I have used this office for years! Recently Dr. Ryan sold the practice to Dr. Kelleher. Initially concerned, I learned that Dr. Ryan intends to stay on for the foreseeable future. It also appears that while there have been some hiccups in the transition, great things are happening with the practice. The office seems to be undergoing a facelift and my most recent visit was a mix of familiar staff who feel like old friends and eager fresh faces who seem thrilled to be part of this team. Dr. Kelleher saw my newest kitten. She was friendly, knowledgeable and seems to be a nice balance to Dr. Ryan. Kudos to her for acquiring such a great business, and yay for the rest of us who seemly will have the best of both worlds. Read Less

Dr Ryan is a good veterinarian. However, his staff is incredibly rude and disrespectful. My previous Golden Retriever had all of his care and even a surgery there to remove fatty deposits. In addition, Dr Ryan cared for my Goffin Cockatoo. We used boarding service annually to go on vacation. We've spend thousands of dollars at this facility. During our summer trip back in 2018 we boarded the bird. When I dropped her off the counter girl and I discussed the boarding. I explained that we would be out of the country and that we would settle the bill upon our return from the trip. I explained that my niece would pick the bird up after 7 days and that I would come in 3 days later to settle the bill. The response was negative and after going to the back the lady came back up front and said that it would be ok. When my niece came to pick up the bird another counter person insisted on trying to collect the bill from my niece. When she explained that we had an arrangement the counter person did not want to hear it. I literally had to call international to speak with Mary who released the bird. After explaining the situation and trying to collect my credit card into the bird was finally released.Three days later I went to the office paid the bill and tried to get an explanation and speak to Dr Ryan who refused to come from the back. The lady said he would call me and that never happened. Several days later we received our pets medical records by mail. It's obvious by the poor grammar that the letter was written by someone other than a Person with a PHD. It stated that since we couldn't agree on terms that it was best for us to look for another vet.Great ... we can give our future pet care to someone who runs their business and cares about their customers rather than deal with a bitchy front office low class individual.A note to Dr Ryan ... Lucky for you that your old and closer to retirement. Otherwise your staff would eventually put you out of business.Read the other reviews.... hint ... the problem isn't your customers. Read Less

Dr. Ryan was fantastic. He's knowledgable and gave great advice. This is why I've given 3 stars.... I wish I could give 5 solely for Dr. Ryan; however, the staff, Mary, specifically, is completely rude and tries to intimidate you. My pet is on medication for his behavior. He's a cocker.... that says it all. I can admit that! However, Mary recommended we put him down because of his temper. This was before recommending medication. Why not actually try all avenues before recommending to kill my pet. We tried medication which has worked wonderfully for my pet. Each time I went to get a refill, never did she review the prescription/label, tell me side effects, or how many more refills I had. Also, I was never informed that my pet needed a physical every year because of being on this specific medication. My pet and I arrived to the facility for vaccinations when I was told he needed I physical because of the medication he was taking. I explained to the tech that was speaking with me that I was never informed of this and only scheduled vaccines... enough time in my schedule to get vaccines and carry on with my plans that day. She proceeded to get Mary (I was seated) who came over to me, towering over me, telling me that my dog needed a physical because of the medication he was on. I said I was never was told this. She said "but you knew he was out of refills". Actually, I expect you as a professional to go over the prescription with me each time I come to pick it up and NO, I was never aware it ran out of refills because I was never TOLD it would/that he needed a physical every year. Hello! Simple COMMUNICATION!!!!!!!!!!!! Mary would gossip with the techs loudly and would say distasteful things about other pets/pet owners. If she was on the phone, she would have an attitude with the person and if put on hold, she'd roll her eyes, sigh deeply, and start running her mouth about the person. COMPLETELY unprofessional. Every time I'd go into the vet with my pet, I felt uneasy. I never knew if I would be intimidated or not. I always felt on edge because it was like I was being judged. Also, every single time I went in to get my pets prescription..... a simple task. It would take at least 15 minutes because something would crash, I would be ignored, or they never filled the prescription (even though I had called at least 24 hours before). Needless to say, I FINALLY took the leap to get out of that vet!!!! I found an amazing vet hospital that was showing nothing but absolute love to my pet and my family. No judging or intimidation! I'm giving a 5 star review to balance the one-star reviews that are really pulling down this practice's profile, and which made me question if I should drive my birds an hour to the only avian diplomate within reasonable driving distance from me.  Now I saw that a lot of the negative reviews were for Dr. Bowles -- the practice now seems to be just Dr. Ryan. In addition, the Google reviews are more numerous and tell a different story.  Today my three birds saw Dr. Ryan and I'd say that it was a positive experience although I am still waiting for the results of some tests.  Dr. Ryan seems knowledgeable and he recommended specific diagnostics based on what he saw.  The costs were presented up front.  He gave me ample time to ask questions.   The staff were friendly and seem capable. All three birds are home and in good condition and spirits, although my older cockatiel, about whom I've been mildly concerned, really showed significant respiratory distress at the office and I'm waiting for radiographs to see if he might have something a lot more serious than I suspected going on.   I'll repost later if my opinion changes, but know that the reviews here don't seem to be the whole story. Dr. Ryan has taken excellent care of my birds and exotics for over 20 years.  I happily travel an hour to bring my pets to him. In the past he has successfully treated our rabbits, birds, a chipmunk, bearded dragon, and a snake.  He successfully removed a large tumor from one of my beloved budgies and has excellent diagnostic skills.  This isn't a vet who orders needless tests to make a buck.  He is caring with the animals and takes time to answer all of my questions. This place was recommended to me twice and when my bird got sick I thought I'd give them a try. I'm sure the doctor is great at treating animals. However, he doesn't answer questions and it seems like it is such an inconvenience for him to see me. I waited a while and when he finally decided to grace us with his presence, he was so rude. He grabbed my bird, looked at her for five minutes and didn't answer any of my questions. I tried to find out what was going on with my pet and he said the nurse will explain and give me a price list. It seems like all they want to do is make money because all they did was push for things that were not needed. He did not explain a thing and the nurses treated me like I was an idiot. I then proceeded to wait another hour for anyone to come talk to me and get my medications. I will never go there again. Read Less

I wish I could leave no stars, because this place deserves nothing. I have never dealt with a business, let alone a veterinary clinic, have such hateful and unprofessional management. I was never a fan of this clinic since my Sister took her cat there to be declawed (which I am not a fan of I should add) and when she brought the cat home she was dead in 24 hours. The doctor had no explanation and offered nothing. My recent encounter was not by choice. I currently have a cat whom I brought in from outside a couple of months ago. She was pregnant and gave birth the kittens yesterday while I was at work. My Son came home from school and saw two of the kittens not doing so well. He panicked and took them away from their Mother to the nearest business to my home (he lost his cell phone), for help. Before contacting me from the store, one of their employees took the kittens, only a few hours old, to Feathers, Tails and Scales. This is bizarre to me, why not call me first? Regardless, at least she told my Son where she was taking them. My Son then called me and told me what happened. I immediately called Feathers, Tails, and Scales to advise of the situation, which the person on the other end was aware of, and let her know I would be coming to pick them up. The person I was speaking to, who later claimed to be the manager, responded with “what?”, I repeated, “I am going to come pick them up”. She then responded, “What? They are gone”. I said, “what do you mean they are gone”. She replied “they are gone”. (pulling teeth at this point). I asked “where did they go”, she said they went to foster care. I then asked when did the kittens get there? She said about 45 minutes ago. I suggested calling the foster program contact and have them bring the kittens back, it’s a misunderstanding and the owner is coming to get them. The Manager advised “ I don’t know where they went, the animals get filtered through to different foster homes. “ I told her “it has been 45 minutes, your telling me they are in foster homes and you don’t know how to contact anyone?” She said “I don’t know who to contact, I am at work and I cannot deal with this right now”, I told her this IS her job, she is the one who contacted the foster program, call them back and ask them to bring the kittens back, she couldn’t do that. So I asked for her superior, then she hung up the phone. It is clear to me that something was done with these 2 kittens and I do not believe it was foster care. I can understand if the kittens were clearly abused or neglected, or were picked up off the side of the road, but this is not the case. This being such a delicate situation you would thing that a “Manager” would be a little more professional. I called back and asked to have the Doctor return my call. Needless to say, no return call. My other children were so upset by this, as well as my Son, who thought he was doing a good thing. Some may have had great experiences with this business, but I would not trust anyone who behaves that way with my furry babies. Read Less

They give him time to settle in before his exam and take their time so they don’t stress him out even more. Not very impressed... the Doctor came in and rinsed his hands with just water before touching my highly contagious sick snake. Then proceeded to use toe nail clippers to pry her mouth open and threw them back in the drawer without even cleaning or sanitizing them first. Who's to say somebody else's snake isn't going to get sick if he uses those same clippers on them? It's dirty and cluttered. I was a new customer and it took me 5 minutes to even get anyone's attention at the front desk. They were all gossiping to each other and paying attention to everything else. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the Doctor prescribed my snake some medicine and it seems to be working. Other than that it wasn't a pleasant visit. Read Less

I keep game birds.  Recently I had a flock die off and birds were getting sick.  Someone recommended this vet because they have 2 board certified avian veterinarians on staff.  I was desperate and wanted to know what to do with my flock to stop the disease.  I called the office and explained that I had a dying bird, and I was hoping that if he was still alive I would have an appointment to give me an idea what to do or if he died, a necropsy.  They gave me the appointment and to my wonder the bird was still alive but gravely ill.  I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I wanted to know what to do to protect my remaining seemingly healthy birds.  I waited forever in the waiting room, and the Doctor was quite nice, but she recognized how sick my bird was (remember I did say that choice A) was a visit choice B) was a necropsy, I knew the bird was very sick.)  I also want to say that I did my research on the birds before going in and I suspected a disease and was treating over the counter, but with my research it was not effective on the species I was raising and a prescription drug was better.  So I was hoping, that this seemingly knowledgeable vet would have the same basic information and help me out.  I was left in the examination for a long time.  They were busy, but none of the patients seemed urgent (mine was indeed dying).  The vet came in, confirmed he was very sick, essentially through up her hands and said she would work some estimates for me.  OK...I would do anything to protect my flock, so I was open.  We noticed the bird had provided a fecal, and I scooped it up for her and assumed, that she would be reading it while I was there.  It's not difficult to look at bacteria under a scope, I've done it professionally so I know the process.  But, NO NO...they send the fecals out.  I have a gravely ill bird, and a dying flock and I have to wait until MONDAY (this was Thursday by the way) for a basic fecal read?  Oh, and BTW: That cost $40.00.  Fecal suspension fluid is not that expensive, believe you me, and it takes just a few minutes to read a flipping fecal. Then, the assistant came back, some little chick with an attitude.  She showed me the estimate and it included a $300.00 xray.  OK...I have a flock of birds dying.  It seems to be viral or bacterial.  It is contagious..Why on earth would I need an xray?  So I asked, very politely...and very professionally.  The girl looks at me and says I swear with a snear...well, I'm not the vet she just told me you needed an estimate.  So she storms out and the vet comes back in.  "I understand you have questions."  Yes, why does my bird need xrays.  I am willing to do hospitalization, I am willing to do blood work.  I am willing to do force feeding.  I want to know what is going on with my birds.  Then the vet, gets snippy with me.  (I swear I was being as patient as I could be).  "You aren't going to find out what is going on with your birds this way, we will only know what is happening to this bird."  OK...well, if it is viral or bacterial, perhaps we can prevent it in my other birds...(Now I was getting so frustrated I was crying).  She told me to take the bird home, give him some medicine and force feed him.  I told her I had never done this before, and she said, "No problem we will show you."  OK...so I held my sick bird...and waited.  About 20 minutes later the assistant came in, and said, "You can go to the front now."  Wait.  What?  You were going to show me how to give this medicine and force feed by bird.  No answer...just escorted to the front.  $125.00 later, I have no answers, I don't know how to force feed this bird...and I have medicine to only treat this one bird and not know what is going on with the rest of my birds.  Today my bird died as expected.  The vet didn't call to check in on the bird or ask me if I had any questions.  I still have to take him in for a necropsy at the Maryland Agriculture Labs.  I'm very, very, very disappointed.  I just don't understand how a veterinarian and their team can be so callous with someone who wants to prevent the spread of disease to her other animals and then take my money without giving me ANY answers or comfort. This vet may be great with Parrots...but save yourself the money if you have flock birds and need some help.  Most frustrating veterinary visit EVER. I have a bittersweet experience with this practice. I'd been going to FS&T for almost a year because of my lizards yeast infection. While Dr. Ryan is incredibly knowledgeable and the staff are kind they are very short staffed and are often rushing around or behind on getting people to their already scheduled appointments. This weekend I went to get a refill on my girl's meds and they were definitely short handed that day. The techs were rushing around and visibly stressed. I got my refill and it wasn't until later that I noticed that the meds were a different color and that they didn't provide me a syringe to administer them with. By the time I noticed it was too late to go back and ask for a syringe so I tried to find one myself. The only one I could find was much too large. I tried to make it work but the dose wasn't correct and my girl overdosed.I called them in a panic the next day at 1:20 but because their weekend hours suck I got no response. To this day they haven't responded to my panicked voicemail. I took my girl to Falls Road Animal Hospital on code red walk in emergency 3 times in 2 days and they were great about getting her immediately looked at. However there was nothing they could do to help her and she passed away in my arms after suffering internal bleeding. FS&T has been alerted about my girl's progression and eventual passing but I still haven't heard back from them.My girl is gone. She was my companion and went everywhere with me. This sudden loss has been absolutely devastating and it's been so hard to move past the experience of watching her die in the way that she did. I won't be returning to this practice and will be switching to falls road when I'm ready for a new bearded dragon.I'm writing this review not out of spite or revenge because I forgive them for their mistake, but I hope that they read this and realize how much of a difference it makes to either increase your staffing or take things more slowly so that important details aren't missed and patients receive the best quality of care possible. If they had taken just a few extra seconds to pay attention my girl would still be alive and with me. Also note to all pet parents: make sure you check your animal's prescriptions before leaving the vet.RIP Nubby. I love you and miss you so much. Read Less

I fought with myself if I should or should not leave this review.  I decided in favor of full disclosure.  I chose this vet because it was on a Thursday that I decided our Booboo, a geriatric parakeet needed to be seen ASAP. Booboo had not been herself for a few days, sitting in a corner of her cage, back to us and barely eating.  There were times that she did eat a little and did come out of the cage, but she wasn't eating her favorite treats and wasn't pigging out which she always did.  I thought I better have her seen before a long weekend.  I called my first choice-Scott Stahl-he wasn't in the office for a week. His associate also wouldn't be in until the following Monday.  Another exotic vet-Dr. Carr was not going to be at her practice till Monday.  I really wanted an avian vet to diagnose her before the weekend so if she needed to be treated  or hospitalized we wouldn't lose any precious time..  So I called FST and was able to get an appt for Friday with Dr. Bowles. The tech that picked up Booboo to weigh her didn't grab her right and Booboo got scared and flew out of her hands.  This was upsetting to me because Booboo was old and sick.  Also the tech weighed her on a regular scale, not the kind birds are weighed on, the kind that has a perch attached.  In came  Dr. Bowles.  She  seemed nice and knowledgable. We discussed options and because of Booboo's  age, I wanted the least invasive procedures done.Dr. Bowles suggested they keep her over the weekend, with antibiotics and in an incubator. I agreed and thought she was in good hands. The following day -Saturday-Dr. Bowles left a message that Booboo was eating the greens in the incubator and seemed to be doing fine,, walking around. My mistake was to agree to allow Booboo to be force fed  (there is another term they used, I forgot it) They insert a syringe of food through the mouth and the food goes right to the crop.  Apparently Dr. Bowles force fed Booboo with no problem.  Then came Sunday.  Sunday is the day Dr. Ryan checks on the animals and treats them.  I was not home when my husband answered the call that night.  It was Dr. Ryan, he said Booboo  passed away of a "heart attack"  When I got home I saw my husband's ashen face.  I would never have guessed it was Booboo, Dr. Bowles message was so upbeat the day before.Booboo seemed to be responding positively.  I was shocked and broken hearted to hear of Booboo' death.  I firmly believe Dr. Ryan may have been rough with feeding Booboo and possibly scared her causing the heart attack. When I went there on Monday to pick up the body, I wanted to know all the details leading up to her death.  Dr. Ryan was very matter of fact and didn't give any more information than "she died of a heart attack."  He was also preoccupied with another matter.   Dr. Bowles was not in that day.  I took the body and cried all the way home.  We buried her in our backyard.  The following day I called Dr. Bowles, who, to her credit was very compassionate.  When I asked her if she thought Dr. Ryan could have been rough with Booboo, she discounted that and told me many stories of Dr. Ryan and his compassion for animals, how he rescued turtles, etc etc.  I  do believe that Dr. Ryan  may have been too rough with Booboo in force feeding.  It is possible he may not have had a good day that day or maybe something else, I don't know.  I just know that she passed after he fed her, and she was doing fine for the 2 days before that.  In retrospect, Booboo was just a little underweight.  I feel that I should not have agreed  for her to be force fed.  She was eating a little on her own, and the antibiotics may have kicked in soon so therefore she may have come around quickly after that and start eating normally.    Needless to say I  will not go back to this vet.. Wish I could give FS&T a better review but I'd be lying. I've been to this place enough times to get a decent feel for it and I've left many times feeling like I've had a bad experience. #1 The women who work in the front office are extremely unprofessional. They are rude, abrupt, catty, and even nasty. I've sat in the waiting area listening to them talk rudely to a customer on the phone and then after hanging up, talk badly about that person. They've been rude to me on multiple occasions. They just can't seem to hold back with their nasty, disproving expressions and rude remarks when they disagree with you. They seem VERY judgmental. #2 Dr. Ryan seems experienced and knowledgeable, and like a nice man. It seems like he could have a great practice there, but that the rest of the staff could be ruining things for him. My impression. #3 The other vet... Dr. Bowles. I could go on and on... I'll try to restrain myself though. I would never trust my animals with her again. She can't seem to see the forest through the trees when it comes to treatment and chooses to not treat animals or even offer /educate pet owners on treatments because of potential negative side effects (even mild ones) of medications! I've been going there for some time, but it keeps getting worse every time I go, so I will take my business elsewhere. I have a parrot and for most parrot owners you know chemicals and harsh smells are bad for them. Their office has become extremely potent with a perfume scent which is bothersome. Also for all my visits they run extremely behind schedule. my appointment was at 12:30 today and they didn't take me back until after 1. The room they put me in reeked of cat poop and bleach! They shut me in there with my bird! I quickly opened the door because the bleach smell was bothering me and I was concerned for my bird. Definitely wouldn't recommend parrot owners to seek treatment there. Read Less

I found a racing pigeon that lost his way and slammed into the window of my work building. They were really sweet about my options. They offered to get him all fixed up and out to a rescue with just a small donation. I liked that they didn't turn me away and stick me with the bill assuming I was the pet's owner. This is a big help to people who find injured animals and need to get them to a vet. I even called the next morning and they were happy to give me an update. We need more vets like this! Read Less

The Dr. Seemed knowledgable, however breif. He left to get a price list and I never met with him again. The nurse came in with the price list. I had a great first experience at FST. We brought in our 20 year old Cockatoo and we were warmly greeted by the receptionist. We barely were in the waiting room when we got ushered back by Barbara who was as kind as can be. She talked with us about our bird and she left and in came Dr Bowles who was very knowledgeable and kind with our bird. She spent a good 15 minutes with us looking her over and answering our questions. She recommended a couple blood tests but said for us to wait 3 months while we got the birds diet in order, I appreciated that. The vet visit charge is very fair for the amount of time the Dr spent with us, we also received a ton of paperwork, print outs and help literature. We were told also that Dr Ryan is a MAJOR bird man and that this particular Vet has 2 of the best Avian vets in the state.  We will be back. **The address on Yelp and on all the listings sites will take you to the old address310 Woodward Dr #3, Westminster, MD 21157fstvet.com(410) 871-0244 Read Less

I dropped my one year old Cavapoo off this morning to get spayed at 8am, and they called me at 9:30 to say she was dead. They have no explanation. Her heart just stopped. My daughter and I went soon after that to the office to say goodbye to our lovable, fluffy little dog. We did get to see her laying there so innocent. It is such a tragedy. She was a good little soul. Later, I received a call from the exact same doctor that operated on my dog, calling me and my dog by name, saying my dog was waking up from surgery and was doing fine and I could pick her up soon. I was speechless......until the doctor realized she had the files mixed up and my dog was still dead. Her words were, "oh my god, I have the wrong file."  Good luck to anyone that leaves their pets in the hands of such an incompetent, unorganized group. Read Less

Drama and unprofessional behaviors are very noticeable within the staff. Also, after communicating 3 times that I did not want a certain test done, I was not charged for the test and paid my full bill at the time of my visit. Well, a week later I received a bill for the unwanted test! There was NO phone call checking to see what was going on with the test, only an outstanding bill sent to me. When I called to inquire about the charge there was NO apology on their end for the mishap. Only "we'll take the charge off the bill". Dr. Ryan is very caring he even donates free time to go to South America to provide care for birds. He was great with my hedgehog and guinea pigs and cats and my sister's dogs and cockatiels. I have known people to travel a good distance to see Dr. Ryan because of his reputation. Feather Scales & Tails works closely with a wildlife rescue facility that my sister and I have volunteered with before. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Bowles saved the life of our cat. She had not been eating and acting strange, and we took her to FST and upon examination we had discovered that she was jaundiced. Further testing revealed that she had a serious case of pancreatitis. All the steps that FST from took from the first visit were undertaken very quickly and efficiently, and every step, medication, and process was explained to us thoroughly and in simple enough language that we could understand. Our girl made a full recovery. We live around 30 minutes out, and they are still our preferred vets. The staff here is unfriendly and they do not put the care of the animal first. Yes, they're the only place in the area that sees exotics, which is the only reason why I will walk into their doors. I brought my puppy here for her regular vet visit, and when she became sick. They gave me medicine, but did not label what the medication was. She got even more sick, and I decided to go to another vet after hearing horror stories of FST. That vet tried contacting FST for her file information since there was no info on what medications she was on, and they refuse to send her file to the new vet. We cannot continue her treatment without the knowledge of what those medicines were. All I know is one said "cough medicine". What would happen if she ate the bottle, and we had no idea what to tell poison control? They also missed a major diagnosis, and when I called them to ask about her symptoms, they told me "puppies cough," and hung up on me after putting me on hold for twenty minutes. They don't have a desk person... they're all techs. You can be on hold on the phone for a half hour as they deal with an animal. The place is drab... looks run down. Exam rooms are dirty. I've had to pick other dog's fur off my dog before. They can't even weigh the dog correctly... they had her on a baby scale, then a bird scale. Don't you think it would be easier to have her sit on the bigger scale? That's what everywhere else does. We're working with a possible collapsed trachea and really bad coughing. The vet didn't even check her throat or ask if her cough was a goose honk. For your sanity and your pet's safety, please don't use FST.

Read Less

Dr. Ryan is a good doctor.  Dr. Bowles is cold, incompetent, unknowledgeable and seems to have the compassion and customer service skills of a neanderthal.  NEVER trust this heartless person with your animal, if you love or even like your animal or even if you don't like your animal - do not let her touch or even look at your animal.  Crossing paths with this joke of a vet will likely result in delayed proper care and treatment of your animal. Please, for the love of your faithful companion, do not see Dr. Bowles.  I have lost two animals under her care. Once at this clinic after another doctor in Gaithersburg misdiagnosed her and Bowles was careless  just because she was a pet chicken, and another pet at an emergency hospital in Maryland where I recognized her and immediately felt doom, wanting to immediately remove my pet from her carelessness but it was too late.KEEP YOUR PET FAR AWAY FROM HER and her evil helpers.

Read Less

Then today I called back to make another appointment and the receptionist was a total hateful snot and actually made fun of the way I spell my ferrets name and said it's ridiculous. Don't expect thorough treatment options from her. Overall, Dr. Ryan seems outnumbered by negative and inept forces there. This vet practice could be much better with a heavy weeding. Read Less
