This was the only place who'd take our brand new rescue for a first checkup so we went there. The staff, vet and assistants were all nice to begin with since we are new pet/dog parents. But things changed when it was time for service. They were about to administer vaccines to our dog who was non cooperative, the assistant kept on pulling and tugging our dog. I reminded her that our dog was only spayed 4 days ago and they need to be gentle with her. She said it's ok and they took her inside. When they released our dog and on the way home, I noticed blood dripping from her stitches which has come apart, so we took her right back. They said these types of things happen and they had to perform another surgery on her. We didn't see any alternative and wanted our dog to be better soon so we let them. They charged us another $200+ for a procedure which was a result of their mistake! Never ever going back there. Read Less

I have taken two cats to this establishment to be checked out and will not be using them again. The initial fee to look at the cat is more than other places I have called but I took my pets here because of the location. This was a mistake. The first cat was brought in to have a lump looked at. The Vet looked at the lump and charged me $20 extra because the lump was not part of the initial exam. The vet then recommended some extra exams for other possible things that all would cost extra. I was confused and asked what the initial exam fee covered and the Vet got snide and told me it was for her to look at my cat (which took 5-10 minutes). I figured it was just the way they priced things and would have to do my own research to see if the exams where necessary. Basically I have to treat this vet like a mechanic. On the second visit I brought in a kitten and paid the overpriced fee to have her checked out. Was told she has a upper respiratory, fleas, and probably worms. Once again this took about 10 minutes and then the Vet left. No medication recommendations and was told any further exams would cost extra. So I took the kitten to a different place that had a free initial exam and guess what? Got medication and a cone for ring worms and medication for the respiratory infection all for just about the same price as the Wheaton "examination" fee. Read Less

I can't say I feel their vet that "specializes" in birds has a talent for his approach to birds and particular knowledge on treating birds. Not a bird whisperer to say the least. The way he approaches birds is aggressive and would cause fear in any bird. Man handling is the best description. No request for step up just an awkward grab. I have seen this with nervous rescue birds as well as very tame birds. Not gentle at all. No atrempt to make the bird comfortable. Shows no knowledge on basic skills on how to approach a bird that I have seen in every other avian vet I have seen in the last 20 years. When he inserts a needle he does so in such an abrupt way that it would cause fear or pain in any bird. I feel any bird would leave this vet a bit traumatized not only from an injury but also from the handling.I found out from the vet in Virginia that the drugs prescribed for me to give my bird by the vet were not standard drugs given to a bird. My bird suffered spasms as a side effect of the drugs and he should not have been given the drugs.  Thank goodness he healed when I got him to proper care in Virginia.  I very much question the knowledge and training this vet has for caring for birds.Only if there is no avian vet available would I return.  The vets in Fairfax at the Pender Animal Hosp for emergencies or Stahl Exotics show so much more care in the way they handle birds.  The drive to VA in traffic is very much worth it. Wheaton Animal Hospital doesn't sell itself well, but when you get to know them, they're actually a good animal hospital. Most of the staff appear initially unfriendly, but I think they're actually super busy because they tend to warm up after a minute or so. Medication is pricey here, but they are totally cool about giving you the prescription on paper and letting you shop around. They've also let me be an active participant in my pet's healthcare, which is super important to me but not always welcome at the vet's office. Sure, they're going to recommend a bunch of tests and procedures, because that's what vets do. But if you are vocal about what you do and don't want, they'll usually listen. All in all, this place is ok.I love the late hours. Some days they are open until 8. Also, tons of parking.Soooo... Update in 2016: Finally realized that prices don't have to be so high. Wheaton AH can get away with it because they're still in the DMV area, but if you go an hour outside of the city, you'll find drastically lower prices. Case in point: My cat Motown needed a tooth pulled. Wheaton AH told me it could be upwards of $1,200 because he's an older cat. Hold up. I'm sorry. You want me to pay more than a month's rent to have my cat's tooth pulled? No thank you. I ended up going to Columbia Pike Animal Hospital in Annandale. Sure, it's 50 minutes away, but they pulled my cat's tooth for a mere $600 (which frankly is still too much in my book). At any rate, just make sure you shop around before settling on a price here. You can probably get the same service cheaper elsewhere. Read Less

Words can not to express how pleased I am with this hospital. My rabbit got sick on Tuesday night and I was able to get an appointment on Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Schwartz spent over an over with me and my rabbit. He ran all kinds of tests and was so kind. He offered to file down her teeth the next day even though they only do that on Mondays. On Thursday I brought her back and again Dr. Schwartz spent time talking to me explaining everything that he was going to do and why. He called me after surgery and spent time with me when I picked her up. Before coming here I was taking my rabbits to an exotic vet in VA, I am thrilled to have found Dr. Schwartz and his wonderful staff. Read Less

Dr. Sussman is the BEST! She was with us through the discovery and treatment of our Lab having cancer, and literally held our hands through the very difficult and painful process of saying goodbye. She provided us with local resources for all our needs. I was so grateful, I made her a doggie quilt! When we were considering a new rescue puppy, she checked him out & gave her healthy ok before we decided to bring him home, after many many snuggles . That puppy is 6 years old now, and very happy & healthy thanks to Dr. Sussman. She always lets me know up front what he needs, how urgent it is, what the risks are (if any), how long it will take, and what the cost will be. Additionally she lets me know of any developments in vet medicine, or dietary issues that are applicable to our pooch, like new flea & tick treatments, foods recently discovered to be harmful to dogs, and even a new after hours animal clinic in my area that she personally reviewed. For a busy mom like me, that's very useful and vital information that helps me make informed decisions and plan accordingly. She is always extremely professional and very friendly to me and my dog, and he's always elated to see her. Every time I take my dog there, the wait is minimal (10 mins or less) before I am seen by the doctor. I also like the reminder postcards letting me know what shots etc. are due soon. It's obvious the staff are animal lovers, by the way they interact with my dog, as well as other pets in the waiting area. Also by their participation in hosting pet adoption events, and trying to reunite lost pets with their owners. I love the convenient location, right next to the mall, HELLO, and I have recommended several friends & neighbors to Dr. Sussman and Wheaton Animal Hospital! Keep up the good work gang!Read Less

I give 5 stars for the doctor... I took my guinea pig to see Dr. Schwartz. He's very knowledgeable and provided my piggy with the right medicine. Her problem cleared up immediately. He was very gentle and answer any questions or concerns I had. I felt confident that my piggy was in good hands. I give 4 stars for the check-in... I did not see a sign-in sheet and had to wait to be called. It seemed like a bit of an organized way to get people in and registered. I did not know if I was next in line or if the other person waiting. Overall, spacious parking in the back of the building, entrance has a second double door entry; all glass doors allow you to see who is coming in or going out. Staff is very friendly. Facility is very clean.Read Less
