If you go here, pack a lunch. The average wait time (from my last 4 visits) is 4-6 HOURS. There were no emergencies, no client back-up, just incompetence and lack of interest. I was there with my bird today for over 5 hrs and never got seen. When I came out of the exam room after 2 hrs to see if there was a problem, the vet had his feet up, joking with his staff and playing with his dog. The contempt and indifference towards clients is shocking. Dr Rich has no interest or concern about his patients. Thank goodness that this was a recheck and not a sick bird. I will never return to this place again. It is horrifying. Read Less

Dr. Rich is the only vet I've ever taken my pet to. He is highly recommended for exotic pets, especially bunnies. Very inviting staff. They even have a dog that hangs out in the office and delivers paper work to the front desk. Bunnies are always in the waiting room to entertain you while you wait. They have no knowledge that my feathered love ones have been there at all. Shame on you A&E A.H. Now they require a full examination of your pet ($71) before they can even start trimming their nails which is an addition eight bucks. One more thing- the lady answering the phone seem to be aggravated like if I was a bother. Before they moved, they were their staff was extremely friendly, hospitable and to walk-ins without an issue. Dr. Rich and Dr. Pence are both the best doctors for ferrets I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My little ferret had hypoglycemia and ended up with cancer. By the time I found them it was too late. They treated him with chemo and gave my little boy almost 7 extra months with us. After 9 years of being in the family it was agony to say goodbye, but when I saw his pain it was time to let go. Dr. Pence was right there with me to help him go home. They did their best to take care of Oli, but unfortunately he passed away the next day. Dr. Rich called to check up on him, and I could hear in his voice that he was saddened to hear about the loss. A few days later, we got a sympathy card in the mail. Talk about caring for patients! So impressed. He even went above and beyond to try to find us a closer vet - but after such a good impression - We'll make the drive! I brought my greenwinnged macaw into Dr Hill's office because she began plucking herself.  I thought that it might be because of her diet or because of mites or some type of parasites.  Dr Hill did a physical exam and say the a $200 blood test was needed.  Her blood test came by ok. Such things as cholesterol levels and triclestorides. Ok, great.  He said that more of a behavioral issue and that he would contact me with a game plan.  Twice I have been contacted by someone at his office.  First said Dr dealing with emergency situations and that he would call me back with a game plan for my baby.  I waited about 2 weeks.  Only to get another voicemail message saying that there were issues with their new location and if I wanted to receive info via text or email.  I didn't spend close to $300 and travel 60 miles to get information from the internet.  I did that from my home.  And now the friend that referred me to Dr Hill is advising me to look for another Dr. Bottom line.  I brought my baby in over a month ago, her blood work came back great. Behavior issues,  we will talk with you about a  plan. Only to get first that the Dr would call me with a plan.  Then on second contact was to send info via text or email.  So disappointed. Read Less

Would give 10 stars if I could. My boyfriend and I had quite the scare last night when we came home from our day trip to Gulf Shores (making it through a total 9 hours of Labor Day traffic) to find that my diamondback terrapin's head had been stuck in our new filter. She looked like death-- just awful, head swollen, legs limp, and barely breathing. It was about 11 pm and no place was open. We were provided Dr. Rich's home phone number (impressive!!) by our usual exotic animal vet's 24-hour hotline when they couldn't give us advice as to how to handle the situation. I don't have dogs, or children, so my turtles are like my babies and I was so emotional. Dr. Rich listened and gave us advice on how to give Penny her best chance. His confidence immediately gave me peace of mind, but he did tell us that there was less than a 50% chance she would live-- based on her symptoms and the fact that we had no idea how long she had been stuck in the filter. He told us that if she made it through the night, her odds would be better and he could see her immediately in the morning. We stayed up all night, and followed Dr. Rich's advice... And she is doing wonderfully now just 24 hours later. She is not displaying any signs of respiratory distress, just a bit of swelling left around her eyes. Labor Day was also my birthday and Dr. Rich gave me a true gift. I am so thankful for his compassion, knowledge, dedication, and selflessness. If anyone in the greater New Orleans area ever needs a small animal vet, I highly recommend their services. Read Less

West Esplanade Veterinary Clinic is all about the money! 2/23/15 I took my very sick iguana in for an emergency visit to West Esplanade Veterinary Clinic. This was my first visit to the clinic and right away felt that they were more about the money than treating a sick animal. Everywhere you looked in the office was the vet commercializing and marketing something. During the course of my visit my bill was revised several times and each time credit card was charged right away as the bill kept going up and up. I knew going in that my Iguana looked very bad and after the diagnosis asked them to be straight with me on the changes he had for recovery. They assured me that with the proper treatment and if I signed here his recover would be fine. Sadly the next day my iguana was dead. I do not blame them for the death of my pet but as professionals if an animal is not going to make it they should not be so eager to take advantage of the grief of a pet owner and add insult to the loss of the animal. Bottom line this place is all about the money! You will be charged till it is last breath while they are telling you it will be okay if you authorize another $200 fee. Read Less

We took our ferret, Azriel, to Dr. Rich today (it's sunday). He was more than happy to come in on his day off and help us. His wife, Renee, came with him to help out also. They are the sweetest, most knowledgeable, and kindest people ever!!! Our little boy was having trouble going to the bathroom and we weren't sure why. Dr. Rich instantly took him back for an x-ray while his wife sat with us and chatted about how awesome our ferret is. Turns out Azriel had a bladder stone. Dr. Rich was going to schedual a surgery for later in the week but after trying to flush the stone back into his bladder he realized it was more serious. He told us he was going to do the surgery tonight and take him to his home afterwards to observe him. I never thought a vet would take an animal to their personal home to make sure he was ok. We had the best experience and we know we can trust him for any other needs we may have regarding our ferrets. I can't get over how kind and concerned they both were about the well being of our little furry friend. I would reccomend Dr. Rich to anyone with a small animal or bird. He is the BEST!!! Read Less

Dr. Rich is the only vet I've ever taken my pet to. He is highly recommended for exotic pets, especially bunnies. Very inviting staff. They even have a dog that hangs out in the office and delivers paper work to the front desk. Bunnies are always in the waiting room to entertain you while you wait. The only thing I didn't like was the parking...it's on a busy service road, but you can always just park around the corner on the less busy side. I recommend dr. Rich to anyone with a pet bunny for sure.Read Less

As much as I liked this place back in 2009, I know am very disappointed with them. They have lost the medical records for my parrots. Now it seems they treat it more like business that simply is worried about production (money); Very cold. Read Less

I have never seen such love and heartfelt empathy before. Especially for a pet that was not hers but mine. If I had only known them sooner. A few weeks ago, my daughter's ball python was very ill. They got us in on an emergency visit while we were in town (we live in Foley, AL). We now have a new little snake named Alex, and I'm about to call for a check up appointment - just to make sure we don't have the same experience we had with our sweet Oli.

Read Less

After 2 hours of calling trying to find a vet that could see our veiled chameleon with mouth rot on a Saturday I was finally referred here. We saw Dr. Pence who agreed to see us even though it was Saturday. She was so friendly and easy to speak with. She examined and cleaned our chameleon's mouth thoroughly and gently, checked her weight and skeletal structure for any other issues. Dr Pence asked about our husbandry to trouble shoot what may have caused the mouth rot and how to correct any issues going forward. She said she'll check in on Monday to see how things are going and to make a follow up appointment in two weeks. I am so happy I decided to take her in today and not wait. Read Less

Anyone who have every had a sick pet knows the importance of a great vet, I can speak from personal experience. Dr. Greg Rich is by far the best avian vet in the area. Dr. Rich has over 20+ years of experience with only avian (birds) and exotic animals. Just like people would seek a specialist, Dr. Rich is exactly that for your pet bird. I would not trust my little guy to anyone but Dr. Rich! His clinic was severely damaged from the Hurricane Katrina flooding but is now totally rebuilt and better than ever. West Esplanade also offers boarding (or ""bird camp"" as we call it!) if you are going out of town and your feather friend's need a qualified caretaker.
