I have been taking my dog here and boarding him with highland road for three years. They have fair prices and don't push things on you. The vets r always really friendly and handle the dogs well. They also offer boarding and day care. My dog loves it and is always excited to go back . Read Less

I recently moved to Baton Rouge about 4 months ago and decided to take my fur baby to the Highland Animal hospital because of its close location to my house and the reviews saying that it was a clean, professional facility. To make a long story short, they killed my healthy, beautiful Great Dane/ Pit Bull mix puppy. I took her to their facility yesterday morning to get updated on her vaccinations and also to get spayed. I dropped Nala off at 7:49AM to get the procedure with an expectation that I would be picking her up after work later on that afternoon. By 1:17PM, I received a call that my baby had passed away. Of course I was hysterical, and I immediately rushed to their facility to make sure I had heard them correctly over the phone. When I asked them what happened and how could my perfectly healthy baby die from a very common surgery, all they told me was that the surgery went well and everything seemed fine....then as they were finalizing the last suture for her stitches, her heart rate dropped. They claimed that they performed CPR for 1+ hour before she passed away. I was completely furious and devastated. To make matters worse, I had JUST taken her to them almost 1.5-2 months ago for a check up and vaccinations and everything was FINE, so I was completely blindsided by all of it. Nobody in the facility would even LOOK at me as I asked questions and sobbed over the body of my precious fur baby. They were cold, informal and simply told me they’d have her ashes ready for me within a week. Nothing will bring my sweet girl back to me, but I want to caution anyone who is considering taking their pet to this vet - LOOK ELSEWHERE IF YOU CAN! They are negligent and lack compassion at this animal hospital. Save yourself the devastation and heartache that I’m currently experiencing and go somewhere else. Please. Read Less

We were lucky to have this place so close to our friends house. Our dog fell into our friends pool and deeply cut up her leg. The folks at HRAH were able to see her right away and get her stitched up in a few hours. Their staff is knowledgeable and cares about the animals and the owners. My dog was hit by a car, called the animal hospital and they stayed open after hours to help. We ended up having to take our dog to LSU ER and they let us use their only stretcher to keep our dog comfortable. They were so nice and definitely went above and beyond to help. The staff and vets are the best. I brought one of my dogs in when he was injured and my regular vet couldn't fit him in. Highland Road saw him within an hour of my call and were absolutely wonderful to me and my dog. The vet was so thorough on her exam she found a tumor my previous vet thought was a swollen lymphnode. Now I'm taking all 8 of my dogs here and always get excellent service. Even when I had to say goodbye to one of my dogs they were so sweet and made a paw print for me and even sent me a sympathy card. Dr. O'Neil at HRAH is an angel. My poor little kitty has bladder blockage issues. She was extremely thorough, personal, and caring with my kitty son. They are truly caring, competent doctors who want the best for your pet, and aren't out to rob you of all your money. I board my dog her when I have to go out of town for work. They were one of the cheaper nice places around town. There is a discount on play care when you are boarding your dog too which is great. The only thing I would love to see more of is the FaceBook pictures to see how your dog is doing. Especially when it's a week long stay. Even better idea would be to have the live play care cams to be able to see the dogs playing...then they wouldn't have to worry about taking photos of boarded dogs during their stay. Read Less

I absolutely LOVE my vet, Dr. Fox, but have had very negative experiences with the techs and front desk people. I had several questions for my vet (she was in the clinic) and they kept running back and forth asking questions and giving me answers, and I finally asked if I could just speak with her. They said yes, I asked her maybe 5 minutes of questions, then the front desk girl charged me for a $50 visit without my knowledge and when I was highly upset about not being informed, she ignored me and walked away. They are very expensive and can sometimes be rude, but my vet is worth it so I put up with it. Read Less

The veterinary care seemed great, but I will never ever board my pet here again.  I researched places to board my 6 month old puppy and heard great reviews about Highland Road. I saw that they have playcare, which is what I was looking for because a 6 month old puppy does not need to be locked in a cage all day. I was excited to know that he would get play time everyday. When I dropped him off, I filled out the playcare questionnaire and everything seemed great. I also brought a blanket and safe toys for him to play with. I had a friend call and check on him, and she was told that he was doing great and played well with others during playcare. However, when we picked him up, there was a totally different story. They bring us into a room and the doctor tells us that he had diarrhea and she prescribed medicine and they had to bathe him. That part was great, and I am grateful that they handled the problem. However, when they brought him into the room, he was sad, not excited to see us, and looked skinny.  I then asked if he played well during playcare, and they replied, "oh we were not able to do it because our yard is being redone." Instead of saying what I wanted to say, I just wanted to get my puppy home, so I held my tongue.  After paying, I asked for the blanket and toys that I had brought. The blanket apparently had not been used and the toys were still in the bag untouched. Again, I didn't say anything, and just left. My puppy, who is usually extremely playful and excited, slept in my lap the entire way home and for the rest of the day. While on our way home, we get a call that they made a mistake with the bill and charged us for 1 day of playcare which he didn't get but only 1 day of medication administration instead of 6, so I now owe $12. What I haven't mentioned is that I am currently a vet tech at LSU and worked at a vet clinic for 5 years before that. Not once have I ever seen a vet call an owner to pay $12 when it was the employee who made a mistake. Also, I thought he got at least one day of playcare because my friend was told that he had just finished with it. Apparently that was a lie because they were taking the charge off. I am furious, because I put everything together and realized 1) they had to have known that their yard was getting worked on and should have told me when I dropped off that he would not be getting playcare2) they lied to my friend when she called3) he didn't have a blanket, toys, or playtime for 6 days4) I would have taken him to a place that was a little bit more expensive that would have given him plenty of playtime, if I had known that he would have sat in a concrete box with nothing to play with that whole time.Never ever again Read Less

I loved this vet.  The facilities were brand new and always clean.  My cat had a lot of health issues (older guy) and they were great about explaining everything.  They always asked how aggressively or not I wanted to pursue his chronic diagnoses to make sure I was comfortable with his quality of life and the cost of treatment.  Yes, the prices were not the lowest in town, but I think that you're getting quality here.  When in doubt or if cost is a major concern, ask up front for clarification. The vets and office staff were friendly and more than willing to have that conversation when I brought it up.I also used the cat condo boarding a lot.  Again, while a little more expensive than other places in town, it was definitely the nicest and I had peace of mind that he was at his own vet if something happened while I was away. Crazy, insanely expensive vet. The vets are overly judgmental and very unclear on pricing for procedures.  I was charged over $700 to get my puppy spayed and do her last two rounds of shots. I was told they did a "puppy package" so when I was charged nearly $300 for my first puppy exam, I thought that I was paying for entire package too.  I was a little shocked when I was hit for the $550 bill for the spay operation and next round of shots a few weeks later, but what could I do?  They had already preformed the operation.  People often say that Highland is the best vet in town, but I think you can get the same quality of care without the insane prices from many other local vets.  Try Perkins Road Vet Hospital instead.  I switched my dog and cat over to their care and I think they pay more attention to details, make very informed treatment decisions, and charge very fair prices.
