Friendly staff, they take their time and don't try to rush you out the door. They also check in with you a couple days later to see how your pet is doing which is a nice touch and shows that they care about your pet's well-being. Pretty easy to get a same day appointment to avoid having to go to an emergency room clinic if you need immediate non-critical care. Read Less

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Mears and his staff. We had to be at KU Cancer Center one morning and woke up to a vomiting puppy with a swollen face. Our vet was not in and we just walked in off the street at 7:45 am to Millcreek and everyone from the front desk to Dr. Mears was responsive, caring and reassuring. I have been taking my pets to Dr. Marty (Gilmore) for about 5yrs. He is so good with my cats. While they don’t like to travel in the car, they are always relaxed when Dr. Marty sees them. He explains everything and makes sure any questions I have get answered. He only administers the needed medicine and never tries to push anything. I would (and do) recommend Mill Creek to anyone. We've been taking our pets to the see the vets at Mill Creek Animal Hospital for three years. Through check-ups, worried owner visits, ear infections, allergies, a tooth extraction, a tumor removal and grooming, I have always had great experiences. They take the time needed to discuss your pet's issue, be sure you understand what the problem is and answer your questions before presenting treatment options.I've taken many pets to many vets over the course of my life and I can tell you that you would be hard pressed to find stand-out doctors as great as those at Mill Creek Animal Hospital. The owner of this hospital is rude, careless and inconsiderate. His team mislabeled my five month old puppy's X-Rays - She was in surgery for a broken RIGHT hip when her LEFT hip was the broken one all along. A careless mistake that could have been much more serious. Scott, the owner of Mill Creek, refused to apologize to me when I called him to discuss their mistake and the implications it had on my dog physically and my family financially. The only thing he could say to me is "all is well that ends well" because my dog will likely be okay and he's seen the wrong dogs get euthanized in his career. While the team at Mill Creek made an honest mistake, the owner of the hospital should take responsibility and try to right his team's wrong. Scott talked down to me, pointed blame at my hometown vet (who caught Mill Creek's mistake) and refused to make any effort to right his wrong. If you ever have to go here (our dog was run over by a car during a weekend trip to Moab and it was an emergency), I absolutely recommend getting a second opinion elsewhere. Dr. Church is an outstanding veterinarian with aggressive attention to detail. We had been to two other vets in the northern Johnson County area over the past 10 years and none of them have shown nearly the quality of Dr. Church. He is extremely thorough and always follows up. My small cat had to have a very delicate surgery done on her jaw. Prior to the procedure the doctor took the time to explain it all to me carefully and put me at ease. I had no doubt they would take the best possible care of her. I have had good experiences with any pet I have taken to Mill Creek Animal Hospital. This vet is the best around us. We are forced to go here because "the devil you know", in a way, and also because it can SOMETIMES be EXCELLENT. Dr. Mears is the best vet I have ever had. He's compassionate, doesn't criticize or talk down to owners and is great with our dogs. When we had to put down one of our beloved babies, it was done in the best way possible, with a separate room where we could grieve. Very well done for such a hard time. However, the receptionists suck. The groomers now suck - I'm scared to take my baby back because she had DARK SCARY "choke" bruises the day after grooming! Have seen these before & they're from HANGING off the table (like a noose) from the cord around their neck. I'm scared to go now! That never happened anywhere else. Also we've picked up a single flea TWICE from the waiting area. When examined, we're told we "have fleas" in our home (we didn't both times). Last time we saw a different vet (from same practice, just other than Mears) and she spoke down to me as if my house was infested, acting like I was stupid and didn't realize my dog had fleas. I check my dog every day. She did not. I checked again, everywhere, when we got back. Checked her, all the hot spots, the other dog, the other pet, the bedding, everything. We didn't have them. We DID, however, get a very hefty fee for the latest "flea removal" drug that COINCIDENTALLY was plastered all over the office! Hmmm. Interesting. She was shocked I didn't give my inside almost all the time small dog a flea prevention pill, and later when I got home I was called by the receptionist, and damn near TOLD to buy heartworm medication. I was coming back to pick my dog up for goodness sake. I was also going to pick it up on my next visit, when I ran out, which was like next week. I felt harassed! I felt as if she felt I wasn't buying one "much needed" pill, so I "obviously" wasn't treating my dog properly. Very pissed off. And this is THE BEST VET within this area. WTF am I supposed to do? I feel angry and scared to take my dogs in, but the other places are much worse. Plus this vet has the WONDERFUL Dr. Mears! Ugh. Like I said, "the devil you know". Read Less

I have a special exotic breed of cat that is known to not do good with some shots, not recommended, can cause death, etc. (not rabies/common ailments, just newer ones). I had researched breeders, etc., and tried to discuss pros and cons with vet, and my desire to NOT have some given. They gave them to her anyway! (Said they were combined, but not so I find!) I also HATE that they also will take your pet away to the back room for everything beyond initial exam, instead of with you in exam room like my retired vet did, to help keep your pet feel calmer/protected. They also even told me that they used my cat in back to show young student helpers to train!!! My cat is NOT your guinea pig!!!!!!!!!! You judge?: I adopted an abused cat from shelter. She kept shaking her head, scratching ear to bleed like other shelter cats with ear mites I have had. She was scared to death over being caged again to go there. I TOLD them this. We had just got her to trust us. He could have looked in her ear in exam room, prescribed her drops like other vet. BUT, ended up telling us it was rare to see ear mites anymore, so wanted his students to see exam in back! I think so many people are impressed by the JoCo 'look' of the place and people they have in front, a place that 'had' a good initial vet, so have accepted all the rest vets added for $$$. Stinks of profit over caring to me! Then, also regarding on the 'profit' part of this, they 'constantly' send emails for endless products to buy, etc. It is shameful and obvious to me they are in this for the money, NOT for love of your pets/furry children. Can you imagine if you brought your child to a doctor that totally ignored you this way, and then 'spammed' your email, that won't even stop with your 'decline'??!! Read Less

As somebody who has taken their dogs to 6 different vets before finding the right one, I can firmly say that Mill Creek Animal Hospital is THE BEST. We personally see Dr. Rebecca Schumacher and she is the most stellar vet we've ever been to. She makes sure to listen to all of your concerns (no matter how big or small) and explains everything thoroughly, so that you understand all of your options. After seeing 5 other vets for help, she even cured our dog's incurable allergies! She doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions, isn't condescending, and is never rushing out of the room. Do you love your furrbabies?  Are you fond of vets who care about you AND your little guys/gals?  If so, stop looking, because you've found your animal hospital.  We've been to lots of vets over the years, some good, some not so much.  Then we found Dr. Church.  He's not only the best vet we've ever been to, but he honestly might be one of the kindest men you'll ever meet.  Oh, and he's really, really good at what he does.  Seriously, you AND your dogs/cats will love him, and he'll do whatever he can for you.  Buffy and Maximus, who are quite picky when it comes to people, liked Doc from the start.  What more can you ask for?  And have I mentioned how awesome the staff is?  We haven't had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gilmore or Dr. Mears, yet, but others have written glowing reviews about them that you can read above/below.  However, Dr. Schumacher took care of our pups, as well, and she's tremendous.  I honestly can't think of one bad thing about Mill Creek Animal Hospital.  Heck, they even have treats for your kiddos AND you (tootsie rolls last time I was in). I just took my dog here for the first time. I was looking for a new vet for him since moving back to Kansas city. They are so great! From the welcoming voice you get when making your first call, to the professional and friendly staff who makes you and your pet comfortable, I had a truly great experience. They were very detailed in the whole visit, they gave me my cost estimate before I even came to my appointment. We started going to Milk Creek when we adopted our fur baby Maggie in 2001 and have been with them every since. They are so caring to not only my fur babies but to our family. I had to put Maggie down about a year ago and the vet stayed right by our side the whole time. When she first became obviously sick he tried some meds and I thought things were looking up but sadly we had to let her go. She is not suffering anymore. This journey with her being sick started aprox 2 months b4 we had to let her go and the vet called religiously every Wed to check in her. I am so grateful to him and all the staff. My kids absolutely love this place. We've been clients for almost two years and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. The staff is patient, loving and always treats our furbabies like their own. Dr. Mears is straight forward and has an amazing bedside manner. He took such good care if Winston when he had knee surgery, and has been extremely patient with our newest addition, Violet. Dr. Church was wonderful when Violet had some sort of allergic reaction recently and kept me in the loop when I had to leave her in the office for the day. I also love the fact that several options for treatment are provided, many places these days just see dollar signs, but Mill Creek truly wants what is best for your family. My mom started taking our pets to this animal clinic many years ago, and so when I moved back to KC about 10 years ago it seemed like the natural place to go. We started seeing Dr. Gilmore at that time for both our cat and our dog. We've always received excellent care from Dr. Gilmore who explains everything really well and also is very kind to my kids when they ask questions about animals or want to see what an x-ray looks like. Sadly, both pets have passed and he was very honest with me on their quality of life and was willing to have has many conversations with me as needed (on the phone) to help me make my decision on their care. We recently got a new dog and so we've gone back, even though we live out in Overland Park and there are other animal hospitals that are much closer. I recommend Mill Creek to all my friends. We just moved from Saint Louis, and needed a new vet for our miniature dachshund Ollie.  Dr. Gilmore was very good with my nervous little pup and made us both feel comfortable.  He was very informative and answered all of my questions.  Ollie had to have an old baby tooth removed (he's almost 3) and the staff was great with him.  He was really groggy when I picked him up and all evening, which was expected.  Today he is acting like himself again, happy and goofy.  Thank you for taking excellent care of our little guy! I started seeing Dr. Mears a couple years ago and drove almost 100 blocks each time my dogs needed to be seen. Both of my dogs are rescues and one has aggression issues with strangers. Dr. Mears knows exactly how to act to keep my dog from feeling threatened. I couldn't imagine who else I could ever take my animals too. He has a big heart for them and is an excellent vet!!! When we adopted our lab mix puppy, we took her to Dr. Gilmore on the recommendation of a neighbor. We couldn't be more pleased with the care she has received from Dr. Gilmore and his staff. Dr. Gilmore has a gentle way with my dog that keeps her fairly calm during exams. He is also very good at explaining what's going on health-wise with our dog. We receive emails and postcards regarding when she is due for appointments as well as announcements/coupons for products like Advantix and heart worm prevention meds. I'm amazed to be the first person to review this wonderful establishment, but nevertheless, pleased to do so. It's one way I can give back to a practice that has given so much to me and my animals over the years. In fact, I was initially referred to Mill Creek by a girlfriend of mine; she and I no longer speak and she doesn't go to Mill Creek anymore, but I feel like I got the better end of the deal anyway.I initially brought in my dog after a terrible experience at a local Banfield, where the veterinarian tried to pressure me to buy pet insurance and consent to a procedure I didn't believe my dog needed. I made an appointment to get a second opinion from Marty Gilmore, one of the veterinarians on staff at Mill Creek.Not only did Dr. Gilmore allay my fears about my dog needing surgery, he spent several minutes just talking to me, person to person. While many veterinarians seem to have lost the ability to converse with their clients' masters, Dr. Gilmore was incredibly warm and personable. He didn't rush, and answered every question I had thoroughly and honestly.Additionally, I never got the impression from Dr. Gilmore that he was counting the seconds to rush to his next patient. He made me feel like my time was valuable, and best of all, he was honest. He didn't knock my choice of flea preventative or make me buy Science Diet. He even went so far as to tell me that 1.800.PetMeds is completely trustworthy when I expressed some hesitation about affording my dog's medication. I had the same experience with the other vets as well.Although what's important is how a vet treats your furry friend, it's nice to feel counted and appreciated, too. I moved away from Kansas City several years ago, and when I recently accompanied a friend of mine to go see Dr. Gilmore with his own dog, I came along just to say hi. He immediately remembered me and my dog, and asked us all kinds of questions as to how we were doing, if we'd found a good vet, etc. Before I left, he even asked if there was anything I needed for my dog since I had him with me.In a nutshell, all three of the vets--Dr. Mears, Dr. Church and Dr. Gilmore especially--have an amazing ability to develop rapports with their canine clients and their owners. You are never treated like just a number, and if they are suggesting a product to you, you can trust it is because you really need it rather than because they want to make their distributors happy.My experience with Mill Creek and Dr. GIlmore in particularly has been so impressive, three members of my social circle have switched over to seeing him for their own canine companions. I've been taking my many animals to this clinic for years. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. The staff is very friendly and helpful from taking care of the pets to taking care of their "parents". The veternarians are so kind, thorough and knowledgable. I've had to have many of my pets put down, and they are tremendous. They showed empathy and sadness along with us, and my pets have all had a peaceful "sleep".
