I brought my rescue pup here for his puppy shots, therefore, we were there frequently in the beginning. Each time we went a different dr saw him. I was ok with that but then things started to happen that concerned me.Once after a routine fecal exam I asked about the results and was told that " no call meant everything was ok" , but then the vet found no results documented in his chart. Another time I brought him in to simply have his nails clipped and I was not allowed back with him. The first time they clipped his nails I was present and there were no issues so not too concerned; however, the next time we had to go to vet, he was scared and I had to pick him up to bring to the back. This visit was because he was dragging his butt and had diarrhea. After we went to the exam room they took him to another room to expel anal gland. I was not allowed to go with him again. I brought a stool sample for testing and again no word from them. I called and was told the test came back negative. When I asked what to do about the diarrhea I was told that the vet would call me back. After several hours I called back and was told that the vet would be leaving in the next hour or so and that she was off the next day, so it would be two days before she would call and that another dr could not call me. I never got a call back. Read Less

This has been our vet for a long time in New Orleans and I have loved this place. From check ups to more serious issues with our pups they have been great to us. When first coming here we just had one dog who is a rescue and absolutely terrified of most men and who gets really anxious away from us. They were very patient with him and helped him feel relaxed in the office which means a lot to us. They never made us feel rushed as vet offices had in the past when our dog took longer to examine. Some vets have gotten frustrated with him because he is very cautious about people touching him and tends to try to hide behind us. This vet was so sweet with him and made him relax enough and warm up to them to be examined without being forced. Our second pup we adopted from Jefferson SPCA and was actually taken care of by SAF and they recognized him when we brought him in for his first appointment after adopting him. They were so excited to see him find a home and took pictures of him when he walked in to share with other people in the office to show he'd been adopted. I thought that really showed how much they care about the animals they see. Also, more recently the same pup had a scare with chewing on a bottle of ibuprofen and ingesting some of it. It was a terrifying situation for us and we took him to the emergency room first and once he'd been with them a couple days they said we could take him home at night but to return to our vet to get him on IVs throughout the day for about a week. SAF kept in constant contact with the ER and us and were so wonderful with him through that horrible week. I'll be forever grateful for the care they showed our little guy during recovery. He made a 100% recovery and gives big kisses to the folks at SAF whenever we go in. Also worth note the cost here is so much more reasonable then any place we've had in the past and this was just a huge bonus for us because we are so happy with the animal care they provide. Highly recommend! Read Less

Just like the other reviewers stated. The front staff is terrible. Their customer service is almost nonexistent. If you get a thank you or a helpful, friendly tone you'll be very lucky. They act like they hate their job, hate animals and you. By the way, they are a sneaky bunch. Make sure you check your receipts and get a quote before you agree to anything. Here are the facts without my emotional additives: My landlords pit bull attacked my dog. Broke through a glass window to do it. Both dogs were brought here. The pits glass cuts were worse than my Ridgebacks nose so they fixed him first. While the female vet came out to discuss the pit, the tall male vet came out to tell me they were closing so I'd need to take him to an emergency vet. Obviously upset, I stated the obvious that they helped one dog (who was originally adopted from this place and is now an overly aggressive monster due to the vets poor training tips of giving him treats while he's attacking to distract him???) but now won't help mine."Um. What do you expect? You came in late in the day. My nurses have kids and families to get to and I can't do it alone. It's not that I won't help him, it's that I cant."Understandably upset, I asked for the emergency vets info and said "fine, just give me my dog."The vet turned to walk away before stopping to turn back to me, scoff, start to say something then stop, shake his head and keep walking as he passed through the back and said "get the big dog out."They gave him back to me still covered in blood but with his nose flushed.Based on the female vets info she gave my landlord about the pit, they have a knowledgeable staff as far as she is concerned. However their other vet could use some serious sensitivity training. And perhaps the whole staff need further instruction on how to not train a scared puppy to be a monster.Took my dog to prytania emergency vet and will leave a review for them as well. Very happy with them. Read Less

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. My little miniature Yorkie and I fled South Florida when we were in the direct path of Hurricane Matthew (I know New Orleans folks can€t relate to that at all!). My little 2-pound dog has kidney disease and gets IV fluids daily from my regular vet. I researched vets online and found a few places, and this one had high ratings and wasn€t overly far from where we were staying. Now I know why it was so highly rated. I called and spoke to Anne, the director, and explained the situation. She could NOT have been nicer € the very definition of Southern hospitality. My regular vet in South Florida was boarded up and closed for the storm, and therefore unreachable, and she made me feel so comfortable bringing him there. I loved that there were two entrances, one each for cats and dogs, and despite a constant flow of dogs and their owners coming in when we were there every day, it was clean and had no smell. The vet techs (whose names, unfortunately, I didn€t learn) were wonderful, even letting us come in on Sunday, when the regular office is closed, for him to get his fluids. Whenever we were there, they all loved on my dog and Anne spent time talking with me about her city € of which she€s obviously proud, and rightfully so € and telling me the best ways to get around. Brian at the front desk provided great dining recommendations, although sadly, I never got to try any of them. (By the way, some of the reviews I read spoke poorly of the staff; my experience couldn€t have been further opposite. Everyone € and I mean everyone € was wonderful, *especially* the front desk staff.) If I lived in New Orleans, this would definitely be my vet of choice; and if I ever bring my little guy back and need care, this is the first place we will go. Thank you, Anne and staff, for providing €shelter from the storm,€ so to speak, during an already stressful trip, and terrific care. It€s much appreciated. Read Less

I want to preface this by saying the actual veterinarians and the facilities at SAF are perfectly lovely and I have no issues with them. The desk staff is another story.I took my husky here when I first adopted him; had a routine visit and was told he had a clean bill of health. I called them about six months or so after I had initially visited to inquire about something. When I called the woman on the phone informed me he had tested positive for hookworm when he was in MONTHS AGO. She claimed they tried to call me "twice" but couldn't leave a message because my voicemail was full. I find this very hard to believe since I would have seen the missed calls. Regardless, they had all my other information- email and address. They have sent me mail for other things but couldn't mail me about the results? This woman basically shamed me and made me feel like I was some irresponsible dog owner.  I asked her how I should proceed because I had given my dog medicine for tapeworm between the visit and this phone call. I wanted to get him retested to make sure he still had the hookworm; the woman refused but told me I could come in and pick up the medication for it. At this point, I was done and said I just wanted to come in and get a copy of his records which she obliged. I made an appointment at a different vet and explained the situation. He immediately stopped me and asked what kind of medicine I give my dog for heartworm. I give him heartguard plus which come to find out treats and prevents hookworm! The other vet had prescribed this medication to me so basically this woman on the phone had worked me up into a panic over something her office had already prescribed to treat the problem at hand and to top it all off she wanted me to give him meds he no longer even needed. Unacceptable and will not return here which is a shame since I do like the veterinarians. Read Less

This is a tag team of worst rescue organization person "Monique" from Take Paws Rescue and Cruella DaVille at the front desk.  I could write a book about these people but just take it from me, the vets are lovely but the bully at the front desk and the prima donna who is too busy primping and fluffing to rescue any animal are a "chore" at best.  Steer clear of both!  Incidentally, "Monique" from "Take Paws Rescue" sent two women to confiscate the dog in my care because I derided her about wasting my time consistently and the poor condition of the dog's health in her care.  I was warned by two women who showed up unannounced at my door that if I spoke poorly of the organization they would take the dog away.  Nothing like Nazi dog rescue! My experience with this clinic was extremely negative. But I want to make sure to acknowledge that the negativity was NOT related to my interactions with Dr. Lamarsh DVM or Stevie the Vet Tech. They could not have been any more pleasant with me and my rescue dog Oskar. I called and made an appointment to schedule Oskar to be neutered. I made an appointment for March 24th at 5 pm. Brian (receptionist) reminded me to leave home in plenty of time due to the traffic in the area of the clinic at that time of day. When I arrived at 4:50 pm I went to the window and identified myself and Oskar. Without so much as a "hello" Brian raised his voice and declared " you are late"! "Your appointment was at 4!". I replied that I was certain it was at 5 and looked in my phone calendar to confirm. I found myself being very apologetic for the confusion and even stated that we had a conversation about the 5 o'clock traffic. To which he snapped ' the traffic is bad at 4 too!". Each time speaking to me as if I were a child being chastised by a person of authority. I was then told I could still see the doctor for the pre-op appt. but "you'll have to wait". I said I would and then sat down like a good girl and waited. After my appointment with Dr. Lamarsh, I went to check out and was informed by Brian that Oskar would require a microchip as part of his procedure. I told him he was already chipped to which he replied " well, we'll check for it, if we can't find it you'll have to pay for another one". He proceeded to grab a scanner from a basket nearby and run it over Oskar's back. He quickly threw the scanner on the counter stating "well this one doesn't work". Grabbed another, passed it over and said " this one doesn't work either!". "Maybe we can find something here that works." At that time as he was scanning (the third one worked), the owner Ms. Anne came over and retrieved the scanners he had tossed. He quickly yelled at her "THEY DON'T WORK!". She replied something quietly about how to scan and he replied "I know what I'm doing!". "I don't need you to tell me how the damn machine works Ms. Anne, I'm not stupid". Needless to say, I was completely over it by this point. I never seen such unprofessional behavior. I just wanted out of there. Their interaction with me, and each other was very upsetting. The kicker was that later that evening I was checking some voice mails left on my cell phone while I was at work. Low and behold, there was a message from someone at SAF! No name given of course, asking if I could come at 4 instead of 5 for my appointment as the doctor was double booked at 5! The caller asked that I call back and please confirm that I could come at the earlier time. I did not hear the message before my appt. I was correct in my time. THEY changed the time without confirmation and then fussed at me for being LATE! I called back and cancelled Oskar's surgery. The person who answered the phone (no name) took the message and said "ok its cancelled" and that was it. She never inquired as to why. I give one star for the vet. Other than that, STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE! I understand everyone who works there is related to the owner. That is no reason to allow people to be treated in this manner. The website looks great and they do provide reduced rate care. Great goals. But the only pics are of Magazine Street. Nothing of the facilities, kennels. I know I made the right decision. I will not take an animal there. Ever. Read Less

This is a noble organization, and they have saved a lot of lives.  The vets and vet techs are absolutely wonderful.  If you decide to adopt from them, they will always help you.  Additionally, you will not find lower prices for such good care anywhere else in town. The entire staff is very devoted to what they do. On a good day, and with extreme politeness on your part, you can expect a good experience from all staff. However, in general, do not expect that much patience or kindness from reception.  Perhaps there is a reason they work with animals, because they are VERY easily frustrated with people.  I've been offended and humiliated several times when asking questions they obviously deem stupid. This is disappointing, because they are constantly advocating for people to donate to their cause, and/or foster and adopt their rescues.  They seem to forget what an undertaking this can be, especially when rescues have been traumatized or are ill.  A little more compassion for the people taking on these tasks would be nice, even if those people are legitimately annoying.  The average person just doesn't have their extensive knowledge and experience .All this being said, my animal is always well taken care of, and therefore I keep going back.  I'm not paying them to be my caretakers or doctors, and I do my best to rise above. Don't take it personally if they are rude to you.  It is a hectic environment, and they are probably over-worked and underpaid.  You can feel good about sending your pets here. Read Less

Couple days ago I sent an email to this organization asking about Pierre and to get more info on him. I recieved a response that only stated, "have you filled out an application yet". I responded that I just wanted info on his condition before I did. Never heard back. I just called about a an adoptable pet that I wanted information about since he was heartworm positive. when they answered I said I was calling about Pierre (the adoptable dog). All the guy that answered was gotta give me more than that...being in the customer service business this is not a good first impression. I see why he didnt give his name. When he transfered me to the correct department after several minutes a woman answered. Very stern as well. When I said I was calling about Pierre her response was "yup". I explained that I wanted some info on his condition since I had another dog at home as well. The next response was "well he has a pending application so will probably be gone after the holidays anyways". Then hung up. Wow. Sorry I bothered them. She didnt even bother to try and get my contact info incase the adoption fell through. Or at least for a possible different dog they may have. Not really sure if they are even trying to find homes for their animals...not to mention my heart goes out to the animals if the staff treats them the same way they treat adoptave parents. I will find another agency to work with. Read Less

The rudeness, unprofessionalism (i.e. not listening, talking over me, wrong assumption of my inquiry) of the owner/director was unconscionable. She refused us access to a public cat rescue, hoarding the information...wielding power? We were treated more like criminals than people who just wanted first dibs in the adoption process for a cat that we'd been taking care of (and brought to them for spaying and shots). I am gravely disappointed. Reconsider this clinic. There is a foulness in the air (and I do not mean the animals).(Incidentally, I rarely take the time to comment on mediocre customer service. But this was so bad I felt a democratic responsibility to report it. While I cannot comment on the animal care, the human care I can attest to: rotten). Read Less

I've been going to SAF for several years and love everyone there. I've called Deanna during off hours for advice and she always gives it with a smile, even though it may be a rare day off for her. I've been able to spay and neuter several strays because they offered low cost services to our ferals because they care about the animals of New Orleans. They always fit me in when I have an "emergency" even if it's something as simple as an ear infection (I may be an overprotective parent). I love SAF because of the passion they exhibit for helping all of our animals and the kindness they offer all the pet parents. Thanks for being wonderful! Read Less

The fine people at SAF have cared for my pets for many years, got me through cancer treatments and surgeries for my elderly cat, and when nothing more could be done, took care of the cremation for me. They found the perfect little fella for me to adopt when my heart was ready for a new furbaby. Everyone here's so committed to saving animals, finding the right home, making them comfortable when the end is near, and caring for the pets no one wants and saving them from neglectful situations. If I could give them a 50 star review, I would. I love these guys, and my very happy, healthy, well cared for kitties will always be taken there for every pet need. I love my fur babies, and I want their care provided by people who understand how much I love them...that's why I bring them to Southern Animal foundation. They are great people who do great things at reasonable prices. Have you priced other vets in this city? Don't get me started! They not only care for private fur babies, they also run a low cost spay/neuter program, trap and release program, and a rescue to save cats/dogs from kill shelters in Louisiana. Of my four dogs and two cats, three dogs and 1 cat were rescued by Southern Animal and adopted by moi! I read reviews by people who bitch about attitude and customer service in general, but you know what, these are busy people who do good work, and I have personally never had an issue, so I can't comment. I know all of these people give a lot of their personal time to help these animals and I appreciate that. Read Less

I was actually referred to SAF by another veternarian when my dog needed immediate medical attention. Well on my first visit to SAF, I was greeted by a receptionist that was less than friendly and seemed to have no recollection of the appointment I placed with them the day before (btw, she was also the same person that was supposed to have scheduled the appointment for me). I brushed this off and was finally able to see a Dr. Corr (forgive me if I misspelled her name) who was very kind and helpful, to the point where she was willing to come in the following day, which was a Saturday and happened to be her day off, to perform an emergency surgery on my dog since we discovered there was a life threatening blockage in his intestine. When we attempted to confirm the appointment, the less than kind receptionist mentioned earlier seemed to care less about saving my dog's life and more about leaving work that day, and told me I'd have to come back Monday to schedule the surgery for the middle of the following week, knowing my dog wouldn't have made it that long! When the director of SAF overheard the conversation, she immediately went above and beyond to make sure staff would be available the following day in order to perform the surgery, which I believe saved my dog's life.I've gone back several times since, and have had pleasant experiences with all the staff there, and would recommend this facility to any and every pet owner I come across. The key here is not to let the actions of a few ruin the reputation of an entire body of people that are truly concerned about the well being of your pets. Outside of the receptionist from my initial visit, all the staff members seem extremely genuine when it comes to caring for your four-legged family members! Read Less

However the reception desk  is TERRIBLE. I called to get an update on my animal, and the lady was nasty from the moment she picked up the phone. At the end of her rant, I told her good customer service would help when dealing with an animal owner, and she promptly told me "it's great customer service for what your paying for" and told me not to come back before hanging up. COMPLETELY HORRIBLE, MISERABLE, UNPROFESSIONAL experience with SAF. I went in and paid to have my cat spayed and things seemed fine. Well a month later she became pregnant again. Wow, how does that happen? Well they seemed to tell me that my cat had "TWO UTERUSES". Well ok my cat seems to be a "Freak of Nature". At this point I am in college and working hard to pay for anything and I had 4 kittens running around my apt. tearing it up when I thought I had my cat SPAYED. I spoke to the owner who is a very UNPROFESSIONAL, RUDE WOMAN who proceded to explain to me that I had to pay for the spaying of my cat again and it was my responsibility to find a good home for my 4 new kittens. At this point I look to my right and see a cage with 4 cute kittens in it with a sign saying "ADOPT FREE KITTENS". I tried really hard to contain myself and asked another rude woman working at the front window with the owner listening on, "How could I possibly manage to get my new kittens in that cage to be adopted? "Well sir", they said, "Those kittens are sick and we cannot add any new kittens in the cage with them." GREAT, I have to pay again for her to be spayed, which I would have thought the VET WOULD HAVE NOTICED IN SURGERY THAT MY FREAKING CAT HAD TWO UTERUSES, "REALLY". Well as I was asking, the very rough looking female clerk who seemed to act like I was completely wrong and wanted to have a physical confrontation with me. "Can I pay in installments? I really don't have the money to pay for this all at once? At this point I am very angry and am not sure what to do, so I say trying hard to stay calm. "I'm sorry Miss I just saw your previous customer talking about paying a portion of his bill to you today and he would pay the remainder of his bill later." She says aggressively, "Well sir he is an old customer and we used to allow that but don't any longer" It really takes me alot to get angry and this ANGERED ME, so I walked out and never returned. Dear viewer, I recently moved to New Orleans in late July so as a pet owner I had trials and errors trying to figure out which animal hospital might provide MORE than adequate care. For me it isn't about the $cost of services but about the education and the sincere care my dog should be entitled to receive. At the time I had one gorgeous Caucasian Ovtcharka and one maine coon cat. They had been in contact with flees from the courtyard of this fancy overly priced place I rent from. I had given them the normal dosage of anti flee preventatives but it did not work properly and I brought my mountain dog in to see the doctor so he in a very firm and strict voice encouraged me to hire an exterminator to spray all areas of this home and let the pets stay at that facility till the toxic spraying should go away. After this advice one month later my dog had deteriorated even more , same skin condition and he was biting holes in his fur and losing weight even though I fed him four large bowls per day and my own dinners as well. The doctor prescribed the same ritual, encouraged me to use more sprays (thank GOD I didn't) and asked me rather accusingly why my dog was losing so much weight. He told me to double his intake of food and sent us on our way, On Mardis Gras my dog's gums turned all white and most of the vets were closing so I had to take him to an emergency vet clinic and three days later he was given hemoglobin transfusions, After a second transfusion at another clinic he died and his cancer had been undiagnosed by this clinic. People please if you deeply love your pet do not go through these doors! My dog was only five and I received a postcard in the mail reminding me to take my dog here for his shots?? I called this hospital up very calmly and explained they need not send more reminders since my dog had died of cancer three weeks ago, This clinic had been contacted by Meterie animal hospital when he was being given transfusions yet this clinic never called me to see if Troika was okay? The technician who answered the phone today was cold, uncaring, unsympathetic and DEFENSIVE, SHE SAID oh you brought this dog in for a skin condition. I told her how much Dr. Lamarsh pointedly asked me why my dog was losing weight. I told her to call Metarie Small animal hospital if she wanted to inquire about what happened to my dog but no she was cold, superior and unapologetic. I had received sympathy cards from the staff of Metarie Small Animal Hospital and from Canine Connection where my dog enjoyed boarding stays but this staff here???? NOTHING!!!! People they don't care about animals here. I saw positive feedback and reviews that just don't match the poor treatment my beautiful dog received. My heart is broken and as an animal lover do not go here if your pet is seriously ill or shows signs of losing weight. In fact when I googled anorexia in dogs that is the very first sign of cancer, Please know I write this review deeply depressed that I had this problem with this clinic. Cancer is lethal when it is not caught on time and this clinic saw my beautiful dog four times in two months! They just wanted money --they did not care to see this dog get better or suggest testing to check for the most obvious disease. Since I am not a vet I truly did not know the signs but a vet should know what to look out for and what tests to run if they had had proper schooling or if they truly cared. Read Less

I took my eight-year-old Corgi here for the first time today. I had a good experience overall. We didn't have to wait too long to be seen. The have a separate entrance for dogs and cats, which I think is *genius*. Dr. Lamarsh really impressed me. He is obviously very smart and handled my baby very well. He had to give her a shot and clip her nails, neither of which she enjoys, but he was a pro. He asked a lot of questions about her eating, drinking, eliminating, etc., and really seemed to care about my dog. The tech was also very nice and helped put my dog at ease. I've never been financially responsible for another animal so I'm not exactly sure how SAF compares price-wise. It was $25 for the visit, then $25 for the heartworm test, and another $70 for six months of heartworm prevention which all sounded about right. $8.50 for nail trim is a bargain compared to what we go through trying to do it at home! We had to get a couple more meds for a skin allergy that she has developed, and after price-checking on the internet it looks like the prices were marked up a little bit but not a ton. To me that's worth the hassle of going to a pharmacy or trying to order online. The invoice very clearly explained all the charges, and also had reminders on when she needs her next shots and such. Also the directions on the medications were written out very clearly and the vet tech went over them with me. Read Less

Read Less

We brought our furry little ones to SAF while in NOLA, and she always took the time to address all of our questions and concerns, which were usually listed out on a long piece of paper so we wouldn't forget.

Read Less

I have been using the clinic for 3 years with amazing service. I'm not sure how I managed to avoid the front desk for so long. The vets are amazing, and go out of the way to help you. I absolutely LOVE the vets. But I will not be going back anytime soon. My hope is some of them change practices! Read Less

DONOT EVER TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS HORRIBLE VET!!!!!!!!! Read Less

I have been taking my pet to SAF for the last five years. The service hasn't been the best but I thought they were cheapest in the Uptown area. I usually arrive 10-15 minutes before my appointment time but didn't today because there is usually a wait to be seen anyways. However, today I had an appointment for 4:30 and checked in at 4:28 and was still waiting an hour after. When I asked if they had forgotten about me I was told I was skipped for the 3:30 appointment because I was late which did not even make sense and I wasn't late. I walked out and will never go back. They shouldn't over book if they cannot handle the business. I'd rather drive out of my way for better prices and a better business. Read Less

SAF was recommend to me by friends who couldn't believe how inexpensive they were and I've now recommended it to other people who are as impressed as I am. I've been to both of the vets who are excellent. The staff was very polite (I got to witness their handling of a local nut who accused them of being liars because they're supposed to be non-profit). No, they're not free, Mr. Degenerate New Orleans Cretin, but they are non-profit and they are the cheapest clinic in town. Now that I'm in New Jersey I'm having a hard time finding anything close to that level of animal care at the prices they offer. Consider yourselves lucky, New Orleans. Read Less

I brought my kitten to get her taken care of and after they told me that it will cost me $109.00 which I PAID right then and there, they told me to come back at 12 noon to pick her up. I showed up at noon and the lady at the front desk (Ann) told me I could not have my kitten back. She then told me that she didn't think I took care of my cat. That's why I brought her to a SECOND vet in the first place. I told her I wanted my cat back and she called the police and then FORCED me to sign my baby over. I probably feed every cat in the Uptown area out of my pocket and out the kindness of my heart....Now why would I NOT take care of MY kitten and I take care of everyone elses???? I'm very unhappy with this place and I don't think anyone should have their ""child"" taken away. Those people are so rude and heartless!! I can not sleep now, wondering what is going to happen to my kitten. John. If anyone can suggest any help or ideas please feel free to comment. Read Less

I would not take my pet anywhere else for health care. Both doctors and office staff are the most caring, knowledgable, and friendly I have experienced during the 6 years of my pet's life. I would trust NO ONE else with my dog. I have complete trust and faith in these people and have had no experience to make me feel otherwise. I can tell that caring for animals is not just a job for this staff, but a true commitment. Read Less

Read Less
