Superior service for our fur babies. The vet detected my cat has hyperthyroidism and vestibular neurological disorder and we have been treating it and she is getting better. You are going to have a long wait if its not an emergency however they can make that easy for you by calling you to come back so that you don't have to sit in their waiting room for hours. And lastly they are reasonably priced. Be mindful, they only accept cash and checks which may drive down prices across the board but we get excellent vet services in return. Read Less

You're probably going to wait longer than you'll like. If you want your pets to get great care at a good price that's what you need to be prepared for. This is an animal hospital. There's a lot going on. Admissions and releases for surgery, boarding, walk-backs, office visits and emergencies. People that get there after you may get seen before you because they're there for a different kind of visit. If you can't be patient, find a different Vet. I'd be very surprised if the care is as good though. And you'll probably pay more. They take cash or checks only. I suspect that will eventually change, though. Read Less

Aside from long wait times this is a great, affordable vet to visit! Dr. Scott is an AWESOME vet who truly cares! Update: haven gone there multiple times I've actually had two vets besides Dr. Scott now and like them all! Shively Animal has been the vet that my family and I go to for years now. They work extremely well with animals and all of the staff are incredible. I take my rats there nowadays, but they have worked well with our cat and the dogs that we have brought in as well. I know that everywhere in the reviews is saying the wait time is a drawback - and maybe it truly is for some - but the wait time just shows how personal they get with the animals that they are taking care of. I'd be much more concerned if the wait times were shorter. Great place, through and through. Read Less

The way they are set up has an old time feel. Especially the way they keep their files... It's a bit of a small waiting area inside and they are usually quite busy but the wait isn't that long. You can also wait outside if u like or if your animals aren't too fond of waiting with other fur babies and they will call you over the speaker outside when it's your turn... I have always seen them treat all the animals with utmost respect and compassion and no less... My father lost his fur baby a few years back and they more than helped him through the process when he didn't know where to turn to. They even sent him a sympathy card for his loss....I believe almost anybody that has an animal knows this place and loves it. Read Less

Shively is one of the best veterinary clinics in the city. The high demand for their services can lead to some inconvenient wait times, but they more than make up for it in price and quality. All of our pets go to Shively, and the doctors seem to remember details about our pets most of the time despite the large number of animals that they see in a day. I took our three pets , Lily, Layla, and Tilly, to Shively Animal Hospital yesterday as I have been doing For the last several years. Elizabeth was wonderful with our two dogs and cat. She was very calm and professional. We had their shots and nails clipped and I bought heartguard for the two dogs. I even had a question about a growth in one of the dogs and she was able to answer all of my questions and was very pleasant and helpful. They are very reasonable also. Read Less

My Wife purchased a mixed beagle for me for Christmas off of the Craigs List! When we received her we were advised that she was the runt and she was 8 weeks old and she was very timid and will grow out of it. The first night she became very sick and had several seizures. I contacted the Shivley medical center and was told to get her in there asap! When we arrived they took one look at her and rushed her back for treatment! Our new pet was on deaths door and we had to leave her there with the thought that we would never see her again. Well she was there for over a week and Dr. Joyce and her wonderful staff saved our Missy and now she is a normal healthy little girl! The Dr's here have been working with my entire family's menagerie of pets for years...they can help any type of animal that you can call a pet or some that most would not dare to...lol...Dr Mary Jo is the best vet ever & she has an amazing staff of Dr's & assistants that help so very much. They are all so very great with every pet they take under their care. They help to put an ease to very upset pets and seem to calm any very anxious babies down easily with just a touch and kind voice. They get to work with many different animals even ones that are here just visiting but they certainly make their mark. They only do walk-ins but they are definitely worth the wait even if you do wait for hours. They truly work miracles! Thanks to everyone at Shively Animal Hospital! They have to be awesome to wait the wait and general madhouse at the front desk and wait room. They are the cheapest hospital anywhere in the area and are loving and professional. The girls up front amazingly keep their composure on this constant face paced office. They will allow you to come sign in and give you a call when your turn us close so you can leave the campus. These people are wonderful. Had to take my baby in for an emergency visit and they were all so kind to us. They had to keep her overnight and were patient in addressing my concerns, called when they said they would, and were genuinely caring when I called for an update. My son brought his sick dog to Shively for treatment. He called me because he didn't have enough money. They only take checks or cash, i had the flu so I sent his brother with a check. He made out the check for the amount needed and they refused the check without an id. I told him to leave, he broght his dog to Blue Pearl and they treated his dog. In the haste he left my check they refused. Shively Animal Hospital cashed my 600 check they refused, now they are saying he owed 350 and see no problem with their deceitful behavior. I personally got a call from Mary Janee concerned that I was ok with the service provided. I lost a dog due to a neighbor feeding him antifreeze. I could not have been treated better not my dog been taken care of anywhere than with Shively Animal Clinic. They not only care about your pets they care about you as an owner. I would not take any of my animals to any other clinic. The wait is well worth it to know my furbabies are getting the best treatment possible.! Read Less

Wow.. can't say enough Great Positive words...I was so happy with my 1st visit there, in comparison with other veterinarians and clinics ..very happy and satisfied..Yahoo .....finally found a vet I feel that"s honest..Oh yeah ..cleanest animal clinic ever..When I pulled in ,,saw.the parking lot was..clean ..lotsa parking space..they do have technology...so many people have negative reviews..not sure why ...cause this the best animal clinic I've been to. This clinic isn't for everyone. They don't take appointments and you have to stand in line and wait for hours to be seen. So why do I give this clinic five stars? Because I love my dog dearly, and I will gladly make sacrifices to see her well. In fact, we've tried seven different vets, and Mary Jane is the first one I've found that makes me feel like she cares for my dog like she would her own. My dog had a severe allergy case, and the treatment she received not only relieved her allergies, it made her immediately comfortable. The vet also explained why other pricey services (allergy tests and annual electrocardiograms for an enlarged heart) were not needed. This was a breath of fresh air after her last vet wanted $200 to do blood work before she'd administer the vaccinations for her to get her dog license. This is after completing a full-panel of blood work three months prior, and not finding any abnormalities. They provide a tremendous service to the community by providing affordable care, which I am sure enables animals to be seen that might not otherwise get to see a vet. Read Less

Was there today with my cat they turned me away because I couldn't pay the money they wanted. The doctor just felt his tummy said he's got a bladder blockage $650 to treat him 200.00 up front then 3rd day another 200.00 then the rest they would work with me. I don't have that kind of money. I've heard for years that they was the best round that they would work with you but how is that working with me if I don't have the money that they need up front they turn me away with my cat they called an emergency. It's is a non humane veterinarian they will turn your animal away that is very sick. Cause you can't pay on arrival. They took my dog medicine out of my hand and let her leave with a busted tumor bleeding and gushing puss out of the back of her leg after I called and told them I don't have the money atm cause I'm on a fix income they didn't care they deny her infection meds and treatment please do not take your animal there they do not care about the animals they care about money. I got there about thirty minutes before they started seeing patients.  I checked out and was on my way home in about three hours.  I was in the exam room a little over a half hour.  My dog Penelope was seen when we were first taken back.  We waited till it was decided what test we're needed then the doctor came back and explained everything to me and answered all of my question.  The prescriptions were brought to me and we went and checked out.  The clinic called a few hours later with the test results.  Everything went smooth.  I have waited just as long at my vets office. The vets are wonderful and seem to genuinely care. The archaic system they use to keep records is ineffective and the ridiculously long wait is simply unacceptable. I've been coming to Shively for my animals since the 1990's and the least amount of time I've waited to be seen is 3 1/2 hours and the max was 7 1/2. Regardless of their caring and regardless of the price it simply isn't worth coming here. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Read Less

This was my first and maybe last time at Shively Animal Clinic. I was told how busy they are at all times and to arrive early. Despite getting there an hour before they opened, I still waited almost three hours to see a doc!! I was the third person in line when the doors opened. They do not do appts, so people weren't called before me because of that. I was also told to go here because they have 'cheap prices'. NOT!! My pet has an infection and I was charged over $250 bucks!! The blood work was twice as much as the X-rays and I was worried about the price of those. The only difference in charges, from other vets I have been to, is the price of the visit. That was $20 bucks. It wasn't worth driving 40 miles round trip for this. Read Less

Shively animal clinic is way too busy for their own good. I arrived at 540 am on a Friday and they did not see my dog until 355 pm. He was very sick at the time and it was utterly miserable for both of us to wait so long. The lobby is crowded and smelly, and the office staff are very rude and impatient. Their customer service in person is lousy, and even worse for over the phone needs and medication refills. Prepare to be on hold for a looong time and to be treated poorly by any and all office staff involved. That said, the vets there are very knowledgeable and kind- they were incredibly helpful and got our dog on a good track. The actual exam was great- the vets were thorough and willing to adress all my concerns and answer all my questions and you will definitely pay a reasonable price for the visit and meds, but I can't recommend them at all due to their staff's rudeness and total lack of efficiency. The doctors and staff treat and love on the animals like they would their own. The prices are cheaper than most of the other vets in town. People drive for a couple of hours to see the docs here. (I travel 35 minutes each way.) The downside is that they only accept cash or check... no credit cards. Also, be prepared to wait an average of 2-3 hours so bring your favorite book.Read Less

I Love Shively. The people that work there really care about my dogs. They do great work and the prices are Half of what the Salem IN vet charges and other places are even more expensive. I drive an hour just to go to Shively. The wait Is frustrating if you have to see a doctor, but usually the assistants can take care of us. Appointments can be made for surgeries and teeth cleanings. It's definitely worth the wait, price, and distance for me. Read Less

They don't take appointments. You walk in and put your name on the list. Your wait time then depends completely on how many people happen to be on the list at that time. Makes it very hard to plan; will I be here for 30 mins? Or 3 hours?TIP: don't bring in your pet when you go in to get on the list. Leave your pet in the car. They will call you on the intercom, which can be heard inside and outside of the building. Had I known this, it would have saved my poor kitty a lot of stress from being in the waiting room with a lot of dogs. He could have stayed in the car until it was time for his appointment.The reason I'm giving such a high rating is the prices. Kitty had a UTI which required an X ray and antibiotics. Whole thing only cost around $100. And kitty healed up just fine. Read Less

I sincerely do not understand why people rave about this place. I had an awful experience here- Dr. Mary Jane is rude, condescending, and should never deal with the public, ever. Considering how horrible she was to me (she actually criticized me for crying because of a difficult situation with my pet), I'm actually not that convinced she's even good with the animals- I felt no warmth from her. Dr. Joyce is nicer but they always are packed and so all of the staff seems extremely rushed- as if you're burdening them by being there. Seriously, it's like they picked the most unfriendly people in the entire city to staff the reception desk. Not to mention the waiting room is always full and you have to wait for hours since they don't take appointments. People act like the prices are so great but I know of at least a couple different vets that charge only $25-30 for an office visit. Trust me, that extra $5-10 is worth it if you don't want to sit in a packed waiting room for hours, to deal with the staff who are too busy to even care who you are, and then only to be rushed and see the vet for only 3 minutes. Not to mention how stressful it is for many animals to go to the vet, and on top of that if you go to Shively you are making their experience more stressful due to the long wait and overcrowded waiting room. At my new vet's office they are friendly -and treat me and my pets like they are one of the family, and their prices are barely higher than Shively. Plus, they take appointments so I don't have to wait for hours, and they schedule their appointments so their waiting room isn't overcrowded and so the vet has time to spend with you without being rushed. I appreciated how direct and honest she was. She did every, single thing in her power to save her. They even sent her home with a bag of treats to get her to try to eat at no charge. I feel that, unlike other clinics, they are not just trying to make a buck. Every staff member and every doctor is there because they love what they do and they truly care. Yes, you will wait for a long time to be seen. Know that it is well worth it. It dawned on me yesterday on my once a month visit to Shively, that this is the one review that I am the most qualified to write. I have been a customer/client or Shively Animal Hospital for over 25 years and I WILL NOT go anywhere else. I drive from Southern Indiana on a regular basis to go here.I highly recommend them, but there are caveats. First, plan to wait, as there are no appointments and it's on a walk-in basis. Do a 'walk back' for the simpler visits (shots and such) and put your name in and leave and wait for a call if you can. That helps me tremendously. Also, they're old school: no credit cards, files are paper, etc. The staff is mostly great, especially the long time workers but occasionally you'll get one that needs some training, but they usually don't last long there.With that said, they are awesome. They have a lot of vets on staff. They've been there forever and are very affordable. They also are open 7 days a week and have emergency hours 24/7. They truly love animals and are the most caring vet clinic that I've ever been to. I became loyal to them in 1992, while in college, I had a dog with a really rare auto-immune disease. My vet recognized a small pea size hairless spot on my dog as this disease, although it took a biopsy to confirm. He had been to another vet and diagnosed with ringworm, which it looked like. (The other vet clinic had never even heard of his disease: pemphigus.) I was loyal after that. I have 3 cats and 1 dog and that has pretty much been the case for 20+ years. They've gone above and beyond and extended the lives of my dogs and cats that suffered from things like kidney and auto-immune diseases. When they've been in the hospital, I've received daily updates from my vet, even on his off days when he makes his rounds. My vet is that kind of vet. The money I've spent I believe would've been almost doubled elsewhere. I know it would; I've checked around. They've also been gracious and caring at the end of life care and arrangements that can be so incredibly difficult.They are not perfect but they're darn close, when all things are taken into account. The wait time (popularity) and the people that drive so far to come here, are a testament to the kind of service provided. I wouldn't trust my furry kids with anyone else. Read Less

I took my iguana there for surgery--she needed about a half inch of her tail amputated. Dr. Mary Jane did a great job. The entire staff was excellent. Everyone made sure I knew what was happening and they updated me as soon as the surgery was over. These were some of the most knowledgeable and caring vets and vet techs I have encountered. I loved them so much that I am bringing my new mini pig for neutering later this week--this is the only vet in my vicinity that understands how to sedate pigs safely. Two other clinics wanted to sedate my pig with the wrong anesthesia, which could have killed him if I didn't know better and listened to them. The cost of the neuter is 2/3 less than one of the prior clinic's estimate and the iguana's tail amputation cost less than a typical exam fee for an exotic animal--their pricing is super fair. Yes, the wait is long; however, given their business model, it makes sense. They provide affordable, reliable vet care to all animals on a walk-in basis. They make it fair for everyone. You are seen in the order you arrive. Most vets charge a lot more and you get a lot less care. Read Less

I brought my beagle Lucy in today, the wait was long, yes, however the price was wonderful and the staff truly loves what they do. The doctor we seen was very nice and helpful and I loved that he took time to let my Lucy warm up to him and pet her and let her feel comfortable. My daughter was with me and it was nice that she could see when purchasing baby Lucy has to go to the doctor, they are nice to her. The staff at the front desk was very nice, they are VERY busy, but they are nice and do their job well given the large numbers of people and situations they deal with everyday. The lady at checkout was so kind, I only took out what I thought I would need and she was nice enough to let me go to the ATM and get the rest out, super nice of her and I appreciated they let me do that. Fantastic vets and an extremely low price for veterinary care. Now for the reason of the 3 stars the wait is absolutely terrible. First you can NOT make appointments, second the wait is terrible even when you get here early in the morning, third you have the choice on submitting your name and they will call you when they are ready to see your baby (great idea but you still have to wait for a very long time when you arrive) usually over an hour. We dropped out dogs off at 7:50am for a bath and vaccinations we were called at 3:41 to say they were ready for pick up. We arrived at Shively at 5:00 and waited 40 minutes to have us walk back and speak with the technician about their baths and vaccines. We are now still waiting. This makes for a very long day!!!!P.S.  You will see all kinds of animals and people at Shively. It can be interesting. Read Less

Shively Animal Clinic is a long-standing, family-owned clinic that is loved by their community. Every vet and staff member works extremely hard to take care of the fur babies walking into their door. When my animals have needed a bigger procedure, especially a surgery, Shively is where I go first. They are up to 50% cheaper than other clinics. They are also open on Sundays, which isn't always the norm.The biggest challenge going here is they do not take appointments. Be prepared to wait HOURS to see a vet, especially if you request a specific person. If you live nearby, you can sign in & be called to come back closer to time. Pack a book, your laptop, etc. to keep your patience while waiting. Read Less

So I take all three of my dogs here.  Been going for about a year and I will sum it up quickly:PROS: *Not as expensive as other places*Friendly staff, they don't refer to them as dogs/cats they are your babies*Open long hours*When I have called I'm never on hold that longCONS:*When you go be prepared to wait.  No appointments so get there about 6:30 am because they open at 7 if you don't want to be waiting for hours. (I will note that if it is going to be a long wait you can sit in your car and they will page you over the intercom or call your cell phone)*They don't take credit cards*If you go mid day or later sometimes it is hard to find a parking spaceAll in all I would say take your pets here.  They will be taken care of and they don't charge you an arm or leg.  They were $250 cheaper than my vet for shots on my dogs.  Dr. Mary Jane is who I saw last time I had a bad health problem with my dog and you could tell she loved what she did.  You really can't go wrong with this place.
