Recently my dog was diagnosed with a tumor on her spleen.  She has lost all mussel control and not doing well.  My current vet is over an hour away and I contacted some local vets to see what their costs were to put her to sleep.  I explained I had just spent $800 for xrays, blood work, etc. and had the records.  She explained that along with money to cremate my baby and return her ashes to me there was a cost over $70 to evaluate her.  Really?  I just spent $800 and have her charts as well as my current vet agreeing that this would be the best thing for her.  There was NO compassion on the phone what-so-ever.  And when I asked if they had a separate room or did this in an exam room, she coldly said, well if you are going to be with her when this happens then the exam room.  It was the tone of her voice, the lack of compassion, and the As a Matter of Fact attitude I received that made me not want to take her to them.  First impressions are everything and if she has no compassion while on the phone, what on earth makes me think she'll have compassion for my baby girl.   I only gave them 1 star because you can't input 0.  I will NEVER go there.  On top of everything I was told that they stay extremely busy and could take days if not a week to get her in.  Really?  My dog is suffering and this is the response I get!  I was also told by the girl on the phone that it's law that they need to evaluate my baby before they can perform such services.  Really?  Well if that's the case it's not by law that they have to charge over $70 to do it.  In the end I used another vet that was wonderful.  My baby is now at peace.  No thanks to this place! So my pups are my babies and since we are military and have to move a lot, finding a vet is always the most stressful part for me.  I am very thankful that we received a mailing from St. Charles Animal Hospital when we first arrived in MD and decided to give them a chance. I have some high maintenance pups and so far I've been VERY pleased with the care they have gotten there. I've seen two different vets and felt they were both knowledgeable and cared about my babies. My pups also don't like other dogs and they are VERY accommodating with letting you wait in the car and coming to get you rather than having to wait in the waiting room. One pup just recently have surgery there and they were very good with calling as soon as it was completed to tell me all went well. My poor baby Bash (Siamese) was vomiting, lethargic and not playing with her mouse and wanted nothing to do with her food.  I took her to another vet in the area a few days prior and she had gone downhill after receiving a rabies shot.  The vet recommended I take her to get a sonogram.  I phoned vets trying to find someone to do a monogram and by Thursday morning, I felt as if she needed care urgently and I phoned St. Charles and was able to get her in the same day.  I rushed home and we went to St. Charles and she was seen within minutes.  The staff from sign in to the techs handing Bash were fantastic.  They are all animal lovers and Bash showed no fear when they handled her.  Dr. Neuman (now her new vet) :) took new xrays as the ones from the previous vet were not very clear.  He explained to me all that was going on (and not) with her abdominal tract.  He said she did NOT need a sonogram.  He recommended surgery to remove the blockage and also check if she had swallowed something which was causing her vomiting.  Dr. Neuman performed the surgery and explained all in an email what he found.  I picked her up that night and we went home and she slept like a baby.  The next morning she actually came to me when I said, "time to eat".  Though she nibbled just a little, which was a fantastic sign, later that evening she ate heartily which was something she hadn't done in days.  Dr. Neuman emailed several times to check on her status and I was in awe at the caring nature and tone of his emails and the time he took from his busy schedule to email to see how Bash was feeling.  We have found a new vet and I am now scheduling an appointment for my other kitty to get a check up.  I would recommend Dr. Neuman to anyone who needs a loving, caring Dr. for their pets.  Thank you so much, Dr. Neuman and staff. Aside from the care my dog receives, I really appreciate the spacious waiting are (although I never wait for long) so all of the animal are not cramped into a tight space, which is stressful to them. This past Saturday, June 2, 2018, we had to make the difficult decision to put down our beloved St Bernard, Mr. Bentley. Dr. Siskovich and staff were amazing. It was one of the most calming, caring and heartfelt Humane Euthanasia I have ever experienced. The care they gave us and our Mr. Bentley, I can not give enough stars for. They explained the process and did not rush us at all. Placed us in a room with Bentley to spend as much time as we wanted and needed. Loved on us during our difficult time and ensured all our wishes for Bentley were taken care of. St. Charles Animal Hospital is top notch and the staff treat you like family. They push for unnecessary services just to pad the bill. I took my sick 20 year old cat in, and they wanted to do $900 in diagnostics alone. They pushed hard for a $170 blood test that gave no information. When I had a moment to think I asked if at the age of 20 would the diagnostic tests really result in something that would give a meaningful and happy extension of life, I was told not really and putting money towards palliative care would be the better option. I wish they had told me that before the $170 blood test. I just got a postcard from them listing services that another one of my cats supposedly needs. I'm finding it very hard to believe that my indoor only cat needs to be retested for feline leukemia and FIV or needs to be tested for worms. Just more unnecessary charges. Response to business' response: Telling someone who brought in a pet due to weight loss that the animal is very, very sick and possibly dying and then immediately pressing for diagnostics without giving the client the chance to think is wrong all the way around. Giving a shock like that and not allowing time to process is taking advantage of the person to get unnecessary procedures. And unless the vet didn't review the record, she would have seen notes of a discussion I had with a different vet at your practice where we talked about quality vs quantity of life and I had chosen at that time to not treat an unrelated condition because for my pet specifically quality was better than the itty bitty bit of quantity she would gain. Best experience we've had at the vet yet! My boyfriend and I are new to the Waldorf area and have been searching for a vet who could help our 1 year old border collie mix, Lyla, with her constant scratching and reoccurring rashes. After previously trying 2 other vets in the past 8 months who refused to provide her any meds or provide a proper diagnosis we came across St. Charles Animal. From the time we scheduled our visit to our first appointment everyone was very friendly and professional.Immediately upon seeing Lyla Dr. Davis and her Tech Marissa determined she had an infection and an allergy problem. They provided meds which have already showed improvement and thoroughly explained the process of how we can resolve her allergy issue.They made sure Lyla was comfortable and kept her calm through the whole visit which in turn eased our nerves as well. I took my sweet kitty Mustache to this vet after spending waaay to much money at another vet in Waldorf and them still not figuring out what was wrong with him, I decided to switch to SCAH. They did an ultra sound and found his bladder full of stones :( Who knows how long the build up was since he had had urinary problems since we found him almost 2 years ago. Dr. Neuman and Dr. Siskovich are fantastic and the staff are absolutely wonderful! Service has always been good until, my dog recently gotten a shot and started to have a reaction to the shot. Dogs where healthy dogs and nothing was wrong with either dog before the shots.Before my dog gotten the shot there was a paper giving to me of reactions that could happen.I informed the animal hospital of the symptoms my dog was having from the shot. They tell me it’s not from the shot it’s from my dogs into to something. My dogs are house dogs who get walked three times a day I see everything they are into. I am not from around here so when the receptionist answered the phone I told her that I wasn't from here and I am looking for a vet. Before I could finish by asking what are your requirements, she asked me if it was a medical emergency or not. I told her no it is not a medical emergency. She then told me that I have two people before me so hold on. The hold ended up hanging up on me. I just found that Rudd and if you are to busy to answer the phone, don't answer it if your going to be rude. I would have much rather her not have picked up the phone. I'll start with the positives.  The front office staff, vet technicians and vets that I've interacted with are all friendly. Now to the reason I stopped going here.  One of my dogs developed a problem where she was bleeding frequently after using the bathroom.  I took her in for this problem twice and she was seen by two different vets.  I showed them pictures and a video of the problem. Both diagnosis did not resolve the problem and over time it just worsened.  I decided to try a different vet in the area and on the first visit just by doing an anal probe, the vet was able to determine the cause of the bleeding.  My dog had to undergo a minor procedure and since then the problem has gone away.  The bottom line is this should have been caught by at least one of the vets at this facility.  Had I not sought another opinion my dog's health could've been jeopardized.  My pet's care is paramount and as a result of this situation, they have lost my trust and ultimately my business. I moved to the area back in July with my 8 month old puppy and my 1.5 year old cat. My puppy is a rescue who's had quite a few minor health issues, so I found a new vet right away. I could not possibly have asked for a better experience than what St. Charles Animal Hospital provides. We have made quite a few visits by now and each time is every bit as positive as the first. The front desk staff is so friendly and willing to accommodate us for short notice or evening appointments, the techs are always patient and gentle with my pup, and the veterinarians are so thorough in their exams and their explanations. It is so obvious that every employee truly cares about the animals they serve. When I adopt my big boy in 2012 he was 6 month to a 1 year old, I was living in Waldorf at the time and knew of this hospital  through my aunt. Dr. Neuman is amazing! After years of using another vet in Waldorf, I guess I became used to a level of care that I was not even aware was not as good! We brought our adult dog in for a wound on his tail, but also to get a second opinion on his skin condition. What amazed me most was that Dr. Neuman sent multiple follow-up emails to check in on our doggie's condition. He expressed genuine interest and concern about our pet which just increased my confidence in St. Charles Animal Hospital even more! I have never had a vet, or even my personal doctor, follow-up to see how the condition was progressing. I am floored and truly touched! I really don't know where to start.  My wife and I moved here 3 years ago, and bring our Dacshund in for routine care. Well.......our little fur baby started to show signs of a pinched nerve (IVDD).  I was in a panic and drove to St. Charles Animal Hostpital.  It wasn't even open yet when I spied someone in the parking lot.  I asked if she worked there, and she said, "Yes."  I explained the situation, and she said, "Go straight to the front, and I'll make sure the door's open."  We were having a bad day, right up to that point.  Once inside, we had an amazing experience.  OH! The nice lady in the parking lot?  It was Dr Davis!  She took care of our little guy like he was her own.  From the moment she went to work, we knew we had the "right" Doctor for us!  Here's a clue......when she loves on your dog like you do, then you got the right Doc!  Dr Davis took her time, explained what she was doing, and answered every question we had.  She offered a conservative treatment plan, and provided the right meds to get our little buddy on the path to recovery.  From the moment we arrived and through the follow up appt this weekend, she was completely in tune with us and our dog's needs (oh, and they gave us a follow up call to check on us).  AND, I can't say enough about the staff!  Always caring, always focused, and I've never seen a single person try to enforce their "will" upon an animal.  If our dog resists what they're doing, they take a break instead of "forcing" the issue.I just love these guys!  And for Active Duty they offer a discount!Give them a try, you won't be sorry. I've been to several vets in Charles County and this practice by far is the best. Reception is warm, knowledgeable and competent. It's easy to schedule routine appointments. My cats have been vetted by 3 doctors and I prefer Dr. Davis as she doesn't make me feel guilty for having overweight cats and informed me on weight loss diet. Their prices are very reasonable and lower than several places I have been. The waiting room is separated; cats on the left and dogs on the right. My cats take medication and they cut the tablets in half. So sweet. I'm moving to another county but I'm keeping them as my vet. Read Less

As a military transplant for Florida, I stressed over finding a new vet for my girl. Like most of us, taking our dogs (or cats etc) to the vet is hard enough, finding one you trust is painful. We have health insurance for our dog and the staff cheerfully have helped us navigate any snags in the claims process. The doctors are generous with their time and knowledge. I had been taking my dogs to the same family vet that my parents took our dogs to since I was a child. He has recently retired and I was a little apprehensive about taking them anywhere unfamiliar. But from the moment we walked through the front door I was quickly put at ease with the pleasant, cheerful but professional demeanor of the assistant at the front desk. Yesterday I took my newly adopted kitten in because he wasn't feeling good. Needless to say the facility and the staff were amazing. The receptionists were friendly, welcoming, and warm towards me. The best of all were my little guys vet technicians, they went above and beyond to make him feel comfortable while they checked him out. In addition they were more than willing to answer all my questions and help teach me things to keep my guy safe and healthy. They maintain a home-like atmosphere, the staff are caring and professional, and, though she is scared no matter what the circumstance, she is calm when we leave their office. FURTHER UPDATE: In a related, but separate situation, my cat recently spent five days at the emergency vet before being seen by Dr. Neuman immediately after being released from the hospital. I very much appreciate the care he and the techs gave my cat over the next week as my cat recovered from his illness. Surgery was presented early on in my cat's stay at the emergency hospital, but I resisted, as I didn't think the the chances of it solving my cat's urinary issue were worth the risks and expense. After several days of uncertainty about the correct course of treatment (and several miscommunications with the staff) Dr. Neuman presented an alternative (and much, much less expensive) treatment to try first. So far it's worked, and I'm grateful we may have avoided surgery.I still think there is room for improvement in terms of communication with the staff and doctors, but every in-person interaction has been great!UPDATED REVIEW: I was contacted by the practice's office manager shortly after writing the original review. She explained their policy about not responding to authorization requests from online retailers (a policy which I do not agree with), but did offer to order the prescription food directly and to price-match to the price of the online retailer.  I appreciated that offer, and did finally receive the food for my cats.Again, these are good vets and this is one of the very few practices in the area that is AAHA accredited.That alone is worth a great deal._____________________________________________________________I've always been fairly happy with St Charles. They're a bit pricey, but the staff and doctors are very nice and have worked with me on treating chronic issues for one of my pets. However, I have two cats that have developed behavioral issues, and at the recommendation of Dr. Davis, I sought the services of a pet behaviorist. The behaviorist recommended (among other things) that I try a prescription pet food formulated to reduce anxiety.  Dr. Davis gave me a prescription for the cat food a few weeks ago - and that's where their assistance stopped. I have not been able to locate a vet or pet supply store within 20 miles of my house that carried the food. I tried ordering it online, but the quickest method of ordering is to have the online supplier contact the vet directly for authorization.  I tried this method via Drs. Foster & Smith, only to wait six days for St. Charles to respond to requests for authorization. I finally called St. Charles myself to ask why they hadn't responded to Drs. Foster & Smith, and was told that they didn't respond to requests from online suppliers, so anything they would have received from Drs. Foster & Smith would have been disregarded.  1) thanks for being so completely uncooperative, and 2) thanks for letting me know, after receiving a request for authorization with my name on it, that you weren't going to respond to the request, and I'd have to figure out how to obtain a product FOR WHICH YOU GAVE ME A PRESCRIPTION on my own.So, by all means, use St. Charles for routine care for your pets. I'd recommend you find another veterinary office if you need something outside of the normal scope of care though. Read Less

Love all the doctors, they really care about your animal. They told me about optional shots my previous vet never gave my dogs. They recommend the shots because we live in the woods and our dogs have wooded area to run and play. Dr. Davis took a long time making my fear aggressive dog comfortable so she was able to do the exam and never suggested a muzzle. Dr. Davis also took the time to read through the previous vet records and got to know our family. Their waiting room even has a dog side and a cat side! So happy I found this practice!!! Read Less

I trust and respect all of the staff here. They have been taking care of my dog for 8 years and my dog is now 11 years old and in excellent health for her age. I can get appointments easily and that are  convenient and when I had the occasional need for an urgent matter they immediately responded with compassion and a truly caring attitude and worked with me to get my dog seen and taken care of. i don't think they are expensive for the service they provide. Good preventative care is much cheaper in the long run and I speak from experience after losing a dog misdiagnosed at chain store vet and ending up spending $$$$ for something that could have been prevented. All the staff are wonderful and really care about your pet. There a little pricy but after trying several other cheaper ones in the area 2 years ago (when I moved here) I decided I would rather pay extra to see a vet who TRULY CARES about my pet and I. They don't push a lot of extra stuff on you. They simply give you your options and tell you what there recommendation is. My favorite is Dr. Davis! What can I say about St. Charles Animal Hospital?  I love taking my dogs and cat here.  They are so loving and caring with all of my pets.  Just had to take my Pug in Monday and he was treated with such tender loving care.  From the receptionists, to the vet techs and vets these people are amazing.  Thanks so much for your excellent care of Bradley, Sheba and Midnight.  Thanks especially to Dr. Smilie, he has seen my pug on our last two visits and he is great with him. This has been my vet since I moved to Waldorf nearly sixteen years ago.  We trapped feral and stray cats for many years and fostered their litters.  They spayed and neutered those we trapped and checked out their kittens.  They've cared for our pet cats with an obvious love for animals.  They're especially gentle and sensitive when it comes to euthanasia.  I recommend you try to get an appointment with Dr. Siscovich; she is special.  She treats you like an intelligent person, explains things clearly, and just really loves the cats.  I'd recommend St. Charles Animal Hospital to anyone. St Charles Animal Hospital is wonderful. I have been bring my cats there for years. The staff is so friendly and they treat your pets as if they were their own. The doctors are great too....they are very knowledgeable and are make sure you know and understand everything they are doing when you bring in your pets. Great experience from the beginning. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Dr. Neuman and his staff took great care of our puppy who had broken her leg. Previous veterinarian was not managing her care appropriately and Dr. Neuman stepped in and has our baby girl on the road to recovery. SCAH will be our veterinarian of choice from now on. Read Less

Loved it!! And so did Capone. I have taken Capone to a local vet once before and let's just say he was not a happy camper. When I took him took the St. Charles animal hospital, he did not give the staff any problems that I've seen him give to the doctor at the other vet. So happy to find a vet that he does well with. I had to change vets because I moved, but this was a good place while I was going here. The renovations to the lobby have made it nice.The vets and lab assistants I've seen so far were all friendly.My cat had to get her yearly shots twice here as well as a couple of 10 & 16 week kitten checkups. They probably could have handled it a bit better, coaxed her into it more, but they were efficient at getting them done despite her fighting it. Read Less

I called for a same day appointment for my Yorkie mix who had been scratched in the eye. I was able to be seen the same day and the appointment was swift and informational.  The doctor explained everything in great detail as far as the injury, treatment and healing time.  She patiently answered all my questions and also provided information on getting my dog spayed in the future.Being a worrisome pet mom, I really appreciate the kind and swift service received. I recently moved into the area and finding a vet hospital that you and your pets like can be a bit challenging. I have three dogs, and when one of my puppies was getting sick. I took her in to get checked up on. The vet was friendly, nice, and seemed like she knew what she was doing. The next day I had to take my other puppy in for his first round of puppy shots. My puppy was 3 months old and weighed 40lbs at the time of the visit. I asked the vet how much bigger do you think he will get. He told me his adult weight will be 45 to 50 pounds. Well he is 6.5 months old and weighs 80 pounds now. So I'm pretty sure the vet does not know animals to well.  Anyone that saw my puppy knew he is going to be a big boy. Then he went into the back and right behind the door started talking rudely about me to his vet tech. If your going to talk about your clients wait till I can't hear you. I was so insulted and couldn't believe the rudeness that I never went back.I wish I could remember the names of the vets because the lady was really nice, but the guy vet was extremely unprofessional that I couldn't imagine giving another dollar to them. I had a wonderful experience at this hospital.  My dog has lots of allergies and has to see the vet often.  This was our first trip to St. Charles Animal Hospital and  Dr. Siskovich was so warm and loving with my little Phoebe.  She definitely has quite the touch with small animals.  I was equally impressed with her knowledge and the overall care she gave my dog.  She answered all my questions and spent a lot of time in the room discussing options for my dogs recurrent ear and allergy problems.  I was just as impressed with the techs and receptionists as well.  Everyone was so friendly, warm, and helpful.  I found this hospital due to yelp and I feel very lucky to have found them!! This was a pretty decent place. I brought my newly-rescued kitties here for a routine check-up, because the place had a deal going on. The staff members were very knowledgeable and professional. Dr. Dearie is wonderful - I highly recommend her! She will not hard-sell you any unnecessary meds or services, and genuinely cares about each and every animal that comes through the door. I watched the way that she interacted with my cats, and it was nothing short of loving, caring, and gentle.On the other hand, I saw another vet there who was absolutely terrible at her job (I won't mention her name as a courtesy, and sincerely hope that she will remedy her behavior). She hard-pressed unnecessary medications and services when I strongly expressed that there was no need.I would recommend this place overall (thank you, Dr. Dearie), but do your research! Question everything, and be ready to argue. If you want what's best for your pet, be aware of the clinics' agenda - veterinary medicine (as with any doctor's office) is a sales environment veiled by concern for you or your pet(s). Take the time to find the doctors who are genuine, and develop the ability to differentiate between those who want to help your pet and those who want to fill quotas. Unless you are willing to argue, your bill will go through the roof! Read Less
