I end up paying $83.90 because I was also charged for an office visit. .We've never paid this much for a rabies shot. they really need to train staff who answer phone and schedule appointments.  This is a gross oversite in price.  All staff should know and explain to callers what their TOTAL cost would be. They may have just lost a client because of this. Read Less

Would give 0 stars if I could. After being a patient here for 7 years and driving here from DC the vet couldn't even be bothered to show up. I waited for an hour for the vet and she wouldn't even answer her phone to update the staff and patients on when she would be gracing everyone with her presence. She called and said she's on her way but would not give an eta. They told me I could leave my dog for a "few hours" and they'd call me. After telling them that's not an option I drove from DC and need to go back there, the staff didn't even seem to be apologetic nor did they care. I asked if they could help me find another vet in the area because my dog has to have the vaccines today in order to be boarded but they just shrugged it off. I made calls to local vets while sitting in their waiting room. This doesn't seem to have shocked them and her royal highness vet exhibits this behavior of not showing up fairly frequently. My favorite part of this was: "she doesn't answer her phone when she's driving so maybe she's on her way". I asked who doesn't have Bluetooth in their car this day and age and for their sky rocket prices how it's even possible she can't be bothered to answer the phone. I'm pulling my dog out of this clinic and strongly encourage everyone to do the same. With at least 20 vets in a 5 mile radius it's not difficult to find a good vet. Read Less

Zero Stars! STAY AWAY!!!! We have been going here for years despite the fact that it is outrageously expensive and they charge you for every conceivable service every time you go for an appointment. We had to board our dog for two weeks and paid extra for plush bed, etc. When we picked her up our dog was a mess. She was wet and her backside was stained and covered with urine and exuded a nasty odor.. The hair on her leg joints/elbows is worn off and the skin on these places is raw. Upon asking the staff about our dog's condition, they were silent and just stared at us. We had to ask for paper towels to wipe her off before putting her in the car. We paid almost $700 for this kind of treatment for our dog and after getting home we called the manager to voice our concerns. We were told by the manager that she would look into the matter and call us the next day. To date, we have not heard a word. Read Less

Took my datschund there.. they examined him and sent him home with pricey food and meds for inflamed intestines after X-rays.. sent us home.. day later my dog lost complete function of his rear legs.. I returned with my dog to be told that he is paralyzed and should be put down. He was 3.. I immediately took him to the emergency vet in annapolis and they diagnosed him with a spinal disease commonly found in the breed and showed me on the x rays I brought them:the calciumfied discs, performed a spinal fusion surgery and although he has a gnarly scar but I can truthfully say that was 5 years ago.. he is a happy healthy dog that brings my family great joy! That vet was clueless when I took my dog to him and when confronted they did not even offer me a refund on the worthless food and medication due to his clear misdiagnosis and uneducated attempted at helping my precious Otis.. people beware of this place.. my personal experience was horrible and I've been a dog daddy since I was a child and now have several happy healthy fur babies... I would not recommend this vet for anyone that have cats, if I could give no stars I would. We had our first appointment there for our kitten that we rescued and from the moment we arrived we felt that we were bothering them. We were greeted with people at the front desk staring at us. I had to be the first one to speak to tell them we were there for an appointment. We waited 45 minutes to be seen and no animals came from the back as we were waiting so it wasn't because they were with someone else. When we were seen the vet was very unfriendly. Our kitten already had almost all of his vaccinations when we rescued him except for one. The vet looked at his ears and said they were fine, a little dirty but no ear mites. She also looked at a patch of hair missing from his ear and said "we will just watch that".They took him into a back room for the one vaccination he needed, which I found weird that they didn't do in front of us. When he was in the back we could hear him screaming like he was in pain for about 5-7 minutes, my husband was ready to go in the back himself to get him. They bought him back to us and his ears were completely down and they just said that they went ahead cleaned them for us. A few days later he sounded congested so we took him to Crofton Veterinary Center because I was not going back to Gambrills. He had a sever upper respiratory infection. He also had ear mites when Gambrills told us he didn't. They also tested his patch on his ear and he tested positive for ringworm. The staff and doctor at Crofton were absolutely wonderful with him. They cleaned his ears in front of us and he didn't make a noise or even try to get away from the tech. We have had several follow ups with Crofton Veterinary Center and we LOVE them!Read Less

Up until about 6 years ago, Gambrill Vet Center was where my animals went. Regularly upon arrival, my pet and I would be escorted to an exam room at our appointment time and then exoerience a wait of an hour or longer. This was a pretty common occurance. Additionally, Dr Orenstein would NEVER apologize for the excessive wait time and as others have mentioned, barely acknowledge my pet. Oftentimes with my dog Haley (who is quite fearful of vets and requires a calm and caring demeanor), he would simply get annoyed with her and even forced a muzzle on her because she growled once rather than take moment to understand her. As to boarding there, at first they were decent and our dogs seemed to be ok but one time, we retrieved our cardigan corgi only to find she was covered in her own filth. When we asked why she was that way, they stated that they didn't notice...it was very obvious and turned out she had been harassed by a bigger dog. The groomer admitted she had seen this and they had done nothing to stop it. Additionally, when my corgi went in to be spayed, Dr Orenstein knicked the membrane around one of her kidneys, causing excessive bleeding, nearly killing the dog. Neither an apology nor a discount was offered as compensation for unsteady hands. As to their prices, they were quite expensive. Extra services and tests were strongly suggested with accompanying guilt trips in a car salesman-like manner. If you're looking for a good vet, please do yourself and your pets a favor and look elsewhere. We ended up going with Bay Country in Millersville and have been very happy with them. There is also a good vet in Annapolis near the mall going out of town. We now live in Anchorage, AK, but even all these years later, I still remember how poorly treated my pets and I were by GVC and Dr Orenstein. Read Less

Then when I was finally able to see him he insisted on tests that were on the opposite end of what the issue was in attempt to rack up the bill. We have been going to the GVC for a little over a year. In our experience, GVC routinely brings up tests, blood work and labs during every office visit no matter how routine. The way the information is presented is as if this is needed today, right this minute and you're put on the spot to make a decision in that second and in a tone that is judgmental if you don't jump and pay for the tests right then. Their prices are absolutely ridiculous and this is coming from several friends who have lived in Maryland for many, many years and from those who have actually worked at vets offices. While Maryland is known to have a high cost of living and everything here is ridiculously expensive, even by THAT standard, GVC is out of bounds. They are preying upon good owner's fears, making them feel as if every test under the sun is needed. In a GOOD veterinarian's office, they proactively plan ahead and give owners a heads up. They provide education, quotes and give owner's time to consider the options. At GVC, there is no quote given, no planning things out with the owner such that they may make financial plans, no consideration given that people can't just come in and throw down $1000 unexpectedly. You come in for a routine ear infection (something pretty common in dogs) and you walk out having been tested for other things and paying $200 or more. Every.single.time. They are over-charging people BIG TIME. They have to pay for that pretty building somehow, right? We are not cheapskate owners who don't want to spend money on our dogs. In fact, we've spent quite a lot on them through the years. But up until moving here a year ago, our former vet let us know we only needed to bring them in once a year for their health exam and *gasp* they actually did the vaccinations at the same time so owner's wouldn't have to make a 2nd costly office visit! Imagine that, a veterinarian's office that actually thinks about owner's finances. Our one dog is prone to ear infections & so we would go once or twice a year for that. We were always out the door for no more than about $118 and that was WITH medicine. GVC wanted to charge me almost $80 for one medicine the other day. I will never go there again and if you're wise, you won't either. While I'm sure their vets on staff care about the animals, unfortunately, it's clear they work for a money-hungry, greedy person. This is the most unorganized business! Our first appointment was an emergency appointment on Christmas Eve. We took our pup who turned out had an allergic reaction at our scheduled time, only to show up and be told that the receptionist was looking at the wrong day when she told us our appointment time and to come back in an hour when a doctor would be in. So we did, and we weren't seen until an hour later after returning. We had a follow up appointment scheduled for this evening only to show and be told that someone had booked over our appointment and that there was no doctor to see our pup this evening. We have decided that we will no longer be using Gambrills Vet as our primary vet any longer. As a new client we were treated absolutely horribly by the front desk staff. The doctor however, was lovely and we thank her for helping our pouch. Unfortunately the office staff has lost the great doctor's a new client.Read Less

We've been going to Gambrills Veterinary Center for about a year now but after a particularly upsetting incident we are looking for another vet. As first time puppy owners, we were recommended this place by a neighbor and initially were pleased with the services. The front desk is very friendly and doggy daycare is amazing - a fantastic way to socialize your dog and tire them out! We could tell our dog loved all the people who worked daycare and the front desk because he would run up and lick them every time we went. We started questioning the veterinary services after a few visits. Dr. Orenstein would tell us a lot of information all at once without much explanation unless we asked specific questions, which as first time puppy owners was difficult trying to figure out what we should ask! We ended up leaving multiple times with a huge bill, bottles of medication, and a lot of questions about what just happened because he would tell us everything in about 30 seconds and walk out the door. Trying to communicate was also challenging as it usually took a day or more for him to return a phone call which was really concerning when our dog had a stomach bug. Needless to say his bedside manner was lacking and we began to wonder if we should look elsewhere. We really decided it was time to walk away when we boarded our dog for a week to go on vacation. Even though we were concerned with the way Dr. O handles office visits, we were pleased with the staff who takes care of the animals when boarding. (it is interesting to note, however, that in the year we've been there, we only recognize a few staff members who have been there the whole time. Seems to be a high turnover rate for employees). We got a call 2 days before we were about to come home from a new vet, Dr. Allison Gutwillig, and it was a very upsetting conversation. She called us in the morning saying there were multiple issues going on with our puppy, one of which involved him limping a bit at daycare, and she wanted to sedate him and do x-rays. She told us a list of tests she wanted to run, medications she wanted to give him, and delivered it all without giving us any specific information regarding his issues - just vague symptoms he seemed to be displaying and one hefty diagnosis for his limp that she said we must "have missed since we see him every day" - literally a quote from her mouth. It was such an upsetting phone call that we had to hang up and discuss it for a while. When we called back, we discussed our options since we were across the country and as nothing appeared to be an emergency, we told her our decision. She then proceeded to question us with "are you sure" when we told her our decisions which was extremely unprofessional and truly showed us she seemed to be after our money. We couldn't believe she wanted to sedate our dog without us even being there to see him ourselves when it was not an emergency!! It absolutely ruined the end of our trip and when I went to pick up the dog, he came running out in one of those cone collars which she never even mentioned!! The staff told us he had been in one since the day she called. We watched our dog closely once we brought him home and none of the issues she mentioned showed up at all, not even a limp. I DO NOT recommend anyone to come here for a vet visit as Dr. Orenstein and Dr. Gutwillig have terrible bedside manner and truly are after your money as opposed to what is really best for your pet. Doggy daycare is still a great service, but we are absolutely looking elsewhere for a vet. Very disappointing after a year. Read Less

The Gambrills Veterinary Center (GVC) systematically failed at providing care and treatment for my dogs UTI infection which cost us time, over $1100, and my dogs well-being. Over the THREE months of treatment for the UTI infection, I have personally experienced failed communications, poor treatment, bait and switch charges, and uncleanly conditions. My dog is still not cured and the veterinarians dont have an explanation for the continued problems. I will be finding another vet in the area and submitting a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and the Maryland Veterinary Board for their inconsistent fees and questionable practices. Below I have outlined in detail my experience with GVC that has brought me this position. I recently moved to the Gambrills area for a new job. Prior to moving, my dog had been diagnosed with a UTI infection and we had already performed treatment: a 14 day round of antibiotics, a urinalysis and lab analysis of the specific bacterial infection, and a 6 week round of antibiotics. After the 6 weeks of antibiotic, we began seeing the veterinarians at GVC. My first visit consisted of an urinalysis via free catch to identify if the UTI infection was gone. Free catch is a way of collecting urine whereby the urine is naturally excreted by the pet and caught in the process of disposal. GVC can do urinalysis in house so they can provide immediate treatment. The result came back with normal with no signs of bacterial infection. However, the vet saw that my dogs protein levels were a little high so the vet was still concerned. We were told to come back in a month to do another urinalysis. One month later, we returned and had another urinalysis performed using the free catch approach. The bacteria levels came back high thus another UTI. My dog had no symptoms of a problem. The doctor did not know what it could be if we werent seeing symptoms. I was told that it might be kidney stones so they took an x-ray of my dogs bladder and kidneys. No stones were found. The vet was concerned that the free catch approach may have tainted the analysis by adding bacteria not present in the urine. This was because the results were just outside normal. The vet decided to do a culture grow letting the urine sit for a few days to see if the bacteria would grow. Unfortunately, the urine extraction could not be done at the same visit and I had to return in 5 days for urine extraction. I called two other vets to ask about the free catch procedure. Both vets said that doing a free catch after identifying/treating a UTI will not provide in the type of critical and precise information we needed to address the problem. GVC should have been performing urine extraction directly from the bladder for all the urinalysis. Furthermore, the doctors did not provide other care procedures to help eliminate potential causes of the UTI. I had to look online to find out that aging dogs may have leakage which can cause recurrent UTIs. This can be addressed from cleanings after bowel movements and vitamins. This information was not provided nor hinted at by GVC. Days later, we returned to have urine extracted for the culture grow. Two days after, we received a call stating that the bacteria did grow and they were going to send out the culture for bacterial analysis. The intent was to give us more medicine to treat the specific bacteria in the UTI. The results came back the same exact (and most common) UTI infection we previously had, ECOLI. The doctors prescribed a different antibiotic this time for a 14 day treatment. They informed use to return 7 days after the antibiotic for another urinalysis. I asked how much that visit would cost. I was told $150. I asked what would be the list itemized charges. The assistant to me I would only need to do a urine extraction and grow and not see the doctor so it would actually only be $100. We returned and incurred a $250 charge. Due to character constraints I need to wrap up. We are no longer going to GVC. Read Less

Every time I've gone in, whether with my dog or my cat, it's been nothing but judgement and rudeness from the vet tech and the vets. The receptionists are the only nice people there! I am not a bad pet parent. My animals receive their examinations and shots on time every year, they get year-round parasite preventions, and appropriate grooming. But every time I'm in, there's something I'm doing "wrong" and my pets are going to "suffer" if I don't change my ways. This is more like a store where they are SELL, SELL, SELLING everything, rather than caring for my pets. I've been told that I need to pay $800 so my cat could be put under anesthesia so they could do a preventative teeth cleaning (she's 3 years old and her teeth are fine). I've been told that I should never buy flea medication from anywhere but their office. It's just goes on and on. They've never made a personal connection with me or spent much time at all making my pets feel comfortable. I will not be going back.Read Less

After being a loyal customer here for over half a decade (with out dog and our cat), we've thrown in the towel and are looking elsewhere for services. When we first started with Dr. O and his staff, we were very pleased with the level of care/service they provided in addition to the prices. As time has passed though, the quality of service has gradually eroded to something that we feel is just barely acceptable - especially considering the prices that have seemed to have just as gradually increased. Last year we had to bring our cat in to be seen three times (per Dr. O's recommendations) and we paid upwards of $500 for an "eye" issue she had - mind you it didn't require any surgeries or anything invasive otherwise. I feel like Dr. O played up a situation to be a lot more serious than it actually was in order to justify the continued visits he insisted we needed for "follow up" and the many medications that he recommended that didn't even necessarily work that well. Most recently we took our dog in there and we were told an issue he had would require invasive surgical procedures upwards of $1600. This is after we had already done our "homework" and discovered what the "ballpark" range would be and it was at least $500 less than what Dr. O insisted. Now that we have lived here a while, we have been able to network and make friends with people who actually own their own local clinic so that's where we are headed. Kind of sad that we let ourselves be pushed to this point where we are more than happy to leave GVC and Dr. O. At the same time, I'm relieved that we are finally going to be going to what we believe to be much more attentive care for our pets as much as sensitive to our personal finances. Read Less

I had a terrible experience here. Not only did Dr. O lack compassion, the bill was outrageous.  The reason why I brought my dog in was for stomach issues and he never even addressed them!!! But he did recommend a bunch of random immunizations even though my dog was sick.... I even had to remind him to check my dogs stool sample- which he didn't bother to do himself and had his tech do it for him  AND he charged me for a bag of dog food without even telling me.   His front office would've let me leave without it had I not checked my bill.  I said he was unsympathetic because he diagnosed my dog with heart murmur- which is the first time a vet had ever mentioned it.  He freaked me out and completely overwhelmed me without even explaining what it meant or how it could be treated. I will not be going back!!!! Read Less

The staff is mostly very friendly, especially the front desk staff.  There's even a gal in the office with a super sweet Ursula tattoo from the Little Mermaid.  Nice big, clean office.  Don't expect to be seen on time though.  We almost always have wait AT LEAST 15 minutes past the scheduled appointment time.BUT- the prices are absolutely INSANE.  For my 2 indoor-only cats to have their annual check ups and vaccinations, it was $616.23.  Granted, some of that was because my cat had an ear infection but WTF.  W. T. F.  Prices (PER CAT)--Office Visit:  $57.95Distemper feline 1 year:  $38.95Intestinal parasite fecal exam: $34.05Ear swab & microscopic exam: $37.65Ear cleaning mild: $29.95Tresaderm (ear drops): $65.25Follow-up visit (to check on ear infection): $40.50Leukemia/FIV/HW test: $61.00Blood sample collect/prep: $10.48Fecalizer: $9.20Ear cleaning: $19.62 - THIS IS LITERALLY TAKING A Q-TIP AND WIPING OUT ONE CAT EARIt's also been suggested that we spend another $500+ per cat to have them put to sleep to have their teeth cleaned.Once we saw pictures of Noah's Ark all over the office last night, that pretty much sealed the deal on switching vets (we're atheists).  I asked how I could get copies of their records.  OF COURSE that would be an extra $20.  Only other option?-- have only the list of vaccinations faxed to me.... because people still use fax machines in 2014 apparently... Maybe buy a scanner with all of the money you rip off from people!  When the fax came in, it wasn't even a list of prior vaccinations!  It was just a reminder of when their next vaccinations were due.  UGH!!!! I have used this Vet for the past year since I moved to the area.  They seem to provide good care for my dog when I have had to bring her in (annual check up, vaccinations plus two office visits). They also follow up with a phone call 1-2 days after an office visit to check on the pet.  This is always while I am at work, so it's always a voicemail and not that useful to me as I would call them if I had problems, however it's good business practice to show concern and retain customers. However, in my opinion they are over priced.  They charge a $58 office fee every time you go in, even for vaccinations (which are also a bit higher priced as well), which to me is ridiculous when it takes a total of 5 minutes max to administer a vaccination.  They require an annual physical, which I believe is around $50.  I suggest getting vaccinations done during the physical to avoid the separate office visit charge.  Also be prepared to wait.  Every time I have taken my dog in, I have had to wait at least 30 minutes, the last two times I have waited over an hour past my appointment time.  The facility is nice and clean. They are closed Saturday but open Sunday, which is convenient for those who can't make it in during the work week. The reason for my 3 star rating is high prices and waiting room time for appointments. Read Less

This is a over charge place I tell everyone to look around! We just moved to the area at the beginning of the year and chose GVC because it's right down the street from our house.  After reading so many negative reviews, I felt it necessary to write a good one of my own.  First thing, we've never had any major issues with our dog.  We've just taken her there for her normal checkups and yearly shots, so I don't have anything to say when it comes to major surgeries or anything like that.  Even so, we've never had any issues.  Secondly, I've never actually met Dr. Orenstein, so can't comment on his personality or bedside manner.  However, Dr. Christy Shoup (I think she's there Monday afternoons) was absolutely amazing!  You can tell that she loves animals and is extremely compassionate.  After Sadie's appointment, she even took us on a tour of the facility, which was really nice.  Speaking of the facility, it's incredibly clean. Most of the vets we have been to in the past smell of...well, animals.  You can tell that they deep clean this place daily, which I definitely appreciate since it's a medical office for animals.  Lastly, every time I've called, the women at the front desk answering the phones have been extremely friendly and accommodating.  I treat my dog as if she's a child (seriously, it's a little ridiculous), so am always calling before her appointments asking very detailed questions, and they've always been extremely sweet about it.  I truly have no complaints when it comes to the staff or facility...it is definitely a little more expensive than some of the other vets we've been to in the past, but in all honesty, most things in this area seem to be a little pricier.  We're taking her to GVC this weekend for her first stay in the boarding facility, so I will update my review once we return.UPDATE:  We came home to a very happy and tired pup!!  I warned the girls at the front desk that I would be calling to check up on our dog while we were away, and they were so sweet about it.  When I called, I got a full update and was assured that she was doing fine while we were away, which put my mind at ease.  Again, the only downside is the high prices.  After four days of boarding and updating all of her shots, we spent a pretty penny. Stay away. I have been going to Dr O for the past four years. I used GVC from the very beginning with puppy classes and had my pup fixed. After shopping around I knew GVC was a little pricey compared to other vets in the area but decided that top quality meant top prices. Over the years the price stayed the same and the service went way down. Recently it seems like my family is just a credit card. I called for help on Monday, no return call. I show up on Tuesday, paid my money and was told I would get a call with the results on Wednesday. I called Wednesday to check, nothing. I called Thursday, nothing. Finally late Thursday, i did get a call back. Im afraid its a little to late. It is time to take my family to a place where I'm not just a credit card and am considered important. Read Less

I never really felt any compassion when I took my dog here last year for an emergency.  Never got any definite answers.  Ended up having an almost $1500 hospital stay, because I was very scared for my dog, and taking him day after day spending tons of money, on things that I now find unnecessary.  And I am a person who is willing to spend as much money as possible to make my dog better- I was in a state of mind of trying to get him better, now looking in hindsight, I spent way too much money and feel I was taken advantage of.  The other staff besides the doctors were friendly, and the place is very clean but I would never recommend it or go back there. I have not had a good experience at Gambrills.  Dr. Orenstein's bedside manner is severely lacking.  I never felt as though he had any compassion for my dog or our situation which seems to be a trend on other review sites.  I thought Dr. Orenstein seemed knowledgeable so I decided to deal with the lack of compassion I felt in an effort to just get my dog well however I experienced other problems that eventually I could not overlook.  I had an extremely difficult time getting calls back from the doctor or anyone at the office after my dog had surgery just to let me know she came out OK or when they received test results to let me know they were in.  At one point my dog's condition worsened and I called to let him know and to get advice on what to do and after 8 1/2 hours and 3 phone calls with no response I had to physically drive to the location to try to get help and even then Dr. Orenstein did not have the courtesy to speak with me.  It is very disappointing as the facility is clean and offers many different services but I think they could greatly improve their customer service and retention if they used these reviews as tools to improve. Don't use them!  We made an appointment for them to board our two dogs over Easter long weekend (Thursday-Saturday) while we were going out of town; then we went to drop them off the next day (Thursday) they only had the reservation for one night.  The front desk person was nice but disorganized.  It took about 10 minutes, but she made the necessary changes, then told us they were closed on Saturday and Sunday, so we'd have to pay for Saturday and Sunday night too and pickup on Monday. The day before, my wife had very specifically asked if they were open on Saturday and they said "yes".  So we were either faced with paying an extra $200 for two days we didn't need or want, or we had to take the dogs on vacation with us at the last minute.  As I gave them our leashed dogs the vet tech commented how interesting -- my golden retriever's leash (a special order British-style slip leash) was just like the one the vet tech had (showing me the one in her hand); shortly thereafter, we started driving out of town; I explained to my wife what had taken so long, and we decided to turn around, get the dogs and save the $440 by taking the dogs with us.  When I walked back in, they gave us our two dogs, and the wrong leash, which I didn't notice until the end of the weekend when I took the dogs for a walk.  When I called them to explain the mix up and ask for my leash, they denied giving me the wrong leash and insisted that the torn up leash was ours and the new one was theirs.  To me it's just principle; I'm certain they kept my leash and they refused to even consider they made an honest mistake and they refused to return it.

Read Less

She also looked at a patch of hair missing from his ear and said "we will just watch that".They took him into a back room for the one vaccination he need, which I found weird that they didn't do in front of us. We have had several follow ups with Crofton Veterinary Center and we LOVE them! Read Less

His understanding on my reptile was about as extensive as a pamphlet at PetSmart. If it were not an emergency I would of left this place after hearing him tell me how my burrowing reptile would be happier in barren environment.

Read Less

Read Less

I have recently moved to the area and needed to find a new Vet. to see our senior Yorkie. I decided to check out Dr. Orenstein after driving by his beautiful clinic. We were greeted by a warm and pleasant staff, our wait time was minimal and we were able to get her shots updated. We were impressed with his knowledge and care for our dog. We are also excited that they offer boarding and grooming. I would definitely recommend them. Read Less

The doctor is more like a used car salesman then a Vet. And the techs are just as cold and salesman like. The hospital is beautiful if only the staff matched it!
