Words do not exist in the human language to convey the extent to which I recommend AHC. Dr. Leonards and Dr. Hackett along with EVERY single member of their staff are beyond amazing in so many ways! I apologize for the storybook that is to follow for this review – but please note that what I am writing does not even begin to scratch the surface of how grateful I am to be a part of the AHC patient family for the past 5 years.
All three of my animals (Gus – 14 years old, Groot – 1.5 years old, and Murray – 1 year old) have been treated as family and not simply patients from Day 1. They always take the time in each appointment to explain and answer any and everything. I never once felt rushed or as though Gus, Groot, or Murray were not properly or extensively evaluated. I also never once left feeling confused or unsure of what was going on or what the plan was (if a plan was needed).
I have countless stories that demonstrate AHC’s compassion, kindness, and overall dedication to animals but I will limit myself to this one...I initially found AHC by random chance – My dog Gus had surgery for a torn ACL (in Lake Charles, my hometown) and upon returning to Baton Rouge I immediately noticed his leg was quite swollen. I called a couple of vets nearby who told me they were closing and would not be able to see Gus. I finally called AHC - who also was closing but told me they would stay open to see Gus and to simply get there as soon as we could. AHC – a clinic to which we had no connection or history - stayed open just to see Gus. Long story short but Gus’ surgery had been botched and his leg not properly bandaged so things could have gone terribly wrong had he not seen a vet immediately.
Dr. Leonards and Dr. Hackett are also both brilliant. They make it a point to stay up to date on the latest research (general health – including diet, surgery techniques, medical treatments, etc…) and share when relevant in all appointments – this is of utmost importance to me. They always take the individual animal (and all/any associated issues) into consideration and are cautious (in the best way possible) before recommending diets/treatments/procedures – which is imperative in my opinion as what may work for one animal may not for another.
Savannah - the lead vet tech- is also both brilliant and compassionate beyond belief. She always makes me and my animals feel taken care of and comfortable no matter what the situation (a routine vaccination or bloodwork or a more serious issue). Similar to Dr. Leonards and Dr. Hackett, she takes the time to listen to what is going on and will answer the millions of questions you have no matter how rational or irrational your questions may be (and when irrational….she does so with no judgment whatsoever :)).
One last thing I want to mention, as I believe this is extremely rare with a vet clinic. When your animal is simply happy and healthy or goes through something and gets better – the vets and staff will celebrate with you in the most sincere way possible. One example – Gus had been limping and we (me, the vets, lead vet tech, and staff) were worried that he may need surgery. He was 13 at the time and the recovery from the surgery would have been quite extensive and the surgery not a guaranteed success, so we decided to watch Gus for a few weeks while he did a couple of rounds of acupuncture along with Chinese herbs. When I brought Gus for a re-check, he was walking without a limp (and without favoring one side)…he even trotted down the hall for a treat. Upon seeing this, Dr. Hackett threw his hands up in the air and said “Yes! I am just so happy and relieved to see this...” Another Gus example - Dr. Leonards heard a very mild heart murmur recently and referred Gus to a cardiologist – when we came back from the cardiologist with the best news possible given the situation, Dr. Leonards expressed how worried he had been and how happy he was to hear this news. For both of these particular situations (and others) - Savannah too was right there celebrating with us all. Again, I could go on and on with stories for each of my animals but I will stop here.
Let me end on this note - Gus is 14 – we have lived in many cities throughout the years and seen many different vets. I have never once recommended a vet privately or publicly until now. We have recently moved to Lexington, KY and one of the hardest things for me was knowing I would have to find another vet...AHC has set the bar to an unprecedented high that no vet can ever come close to.
