This Animal hospital may not have the fanciest accommodations but the Vet care by Dr. Smith and the staff is amazing. if you have an ill or old animal he is honest about options. The prices are very reasonable including annual shots and check up - I have never felt like I was being taken advantage because my dog needed care unlike other places in the area. Good honest place we've taken our cats and dogs to for the last 10+ years. Dr. Smith is a straight shooter, honest, and won't sell you a service unless it's going to do actual good for your pet. He also has a good bedside manner for those painful decisions all pet owners have to make. We were referred by a family member and I had high hopes for this place but it didn't work out. We rescued a pit bull with severe anxiety and can't calm down when new dogs are in close proximity and the fact that the waiting room is as small as my closet, was not a good start. We had to wait outside in February to calm our dog down because of the barking and unfriendly smells right when you walk in. There should be an empty room available for this sort of thing. Sorry but not all dogs are perfect. Most aren't. Also, our trainer recommended we put our dog on anti-anxiety meds because he was having a really hard time adjusting and being left alone. Dr. Smith was so rude and almost refused to give us the medication. He shamed us for trying to help our dog and said unless he is eating the furniture, no animal should be put on medication, instead of kindly offering his option, he was very rude. Also, the receptionist needs an attitude check as she is very rude and unpleasant and needs to get accustomed to technology. I shouldn't have to wait a month for you to get all our pets documents to the new vets office.  It was a very unpleasant experience. I can't say enough good things about Dr Smith and the staff at the Beltway. Veterinary medicine is something I take extremely seriously being a dog trainer and I have been going to Beltway for almost 13 years now. We recently dealt with a very difficult process with our dog before having to decide to put him down. Dr Smith went above and beyond what he needed to do and attempted to do everything he could as well as consult outside vets in case there was something he may be missing. Beltway Animal Hospital flat out cares for both the animals coming in and the owners who are concerned for their family pet.  I have been using BAH for years and they are great Vets who are focused on positive outcomes every time.  They do not give you fluff (not your dog).  They provide honesty with what is happening, not what you want to hear.  They have saved my dog, Elvis on 2 separate occasions, and for that I am forever greatful.  I highly recommend their service. I've been using Beltway for many years.. yes the facilities are a little outdated but the care is top-notch. Some of the other local animal hospitals are extremely fancy and high tech (like much nicer than my doctors office) and they charge accordingly I go past several other closer hospitals to take my dogs to beltway. Dr. Smith ( my favorite Dr. at Beltway) always takes the time to explain things without "beating 'round the bush". Best prices around as well. Many times 1/3rd the cost of others. Highly recommend. Update 2: Hachi healed perfectly and is 100% back to normal. Update: Hachi's stitches came out and his incision looks like it is healing really, really well. So glad I found this place!!Great value and experience!  I have received great service and thorough care for my dog who got surgery to remove a foreign object there 2 weeks ago. I was incredibly nervous but the vet was great about following up with me and letting me know what to expect next.  He always kept me in the loop and answered one of my questions over the phone about a week post surgery without seeming rushed to hang up asap because he was too busy for me. My dog is doing great and he gets his stitches out in 3 days! I am so relieved I found this place, as they were great and I could not fathom paying the amount the pet ER right around the corner quoted me. Waiting room is no-frills, dated, and appointments are done by hand, but they seem to be able to save their customers money because of it. Had to take my dogs sister, who is 6 months younger there because I was watching her. She looked horrible. The vet there Dr Smith just kept saying she had a skin condition. Yes agree with that, but there is definitely something else going on. She harding has any hair. She looks like a Chinese Crested dog and she is part yorkie and part schaunzer. The techs and the vet were rude! I would not recommend them to my worse enemy! The techs there did not even know how to put on frontline on another dog. I had to tell them. Again, they are rude and unprofessional. The Dr is a quack. So, if you take your animals there, I would spend my money at a different place. I take both of my dogs to Celebree vet. in Kingsville! I can't rave about how great my experience at beltway vets was!! I can give you the only comparison I know which was belvedere vets who quoted me $400 to get my male dog fixed, beltway is charging me $150. Also belvedere said he needed all shots "updated" from last year which Dr. Kevin said wasn't necessary. Couldn't be happier to save some money. The building and waiting area is depressing and smells like bleach.  I understand they need to clean with bleach but the last time I was there, I waited to get my dog's medications and felt sick to my stomach because I was so overhwlemed by the scent.  However, the care my labrador has received there has been excellent and a lot cheaper than other vets.  My dog was attacked on a weekend and Pet ER gave her stitches with instructions to follow up at our regular vet.  The doctor at Beltway took them out for free.  They are often able to fit us in very quickly.  If you can get past the sad/no frills waiting area, it's a good place for pets. The place looks pretty old and eh so I don't know if I would make it my regular vet, but the experience I had was great.My cat got sick from medicine from the Pet ER.  I took my cat there a few a times until Dr. Kevin decided to keep him over night.4 injections and an over night stay was only $100... that's it.  Ralph is better now and I am so thankful.Will say their Friday vet did not seem like an animal person at all and I would only ever go back if Dr. Kevin Smith was the one seeing my animal. I was referred here by a friend when my pit mix was showing symptoms of a bowel obstruction. We were not existing clients, but they were able to squeeze me in that morning without an appointment when I told them what was going on. The visit was efficient, friendly, professional and much less expensive than I had been anticipating. Its a small place, no frills; but I really liked the vet. They could have easily taken advantage of my situation as I would have paid anything to feel better about what was going on. They treated my pup with a minimalist/least invasive approach and sent me on my way with some great advice and follow-up instructions. I will be bringing my pets here from now on. Read Less

The staff is alright but the vets are terrible. Very rude and unfriendly (which seemed to get worse as the years went on). We used to bring our dog here for many years, mostly because it was one of the few options in our area. Sadly, our dog passed away. We had Beltway Animal cremate her so yes, they knew that she passed away. Yet a few months later, we received a yearly check-up reminder to bring her in. First and foremost, doctor Kevin Smith is great. Just great. The only reason why I am giving Beltway Animal Hospital three stars is just that their building/waiting room/everything inside and outside is so damn depressing, dark (sub-basement type rooms), too close to the busy street. Yes, it is affordable and the doctor is great, but this place gives me creeps. It smells like chlorine way too much, I can understand that some dogs and cats freak out there. Waiting room is very small. Making appointments is very easy though. Doctor Smith also gives advise by the phone as well, it is not just that "bring him in" kind of relationship. No. I just wish the building/rooms were more cheery and bright. Once I saw a woman who brought her dog to be put to sleep, I wish they could see her in the morning, before everyone else started rushing in with their pets, that poor woman sat on the bench, trying to hide her tears, then choking every time she saw some puppies/dogs coming in, I really felt for her and though that it is inappropriate for the animal clinic/vet to schedule her in the middle of the day. That was so sad. Her dog was 14 years old or so, could not walk and she had to hold her on her lap, trying to be strong, but she obviously could not. And not even a single Kleenex was offered. This place is "no thrills" in a very small location, no computer, and doctors who don't dress like doctors.  But they wait time is very short and they don't act like used car salesmen trying to up-sell you with unnecessary tests, overnight observation, etc. like many other veterinarians.  Reasonably priced and trustworthy. Very reasonably priced care for our pets.  They saved our dog's lives multiple times.  My elderly Pekingese had total body sepsis and almost died several years ago and they saved his life.  My hairless crested had multiple strokes recently and they treated her for only $90 and she recovered.  Follow up care is often free.  Dr. Smith and Dr. Shortall are exceptional vets.  My cat is allergic to almost all foods, but is thriving at 15 years old. We've been taking our animals here for the last 12 years.  Excellent, excellent care for our little ones. (2 cats, 2 dogs).  Our little hairless crested we adopted came to us with breast cancer (we had no idea)- they fixed her right up, hysterectomy and everything, for about 300 bucks, 12 years ago- she's still going strong!! Our Pekinese had a full body sepsis infection- the skin of his head fell off!!- they cured him right up, about 3 years ago, very reasonable pricing, and he's been in great shape, completely healed. And we make sure we do all of our routine appts. They can be a little brusque, staff isn't always smiley; but they really care about animals, have always treated us well, prices are always incredible, and our little family members do very well by them! Have had all my animals cared for for 15 years....was very happy for a long time.  The last few years have been really unsatisfactory.  Was sold overpriced meds without trying or offering alternatives for a dog with arthritis. Staff has turned over and the newcomers are less helpful and friendly. No one looks like they enjoy being there anymore.  Dr Smith is still cheerful and compassionate but his partner Dr. Shortall has become brusque and short.  I haven't enjoyed interactions with him for some time and go out of my way to avoid appts with him.This week I brought my cat in for shots and to check out some suspected cystitis. Was asked to keep cat overnight to obtain urine sample.  Was asked to call back at 11am the next day to find out results.When I called the next morning, was told that surgery went well and that the cat was ready to be picked up ! (?).. The cat had been in a scuffle earlier that week and the small cut has been looked at and dismissed by the vet the day before.I went to pick up cat and was upset about unauthorized procedures. Was told by Dr Shortall that any 'good' owner would fix the cat's cut and that the  charges were the charges and I needed to pay. $150 extra for anesthesia and 1 suture.I won't be back and have lined up another vet to take out THE suture. I unfortunately had to take my cat here to be euthanized. Having worked in veterinary medicine in the past, I know how certain things should be done, and when they are being done the wrong way. Everything about this visit was WRONG. During what was already a difficult time for me, the staff was uncaring and rude. Upon entering the exam room with my cat, the Dr did not even bother to introduce himself to me. I explained to the staff that my kitty could be difficult to handle at the vet and requested that they give him an injection of a sedative prior to attempting to handle him. They did not listen to me, let alone even acknowledge the fact that I had even said anything. They ended up choking my cat with a no slip leash that is meant for use in dogs while trying to restrain him, which is not the right way to restrain a cat, and if you ask me, it is bordering on cruelty. I was completely horrified and shocked at this point. My cat, while being handled at the vet is always very vocal and loud, and he could not even get any sounds out of his mouth due to the technician having the leash so tight around his neck. After the Dr put my cat to sleep, I got no condolences from him. He simply stated without feeling that he was gone, and then left the room. I really have no idea why this man is a veterinarian. If him and his staff will handle and treat a pet this way in front of an owner, I hate to think how they treat pets that are dropped off at the clinic and entrusted to their CARE, if you can call it that. I had taken my cats to 2 other vets in the area and was very unhappy with the service and pricing. A friend recommended me to Beltway and the doctors there were able to treat my cat's eye condition that both of the other vets left untreated. Dr. Smith and Dr. Shortall are the best. My labrador retriever LOVES going to see them. They are quick, friendly, compassionate, and know their stuff. My dog has epilepsy, and he's had his fair share of visits to Beltway Animal Hospital. The staff is completely professional and friendly, and the services are very affordable - 6 months of meds for my dog's condition costs me only $5. My dog is my child, and I wouldn't trust him to just anybody. I'm so thankful to have found such wonderful care for him! Read Less
