Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital

Baton Rouge, Louisiana
General Info
Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital, located in Baton Rouge, is a vital part of the veterinary community. Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital helps families in Baton Rouge and surrounding Louisiana areas by strategically arranging appointments to minimize disruptions and enhance wellness. The visit starts by allowing the animals to enter the room at their own pace. Staff observe the movement patterns across the zones and establish time taken to settle while identifying dominant response cues like touch sound and scent. Veterinary evaluations focus on hydration, skin elasticity, range of motion, teeth, coat and weight balance. They also thoroughly discuss with us any changes in the pet’s sleeping habits or feeding schedules and perceived energy around the house. Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital offers services like vaccinations, blood work, mobility support, dental health planning, preventive advice, surgical preparation, and ongoing care strategies. Services are offered either step by step or all at once depending on the pet’s sensory needs. Some families choose to have several small visits for staged support, and others choose a single longer appointment with the help of additional resources at home. Every plan stems from follow-through ability, which encompasses things such as caregiver emotional burden, pet resilience and household scheduling effects (i.e., car vs public transportation). These appointments also give you time for side notes and sharing (or hearing) stories, which is especially helpful for new pet parents and those managing chronic conditions. Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital helps pet families in Baton Rouge and surrounding Louisiana areas make veterinary care a natural part of their lives rather than something to be feared or avoided, which opens doors for connection and lasting wellness habits. Popular services offered by the facility include spay/neuter, orthopedic surgery, dental care, regenerative medicine, vaccinations, laboratory, emergency care, bloodwork, surgery and pain management. Whether it is a routine wellness program or a complex medical condition, pet owners have full confidence in Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital because the staff maintains the highest standards through open communication. The team remains devoted to continual advancement and community interaction, making sure pets in Baton Rouge and across the United States receive the highest quality care.

Over priced. They were charging me $60 to clean out his ears where at his new vet only charges $20. Also, they would make me come back 2 weeks after his ear cleaning to make sure there was no infection and charged me for a full exam when all he did was lift my dogs ears. While we went through the run around a couple of times with this by the first visit of my new vet she said my dog had a staph infection and that's why my dogs ears looked the way they did but Some how after all this "check up exams" they charged me for at Perkins road vet hospital they never noticed this.. There are a few other things as well. When I confronted them about their pricing the way I was spoken to was completely unprofessional. That right there was enough for me to never come back. They were so rude to me when I simply asked why it was priced the way it was. Don't recommend! Read Less

After being lied to  by vets in New Orleans, I decided to bring my dog to LSU vet clinic to try to get some straight answers, also for my own peace of mind.  The specialists at LSU were helpful in giving me some peace of mind and answering questions about the status of my dog's health.  The receptionist scheduled my pet in for 8:30 for a dental on a Tuesday morning.  She said she would call LSU to get most of my dog's current health records.  I also asked the Ophthalmologist's assistant at LSU to send in my dog's records.  I got there on Tuesday morning and was told by Dr. Richie's surgical assistant that they had no records from LSU.  If even true, why was that?  I had those records with me, anyway.  So I was a little uncomfortable because I never met this doctor before, and had questions to ask about my dog's dental procedure,  which was pre-scheduled.  They later said it would be $424.99 if no other problems were found.  I got a call from the receptionist who said my dog was under anesthesia and the total for the procedure would be $1,934.29 and she was going to have 26 teeth pulled.  I told her to send me an email confirming this and what needed to be done. So I had the receptionist text me the amount since she claimed they didn't do emails.  Probably would take 5 minutes.  Why is that?  Then I later got a call and was told to be there for 5:30.  They close at 5:30.  I was there for 5:15.  They tried to force me to pay the vet bill without even seeing my pet.  They gave me her so-called medicines and wouldn't let me see her.  I was obviously distressed and distraught over this, I thought maybe they really killed her.  So I finally see my dog at about 6:30 after observing their circus.  It took probably an hour of watching the staff act like buffoons, monkeying around with trying to get me to pay the bill, without letting me see my dog.So we got home and the receptionist Lee called me the next day to check on her.  After that, I had some questions about my dog's recovery.  Such as - why wasn't she drinking water?  Why no bowel movements for several days?  I never spoke with Julie, I spoke with Lee but every time Julie picked up the phone she indicated that I was a big problem.  She obviously didn't like me following up on my pets recovery.  I also had another question about my dog's recovery and they (Lee)  tried to force me to see another vet about a matter that was occurring post-op at their hands.  But we got that straight.  Also every time I called to ask a question, whenever Julie answered the phone she would indicate to me I was harassing them and I was a problem.  Because I was calling to ask question or two about my pet's recovery, you spark this attitude towards me?  I wasn't even speaking to that evil witch, I was communicating with Lee. One Saturday I called in during working hours to ask about my dogs recovery and I was told by Lee that the doctor was "jogging in the woods". I didn't even get a return phone call Monday morning!  I suspect that lying asshole Julie was part of this problem and that is interesting because I NEVER even spoke with her other than to ask to speak to Lee or the doctor.  But then when my dog saw this vet for her 14 day  checkup, I got no post op instructions on the best way to care for her teeth.  So I emailed the doc? on Tuesday.  Got no response by Friday, 3 working days later.  So I chewed the vet? out then.  He responded Saturday and accused me of harassing him while his family was on vacation.  Sorry but you are a surgeon, and part of your practice is to care for your patients, and sometimes you have to follow up with answers to your clients questions about your patients even if it is a little inconvenient.  In this situation, it was RIDICULOUS!  I should have been given post-op long term dental care instructions. I  only called in during working hours with questions and should have not been treated with this crappy ATTITUDE!  What if my dog really did have an emergency while a patient at this practice?  She would have been in big trouble.  I think Dr. Ritchie is a competent surgeon, based on what I understand about her dental status now and how she appears to feel.  But the attitude here is they just don't want to mess around with post op care questions or concerns, and "vacations" and "hiking in the woods" are more important than answering your questions about your dogs post-op care, even when they come up during working hours.  They will charge you alright, but once you pay the bill then you have to deal with getting them to follow through in making sure your post-op recovery questions are answered.  Then they tried to boss me around and tell me where I was going to go for my dog's vet care next.  Why would I trust them after their "professional conduct" indicated to me that they are just lazy or have other priorities and they don't care?  "Pay the inflated bill and get out" is the attitude here, and for that reason I don't recommend them. High quality care at very reasonable prices for exams and shots. After years of struggling with digestive problems with my cat, Dr. Ritchie advised me to try a very easy and inexpensive solution that was never recommended to me to before. A few weeks later, problem solved. I feel that Dr. Ritchie is very attentive to details and less likely to jump to the most expensive solution first and instead start with practical, conservative measures before asking patients to fork out hundreds of dollars. If you are looking for outstanding quality and care for your dog or cat, especially for issues related to oral and dental health, Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital is the only place you need visit. I was referred to PRVH because my 11-year-old basset hound needed extensive oral surgery requiring multiple extractions and the repair of an oronasal fistula. Dr. Curt Ritchie and his staff spent the first part of our consultation building a rapport with my girl. This was extremely important to me because I promised my dog when we rescued each other that from that day forward she would have a good life for the rest of her days. After the examination, Dr. Ritchie carefully explained what he was going to do and made sure that all of my questions were answered and fears were allayed before I scheduled the surgery. On the day of the surgery, I was kept updated on my girl's status and in the days following the surgery, the staff called to check up on their patient. Dr. Ritchie and his staff made sure that I was able to keep my promise and his work improved my girl's quality of life immeasurably. She was always a sweet and happy girl, but her sweetness and happiness has increased exponentially in the 5+ weeks since her surgery. Read Less

The vets at Perkins Road Vet Hospital are smart and caring, but if you're looking for a good deal, they're not the ones to go to. They charged me over $100 for antibiotics for my dog which they gave to me at the clinic at checkout, but I could have easily gotten the same thing at Walmart for $4. I will no longer take my dog to them because I believe that part of treating a patient with respect is not gouging them for their money.Read Less

I gave flea treatment for my cat three months ago by spending $200 (including $80 medicine fee) in this hospital. I used their medicine within the last three months several times, the flea&tick problem never get better. The only way to control is to take a bath for my cat every week and kill most of the fleas manually. Finally, I call back to the hospital to seek their solution (what I want is another free treatment since I spend much money and they should make it works). However, after long time argument, they refuse my requirement and give me two option: 1) go to their hospital and buy another product; 2) go to another hospital. They really sucks!!!

Read Less
