Kindness Animal Hospital

Wheaton, Maryland
General Info
Kindness Animal Hospital, founded in 1956, is one of the oldest small animal veterinary hospitals in Montgomery County, MD. We provide high-quality medical, dental, and surgical care, and we believe that preventive medicine is the best medicine. We also have a groomer, who is available by appointment Monday through Friday.
Every three years, we undergo a thorough evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), which is the only organization in the United States that accredits small animal veterinary practices for dedication to high standards of care. We are proud to be among the 15% of veterinary practices accredited through AAHA.
We have six veterinarians on staff, all of whom place a priority on the doctor-client relationship as we feel that this special partnership serves your pet best. While we primarily practice traditional medicine, we also offer acupuncture, which can provide relief from many chronic and acute conditions; please visit http://kindnesshospital.com/acu/acu.html for more information.

I highly recommend this animal hospital. Everyone there - the front desk crew, the vet techs, groomers - they are wonderful. Dr. Z. is my dog's primary doctor, but we have seen other vets in the practice occasionally, and they're lovely, too. I take my dog here for regular checkups and semi-regular nail trims. He has also had surgery (dental work) here. My dog was ~ 4 - 5 years old when I got him, and his teeth and gums were bad. Dr. Z recommended a deep cleaning and possibly extractions. He called me after reviewing the x-rays, and I thought he was bonkers when he told me how many teeth needed to come out. But I said yes, and the results were astonishing. Even though Boo had not seemed sick or in pain before his dental surgery, he was a different dog after it. Happier, playful, energetic, more affectionate. It hurts me to know that he had become so accustomed to pain that he didn't even bother to cry about it. And I'm eternally grateful to the folks at Kindness for taking care of him and healing his pain. Read Less

I'm so thankful that I found this place!  They went out of the way to fit me in after finding out my dog was suffering and in its last moments of life.  Marcia (Office mgr.) met me at my car and gave me a much needed hug.  Went out of her way to show grieving stranger love and compassion.  Let me cry on her shoulder until I gathered my composer.   She carried Buddy into the office with employee David.  Marcia was there for me throughout the terrible news of the exam.  Dr. Zolkewicz was was humble and compassionate about this sad visit.  He was just as concerned about my well being also.  He put me at ease about this sad decision.  As busy as they were Marcia kept on checking in on me bringing me water and tissues.   The staff here was a God send during this difficult time. God Bless each and everyone of you, I will forever be thankful for your acts of love and compassion! Read Less

While I have not physically had my puppy seen here yet,  this review is based on a call inquiring about their services. I spoke with Brandon who was very personable, informative, and professional. He answered all of my questions about their scheduling process and purchasing food for my new puppy. My sincerest thanks to him for being  polite and answering some of my (pretty obvious) questions and genuinely making me feel welcome as a customer. I've checked out a few places in the area but not many made me feel as welcome and confident in a business as Brandon was able to over the phone. Will be in soon! Read Less

One of the worst places I've ever gone to for vet-related services. 1. They lack follow-through and say they are going to do something, when in fact, they don't. You have to call them several times to actually have something done. 2. The vets themselves are a waste of time. They barely examine your pet, and are basically implementing care that MD's provide (i.e., 2 minutes maximum per client). 3. They don't even carry basic meds that most other vets carry. They offer to write a written prescription for you, but that's about it. All in all, this place is a waste of time. I would avoid at all costs. Read Less

I would like to commend Dr. Jeff Zolkiewicz DVM, and the staff at Kindness Animal Hospital for their patience and thoroughness, getting my dog, Aero, ready for an international flight. They were exact, understood the tedious process and reams of documents necessary for exit from this country and entrance into Ireland. The entire process went very smoothly and Aero arrived without a hitch to her new home! I would definitely recommend Kindness if you are flying your animal, even if they are not your regular vet. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is, to have a vet that is familiar and successful with the process. Read Less

Heartless non caring greedy crooks. This is the most badly named business ive ever heard of.There are geese that live across the street from this vet. they cross University Blvd 6 lanes of traffic, close to Georgia Avenue every day. Today I saw one get clipped by a car just ahead of me right in front of this so called get clinic. he was still walking but limping badly and in obvoius pain. i stopped my car in the turning lane and atopped oncoming rushimg traffic to avoid killing this adorable creature. I calmly and frimly walked up to the goose annd picked him up gently supporting his wings but pinning them to his side sonhe would not flutter and do further harm.  he didn't resist and didn't try to bite me and was surprisingly calm.  It was like knew knew exactly what I was doing for him. I walked the 25 feet to the get entrance (how convenient was that!!) and was relieved to see that the vet was at the counter.  I told her what happened real quick. she  pointed at the door said "get that animal out of here I cannot touch wild animals."!!  I said what what am I supposed to do with it? "call Animal Control." She yelled. I said "you of that you call Animal Control" I set the goose on her Lobby floor and she started screaming something at me to get it out of there bit i was done with that heartless B**ch. I would never  come to this place and deal with this unkind filthy pig of a vet.PS...I call them crooks because when we got 2 kittens a couple years ago we of course went here first because we live a half mile away. They are the highest peiced vet clinic in the country. No joke. I have been to vets all my life and their rayes are by far the highest for simple stuff. I notice most of their business is thr first generation immigrants who are 90% of the population of the Wheaton area. We drive past this place on our way to our vet who is awesome and even makes house calls....CHEAPER than these crooks. Read Less

I had a nasty experience here. I had just moved to Maryland a few days before. A much larger dog of the friend who I was initially staying with when I first moved had bit my dog across the back and shook her. My dog had no puncture wounds but I could tell she was in pain as she had difficulty getting up and walking and appeared to have tears in her eyes. My college roommate is a vet and she recommended I take my dog in to be seen so I took her to this clinic because it was close by and my friend recommended it. The woman on the front desk threw a fit that I didn't bring my dog's vet records with me, which were somewhere in one of my packing boxes, she planted her hands on her hip and informed me that she would have to contact the state because I didn't provide proof of rabies vaccination, which was heard by an entire waiting room full of people. (My dog is chipped and she refused to contact my former vet's office - I informed her she should do whatever she was required to do but my dog needed to be seen). My dog was seen by the staff but they were quite skittish in their examination. Apparently, that area of Maryland is rife with rabid house pets. I never returned as I require a more customer-serviced-based demeanor to both front desk and professional staff. Read Less

I am so happy I found Kindness Animal Hospital. I'm pretty picky about my pets and I want the best for them so I did my research. I found out they are up to date with the latest equipment, such as an ultrasound, which Dr. Z is very good at performing (other hospitals actually send patients to Kindness sometimes to get an ultrasound), and a laser that is the same as human athletes use, and the veterinarians and staff there are concerned about pain management and comfort of my dog. Every time I go in for my dog's yearly exam they ask me about the vaccines and do not do unnecessary vaccines. I feel like they do cost a little bit more but they are worth it because they do such a great job and I am 100% sure my pets are getting the very best care and I am comfortable with them. Read Less

I was in there Tuesday which prompted my review. I can't say enough good things about this animal hospital. I moved here about a year ago from Frederick, MD and was looking for a closer vet for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. With this many pets, we have a pretty close relationship with the vet!! So our vet in Frederick recommended Kindness and I'm glad they did. I have seen the owner, Dr. Zolkewicz and Dr. Moore and Dr. Hoffield and I like them all. Dr. Z (as he is known as) is able to strike that balance of being fun and also professional at the same time. I always know he cares about my pets and wants the best for them. He performs ultrasound, is concerned about pain, and they have a laser there that has helped my arthritic lab immensely!! No drugs and his pain is less and he is more mobile. When I call there, I get a call back within the same day. I find the prices at Kindness to be extremely reasonable- I'm getting a lot for my dollar!! I have never written a review before but I was scrolling through something else and it led me here. This is the animal hospital I bring my pets to and I wouldn't bring them anywhere else. First of all, the front desk staff is nice, they are easy to talk to, and they are professional. The nurse that brings my dog into the room is fun and you can tell that all of them really like pets. There are several doctors here and my 2 favorites are Dr. Zolk and Dr. Moore, although I've seen them all and had good experiences with them all. Dr. Zolk has seen me through my share of crazy problems with my dog and he is always professional and caring. He diagnoses the problem, talks to me, and takes time to answer questions. I have never felt he was just looking for my dollar. He truly cares about the animals. He is up to date on the latest and doesn't recommend things that aren't needed- he has a reason for recommending the things he does. My cat is mainly seen by Dr. Moore and she is also kind and knowledgable. I once saw a pet rushed in on emergency (had been hit by a car out front) and the staff immediately brought the pet in and worked on it, without even knowing the owner. I think the prices they have are reasonable if you consider what you are getting- a kind veterinarian who knows what he is talking about, pain control when needed, and excellent service! Read Less

Things progressively got worst with regards to service. We showed up on time for our appointment and on average would have to wait 45 minutes before we were attended. Our latest visit, the administrative staff paged her 3 times over 25 minutes. At the 26th minute I offered to get her myself. Once she showed up I didnt even get an apology for her tardiness. Service now, when it is provided, is par, nothing to 'write home' about. The cost of the visit is ~300/dog ! Instead, they left him with the son of one of the vets -- who is NOT a licensed vet technician and was there without any supervision. ""Kindness Animal Hospital's veterinarian-owner, Marc Katz, was found in Violation of the Veterinary Practice Act by the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners in a case involving my cat, Toonces. THIS IS A MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD, Maryland Docket 05-005. He was fined, placed on probation, and had his license suspended (although the suspension was ""stayed""). Dr. Katz left my cat in the care of his son -- instead of a licensed veterinary technician. His son used the wrong syringe to give my cat his insulin (according to their own admissions) and subsequently my cat was found hypoglycemic and having massive seizures -- classic symptoms of an insulin overdose! They never even called me to tell me what was going on -- instead, they dropped Toonces off at another hospital and left a note saying if my cat died they would come back to pick up his dead body the next day! In my opinion, they are dishonest, negligent, and incompetent. My cat was dramatically brain damaged when he left there, and never EVER recovered -- his injuries cost me thousands of dollars, but more importantly heartbreak and pain having to watch my poor Toonces live with this severe brain damage. If you love your pets, I beg you not to take them here!"" Read Less

Kindness and especially Dr. Marc Katz have been treating all my animals for 8 years. Dr. Katz saved my dying dog when he was in a diabetic coma. He has taken excellent care of all my pets and I cannot recomend him highly enough. I recently saw a negative comment with someone dissatisfied with the service. The only possible thing I can imagine anyone complaining about are the fees. People accustomed to cut rate pet care might be annoyed at the fees at Kindness but this hospital is truly an example of ""you get what you pay for"". Kindness has a special accrediation for excellence awarded to only 14% of all animal hospitals in the country. When I have run in the front door with an emergency situation the staff spring into action that I have never seen anywhere except on TV shows. All the staff are highly trained and completely professional. All of the vets are excellent but Dr. Katz in particular is outstanding in the care he gives. I can only hope that anyone who may place a negative comment on this side about either Dr. Katz or Kindness Hospital will take the time to read my review. Read Less

Kindness Animal Hospital

Wheaton, Maryland
(46)
2130 University Boulevard West
Wheaton Maryland 20902

Never trust these people. I would not send my worst enemy to this place. I wish them on NO ONE and believe the lives of their patients are at risk. Read Less

Read Less

Dr. Katz saved a cat of mine over a dozen years ago, not even knowing whose cat he was or if he would ever get paid. I drive past many vets to go to Kindness and highly recommend them.

Left me feeling a lack of confidence in their staff. Rude front desk staff. Seem disorganized. The people don't seem to know what they are doing.
