After doing a lot of research for the perfect place in our area, we brought our dog here for oral care. We knew he would need a deep clean or maybe some extractions, so I kept putting it off because I didn't want him to go under anesthesia. I was such a nervous wreck the week leading up to the appointment. The moment I walked in I felt so much better because the receptionist were all so friendly. After meeting with the doctor I felt even better! The DR was so knowlegable and answered all my crazy questions! He also kept he updated during surgery up until I was able to pick up my baby. We ended up doing two extractions and a deep clean ! Healing process went perfect and he educated us with the after care! He was back to his normal routine after 2 weeks! Read Less

We have been going to Kentlands Veterinary since we moved to Gaithersburg 1 year ago, and I cannot recommend them enough. My dogs have monthly visits for nail trims, and other routine things. My dogs recently got into a skirmish over Christmas which resulted in a tear to my sweet Bobby's eyelid. Dr. Handel had to surgically repair Bobby's eyelid, and did a top-notch job on it. This is our third day post-surgery and I am noticing already how seamlessly his eyelid has been sutured. I am so grateful to have such talented doctors for my babies right around the corner from our house. We also have a 12 year old Maine Coon mix who has to come in from time to time because he's developed IBS in his old age. The staff is always super responsive and helpful when it's time to refill his medication, and I appreciate that they are always on top of things. Dr. Reitz usually sees Monty and always knows what to recommend for his ailments (recently, we found he was suffering from arthritis when he had been limping on a rear leg). Again, my heart is full of gratitude that I am able to have such excellent medical services available to my fur babies in such close proximity to my home. We had previously used Atlas vet in DC for years, which I also highly recommend but it is too far from our new home after our last move, and I was very nervous about switching. My experience with Kentlands Vet has been excellent, though, and I would recommend this clinic to anyone without hesitation. Read Less

I have been taking my dogs, Petey and Lucy, to Kentlands for about 6 months. Both of them are agility dogs, and my older dog goes to Kentlands every week for underwater treadmill to help with conditioning for agility. My younger dog has had two injuries and has gone to Kentlands for rehab. Everyone is so friendly and they completely know what they are doing with rehabbing my dogs. Kentlands Veterinary Hospital is the best! I was looking for a new vet and my friend recommended them to me, and I am forever grateful! The front staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. We were greeted right away and taken into an exam room. My dog Polar, was completely at ease and comfortable while being examined by Dr. Stephanie Reitz. Polar was so happy that she wagged her tail and gave kisses to Dr. Reitz, which has never happened before with any other vets! I'm happy to say Polar has found her new vet! Read Less

Our experience was not the best. The vet was overly salesy for products (food, heartworm, etc). Which is tolerable, because as customers, we can just say "no, thanks". However, more serious to why we won't return as customer's, is our dog was mistakenly given a rabies vaccine when she didn't need one, she was up to date under a 3 year rabies given one year previously. It was explained that it was an accidental tech error. We were refunded the cost of the vaccine, but I can't get past a vet reading our dogs chart incorrectly, and administering care as a result. This made us lose faith that in a future situation, where the lacking attention to details could lend to more serious medical situation for a member of our family. Another mistake of that nature is something we just don't want to risk ever again. Read Less

Our beautiful cat named Gracie is a very happy and kind cat. We took her to this clinic because we had a coupon. The staff treated her so well, it was hard to stop her from purring on the exam table so they could check her vitals. She also got her rabies shot while there. Will go back and I highly recommend. Kentlands Veterinary Hospital is my go-to place for my pup for regular check-ups. The staff are friendly and Dr. Handel is extremely knowledgeable about the different pets that visit him. I really appreciated him taking the time to explain dog's diagnosis and he even shared with me his business card to send him any emails if I had any questions. He also gave me tips and advice on helping my dog to maintain a healthy weight. I did have to wait 20-30 minutes after I made the appointment since it was so busy, but again Dr. Handel took the time to explain and answer any questions I had. My family has been going to Dr.Handel for 20+ years with all of our family dogs. He's extremely knowledgable and so patient with explaining all the options. I've been taking my dogs to Kentlands Veterinary Hospital for about 9-10 years now. I (unfortunately) had to take my pups to a vet Fairfax, VA for the past 3 years ... & was extremely disappointed. I'm extremely happy to be back to the area & back to seeing Dr. Handel! I truly cannot trust my pets well-being with another doctor. Dr. Handel always goes above & beyond the call of duty for his patients! He is by far the best vet in the area (DMV), & I don't say that lightly. He is very understanding of each of his patients needs, extremely knowledgeable in his field, & isn't one of those vets who seems to be about money. Came here late on a Friday when my other vet said they couldn't get us in until late Monday (despite having plenty of hours left Friday, Saturday, and Monday. But they would see me with a $75 "emergency fee". ) Staff was friendly on the phone and in person. I was brought to a room promptly and seen on schedule. Dr. Reitz was very friendly and genuinely cared about the dog. Despite my dog having several acute problems, she did not do the usual vet "let's get blood work and an X-ray just to be safe". She took a practical and thoughtful approach to my dog's problems and I think it saved me a lot of wasted money in the end. She prescribed some medications after discussing options with me as to the best way to approach each problem. I felt that I left well informed and with the right solution. Great place with great people! Everyone that works in the office is very friendly and understanding. We've had a few issues needing same day service like bee stings and they took us within the hour. They usually have availability throughout the day for non emergency appointments as well. Have recommended to others and will continue to do so. Read Less

I hesitate to review this vet, because if more people knew how comprehensive, committed and kind the entire staff here are, they'd be totally swamped and getting an appointment would be impossible! This is the best clinic in Maryland. Dr. Handel is very active in the community - check the license of other vets and you'll see his signature on behalf of the State licensing board. They are also the go-to vet for the boarding kennel I use. Our pets have been patients here for years, and it seems most other local professionals in pet-related fields know and love this group. I just moved here from Texas and had an emergency with my dog. After a horrible experience with the Muddy Branch Veterinary Center who refused to help me I was greeted very warmly by this place, the Kentlands Veterinary Hospital. Kentlands Veterinary Hospital not only got in me in within the next hour but they offered to collect my dog's records from our previous veterinarian for me. They also took me back to see my dog's x-rays so that I could understand what they were doing and I had a chance to look at what they were looking at. I also received two follow up calls from the actual vet to make sure that my dog was doing alright after the visit. It was fantastic service, even better than my last vet. This place is FANTASTIC! This practice is above and beyond in their care for animals. They often have many less invasive ways in caring for our pets. We had been going there for 14 years until are beloved Samson passed away last May. Dr. Handel is fantastic and communicates the issues very well. **Update**We have been continuing hydrotherapy for Alex for about a year now. And Jess and the wonderful staff has continued to work wonders on my boy! I firmly believe that without them and the magic wand that Jess has in her possession,  Alex would not have gotten this far. She works with him each week  and was there for me when he tore his other acl. She came up with a plan to help him "get back on his feet" and worked with him until he did just that. Everyone there loves animals. They love Alex. I truly can't ask for anything more than that. We stared coming here about 8 months ago when my 11 year old mastiff mix was diagnosed with a partial ACL tear. After seeing a specialist, we were referred to Jessica for physical thearpy. This thearpy has been night and day difference for him. It has also really helped his arthritis. The staff is very nice,warm and welcoming.  They all know who Alex is when he walks in the door. He is like Norm from cheers.Alex knows what days he goes to his "spa" day and gets soooo excited when we get there! We just moved to Gaithersburg from DC and were excited to see that there is a vet clinic so close to our new house. We took our two boy cats in for a check-up and shots yesterday, and had a great experience. We got there about 30 minutes before our appointment, but were immediately shown into an exam room. The vet was professional and kind (even when one of our cats decided to become devil cat and growled/hissed/shrieked nonstop). He gave us some advice on how to get devil cat to lose weight without trying to push expensive treatments on us. We will be taking our dog in tomorrow and are looking forward to another positive experience! (I will up this from 4 to 5 stars once we have more than one visit under our belts). Read Less

I have been taking my dog to Kentlands for most of his life.  I now drive the 40+ minutes from Alexandria, VA just to maintain his top notch level of care, after moving from Gaithersburg 4 years ago. Dr Handel and his staff are like family, and they treat my dog as one of their own. We have also had extra special rehab care from Jessica. I count myself lucky to have found Kentlands Vet. I've had pets for the last 25 years, and have used a number of the clinics around this area, and Kentland's is hands down the best clinic we've used.  Here's why:1. They don't do unnecessary testing to drive up cost.  We had dachshunds, who are notorious for having disc issues, and instead of spending thousands on an MRI for that diagnosis, they were able to diagnose with an x-ray and exam, and successfully treat the dogs.  We used both medication and some holistic approaches.  They really take a common sense approach to animal medicine.2.  The entire staff is highly knowledgeable.  The doctors go the extra mile to research and treat complex issues.  The tech staff can answer almost any question thrown at them, and everyone is so helpful regarding treatments, food, etc.  3.  They truly care about animals.  When our cat had cancer and a perforated bowel, the staff stayed late so that my husband could drive home from DC to say goodbye to our pet.  They fit us into a busy schedule to euthanize a gerbil, so that he wouldn't suffer.  They take every person and animal's feelings into consideration.  We've used Kentland's Vet Hospital for everything from yearly exams, to physical therapy and pain management for our older pets, to helping animals cope with new babies in the house.  We'll never go anywhere else, because I know I can trust them to take the very best care of my family members. Not only did they squeeze us in but they treated us very kindly and were very gentle with our pet rat.  Our rat came in with an infected foot and Dr. Handal gave us many treatment options and provided a quote for treatment.  It's the most reasonable vet bill for an exotic animal that I have ever received.  Our rat seemed quite comfortable and we hope he's on the mend.  We will use this Vet from now on.  Oh and the staff was amazing!! I have a GSD that participates in the very physically demanding sport of Schutzhund/IPO. He had a grade I luxated patella that went undiagnosed for a very long time and as a result, his rear wasn't as strong as it could be and he struggled with jumping not only physically at times but also mentally. Neither the orthopedic vet or my vet suggested underwater treadmill (actually, the Ortho vet said it wouldn't do any good) or laser treatment, but at the advice of a friend, I decided to give Jessica Lorey a try. The consult was thorough and she explained exactly how underwater treadmill would improve my dog's condition and strengthen everything around the knee and in the rear along with why some initial laser treatments would help. She also took the time to explain how that physical improvement would effect my dog's mental confidence to then re-train jumping. She was correct on ALL accounts! She stayed interested in every part of his training progression and truly gets excited when he succeeds. She loves him and he loves her! we now don't have to concentrate on the knee, however, I am continuing with Jess. We go once a week and she has developed a program for total conditioning. She has strengthened his core and overall strength and endurance. The sport of Schutzhund/IPO is very demanding physically and I feel Jessica is the best investment I can make to keep my dog fit and to safeguard against injuries for the sport that he loves so much so! I have had experience with the rehab department of Kentlands for over two years. I cannot think of one negative thing to say about my experiences. As an experienced dog owner and one who has dogs who participate in performance dog sports (flyball, agility, etc) it is important to me that the care they receive is outstanding and up to date. I have been taking my dogs to Jess for both rehab (after ACL surgery) and conditioning for performance sports. The quality of care she provides is equal to or above all of the "top notch" rehab facilities I have visited in the DC Metro area (with the bonus being she is closer to me than the usual hour drive I used to take). She provides good diagnostics and personalized care to match each individualized dog's needs. She does not provide a cookie cutter approach to rehab and understands the importance of rehabbing and conditioning dogs at the level they are at so they can reach peak performance. Not to mention that after recent renovations the facility feels fresh and new. Lastly, I am forever grateful to this veterinary hospital for providing vet care to my sick dog (even though we had only been going to rehab there) in a life threatening emergency. Top notch! Jessica Lorey (rehab specialist) and Dr. Handel are absolutely among the best veterinary and rehab specialists with whom I have worked. My dogs are not necessarily the easiest to work with, particularly if you are accustomed to rehabbing disabled dogs. They both seem to understand/appreciate the power and intensity of my dogs and work with me to harness it in an intelligent, constructive manner. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dr. Handel and his team care as much about my furbaby as I do. They have done so much for me and my boxer, Apollo. He's been going to the Kentlands vet for about 5-6 years. I know pretty much all of the staff. I highly recommend Jess Lorey as a veterinary physical therapist. We have had a wonderful experience with Kentlands. When our dog was diagnosed with a tear in his shoulder that was not fixable with surgery, we looked for holistic treatment and amazingly found Kentlands. Our dog started with acupuncture with Dr. Handel and we saw improvement after one treatment. We then added physical therapy and although both were helpful our biggest success has been with the amazing physical therapy. Jesse has taken our aging dog from one that limped and couldn't put his leg down to a dog who now runs on hikes and is so very much happier. Since working with Jesse, the older he gets, the younger he acts! We are very grateful to Kentlands and have had nothing but great experiences, although we continue to use our regular vet as primary because of convenience. Read Less

It's taken me years since our beloved cat died to write this review. We had previously used Dr. Handel but regrettably switched to Dr. Dowdy. Less than 3 weeks after she diagnosed diarrhea and hundreds of dollars in tests later to KVH, and our cat needed to be seen by the ER vet at VCA where we got the terrible diagnosis of leukemia. Less than a week later our cat died from metastatic disease. When I brought her in to be put to sleep, Dr. Dowdy took one look at her and said "the cat looks terrible but you're doing the right thing." I have been going to Kentlands for at least 6 years.  I have two doxies, and had a cat that passed away.  One of my doxies ruptured two discs in her back.  It was sudden and with no warning, and she was basically paralyzed from the middle of her back on.  I saw Dr. Handel, who tried acupuncture and laser therapy for about a week.  She actually improved somewhat, then took a downturn and was even worse.  We brought her back in and Dr. Handel said he couldn't do anything more and recommended going to the Leesburg Emergency Vet hospital where Dr. Busch did the surgery. (big recommendation for him too!) About a week after the surgery, she started acupuncture, laser therapy and water therapy and she was walking in about 10 days!  You can hardly notice anything wrong.  My other doxie seemed to be getting some back issues (they are siblings) so we started her on water therapy also to strengthen her back, and both are doing fine.   My cat had hyperthyroidism and mostly saw Dr. Dowdy, although I think Dr. Handel saw her a couple of times also.  They knew I was on a budget, and suggested a different form of medication which was cheaper.  Dr. Handel talked to me about some of the treatments for hyperthyroidism, just so I would be aware of them, but knowing my budgetary limitations, and my cat's age, knew it probably wouldn't be something I could do.  He didn't push it - just wanted to make sure I knew the options were out there.   I am very impressed with both Dr. Handel and Dr. Dowdy.  They both have seen the dogs.  I have a new kitten and the only reason I don't bring them there is that I live up in Frederick, and did't want to have to bring a cat all the way down here.  It's not as hard to do with dogs.  I have never felt rushed in my appointments with either one.  All of my questions are answered and I have called a couple of times just to ask questions.  If one of the doctors weren't available when I called, one of them would always call me back by the end of the day. I have taken my pets to the Kentlands Veterinary Hospital for over 10 years. It's a very clean, friendly environment, they stick to the appointment times, and Dr. Dowdy and Dr. Handl are two of the most dedicated vets I've ever met. They genuinely care about the well being of the animals. They offer affordable treatment options and even make follow up phone calls (I've never met a vet who has done this before). I have recommended Kentlands Vet to all of my friends and every one of them has switched. I cannot recommend them enough. They have truly saved my pets lives.Read Less

I keep going back and forth if I should give 1 star or 2. This review is going to be very long but if you love your 4 leg family member it is worth a read. In 2007 I purchased my first puppy, I took him into Kentlands Vet and he saw a vet who is now no longer there, however she was a great vet and answered all my questions, even stupid ones.2008 when she was no longer there I took my dog to see Dr. Handel who is also the owner, it was time for annual shots. I told Dr. Handel that in the previous year the vet spaced the shots out and I brought him 2-3 times that week for a quick 5 min visit since I live seconds away. He said it will be fine and gave all at once. My dog is 10 lbs, a little guy! I took my dog home and noticed he stopped moving, his breathing was out of wack and when I looked at his tongue it was COMPLETELY white. I rushed him right back to the vet and the second I walked in Dr. Handel was at the front desk and grabbed my dog and ran to the back. It was horrible, I still remember every moment of that afternoon. He wasn't sure if my dog was going to make it and said I might have to rush him to an emergency vet. Thank god my dog pulled through and he was okay and ready to go home that night around 8pm. As I am ready to walk out the door, Dr. Handels RUDE (I would love to use a different choice of word) wife hands me a bill, which I still have in my files which was around $470. SERIOUSLY? I flipped out and said YOUR HUSBAND NEARLY KILLED MY DOG. I demanded the lot numbers for the shots given and told them I was going to place a complaint with the state and notify the FDA. Once I said that she told me they were deleting the bill and I wouldnt have to worry about it. As I was getting in my car a vet tech who I knew though a mutual friend approached me and said "You didnt hear it from me, however this is the 4th dog this happened to this month, there was a bad batch of vaccinations that they were sending back." The next morning I took my dog back to have his catheter removed from his hand and I told the vet I heard from the grapevine about this he confirmed it and said yes we got word about it and your dogs reaction will be reported to them too. My question still to this day is then why was my dog given that shot! I will tell you why, because Dr. Handel wanted to make a quick $40 bucks off of it.After that horrible experience I did go back to see Dr. Dowdy to give her a try and she is great. I really like her and so does my dog.  I will only see her and if I see Dr. Handel touch my dog I know I will be leaving his office in handcuffs. Read Less

I meant to write this review last year after out cat had surgery but kept forgetting.  We have been going to Kentlands vet for about 7 years and we have multiple pets (dogs and cats).  We have had great service and really trust Kentlands Vet.Dr Handel and Dr Dowdy both have slightly different styles but I think they are good and we have no real preference although I think of Dr Handel as more of a cat person and Dr Dowdy as more of a dog person.   I wouldn't hesitate to take my dogs to Dr Handel though nor would I hesitate to take my cats to Dr Dowdy.   I don't have any experience with small animals so I can't comment on that.  Anyway, last year our cat had surgery and we were given our options and alternatives  including possible alternatives to surgery and even told it'd be cheaper to go to an animal hospital for the surgery.  We went with Kentlands vet because we trust them.  Not that we have had a lot of problems with our cats and dogs but overall the care we have received is pretty top notch.  We initially started going there after we were recommended them by the Montgomery County Humane Society and we lived close by, even though we live further away now, we still go to Kentlands.   I think their prices are in line with other vets in the area and may be even slightly cheaper than some other vets based on comments I've received from friends/coworkers.   We've also received a multipet discount as well.  Overall, I highly recommend them for veterinary care. I've been here on several occasions and found the staff to be extremely rude every time.  I've met with both doctors:  Dr Dowdy is loud and a little bit obnoxious and very pushy.  Dr Handel is nice but his expertise is questionable.  He insisted that I take x-rays on my dogs stomach since she was having terrible diarrhea.  I agreed to do so even though it is very expensive.  He scared the living crap out of me because he saw something that did not belong in her stomach.  He insisted that I take her to emergency VCA animal hospital.  Instead I took her to another local veterinary hospital-I showed the doctor the same x-ray and she concluded that it was literally the lining of my dog's stomach.Based on the many times I have been to this place the care and well being of my dogs came secondary.  They prioritize charging you lots of $$ for lots of different tests x-rays, medications, examinations-- they are not practical. I found the staff here to be unfriendly and preoccupied each time I brought my cat in for a visit. I switched vet offices because my last visit convinced me that they were more concerned with how to charge me more money that how to do the right thing for my cat. I actually had to correct one of the Drs who failed to read my cat's chart after she suggested unnecessary procedures and told me my cat was "young" (when in fact during her previous visit she had geriatric tests done because she is 10). I am giving two stars because I did like Dr. Handel. Unfortunately the other members of his staff ruined my experience. We have since switched veterinarians. Read Less

We have three rabbits and one is a rescue rabbit who has teeth and ear problems.  We started going to Kentlands Veterinary Hospital in October 2011 after trying two other "exotic" vets over four years.  We were impressed by the staff, particularly Dr. Handel and his compassion towards the animals.  Our previous vet treated our rescue bun as a number and cash cow.  Every time we would think the rabbit is in pain we would bring her in to get her teeth looked at.  Even if nothing was done we would get charged $75 for a full exam. Kentlands Veterinary Hospital is not that way at all.  It was reassuring to know if we thought something may be off we could get it checked out and not be out an exorbitant amount of money.  He explains what the options are and will patiently answer all your questions.  It is a small place with only two exam rooms and two vets (and a cat with one eye!) but I've never had a problem getting an appointment.  We've been very happy with Kentlands Veterinary Hospital and happy to have found a vet who wants to make sure the animal is happy/healthy and not just clinically ok.
