I can't put into words what this place and the vet gave me today. Hope is priceless and that's what I walked away with. My 1.5 year old baby has slipped a disc and the first vet I took her too just threw a neurologists contact info at me and that was it. This vet understood that $6+k spine surgery sometimes isn't feasible for people. She was blunt, but kind and offered several options for me and my pup. The prices are OUTSTANDING and the compassion this place has is something I wish more vets practiced. Please consider giving them your business because i know I will in the future. Oh and yes, it does smell a little bit, but it's a vet clinic. From my experience non of them smell like Bath and Body Works. This is the hardest review I've ever written, but it is bittersweet and heartfelt...I've lived in this area for a number of years and was not aware of it's existence until I brought my beloved ailing 13 year old Shihtzu, Zoe, here for her peaceful journey to Heaven. I'd been taking Zoe to another vet nearby, because that's where the breeder suggested she go and I never had any real complaints other than some costs...Sometimes costs with no solutions but I digress. The Cat and Dogs Hospital is clean, order-free, and  inviting.From the initial informational phone call until the end, the entire staff was compassionate and caring...In fact, the reason I choose to bring Zoe here was because the woman who took my call was warm and friendly; unlike some other places, to include my regular vet of 13 years. When we arrived, the staff was kind and discreet. Throughout the process, they showed concern for our well-being; offering anything they felt would provide any comfort. I recently moved to the area and trying to find a new vet was tasking. My dog is known to get UTIs quite often so I have to order her special food, prescriptions, and have to get lab work done when she isn't a feeling well. I called this place to compare prices on lab work and this place won with the cheaper prices. I am saving a ton coming here compared to 3 other places I called. In addition to the cheaper prices, the people are very nice and considerate. It's a busy place, but I hardly waited to be seen by the doctor for my dogs first vet visit. On the first visit, I could tell that they really cared about the animals and that they would treat my dog like one of their own. Which was also super important to me because that's how we were treated at my previous vet. People on here complain about the smell and wait time. I didn't have to wait long and it smelled like a place that deals with animals? Not a big deal. The prices and treatment definitely surpass that. Read Less

My husband brought my Coco here on an emergency basis after she suddenly became ill after she somehow ingested rat poison someplace in our neighborhood or the fields. The staff took her in right away and provided urgent, efficient, top-catch care and medication for her condition. Everything has been going splendidly for Coco since her visit and recovery. We brought our 10 year old cat for a checkup and were told she needs extensive dental cleaning and extraction. We returned for her surgery and things went well. Poor girl needed 18 teeth removed. We were very frightened when it came time to pay but we paid approximately $550 for major dental surgery with general anesthesia. They also shaved significant areas of matted hair. Both visits everyone from front desk to nursing were very nice.The vet personally called us before and after surgery as well as detailed post surgery care. The front area was very clean, no offensive odors anywhere! Hope our kitty won't need a lot more work done but we would return if needed. Read Less

We have 2 cats and 4 dogs and they are the only ones we trust with our fur family's care. They are always honest and offer fair pricing. More importantly, they conduct all bloodwork and vaccines in the room so that your babies aren't taken out of sight. During our time with them we have lost our dear cat Dori and are losing another one to cancer. The vets are very compassionate and caring in such a difficult time. I've been going there with my babies for more that 25 years. They worked with my first two kitties and one was a "problem" child making all her visits a major issue to say the least. But they did great with her. Then they were there for my current girls. And let's just say history repeats itself apparently. One of them has been described as having a poddy mouth, but they are as patient and great as if she hugged them. And they do, from home. These are fantastic people and I trust them totally. This place used to be good, many years ago. Now, not so much. The smell, oh wow the smell, it just assaults your senses the minute you walk inside, kind of like dirty litter boxes and wet dog. It's nauseating. The wait time is ridiculous. They do things without telling you there will be a charge or what the charge will be...surprise! The receptionist needs a serious lesson in customer service. She's rude and totally lacking any personality. The final straw was when our cat died last summer. They were treating her, they were her vet, and when I called to say she died that morning, instead of condolences the receptionist simply told me how much a cremation would be! Are you kidding? How heartless can you be? We went elsewhere to have that taken care of and that place, who never even met our cat, sent us a lovely sympathy card a few days later. Her previous vet, who she only saw one time, sent a sympathy card. I'm still waiting for some sympathy from C&D. I'm positive I'll ever get that, but I'm also positive I'll never go back there. I absolutely love this vet. I've been going there for almost 10 years and I've never had any issues. I usually ask for Dr Walters who is incredible with my animals. My dog can be difficult and Dr Walters cared for her better than any vet I've been to. And another good thing about them is they're very affordable. My only suggestion is to make appointments early or later than the middle of the day because they can be busy sometimes. I usually go around 5-6 pm and I'm in and out in 30-40 minutes, sometimes less. I will gladly recommend this place to any pet lovers.Read Less

I was also shocked at the stench of urine as I entered the facility to look at adopting a cat or kitten. The place looked fine but the overwhelming odor was unbelievable. Even though the kitten was free with the exception of spay/neuter and shots we opted to go to Petsmart. Do local animal hospital not have random inspections for health and cleanliness like restaurants or other places? We honestly changed in the garage prior to going in the house so as not to expose our two old cats to whatever we may have brought home. Read Less

I've been repeatedly disappointed by this vet. After I found tape worms in my dog's stool, I sent in a sample with a live segment in it. I told the tech on the phone, and the receptionist who took the sample that there was a live sample, and I still got a call back the next day saying that the dog was parasite free. When I challenged that and stated that I made sure a live sample was there, they gave me meds for the dog but still charged me for the test they obviously didn't bother with. I brought my cat in with urine crystals and they put him on a special diet, that of course I need to buy through them. They had either sold out of it or didn't have it in stock for weeks at a time, and when I told them I would need to research a replacement that is more readily available, they tried to scare me by telling me he would die if he didn't have this particular food that I could only get from them. The last time I took any of my pets to the vet, the vet bullied and intimidated me into giving the dog vaccinations that she didn't need. I am done giving second chances to this vet, and I'll be seeking out other options. Read Less

The Veterinarians are very nice and very good.  I've dealt with them before and been VERY pleased. So I was really disappointed at the treatment I received recently.   I literally had a young lady give me a verbal lashing because  her counterpart gave me misinformation the prior day when I called.   I called on a Friday (and actually did speak to a nice person) to arrange to pick a prescription for my dog's food  the following day.  When I arrived Saturday (after driving 90 minutes) the young lady at the front desk informed the person I spoke to Friday was wrong & there was nothing she could do for me.  She wouldn't give me a prescription for even one can of food.   Sadly I had been planning to take her in to get her teeth checked; but, decided I won't be going back after being accused of not taking care of my dog because we were due for a visit.  The dog will turn 16 this year.....so I'm thinking we've taken pretty good care of her. Took my dog in to get a growth removed. After meeting with the doctor and the vet tech I new my pup was in great hands. He is and old dog 8 years old to be exact. But after they explained all the pricing and everything it sounded great to me and they took him away for the day. When I went back in the afternoon to pick my dog up he was in pretty good spirits from just having surgery. The staff was very kind and when I saw the bill, they gave me a military discount without even asking. So not only where they great but they run a great business. I took my male cat here about a year ago to be neutered and want to say I paid roughly ~$150 for the procedure. Everything went great, he didn't seem to be in much pain afterwards and he healed quickly, which is everything I could ask for. Because my last experience was so positive I will be taking my female kitty here as well to be spayed. I think I was quoted ~$220 for the procedure and because of her age they said bloodwork was optional but would be an extra $72 if I wanted it (which I will get for peace of mind). I'll update my review after her procedure but I feel like she is going to be in good hands! Update; Got my female kitty spayed yesterday and I can't believe how well she is doing after surgery-she doesn't seem to be in any pain whatsoever! The clinic was awesome as usual. They went out of there way to email me while I was at work to let me know everything went well, even though it's more convenient for them to be able to call (I can't have my phone on me during the day though, which is why them emailing me was so nice). I had to drop her off while I was on my way into work and was in uniform-when I picked her up that evening and got my bill I saw they had applied a substantial military discount. I didn't even have to ask, they were kind enough to just throw it on there! That's when you know you've found a good place. Overall it was a great experience and I am pleased to say both of my kitties are doing well. I will definitely be bringing them back here if I ever need a vet in the future. We have loved this vet since day 1.  The staff is always very pleasant, there is no foul odor in the building, and they seem to move through appointments pretty efficiently (not rushing people through to make money like some clinics, but rather being conscious of your time, and getting your pet cared for in a timely manner).Our first visit was for our puppies, but  they only had 1 appointment available.  They went ahead and saw both puppies for us, and didn't even hesitate to take both puppies in for exams when we arrived.  They treated one of the puppies for skin mites, and didn't try to overcharge us.  They told us that we could get the meds cheaper elsewhere, and even recommended a few places! That was very much appreciated, because they could have destroyed our wallets.We also had the unfortunate event of having to put our old German Shepherd girl to sleep.  Easily one of the address days of our lives. The front desk lady, the tech, and the vet were all super caring, and genuinely understood that this was difficult for us.  They gave us as much time as we needed in the room, and made sure our girl was comfortable through the end.When our puppy was spayed, the did keep her overnight, which is their standard procedure; which we appreciated, because it meant she was under observation for that much longer.Every experience we have had here, regardless of the vet, tech, etc., has been very positive. We will continue to use them for as long as we live in the area... And maybe after, because we have enjoyed this place just that much. Read Less

I used to love this vet practice, have formerly been coming here for over 10 years, and I've recently switched to another vet. The wait have gotten longer and longer here and the office just keeps getting dirtier and dirtier. Coming in first thing in the morning, it smells terrible, the floor is disgusting, and they've just opened the doors for the day! As an added bonus, the prices have been increasing significantly every year and you're lucky if the vets fully explain what they're going to do and charge. I'm done. Such high quality service, would definitely recommend! My dog had been chocking/hacking away and I called them right before they were closing to ask if I needed to take her in to an emergency clinic. The receptionist listened to all the signs and symptoms my dog was experiencing and explained all the possibilities, putting my mind at ease for the night. I shopped around the next day and found that they have the cheapest prices coupled with the best reviews in Columbia: they were very transparent about their costs and how they can accrue. I took my puppy in for an appointment and the staff were all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I waited less than ten minutes to go in for my appointment, my puppy was diagnosed with kennel cough, and I think the entire staff cycled through the room to swoon over and love on my puppy. Dr. Wolff stayed and answered all of my questions, helped me come up with a game plan for vaccinating and getting all of her routine care performed, and the receptionist made sure to schedule me with Dr. Wolff for my next visit in two weeks for continuity of care. Used to take my cat there, I never had any real problems with the staff at the regular visits, they were very nice. I eventually got my cat spayed there and they gave her very weird looking sutures and they pretty much made what looked like a pocket that would very easily harbor bacteria/dirt/etc. During the recovery time I never once saw my cat licking or bothering her stitches and neither did my family members (if we did we would've bought an e-collar ASAP). After maybe about a week her stitches starting looking red and irritated and like they could be infected. So I contact the vet and we went and saw them. I told the technician that I was concerned with how the stitches looked and that I had never seen them done that way before and that I had never seen my cat messing with them. I wasn't even taken into a room, just left in a lobby and they whisked my cat away from me and into the back room where they have her an antibiotic shot. When the technician came back out she was incredibly rude to me and more or less said that I was lying about her not bothering her stitches because there was no way I that I could watch her the whole time or at night because cats are nocturnal. If it wasn't for her rude and unprofessional tone/demeanor I probably could have overlooked it and continued to bring my pets there. Read Less

Have been taking our pets here over a decade. We found them after adopting our gal mutt & needing a vet who spayed girls (requires overnite stay at least.) Our mutt has always been a"yellow ribbon"/go slow kinda gal,but they always seem glad to see her,and treat her (& us) with warmth & respect.  She is terribly allergic, having worse skin flare ups every year; but they always manage to find something that helps our little B. We won't kennel her anywhere else, they treat her like the queen she is! I've been going to C&D since the 80s when they were the newbie docs in Columbia. They truly care for animals while remaining affordable. I left for a while when I moved to Bethesda and learn quite quickly that all vets are not the same. Cat & Dog Hosp. hires only the best physicians which was definitely not our experience in Bethesda. My husband is in the Navy and we have moved around a lot, and so far we have been extremely lucky with finding great vets. We will definitely be adding this one to our list. The staff is super friendly and they are great with last minute appointments. The inside of the business itself has been clean every time we have gone, but my only complaint would be how it smells inside, which is why I'm giving this review only 4 stars. I understand that it's a business that deals with the care of animals, and that doesn't always smell great, but the last 3 vets we have had in 3 different states had no noticeable smell to their buildings. I'm sensitive to smell, but even my husband noticed it here. It doesn't smell like something has gone wrong, it just smells very strongly of something similar to wet dog. But considering the service we have gotten with them, (and really, good customer service and having people you trust taking care of your animals is what's most important) I am more than willing to stick with them as our vet and also recommend them to others. Been bringing our pets here for over 10 years now, and while the vets have changed once or twice, they've always taken care of everything better than anywhere else we've been. In possible emergencies, they've always helped me out by having the vet on duty call me to answer a quick question or two, which doesn'y go unnoticed and is extremely appreciated. In the 7 months they've been going here, I still haven't paid what I was forced to pay in the 4 weeks at Banfield. The clientele is friendly, the staff listens and offers tips. The staff here are friendly and professional. They seem to be very knowledgeable. The price isn't too crazy expensive either. However, one thing I absolutely hate when I go there is the wait. They put my dog and I in a room and the two times I've been there, I'm waiting in the room for about 30 minutes. I thought the whole point of making an appointment is so you don't have to wait so long. I took my two kitties here last weekend for a annual check-up and had a great experience. The vet and techs were very friendly and knowledgeable. The exam was very thorough and they asked all the right questions to determine what vaccines/meds my cats need (and what they can live without). They didn't try to push us into anything the cats didn't really need. They were very gentle with my cats. One of them is very scared of the vet and he was pretty calm this time around. The prices seemed very reasonable. Our bill was a lot less than we've paid other places in DC and Montgomery County (but I think Columbia is a less pricey area in general). We bought heartworm & flea/tick medication from them at a good price and they helped us get some rebates as well.My only complaint is that we were waiting a while before they could see our cats. We came on a Saturday though when I bet they are a bit busier than usual. The upside is that they have Saturday appointments so no need to take off work! They had some very cute kittens for adoption in the lobby which helped pass the time. Read Less

Amazing! I was having a small emergency with my dog and they fit me in right away and we had never been there before. Everyone was so nice and helpful. I had my 60 pound dog and 2 kids under 3, so my hands were full. They offered to help my outside. They have toys in the waiting room for little ones and a prize bin for the little ones as well.  As a mom of a furry kid and 2 human ones I was so glad all  3 were happy. Dr. Reiter was so kind to my dog and so understanding. So took her time even though I know it was during their lunch break because if the short notice. I have been using this vet for over one year and have given them numerous chances to improve but I've given up. Every visit I have to wait 30 minutes-1 hour to see a doctor (even though I have an appointment time). I've called in prescriptions on two different occasions and showed up to pick tham up and they did not have them filled, one time they didn't even have the medication in stock! Then I tried to have them approve a prescription with 1800petmeds (two different occasions) and they NEVER RESPOND. I would not reccommend this business to any pet owner unless you have a world of patience. Read Less
