Last week, I took my dachshund (Cleo) to Dodge City; to have a growth on her foot, looked at. The vet took a sample of the fluids and determined it could be cancerous. And she advised that the growth to be removed that day. I was hesitant, because the next day was Thanksgiving, and I didn?t want my dog staying over the holidays. The vet assured me that even though the office closed at noon (cause of the holidays), I could pick her up at 4 that afternoon. Before I left, I paid the bill so that in the afternoon I would not have to worry about the bill. About 2 hours later the vet called, and said that Cleo did very well in surgery. But when they opened the kennel cage, she tried to run out, and fell and busted her lip (she was still under anesthesia). The vet wanted to put her on anti-inflammatory just as a precaution, because of dachshund?s long backs. At 4 o?clock I picked up Cleo. Before I left I was charged for the anti-inflammatory, (which was a little aggravating, but it wasn?t a big deal). She had 2 or 3 staples in her foot. I asked if her foot needed a bandage, so she would not get it dirty, when she goes outside to go potty, and if she needed any antibiotics, they said no, she well be fine. I took Cleo home and laid her in the cage that was set up for her, and I kept a very close eye on her. When she tried to stand up she would cry. Not even 30 minutes after getting home, a staple was coming out of her foot, and the incision was opened. I called the vet, and of course, the answering service said they were closed until Saturday morning (Thanksgiving Holidays), and told me to go to the animal hospital. I spent the evening at the animal hospital. The animal hospital had to sedate her again, they took out the staples and tried to reclose incision using stitches. An hour later Cleo came walking out from the back, hobbling a little, but far from crying. Her foot was bandaged, they gave her some antibiotics to take home, and they suggested that I buy an e-collar (they said that when the foot started to heal it would start itching and she might try to take off the bandage). I went back the vet today to talk to them. They tried telling me that the dog tried to take the staple out (I watched her the entire 30 minutes she was at home). Then they said it could have come out because her foot started to swell. Obviously the feet do swell more, that?s the lowest part of your body (but they supposedly had given her anti-inflammatory medicine, when she fell out of the cage). They said that they use staples quite often! Umm, they won?t be using staples on my animals again. In a couple of days we are supposed to go have her stitches removed, I?ll be finding another vet!!
