I have to say, I am so disappointed in this Veterinary Hospital. I had been taking my 14 year old cat to this vet since we moved here in Acton 3 years ago. This past Monday, May 15th, I brought my cat in because he had lost a lot of weight, and he really wasn't cleaning himself very well because he had stains around his mouth and front paws. I surmised this to be the cause of old age. I attempted to clean his face and paws with a warm towel when I noticed that his two thumb paws appeared to be ingrown or swollen. I was afraid that he was actually bleeding and that was the stains that appeared around his mouth and feet. When I brought him in, Dr. Johnston immediately started trimming his nails, then started to rip through some of his mats. She took him to the back to do this and all I could hear was him crying out each time she ripped through his hair. Then she took a blood sample to check his kidney levels. All of these procedures could and should have been avoided if she had just investigated the reason for his stained mouth and paws. After she had unnecessarily tortured my cat, she informed me that he had a tumor under his tongue and that was most likely why he had stains around his mouth and feet. She said that older cats are prone to getting these tumors under their tongues and there really isn't any successful treatment. She said that he had 2 weeks to 2 months to live, which was a complete over statement. If she had taken into account that he had lost 30% of his weight and that the size of the tumor was the most obvious reason for his overall weight loss, stained face and feet (apparently, he had been drooling excessively, another symptom caused by the tumor) She should have known better and informed me that he could be go any day. She said to observe him to see how he is eating. Once he is unable to eat, then it would be time to put him down.By Wednesday, my cat could not get the pureed wet food past his tongue. He kept trying to eat, but the food never disappeared from his bowl. There really was no point in feeding him liquified food through a tube, because there was no way his prognosis would improve. I would only be delaying the inevitable and putting him through a tedious scenario that he did not need to go through. I called the vet that Wednesday night and left a message, apparently their phone doesn't receive voicemails. I didn't realize that. When I called the next morning, around 10:00am, I had explained to Tiffany that my cat really wasn't doing well and I didn't want him to suffer any longer. She asked if I was sure about putting him down that day? What an absurd question to ask someone who is struggling with this decision to begin with!!!!I think she asked this question because it really wasn't convenient for the Vet that day because they were swamped with an emergency and other appointments. The only time I could come in would be Thursday night at 5:30pm. I really didn't want to have to wait that long because I would then have to have my kids with me which would have been too hard for all of us.I went back and forth trying to figure something out. The receptionist was not as compassionate as I would have liked given that I was about to lose a member of our family who had been with us for 14 years. I asked that the Vet call me. She never did. Which in my book is so awful. They will call back when they know that they can make money on you somehow. By 1:00, I had taken him to Westford Animal Hospital Emergency, westfordveterinary.com. One of the best decisions I made. They were compassionate understanding and knew right away that my cat was sick and had been for a while. Needless to say, I have requested to have my remaining animal's, records transferred to Family and Friends Veterinary Hospital in Boxborough. A decision I should have made a long time ago. Read Less
