owner nearly all my life, it makes my heart break for the owner of the dog affected. But I also think it is unfair that so many reviews are all commenting on the same instance nearly 20 times, many of which even admit to never have received service here themselves. I sincerely hope that the team here reevaluate either their grooming procedures, the individuals they employ regardless of relationship, or a combination. Again, I'm am so sad and sorry for this event, but my personal experience has been nothing but positive. I did not observe a clinic culture of animal abuse or neglect and never questioned taking my pets here for their care. Read Less

Groomer at Creature Comfort Veterinary Center in Iowa City Admits to Abusing DogAccording to the police report, the groomer, Lucas Van Orden V, confessed to kicking the Jasper the Corgi while he was grooming him, seriously breaking his ribs and bruising his lungs. Corgis are very small dogs, with famously short legs, so it could be safely assumed that the groomer kicked the dog while he was on the ground, not on the grooming table or in the sink. No details were given as to when in the grooming process the dog was so cruelly abused by the 22-year-old groomer.Although this horrific incident occurred early in July, it was not until Thursday that police arrested Van Orden. Police charged him with a simple misdemeanor, for animal neglect, as well as issue a police citation. The groomer is scheduled to appear in 6th Judicial District Court on August 25, facing $625 in fines and up to 30 days in jail. Read Less

I would not take a pet to this place again.  I question who is really providing the medical care, a licensed veterinarian or someone who thinks he is one.  Several years ago we took one of our cats in for fairly routine urinary tract infection treatment.  They kept him and did some minor surgery.  We got a call saying he did fine and was recovering.  About 2 hours later the female vet called and said "I don't know how to tell you this, but your cat died".  She couldn't explain what happened or what went wrong.  Later I heard horror stories from other clients about issues with the vet which caused me to wonder how they keep a license.  The facility was dirty and disgusting.  Never again would I trust care of a pet to these people Read Less

My dog starting losing hair in one spot on it's back. I noticed after several days that the spot was getting larger. I called this vet and was given an appt several days later. When I went to the vet I was told it could be a number of things (my husband is a doc and said it was something fungal). The vet on call told me that several tests were needed to determine exactly what it is. After blood work, tape skin sample and looking over the problematic area for a while, they determined they still didn't know what it was. Then came time to pay. They charged me over $370 for these tests without my knowledge of the cost. After expressing my dismay at how much I was charged, the clerk told me, "I don't decide how much they charge, I just take the money". Unfortunately I had to come back to go over the blood work, which was normal and they, of course, charged me $50 for the visit. I decided after that that I would be going to a different vet! I can't say enough good things about Creature Comforts. We first took our fur-baby to them after he had gotten into the trash and eaten some corncobs... After a couple of days of monitoring him I decided that he just wasn't acting right & needed to see a vet. I called and they got us right in even though it was already after 4pm that day. After an exam and x-rays the vet advised surgery on him to remove the nastiness that was lodged in his tummy and immediately got him prepped for it. He made it through the procedure. The level of care he received while there was amazing. Everyone there seemed to fall in love with him and I was in no way worried about having to leave him there for a couple of days. They were incredibly supportive during my time of emotional distress and encouraged me to visit, which I did every day he was there. Since then I have taken him to one other place in the area for some routine stuff and was incredibly disappointed with the customer service and level of care we received. We will not be going back, and I will happily drive by a handful of vet clinics as I would rather drive the 30 minutes to Creature Comfort. And for the record my father is a veterinarian (lives several states away unfortunately) and I hold my vets to pretty high standards after having literally grown up in a vet clinic. I started going here after learning that my dog had a mass in her abdomen one day and being told by Tender Care that they wanted to "open her up tomorrow" and euthanize her if it was something they couldn't resect.  I started crying and the vet didn't even pretend to understand why what he said might have been upsetting.I went to Creature Comfort the next day for a second opinion and Dr. VanderGaast was great.  She was understanding and very kind to my dog.  She repeated the abdominal series on my dog and gave me the option of taking her to the Veterinary Specialty Center in CR for an ultrasound to locate the tumor.  I had to euthanize my dog a week later because her entire spleen was tumor and the cancer had metastasized,  but in that intervening week Dr. VanderGaast was wonderful.  She even gave me her home number in order to contact her after-hours in case my dog went downhill quickly.  She was incredibly kind (both to me and my beloved dog) when I abruptly had to bring in my dog and euthanize her.Since then I've adopted another dog and I bring him to Dr. VanderGaast for all of his care.  She's always reassuring, incredibly competent, and just an all-around great vet.  I trust her judgement.  She and one of the staff even made a housecall the day I shattered my wrist this past winter and came to pick up both my dog and my sister's dog whom I was "babysitting" because I couldn't care for them as I needed to have my wrist surgically put back together the next day.  I'd recommend Creature Comfort to anyone without any reservations (and certainly have by word-of-mouth).
