TL;DR vet techs here are amazing but appointments always end up costing more money than I'm told beforehand due optional extra services that they perform and tell you about after. I started going here after I adopted my dog because they offered a free first post-adoption visit. I've now been here a handful of times and its a mixed bag. I've had very limited experience with the vet, she was in and out very quickly without speaking much to me. I have had nothing but positive experiences from interacting with the vet techs. They're great with my difficult dog! Mark behind he counter is my favorite. My first time there I ended up having a bad experience because I agreed to get the Lyme/lepto vaccine for my dog. No one told me that I had to be back exactly 3 weeks later for a booster, just that I needed a follow up appointment. When I called to schedule the follow up is when they told me I was too late but I could start the two doses over. (I had already paid $70 for dose #1 and wasn't about to pay $130 to start over because they didn't communicate well.) Whatever, I overlook this - we all make mistakes.Fast forward to this May (1 year later) when my pup needed an annual exam. When I schedule the appointment I'm told it should cost ~$280 but in reality it cost me $410 - a 50% increase over the initial quote. Why the extra cost? Despite that I said my dog only needed rabies, bordetella, and distemper, it turned out they vaccinated my dog for Lyme + lepto again! The 2 dose vaccine costs $130 and accounted for the extra cost. I guess at least this time I knew to come back 3 weeks later on the dot for the second dose.......We'll see how the future goes. I haven't decided if I'm going to find a new vet or not.UPDATE: 02june they won't fax online prescriptions for flea/tick and heart worm. They also won't write you new prescriptions when you lose the old written prescription. I'm finding a new vet. Read Less

Had a really unpleasant experience between here and MEAC. Took my cat to MEAC for an emergency visit, clearly he had an ear infection. There they prompted me to do a series of tests and x-rays and gave him antibiotics but did not call out anything else besides recommending I take him to Montgomery Animal later in the week. Once at MAH, they showed me a polyp in his ear that apparently MEAC missed...From there, it was a weeklong game of runaround on whether or not MAH could do the surgery to remove the polyp, I had to call daily and each time the receptionist or senior tech re-asked for my contact info (...) and swore they would call me back, not until a week later did they finally do so and mentioned that of their two surgeons, only 1 was board certified (what exactly is the other doing...?) and that I couldn't be scheduled till 2018. Okay... So now you've charged me for multiple appointments and nothing's actually been done yet, I have to go to a whole new hospital to get a consult to redo all the things you did? Great. Read Less

I have been taking my dog and three cats to Montgomery Animal Hospital since I moved to Maryland in 2012. I was nervous at first about starting with a new vet, but I ended up being so pleased with the care my animals get at MAH. The front desk staff are always friendly and helpful and remember me and my pets. I've had several different techs and they've all been professional and gentle with the animals (and me when I've been a worried pet mom!). Dr. Jaffe is a knowledgeable and thoughtful vet who takes time to fill me in on how he is thinking about symptoms, possible tests to do, and treatment. I have seen some of the other vets who work there for routine visits and all have been fine. I usually ask to be scheduled with Dr. Jaffe for complicated issues, though. We've been going to MAH for all our kitties since 2008 (eight years and counting). Dr Jaffe is the best. I also like one of their newer vets, Dr Matthew Benedict. The front desk has had little to no turnover the entire time I've been going. Sharon, Mark, they all recognize us immediately. Same vet techs, they remember our boys and their special ways. Some of the staff are family members of other employees, so the atmosphere has a very stable, homey family-business feel.Once while one of our cats was boarding there, the cat vomited. With cats, that's not uncommon. Me, I wouldn't have thought twice about cat puke. But Dr Jaffe was told about the vomit by a tech, and took it upon himself to examine the cat. He found a tumor in his mouth. He immediately called us and had the tumor biopsied. Unfortunately, it was malignant.... Dr Jaffe and his team were so sympathetic and helpful. He helped arrange referrals to both a specialized surgeon and to a chemo specialist (Southpaws), to help us figure out a comprehensive treatment plan, and he coordinated well with them. THEN we had to temporarily relocate and go on the road, out of town...and Dr Jaffe then worked with vets in other far away states to make sure our cat got continued care and meds. He went above and beyond. Although in the end our cat was not to survive his illness, I believe Dr Jaffe saved our little guy a lot of suffering. Both by being proactive in examining him at the first sign of distress,(a sign I probably would've ignored). And by actively cooperating so well with vets across the country. Read Less

I have very mixed feelings about Montgomery Animal Hospital. This place has been my dog's vet for the past 3 years and I have both good and bad things to say. Ultimately for me, I ended up switching to a different vet. First, the good. Dr. Jaffe is great. They've also just moved to a brand new and larger facility so things look and feel new. The techs and front desk people are very nice and pleasant. Now the bad. While Dr. Jaffe was technically my dog's vet, he himself saw my dog 3 out of 7 times in the last 3 years. While its understandable to have more than one doctor in a practice, I was not that impressed with one of the other doctors who saw my dog on her annual visit. My dog is a rescue and before I got her she had lyme so her lyme test still comes out positive every year, which is standard (sometimes it reverses but its normal for it to stay positive). She'd already been on doxycycline twice but the vet prescribed another round of doxy based on the positive lyme test. I sat down with the doctor and told her about my dog's lyme history and then she reviewed the file in front of me and eventually agreed that doxy would not be required. I was a bit perturbed that the doc hadn't reviewed the files on her own accord. I've also had difficulty obtaining written prescriptions for heartguard and tick preventatives so I can purchase these items elsewhere. You are under no obligation to buy medications from them but it took several phone calls and an actual visit to get a prescription and even then they tried to first sell me their product. I felt quite pressured to buy from them. The new place I have will approve requests by accredited third party vendors over the phone. Note that this initial review prompted a response from Dr. Jaffe, which started off hostile but eventually ended amicably. Dr. Jaffe clarified that he was unavailable for some time in the past due to personal issues, hence the substitute doctor with whom I had the negative experience with. He also agreed to speak with his staff about my other concerns and claimed his policy is exactly the opposite. I've decided to give him the benefit of doubt and have updated some of the content above and my rating to three stars (previous rating was two stars). Read Less

MAH is the best vet in the area in my opinion. We've been going there since 1986 when Dr. Cooper owned the practice. We were apprehensive when it was sold but we soon discovered that Dr. Jaffe is totally caring and committed to our pets. We have a 15 year old cat with heart and thyroid issues and Dr. Jaffe works closely with the specialist Dr. Cain to keep Robin healthy. We recently lost a 14 year old cat to lymphoma however Dr. Jaffe and Dr. Walston gave us a year with Cheetah that we didn't expect to get. He and his associates Dr. Walston and Dr. Gonzalez are all top notch. That whole practice is good. It's like family. When we had to let Cheetah go, the staff felt nearly as bad as we did and sent us a lovely sympathy card that they had signed. As far as the old facility being run down, that's why Dr. Jaffe opened the new clinic on Raldolph Rd. The old one was just too old to renovate. The new clinic has state of the art technology and separate recovery areas for cats and dogs. My husband and I toured it and loved it. Dr. Jaffe has done a great job looking after my guys..Read Less

I would not recommend this Vet office to anyone. My cat was sick so I took him into the office. He was not eating and was very lethargic. I was told by Dr. Waltzed it was just that he needed his teeth cleaned they looked infected . He ignored the fact that his gums were white which showed that he was anemic. That was on a Friday he didn't give him any medicine or any instructions how to get him to eat or even cared he was only eating chicken broth for 2 day. I also asked for blood test and he said he would do it Monday when he comes in for his teeth cleaning. I was shocked that he didn't want to do any blood testing. So I got a appt Monday but I called the office Saturday not sure if my cat would make it until Monday dr. Walleston said as long as he's getting some liquid in himhe would be fine. Long story short I was so concerned I took him to the emergency hospital a few hours later he ended up having cancer and was anemic he never had dental issues and I had to put my cat to sleep. My cat was misdiagnosed and suffered longer then he needed to. Furthermore he would of had dental work for no reason and would of suffered or died at the office Monday. I will start by saying this happened in 2008 so take this review that thing might have changed. We were bringing my two dogs to this vet and I loved that Dr Jaffe was an Auburn graduate. When my shepherd was old enough we took her there to be spayed. I got the horrible phone call at work that she died on the table. We rushed to the vet to say goodbye only to find out that Dr. Jaffe didn't do the surgery some woman we had never met did. That was all it took for me to never go back there. I did like Dr. Jaffe but for them to not tell me that he wouldn't be the one operating on my dog was unacceptable. Now that I have found a new vet that I love I make sure he is the only one touching my animals. I don't know if that woman is still there but she lied about how my dog died. We have been coming to Montgomery Animal Hospital since 1986 when Dr. Cooper owned the practice. He retired in 2003 and sold the practice to Dr. Jaffe. Dr. Jaffe is a great vet. I know how busy Dr. Jaffe is and it is easier for both of us for me to email him on status and such. He always promptly answers my emails. It is more convenient for his schedule and gives me the answers I need.. MAH isn't staffed 24 hours a day but most vets aren't which is why there are emergency clinics. As far as the reviewer who said her dog has to be muzzled because he is defensive, all I can say is that the staff have to protect themselves from possibly being bitten. All the staff do their best to make the pets feel comfortable. Let's face it. No animal likes the vet no matter how good they are. If you have to put a pet down which is an agonizing experience, all of the vets and staff give you all the time you need to be alone with your pet to say good-bye and lets you stay while he gives the injection. We recently had to go through that experience and the staff were so helpful. We even received a sympathy card signed by all the staff and Dr. Jaffe who had known our cat the best over 14 years. As far as the front desk staff not being caring, ,that is 100% WRONG. Mark, John and Jennifer are so friendly that it is like just coming in to visit. They now have a spanking new clinic on Randolph Rd. at Parklawn Drive with separate recovery and boarding areas for dogs and cats as well as a good size outside exercise area for dogs . Dr. Gonzalez works Mondays, Fridays and and every other Saturday at MAH and is also as good as Dr. Jaffe. I get really sick of reviewers who say that Dr. Jaffe is scum and just out for the money. He has to pay the labs that run the tests and the Dr. who does the ultrasounds on animals. They don't work for free. Some people expect all services to be free or very cheap and don't understand that he has to pay others to give your pet the best possible care. The serums for shots aren't free. The medications he gives aren't free. Grow up people! Why should he and his practice absorb all the outside costs of keeping your pets healthy. Would you begrudge the cost of medical care for your kids? You can always look into getting pet insurance. We don't have it because we don't begrudge the costs of keeping our pets healthy. When you get a pet, you have to give that pet the best possible care. Dr. Jaffe is it. Read Less

The front desk staff is very warm and friendly, but even for short visits (e.g. picking up the cat for boarding or having a tech appointment for the dog), it was a seldom an efficient in-and-out experience. All that said, we would not have gone anywhere else. The location on the Rockville Pike was very convenient. Everyone was super friendly and clearly cared about animals--in spite of being located in a large metro area, this place really had a small community feel. Generally speaking it was possible to be fit-in on the same day if something urgent came up and at worst, I never had to wait more than two or three days to get an appointment for my pets. Medically speaking, these folks are top quality. They solved my dog's lifelong separation anxiety habit of chewing her back foot and gave us clear instructions for helping her heal. They did an excellent job with her dental, as well, and with the routine stuff. We will miss the kind staff and vets, the sense of community, and the prince of relaxation: the office cat, Bigfoot (check out his feet--he has extra toes and literally has big feet!). We highly recommend them! Read Less

We have been taking our 2 dogs here and the care/service is so-so. Pros of the place include convenient location and Saturday clinic hours. Dr. Jaffe has also been available to answer questions via email. He was friendly and willing to answer questions on several visits. Several of the staff are nice and friendly. There are several cons that I have an issue with including: 1) the building and exam rooms are very small and old and could use a lot of updating, cleaning, and remodeling; 2) expensive prices (it cost me almost as much money to get 1 blood test drawn by a tech as a basic visit with the vet!); 3) they do not automatically inform you that you are scheduled to see a different vet. Dr. Jaffe is their primary vet, and when I booked appointments, I thought I was scheduling a visit with him. To my surprise, there are 1 or 2 other (part-time?) vets that work there especially on weekends and when Dr. Jaffe is out, but I like to have a choice about who I'm taking my pets to see and like to be told who my appointment is with rather than be surprised on the day of the visit that I'm not seeing who I thought I was taking my pets to see. 4) One time, when I came to pick up my toy puppy from a neuter and had questions to ask the vet about swelling at the site and an abnormal lab value, I asked to see the vet to have some questions answered. The staff told me that he was in the back busy doing surgery (when I could clearly see through the door that he was already out of surgery and was doing some miscellaneous tasks) and I never even got my concerns addressed when I had just spent over $400 getting my puppy neutered!!! Despite these cons, the office seems to be a very busy practice and is always full of customers when I visit, and this lends to an inefficient check-in/check-out process at times. Read Less

I donno, I have very mixed feelings about this place. My dog was traumatized as a witness of me being run over by a car on a crosswalk when he was still a puppy. Ever since he has been very protective and quite defensive when surrounded by more than two people, especially in tight claustrophobic-like places. With all that being said, shots and blood tests for my dog must be taken with a muzzle on. It is heart-breaking when the staff corners him and I have to hold him trying to prevent a freaking heart attack. One would think that people working at the animal hospital would know how to deal with a dog but they don't seem to care about it, whatsoever... The doctors are pretty nice and very pet friendly though...so yeah, once again, very mixed feelings... Read Less

Dr. Jaffe and his team are hands-down the most caring, compassionate people I know. Being in the pet care industry I hear a lot of complaints and horror stories about the care of animals and I can honestly say that in my 20 years of using Montgomery Animal Hospital for all my pets I have never had a single complaint. I consider Dr. Jaffe a friend and has watched my pets grow over the years. He truly has gone FAR above and beyond the normal expectations of a vet, even calling me from his personal cell phone to explain what it meant when I found out my dog had Lyme disease. I really cannot say enough nice things about this animal hospital and I am picky when it comes to my pets! Read Less

When our dog requires veterinary attention, we take him here because the entire staff at Montgomery Animal Hospital (MAH) is superb, and most are happy faces we continue to see year after year. I like that they all communicate proactively with each other regarding the status of our dog so I can call during the day to check on him with anyone that answers the phone. As was the case with two other local vets, not once have we had to take our dog back for a repeat visit due to the same symptoms because of a misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment.MAH's kennel staff always takes the time to speak to us about our dog's day when they bring him out, and Mark and the others that work the front desk are as informed and compassionate as they come. Before I ever knew what a canine anal gland rupture was, the front desk diagnosed it over the phone without having to speak to the doctor. Equally friendly and responsive are the doctors. Dr. Jaffe is always willing to take the time to speak with us. The entire staff operates as if they are trying to win you over as a new customer with each visit.Other reviews mention they have experienced hidden fees or billing overcharges. We have not had this problem once. MAH has always been up front with service pricing when I drop our dog off in the morning because I take the time to ask, and they always contact me during the day to discuss charges before proceeding with additional or substitute care solutions. It aggravates me to the Nth degree when people expect something for nothing. Legitimate, thorough veterinary care and medicines are not inexpensive, and any establishment charging otherwise simply is not providing trustworthy pet care day in and day out.Specifically regarding medication prices at MAH, we continue to purchase flea/tick and heart worm meds from MAH because they can't be found appreciably cheaper from other vets or online. Our dog has also required a prescription on at least two separate occasions over the years, and online price-shopping both times proved to be a waste of time.Location: Did I mention the location is extremely convenient?I cannot write enough good things about MAH. They only need one opportunity to convince you to switch. Read Less

There was a recent Groupon for half-off microchipping your pet and since I'm a new owner to an Abyssinian kitten, I thought it was a good investment. I went after work today and was extremely impressed with the staff and facilities. Everyone was extremely nice and friendly, even the non-staff patrons in the lobby. We saw the Doctor right away and they treated Milo like he was their own pet. Although we were just there for microchipping, the Doctor allowed us to ask questions we had and even cleaned Milo's ears. They were extremely professional with the microchipping procedure and Milo even purred while he had a humongous needle in his back.Very happy with our trip and am considering making Montgomery Animal Hospital our regular doctor for Milo. Seriously terrible. My precious 110 lb. doberman and I went there a total of 3 times. Each time the care was OK (JUST OK) almost like the vet (Dr. Jaffe) wanted to get in and then get out. My problem was with the billing and attitude of the desk staff. They were consistently borderline obnoxious, and overcharged me EVERY single time I went there. Also lots of hidden charges that I despise. Additionally, they will not fill prescriptions on line. This is not only inconvenient but costly. Whenever I asked about this practice I was given a different reason by different people which tells me there is no true reason other than to make $$$. I just switched vets and will hopefully have a better experience. The only reason why I left my pup's first vet was because we left VA. Read Less

My husband took our new rescue dog here the other day for a checkup. We were concerned about a hard lump on her lower back. The vet aspirated it and suggested a biopsy. So we did the biopsy, then my husband did some research and found that heartworm injections, which are given in the lower back area, cause this type of lump about 30% of the time. Now, did this vet not know that, or did she know it and didn't say anything because she wanted us to spend more money on the biopsy? Either way, pretty typical of vets who always want to run tests. Our last vet started talking about dialysis for our old, arthritic dog without mentioning that the Rimadyl she was on can cause kidney problems. I guess we are now still on the market for a decent vet who will care more about our dog than about squeezing every last dollar out of us. Read Less

Great. Read Less

I cant say enough good things about Montgomery Animal Hospital and Dr. Jaffe. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted by warm front desk staff who know you by name. Mark, Sharon, Stacie and all the wonderful, dedicated staff are educated and able to answer many of the basic questions you may have about your pet. Scheduling an appointment is easy and Dr. Jaffe is amazing. He is extremely caring and knowledgeable. You can tell how much he loves animals. When my dog was not feeling well, the whole staff was very involved. They even called and followed up to see how he was feeling. I was very impressed. That is something that is hard to find in businesses these days. I highly recommend MAH. Read Less

We drive over an hour to see Dr. Jaffe and his fabulous team at Montgomery Animal Hospital. This is truly an amazing place. Dr. Jaffe and all of the staff care deeply for their 4-legged customers AND pet owners. I will never forget the kindness and compassion they showed us when it was time to say our "goodbyes" to our last pet. I have known Dr. Jaffe and his staff for more than ten years now and we have never had a negative experience. Frankly, I don't think we have even had just an average experience. They go above and beyond to make our visits as easy as possible - on me and my pet. These are good people with big hearts who do incredibly things to care for and save animals. Read Less

I was referred here by a friend and I honestly can't say anything nice. The staff was unorganized and the woman who identified herself as the office manager using the baby voice seemed demeaning to the rest of the staff. They took my boyfriends cat out of the room to do vaccines which I find strange. They are overpriced and my paperwork had another animals name on it combined with ours. I highly recommend Montgomery Animal Hospital. Read Less

Before I left I made sure that I could return to have her sutures removed and the receptionist said that the removal of the sutures was included in the fee that I had paid. I called back 2 weeks later because it was time to remove the sutures and now they are saying I have to pay an extra $50 so that they could remove it! And not only that the people were extremely rude and I got cut off twice.

The new vet told me the truth. Again this was almost 8 years ago so things might be very different now. Read Less

Read Less

My husband and I just moved to Boston and we will really miss Montgomery Animal Hospital. The place is not perfect: as vets go, it's pretty expensive and administratively they're a little bit disorganized.

Read Less
