Scott County Veterinary Clinic

Georgetown, Kentucky
General Info
In January of 2012, Scott County Veterinary Clinic opened its doors once again under the new ownership of Dr. Karen Hancock Young. The clinic had been in operation for over 30 years until late 2010, in the capable and caring hands of the late Dr. Luther James. Dr. Young is a native of Lexington, KY, and is a graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar, the University of Kentucky, and the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. She worked in a busy mixed animal practice in Northwest Georgia for two and a half years and now has returned closer to home to serve the community of Georgetown. She will continue to provide the same compassionate care to all of your animals, great and small. We look forward to seeing returning clients and patients of Dr. James, as well as lots of new faces as well! Stay tuned for our website currently under construction and we hope to see you soon and Scott County Veterinary Clinic!
We now have a brand new clinic, right across the street from the old one, and our new boarding facilities are up and running. We are happy to provide care for your furry family members anytime, and even while you are away. You are welcome to bring their own beds, toys and food, or we can provide them. Come by and check out our new facilities!

BEWARE!!!! KENNEL COUGH!!!!! CONTAGIOUS!!!! DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOGS HERE. I had my dogs boarded here while I was away on vacation and I had specific instructions for them to receive their annual shots while I was gone (even though none of their shots were expired.) In addition to their annual shots, the vet clinic told me that they needed Bordetella every 6 months to be allowed to be boarded there to be extra safe. My dogs Bordetalla was still valid, and accepting their "Every 6 months" policy I agreed that it could be administered as well. I come home from vacation to find out my dogs did not receive the Bordetella or any of their shots I requested. Long story short, the technician in the back with the kenneled dogs makes the decisions for all animals without calling the owners, and saw that the shots weren't expired so my dogs did not receive anything, not even the Bordetella. SHE IGNORED THE PAPERWORK that the front desk filled out while I was at the counter. NO ONE CALLED ME to verify anything, they just didn't do it. I made a post on here, received a response, and a phone call from the doctor who seemed sincere and apologetic, changed my review, and now changing it again because..... Well, now my dog has KENNEL COUGH (and I have tons of videos of it!) I thought it was fair to give this vet office a chance to remedy the situation THAT THEY CREATED.... Dr. Young REFUSED to believe my dog had kennel cough and said it was a sore throat even though she and the tech were unable to see down my dogs throat (dog was unwilling.) I asked the doctor what the difference was between the two and she said, "I don't know." Are you kidding me????? They wanted to treat her for a sore throat but I asked how they knew she had a sore throat since they couldn't even see it. I said I was taking my dog to another doctor for a second opinion for kennel cough and then ALL THE SUDDEN the doctor said well it might be kennel cough, and that she didn't say it wasn't. Ahhh, there it is..... It MIGHT BE KENNEL COUGH. She was very threatened that I was going to take my dog elsewhere and told me the test to check for kennel cough was very expensive as the excuse not to do the test and my dog still have kennel cough... I told her I really don't care how expensive it is! How does she even know what I can afford? I then told them again, I was going somewhere else and I left. This place is an absolute JOKE and the doctor is uneducated and unprofessional. She can't even pull her pants up! Do not board your dog here unless you want them to be OVERLOOKED and to contact Bordetella. Kind of funny, I got a postcard in the mail from them postmarked for JUNE 12th that their Rabies shots were due and that I should schedule an appointment... GUESS WHAT, they were THERE and SUPPOSED to be receiving it!!!! This place looks nice on the outside and that's why I gave them a chance but I deeply regret it. My dog has never had kennel cough before but I called my previous vet office to tell them my dog might have kennel cough and because its SO CONTAGIOUS they won't even let me bring her into the building. They want her examined outside. Wow, this sure does sound SERIOUS.... I bet Scott Co. Vet clinic is super contaminated, and guess what... they don't really care. They'll just tell you that your pet doesn't have a cough, even though they are COUGHING in front of them.... I am so disappointed. Read Less

We took our dog to be seen for several days of not eating, weakness, and lethargy. The Vet that came in was terrible. Her assessment took around 45 seconds, and she barely touched him. After blood work and fecal revealed nothing acute, so decided that he needed "more" blood work to test his Thyroid and told us how much the medicine is and how often we would come back to recheck (she wanted to start him on the medication right away with the more in depth test also). She also gave hime antibiotics, nausea medication, and powder to sprinkle on food. We both felt right away this was not right! Next morning our dog could barely walk. We took him to another vet in Lexington who took exceptional care of him. The vet did a PROPER assessment and found he is having back pain. He got a steroid shot in the office with pills to take home, including nerve pain medication. After one day of treatment and our boy is eating and moving better. We were also advised to stop all medication the first vet gave us. So we were out $290.00 for the visit to Scott County Vet. We called and asked for at least a partial refund since there diagnosis and treatment plan was so far off, but I will let you guess how that went. We asked for a return call from the primary vetinarian to file a complaint for such terrible care and assessment, but never received a call. They got there $290.00 out of us, and that is all that matters to them! Leaving this review wherever I can! Maybe if they had returned my phone calls and talked to me this wouldn't have happened. I think the service for the animals is ok but I think their office practice is unethical. I was in the process of bording my dog for the week. The woman behind the desk told me my dog was due a couple of updated things. The cost would be $60. She said" Well do you want these service done. I told her I would wait until some other time. She said " well you can't bore him then" My question is why didn't you tell me when we called. I had no opportunity to find another place. I told her that she had me over the barrel. Why did she even ask me if I wanted it done if I had to do it any way. When it came to pick up my dog they did other things so the bill was higher (approx. $80 additional) than what we agreed to. They never called to tell us they did something else. To me this is unethical and Scott County Veterinary Clinic needs to be called out on it. I don't appreciate their style of business. I can't wait to see what happens when my wife goes in to tell them to give her a refund. This will not be a pleasant conversation. Poor business practices. Everyone reading find another place that will treat you ethically. I know I am going to look for a new place. I will let someone else pay for their new building. Im not doing this anymore, I would not recommend them .Read Less

I took my oldest cat (only 10)there in early August of 2014 because she had developed a pea size mass on her neck. Dr Young aspirated it& proceeded to tell me it was a benign cyst. My gut told me there was something else going on, but I trusted her. 2weeks later, it was the size of a dime. I went to the afford a vet for a second opinion. They also aspirated it but first they gave my cat benadryl to help hold the cells of the mass together for a better sample. Dr Young did NOT do this. Cancer cells were found &they sent off a sample for more tests. It was a malignant melonoma. I went to Clay's Mill Vet clinic for surgery. By the time she went into surgery, it was the size of a quarter. Unfortunately they weren't able to remove all of it because it was growing into her spine. The surgeon told me if it'd been smaller he could've removed it entirely. As it turned it, my lovely Miss Honor died in May of 2015. Had one SIMPLE test been done properly by Dr Young, she might still be alive.

Maybe if they had returned my phone calls and talked to me this wouldn't have happened. i can relate to a lot of other people on all points! the staff is extremely kind and always welcoming! but!! if your dog gets hit by a car and you bring it in after hours (30 min) after to be exact, they will not even look at it unless you have $100 up front! my poor daughter was in tears and didn't know where to go! she wasn't sure if she was bleeding internally or had some kind of head injury! a friend of mine told her to take her to all 4 paws that are open till 7:30 ex rays, office visit and medication all came to $130! granted Dr. Young has taken care of my moms dog now for 2 years with wonderful and loving care. but i don't see how she could turn down an injured animal if you're any kind of compassionate vet! my daughter didn't have a penny to her name. so her mamaw helped her at the other vets. my personal opinion is that she is still trying to fund her new building etc. at the sake of a life or so of animals! sorry but i lost some respect for her today!!Read Less

My son's 12 year old pet beagle had to be put to sleep recently. We chose Scott County Veterinarian Clinic on the recommendation of a family friend. I want to thank them so much for their kind words, caring attitudes, quiet private room and the wonderful card we got in the mail while waiting for her remains. Her remains were placed in a nice cherry box along with the last paw print we will ever have. Thank you again for your wonderful service during such a painful time. Well over a year ago, during a one of the big snow storms, Sully our cat got deathly sick. We took him to Scott County and the vet braved the roads to meet us at the office. Our cat's kidneys were failing. We almost lost Sully a couple of times over that next few months. It is a miracle he is still with us.

Read Less
