My wife and I have 3 dogs. They have been patients of Dr. Van Zandt for years. Unfortunately the eldest came to the end of her road and had to be put to sleep. I can not say enough about Dr. VanZandt and his team in terms of their commitment to the client's pets, professionalism and compassion. Even though I usually only need to take my dog once a year, they know his name when I call. We can walk our dog without a leash but he loves this vet so much that I have to put him on a leash because he gets so excited to see him that he ignores all of his off leash commands. No offense Doc but I think he just loves the treats! None the less, the Doctor is terrific and I 100% always recommend him. I have friends I got the recommendation from because they were unable to have children but their dogs are like children to them and they love them very much. I can't say enough good things about this place. Dr Van Zandt neutered our 7 year old boxer and did a fantastic job. We were referred by someone that spoke so highly of him and I can see why! Dr. Van Zandt is awesome. They always remember our lab Chief when we call and come in. We live in Lees Summit and drive to Shawnee just to see them because they are so nice there. Chief had a cancerous mast cell tumor in the spring and Dr. Van Zandt was there for us. He recommended we go to Mizzou Vet hospital and gave us a coupon for the surgery because it was a pretty expensive surgery. He was great with follow ups and he got us in quickly when another lump popped up. He is an awesome vet, if you are anywhere in the metro, definitely go to him. Read Less

Dr. Van Zandt is great. He spends time answering our questions and being realistic and truthful. We will never go to another vet as long as we live in the KC metro area. I've been a pet owner for the last 15 years and I have been to MANY vets over those years for my pets.  And bar none, Sunflower is the best I've ever been to.  It is clear from the very first interaction you have with them that they are compassionate and care about providing service to you and your pets more than they care about making a buck.  Every time I call with a question about one of my pets, Suzanne is kind and understanding and never seems annoyed with all the questions I seem to have.  Dr. Van Zandt is always thorough but concise, so there is no wasted hour sitting in an exam room listening to a vet ramble on or try to sell you on uneccessary services.  In fact, I have at one point asked for a particular service/medication for all my pets which would have ended up in a very costly vet bill.  They were kind enough to actually let me know that it wasn't necessary and would just end up costing me a lot for no real reason.  They could have just taken my money but they were more concerned with saving ME money in the long run.  That is the mark of a great business in my book.They have been awesome with all of my pets.  When our cat passed away, they were so kind and compassionate.  When we brought in our "trouble dog", they didn't chastise us for a badly behaved dog, they didn't even refer to him as a trouble dog, and they handled it amazingly (even though our dog definitely did not!).   They have incredibly fair prices and a kind staff.  I can't recommend them enough! Dr. Van Zandt actually saved my pet's life! My 10 yr old golden retriever boy was in really bad health last year, on 3 different meds and I was afraid that he might have to be put down. My personal vet whom we had originally and loved, was now no longer available, but he personally recommended Dr Van Zandt to us. My dog was put on a strict diet, ZERO meds, since then has lost 18 lbs and is now fit as a fiddle at 11 yrs old! We have been taking our new puppy to Sunflower Animal Hospital since May 2011 and have been very happy with the care and advice we have received. Everyone from the receptionist, to Dr Van Zant, to the groomer seem genuinely interested in our now 1 year old puppy's care. This is the second vet I've used in 18 years. I started going to Dr. VanZandt when my previous vet, whom I loved, retired. There was a night and day difference between him and the new owner, so a neighbor referred me to Sunflower Animal Hospital. When I moved, I was in search of a new vet.  A couple of my friends recommended this place and all I can say is wow, I'm happy that they did.Dr. Van Zandt and his staff are probably some of the most friendly people you'll ever meet, they make you feel almost like family when you come in.  They're always upbeat, smiling, and generally sincere on how happy they are that you are there to bring your pet in for a visit.  The service is always great and their prices are very reasonable.  I brought in one of my dogs when I thought it was his time for shots, turned out it wasn't.  They still weighed him and checked a few other things out, along with trimming his nails and didn't charge me a dime.  Now that is what you call great service!  Definitely where I will continue bringing my dogs to in the future.  Highly recommended. Very friendly and helpful.  My in-laws brought their dogs here so when we got a new puppy, there wasn't a lot of thought on where to take her.Overall, I like the place.  The two main things that make it not a 5 rating:1.  It's difficult to get to.  You can only turn into the parking lot if you are traveling east.  Since I come from the west, I have to find someplace to do a "U"ey.2.  I cannot take my ferret to get her vaccinations there.  So I have to go to a separate place for my other pet.Note: they are closed each day from noon to 1:30. Dr. VanZant is a caring and very competent veterinarian. He has helped us compassionately with the passing of our 14 year old Basset Hound and now has given really good care to our new 2 Basset Hounds. He has a wonderful receptionist that always remembers us, knows us and is very helpful with our needs.
