My pup was misdiagnosed at another nearby vet. I took her here because she went downhill quickly and we needed help immediately. Unfortunately our baby had an insidious form of heart cancer. We had B for 14 years and she was our child. So we were incredibly heart broken. Our Dr here was entirely empathetic and warm. She gave us all our options and was honest with realistic expectations of treatment. As we knew she was too old and in too much pain for another surgery, we euthanized her. Our vet made sure we felt supported and made the experience as good as it could be given the circumstances. I am so incredibly grateful for her care and patience with us. Thank you so much. Read Less

I was there. Staff was friendly. I know there is an emergency fee, but why is the bandaging fee $50 and it came off twice? I know cats are finicky and mine is a one year old and he is hectic so he makes them come off! I would have not went back twice for a bandage. He is still bleeding and limping on his left paw. I now know I should leave his cuts alone since he basically cleans himself. Even if I clean it and apply pressure it bleeds again. In 2018- Amazing service, and very considerate with attention and updates. Our 13 year old Weim was having breathing difficulties and they immediately provided oxygen. The staff was very attentive and the care was again, outstanding.
IN 2015 -The staff and doctors are wonderful at Dogs and Cats. Last year I brought in our 16 1/2 yr old Dachshund who had a nosebleed that wouldn't stop. They saw me immediately, and the doctor conferred with me about the situation. - This year, at 7:30pm on a SUNDAY night, our other dachshund had ruptured disk, and we brought him in immediately. The vet techs told us what needed to happen and the faster, the better- meaning he would have a better chance of recovery (which is 100% true). *They took time to explain things, and answer all questions. They called in the surgeon and by 11:30pm the surgeon operated on our dog (calling me an hour before to explain everything). He called again at 1:30am after the surgery to update us. - The surgeon also called EVERY morning to provide an update. ***OUTSTANDING SERVICE*** I've never received such great service from a vet hospital and we've had dogs for a decade. The staff is always cheerful and helpful and the wait is always short. The reception folks, the vet techs and the doctors are amazing. Our dog is recovering, thanks to their care and instruction. Completely stellar. My wonderful cat was diagnosed with GI lyphoma, and while in the end the complication he developed meant we could not get him into remission and had to let him go, I can tell you quite honestly I never worried about him for one second while he was in their care. He had weekly chemo treatments and each time there was a check-in on paper and with a tech, as well as a discharge meeting when I picked him up. Everything was explained in detail verbally and in writing. I could email or call anyone on his team and heard back quickly. I was always talking to the same people who not only knew his "case" but really cared about him. They were also mindful of the expense of procedures and we had very good conversations about the risk/benefit of every single procedure. These people are the best around. Read Less

I met some very caring people here but their main goal is to run the bill up on vulnerable and distraught clients. I would never bring another pet here and have informed family, friends, neighbors and colleagues of my experience.I brought my dog here because it was late in the day and my vet said he needed to be on an IV drip due to a high fever. This ER was closer with less traffic than the one in Annapolis on Bestgate Road. Big mistake! What started as something seemingly easy, ended up with a four day stay costing $8000. The surgeon said the ultrasound showed a mass on my dogs spleen that should be removed . Of course, I had to have $5000 in my account before he would do the surgery and gave me two hours because he and/or his assistants would be leaving. I felt pressured to take care of my dog. All they seemed to care about is the money!!!!!! I picked up my dog two days after surgery on a Sunday and my nightmare continued . At discharge, I had a vet tech that was supposed to be going over directions to care for my dog at home and how to force feed my dog through a tube using a syringe. She was more interested in talking about how tired she was because they were understaffed and she had had a busy day. Our discharge was cut short because of the understaffing so I went home and had to search on my iPad for a video to learn how to force feed my dog. Again, I felt like they didn't care about my dog and his comfort but had $8000. Lo and behold, it could get worse. I found out that the mass that was removed was cancerous and the surgeon was not proactive to keep my dog on pain medicine. I finally took my dog to my regular vet of 20 years and he said my dog was suffering, in pain, the biopsy report was horrible, and highly recommended my dog should be euthanized right then. My vet was visibly disturbed about the condition my dog was left in.I wrote a review on Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral which got a response that a manager would contact me about my concerns. Talking with a manager was useless as she made nothing but excuses for the surgeon and the discharging vet tech. After spending $8000, I ended up with my dog suffering and dying and being totally disrespected by the manager. There was no compassion. All they wanted to do is run up the bill. I never had a chance to go to the follow up appointment with the surgeon because my dog was dead. The surgeon had wanted to talk with me about chemo and an MRI. Just another way to run up the bill another couple of thousand dollars Read Less

It really is about your surgeon and not the establishment overall, but some people may get a little turned off with regards to price. I felt my surgeon did a fine job explaining the issues plaguing my little friend, but when it came to cost, I was a little confused. I was also concerned for his age (my chi is 14 years old). In a nutshell-dog had perianal gland tumours which then turned into he also has hernias, which also turned into-he needs to be neutered because his testosterone levels effect the outcome. My surgeon aborted on one side because his pressure went low. I am glad they did it, but the refund issue concerned me. They itemized the pricing, but when aborting the hernia repair on one side, the numbers didn't really jive on the refund. I am glad my dog is alive and well and made a very good recovery, so it was nothing major to me, but I felt I should mention it-so you would not be surprised. Additionally-if something happens to your animal mid-surgery, to resuscitate is an extra $1k+. I thought that would be included, but not so. I told them DNR because I cant tell what would happen either way. Obviously, there's no object on how much you love your pet. Read Less

On Saturday night, my husband and I were alarmed when he found what he thought was a worm sticking out of our little Beagle's back. Not wanting to wait for the next morning for Banfield Hospital to open, we decided to take Pebbles to this facility. We had been here once before a while back and they took really good care of her.We were seen within a few minutes, someone came out and looked at it and thought it was a skin tag, but weren't sure. We were hoping that's all it was. They took her to the back and within 10 minutes, the doctor came out and said that it just looked like something that had gotten embedded on her back (she pulled it out) and didn't think it was anything to worry about since Pebbles looked otherwise healthy.I told the doctor at that time that my husband and I have officially become one of those paranoid pet parents. we were relieved that's all it was. Even though it ended up being something silly, the staff never made us feel stupid. They were very kind. They gave us the piece that they took out of her back and sent us on our way. I want to thank the whole staff for being super friendly and professional. We will not hesitate to bring our dog back here if she should need something. it turned out to be nothing this time, but better safe than sorry. Read Less

It's typically never a good time when you have to make a trip to the emergency vet. However, Dogs and Cats has made my pet emergencies a tolerable experience. I first came here years ago when my 3 month old puppy choked on some of his kibble and had to be rushed to his regular vet. They were able to save him, but he required an overnight stay to ensure that his oxygen levels were okay. Unfortunately, our regular vet does not provide overnight care, so they directed us to Dogs and Cats. After two nights in an oxygen tent (and $$$$), our baby was as good as new. He just celebrated his 4th birthday last month, and I have to give credit to his regular vet and D&C for saving his life! Last week, I decided to give my Persian cat a haircut and accidentally nicked his skin. Of course, it was past his regular vet's hours and looked like it needed emergency care. I called Dogs and Cats before arriving and they agreed that he should be seen, especially due to his age (he's 19!). The ladies at the front desk were welcoming and we were immediately taken to triage. The friendly vet assessed him and took him to the back for care.Yes, the wait was long (a few hours), but it's an EMERGENCY vet. There was another family there whose poor baby was in a tragic accident and unfortunately did not make it. Of course, that issue was more critical than a cat cut. Like I said earlier, Dogs and Cats dropped everything years ago when we brought in our puppy for his emergency oxygen treatment. They took him back right away to get him assessed and hooked up to the proper machines. Overall, I was very pleased with my experiences. By the end of the night, my phone was at less than 20% and the kind lady at the front desk (I wish I got her name!) offered me a phone charger. I was also offered coffee or water while I waited. It's the little things that make you feel like you and your pet are being taken care of! Thanks, Dogs and Cats! Read Less

My dog was diagnosed with a condition called Perinal Hernia. I was referred from a Vet that is located in Odenton. I was told that they didn't perform that type of surgery and that he should be referred to a Board Certified Vet.Which brings me to Dogs and Cats. Dr. Garnett was his attending Dr. I must say he is Excellent!! The surgery was a Success. He notified us before and after surgery. He kept us updated on his status. I have a Bishon Frise. He was able to get that e collar off his neck while l was at work and l panicked because you know the purpose of the collar is to stop them from licking. I wanted to make sure everything was still intact. So l immediately called the office and the nurse was able to get him seen immediately before the Dr. Had his scheduled surgery. He checked him over and did the proper exam and stated everything was still intact. Thank god!! He has literally in my book saved my little furry baby's life. I can't express the gratitude l have for this. The staff was also helpful including the front desk. I didn't give it five stars because one day during the weekend. I called and needed to speak with a Tech and was told by the lady at the front desk that they had an emergency. I left a message with my number and no one called me back. So l understand the emergency situation but would have appreciated the return call at some point during that day and it never happened The guy that sit at the front has been helpful as well and sorry l didn't get his name. I do know he remembered Jake when he saw him because he is a memorable one with his barking. He did state that they check out the Yelp reviews reviews. So Thank you so much!! I would definitely recommended this hospital just be prepared to pay a pretty price that you probably won't think is actually pretty. If you are able. After all it is for your pets sake. I was very impressed with the staff and service I received after taking my 7-year-old baby, Maggie, in for emergency treatment. Maggie was in a lot of pain and was obviously distressed about something which I couldn't figure out until I lifted her tail to see blood around her anal area. Since this was close to 7 pm, my typical vet was closed and I scrambled to find somewhere she could be seen as soon as possible. I found Dogs and Cat via a Google search and made a quick call to a friendly person from the clinic who told me to bring her in right away.
Not long after arriving we were seen by a Vet Tech who was very nice and told me she was pretty sure Maggie had a ruptured anal gland. Even though this is not the greatest news you want to hear, you typically fear for the worse any time you see blood coming from your beloved pet. The Dr. Schnabel came in soon after and confirmed that this was indeed a ruptured anal gland and then explained what services were required. She told me the expected wait time, which was accurate and I took Maggie back home with pain pills, antibiotics and the next day received a detailed treatments summary in my email which I could give to my regular Vet as well as add to Maggie's health records.
Overall I was extremely impressed with Dogs and Cat Veterinary Referral and Emergency. The entire staff was extremely friendly, polite and caring and not just to me, but everyone who was there, who came into the clinic and to everyone who called. I highly recommend Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral and Emergency which is open 24 hours a day 365 days a week. Thank you so much for taking care of Maggie! Read Less

I am SO impressed by the care my Chinese Crested Arlo and I received from the staff of Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral and Emergency in Bowie, MD when he was very sick and needed to have emergency surgery to remove an intestinal obstruction. Everyone on the staff was patient, friendly helpful and caring. They clearly work together for the benefit of their patients and clients. I got detailed reports from Arlo's surgeon twice daily Thursday and Friday, plus Saturday and Sunday morning. They did not omit or gloss over the not-so-good news. When Arlo was discharged today, I could see that someone had redone his topknot, which I would not have expected. His anasthesiologist, who introduced herself to me when I visited him post-surgery and spent several minutes explaining what I should expect, came up to me while I was waiting for him to be discharged today and told me Arlo "may or may not have had braids in his hair during his visit" :-) I am very impressed and deeply grateful <3Read Less

2 years ago my baby girl was attacked by another dog. We were referred here by bansfield in the Bowie petsmart. Nervous and scared to the max, we found y'all and right away our nerves got a little bit better. Everybody was completely awesome and caring! She had to have emergency surgery. But the doctor herself called with updates and after the surgery to tell us how it went and that we could bring her home! That itself impressed me! Fast forward to May 2016, the last week of May, she got really sick. My parents rushed her to y'all, and once again we received excellent care! Had to stay in ICU for 2 days then we got to bring her home. The day we brought her home, we had to rush her back again and that night we made the hardest decision ever! To send her to the rainbow bridge but everybody there was so good with her and us! Very compassionate and caring, towards us and towards princess. I can't thank y'all enough for the love and compassion y'all showed for my girl and for me & my parents in that VERY hard moment in our lives. I was always very picky about who took care of my girl and I just can't say enough good stuff! Keep up the good work!!Read Less

I was an emergency/critical care veterinary technician for a decade so perhaps my review is biased but here goes:I brought my 16 year-old cat to Dogs and Cats after he vomited a couple of times and seemed dazed. It was of course the weekend and his regular veterinarian was closed. I brought him to the clinic around 9PM. After speaking with the receptionist a tech came out to speak with me for a moment but did not lay hands on my cat. This is NOT how triage is done. There was a couple with a puppy sitting in the waiting room waiting to check out and the receptionist made a comment about how it was a slow night as I waited. I was then moved to a room. Then I waited. And waited. And my cat vomited 3 more times and seemed again very dazed and wobbly. At that time (I had been there over an hour) I went to the receptionist and asked that my cat either be taken to the back or a doctor come in soon. She said okay and seemed kind of shocked that I was still waiting at that point. Another 10 minutes later and a tech came in, took his temp (which was 98 degrees which is technically low for a cat) and told me it was normal and left the room. A doctor finally came in after I had been there over 90 minutes. Of course I understand the triage system and the most urgent come before less serious patients but 1) there was noone before me 2) the tech said that the doctors were finishing rounds when she was in the room. Rounds do not preclude looking at a 16 year old cat who has vomited over a half dozen times in 2 hours with a low temp (shock, anyone?), especially when the owner used to be a vet tech and has identified some indicators that it could be a vascular event, hypoglycemia, etc. In the end my cat was hospitalized for a few days and his regular veterinarian actually figured out what was going on with him. There is only one veterinarian that is boarded in emergency medicine (DACVECC) and most of the doctors that work in emergency have only done the 4 years of vet school and have not completed a residency in emergency. I don't know if that is why things seem kind of wonky and slow but I know that my old clinic (all were either DACVECC or residents in emergency) would have never stood for a 16 year-old to be left in a room under such symptoms. I do think it is misleading to have an emergency department with the majority of doctors not being board certified. The doctor that I ended up seeing was nice and competent but the process of getting to see her is the part with which I am most upset. The clinic also does not do military discounts which most every other specialty clinic offers (I have a dog that does pt at VOSM and a cat that sees a cardiologist at CVCA) and I find that rather odd and disappointing as well. So where do I begin. The doctors and staff at Dogs and Cats are appreciated beyond words. Our Calie Jo (Yorkie) was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea when she was 3 1/2 years old. Dr. Braz-Ruivo, and his assistant Lois saved her life by installing a stent in her throat. Within two weeks, she came down with pancreatitus and we almost lost her. She was in intensive care for nine days. Dogs and Cats pulled her through. When she was 9 years old, the other half of her trach collapsed and again Dr. Braz-Ruivo installed the second trach. For the majority of her life, Calie Jo lived a wonderful and happy life. If it were not for the doctors and staff at Dogs and Cats, that would not have been possible. For whatever reason Calie Jo had a series of health issues throughout her life and she was a real trooper/fighter. She had 3rd stage kidney failure, small cancerous mass (removed and successful), and a torn ACL. March 2015, Calie Jo went blind as a result of high blood pressure. Dogs and Cats were on board with that issue as well. Unfortunately, the beginning of April 2016 Calie Jo passed at the age of 13 1/2 years old. Her little body gave out and she couldn't fight any longer. Dogs and Cats put her to rest and were very sensitive, respectful, and loved Calie as much as we did. She is in pain no longer. There are no words to express our gratitude for the doctors and staff at Dogs and Cats. We drove a 3 hr. round trip to take our furry family there for treatment. My husband and I highly recommend their services. They are very friendly, explain everything in layman terms, and we appreciate them beyond words.... Read Less

I took my dog in for a bowel obstruction. This isn't her first time so I knew all the signs. What was great was the vet and technicians dealt with her behavior because she is very aggressive in a professional manner. Her muzzle never came off, of which I fully understand.
I left with her 2 days later. Not quite happy with a fentanyl patch on her neck because they had to shave it. Gunk from bandages still left on the edge of the fur around the shaved area. (Can't wait to bathe her) And it looks like it will be an ugly scar down her abdomen. But. She is healthy, alert, and eating well... Like nothing happened. So thank you Dogs and Cats.
There were multiple calls with follow ups which were very appreciated. I would, however, have preferred to have spoken to a vet and not a technician at checkout. Read Less

Unfortunately, I had to use Dogs & Cats to put down my 16 yr old Cocker Spaniel, Madison. Madison had Cancer that had progressed and gotten worst, we knew we were putting her down when we came in at 2am. I told the Technician that it was very important for me to have her Paw Print and she said "Ok, no Problem". Well, they never did the Paw Print, I called and they told me "sorry I can't find a paw print". I can't tell you how upsetting that was. The experience in my opinion was not good, they brought in this blanket on the floor and put her down on the floor. After grieving over her body, we asked them to come in and get her and they said "oh we will come get her". I didn't want to leave her on the floor like that and I can't believe they asked us to do that. My experience last year at Annapolis Emergency Vet, they made us very comfortable during the process and they sent me his Paw Print (which I didn't ask for, but was pleasantly surprised); also everyone at the Annapolis ER Vet, including the Doctor, signed a sympathy card and sent us the card and the Paw Print. Bottom line, I am very sad and disappointed at my experience. Read Less

Read Less

Read Less

I had to take my dog there to the internist (Dr Guma) for a consult and have moved on to oncologist (Dr Gillem); everyone there is so nice, knowledgeable, and compassionate. Yes, it's expensive, so are our Drs, which we are use to Insurance paying so don't really know what medicine costs. My dog is ok with them too, is happy when I leave him and still happy when I pick him up after chemo treatment. Everyone there, all staff are nice and try to make you comfortable. I definitely recommend this hospital if you need them. Thanks to all of you for making me and my Bear feel confident in you. Read Less

Let me tell you how awful it is to know that you need to contact an emergency vet. But, the staff at Dogs and Cats came through to save my Duchie. She required emergency eye surgery. Dogs and Cats was the closest thing open at night. The Doctor looked at Duchess first, and provided two options, both were explained in detail. The emergency surgery was done that night. The staff were great, and explained how to care for her, what to expect, and how to follow up. They were extremely helpful and offered to answer any questions at that time, and also going forward. Is it overpriced? In my opinion, for an emergency, nope. Emergencies are just that, emergencies. The hope is that they don't occur often. Despite the great care Duchess received, I hope to never return here for an emergency again, my heart can't take it! Regardless, an awful experience was made a wee bit better with their care and concern. Read Less

Many thanks to everyone who works nights, weekends and holidays, especially when our animals need help.

Read Less
