General Info
Located in historic Amesbury, MA, the Amesbury Animal Hospital is a full-service mixed animal hospital. Since 1967, we have been committed to providing quality veterinary care for both large and small animals. We provide Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire communities with routine medical, surgical and dental veterinary care as well as herd health and emergency services.
Amesbury Animal Hospital was established in 1967 by Dr. Robert A. Marston. Dr. Thomas C. Candee joined the practice in 1970. Originally, the practice serviced over twenty local dairies and provided veterinary care for other livestock, horses and companion animals as well. Over the years, the number of dairy farms in the area has slowly diminished, but our practice continues to provide the highest quality veterinary care for both our large and small animal patients. In 1991, Dr. Kirk T. Smith joined us. Dr. Jacqueline L. Bastien joined the practice in 1994, but had been a veterinary technician here for seven years prior to graduating from veterinary school. Both share large and small animal duties with our two associates: Dr. Sarah C. Grossman and Dr. Beth A. Pelletier. Dr. Marston retired from active practice in 2002, but he still stops by from time to time to visit.
The past forty years has brought a lot of changes to our practice, but our compassion and dedication to our patients has remained constant. For our small animal patients, we offer comprehensive wellness exams, preventative medicine including vaccinations, parasite control and senior screening, surgical services, dentistry and emergency services. Our facility includes in-house laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, ultrasound and endoscopy capabilities.
For our large animal patients, we provide ambulatory routine healthcare including vaccinations and parasite control, herd health services, lameness examinations, pre-purchase exams, equine dentistry and emergency services. We have portable radiology and ultrasound equipment available as well as our in-house laboratory and pharmacy services.
Our doctors and staff are experienced and caring, and several of our staff members have been with us over twenty years. We currently employ two certified veterinary technicians, 10-12 other employees as technicians, receptionists, laboratory staff and animal care assistants.

This vet was very disappointing! We switched to this vet after moving and much research. We even called AAH in order to touch base with them on a few particular points concerning my special needs dog....
This vet was very disappointing! We switched to this vet after moving and much research. We even called AAH in order to touch base with them on a few particular points concerning my special needs dog. Every single bit of information that I received on the phone from them was a lie. Every single time we had an appointment there for ANY of our five animals we had to wait a half an hour to an hour. One time we waited for over an hour and ended up just rescheduling the appt. Another time we waited for 45 mins for a tech to cut one of our dogs nails! We had a scheduled appt. for that nail trim too.Our most recent incident we were 7 mins late as my dog wouldn't go to the bathroom before we went in. I was then told that we were going to have to wait a while because we were late!!! On top of not getting calls back when we were supposed to, unprofessional service, and misinformation at every turn. We saw a different Dr. every time that we had an appt. Awful experience.We are going back to our vet that is a half an hour away. Definitely would NOT recommend this vet.

Our kitty is a new patient at AAH. Based on positive word of mouth reviews we selected Amesbury Aninal Hospital. Our kitty means the world to us and we dont not take his care options lightly. AAH impressed us from top to bottom. Staff at all points of contact were great. Did not feel pressured for more types of treatment options than necessary. Prices felt fair. So pleased to have AAH as our local vet practice.

This is an esthetically clean environment, the staff is nice BUT their prices are crazy-over-the-top. I have three dogs and by all standards, they are well taken care of. They have routine wellness visits, dental cleanings, flea and tick prevention, etc . . . I was taking all 3 dogs here and spending allot of money at each visit. Always seemed to be "extras" and/or "additional fees" added on to the original quoted price for each visit or procedure (without fail). I recently brought one of my dogs in for a routine dental cleaning, however, I got a call from the office saying that my dog needed a procedure (gum surgery), they gave me an estimated price over the phone . . . a low and a high quote. I agreed to do the procedure since he was already under anesthesia. Once again, the bill was high but this time the bill was beyond the high side and they didn't even clean my dog's teeth. Ridiculous ! I've had enough of their unreasonable pricing and misleading "low-high quotes" . . . I have since found another Veterinary facility who has a far more reasonable pricing scale that doesn't take advantage of pet owners; their staff is very friendly and genuinely concerned for the well being of the pets who pass through there. Unless you're willing to pay the highest prices for your pet care, stay clear of Amesbury Animal Hospital.

I love this place! Recently, we had to put my mothers 17 year old cat down due to illness, Before and during the procedure. I was a mess! The staff was so kind and compassionate. I wasn't rushed for anything. When I broke down at the reception desk. I was told "take your time" even the vet had tears in her eyes upon seeing my distress. I would highly recommend bringing your beloved animals to these wonderful people. I want to thank them for their kindness. And Jinx my mothers cat? They couldn't have been gentler with him than if he was their own cat. (Tuesday, he was their cat) On a happier note. We also bring our dog Bella there where she's treated like a queen. I want Thank you, thank you all for your compassion, your kindness and for your genuine care and love for our furry family members

I can't say enough good about the Animal Hospital ... all of their vets are amazing ... their office staff and techs are great. Years ago Dr. Smith treated my horse for a disease of unknown origin, Dr. Smith went above and beyond to try to help my horse to the extent of coming to the barn and bringing specialist to see my horse on his own time at no charge to me as he just wanted to figure out what was going on and how to help us out. I have used him for about 15 years now and I have never had a single bad experience or complaint of any form in all that time.

One of the things I really appreciate about them is their honesty. If they think you should do something, then they will suggest it. If not, they won't. Plus they do farm calls. They've treated our dogs, cats and horses. They've always done it professionally, beyond competently and with a great deal of caring and compassion. We have every confidence in all of the docs and staff at Amesbury.

Dr. Anderson is incredibly knowledgeable and has a great "bedside" manner with people and animals alike. He examined one of our goats on an emergency basis amd handled our situation with patience and professionalism. I had my young daughter with me and he explained everything in simple terms in order to ease her fears. He even made a follow up call a few days later to check in. I would trust every aspect of my animals' care to Dr. Anderson and the rest of the staff at Amesbury Animal Hospital.

I can't say enough good things about Amesbury Animal Hospital. Recently we had to have one our kitties put to sleep. InUnfortunately this was not the first time we had to do this. However all of the staff at Amesbury Animal Hospital made such a hard thing so much more bearable. Especially Dr. Stephanie. She is without a doubt the most sympathetic, sincere and caring vet I have ever dealt with. Her compassion in all my dealings with her was simply incredible. I feel so lucky to have found this vet. They were recommended by my neighbor. We had a cremation done and the final results were beautiful. Then a week later we received a memorial card. A tree had been planted in memory of our kitty. Unbelievable. Thank you so much to Dr. Stephanie and all of the staff. What a team.

I can not thank the staff and Dr Grossman enough! My cat has been experiencing some symptoms and I called to make an appointment- today I dropped off a urine sample at 2:30 - by 3 they had called me and eased my fears by telling me it was a UTI .. They further offered to get me his medicine right away so that I can start him immediately. Their dedication to their patients is amazing and they have a customer for life! I recently transferred my chocolate lab (Rusty) to this animal hospital and we had a great experience. The practice we used for several years got a new Dr. who just wasn't for us. So we went out on a limb to find a new Vet and picked Amesbury Animal Hospital. We are so happy we did!! Just want to say thank you to all the staff for making a smooth transition!! They got us right in, everyone was super friendly, and the environment was relaxed and comfortable. I just received a call from Laura to check up on Rusty. The follow up was a reassurance that we made the right choice! Thank you

First let me say the vets are incredible and caring about the pets. That's where anything good ends.I took my dog in for an emergency. I was told he would need surgery. The price all totalled 2500-300...
First let me say the vets are incredible and caring about the pets. That's where anything good ends.I took my dog in for an emergency. I was told he would need surgery. The price all totalled 2500-3000. I asked about care credit and/ or payment plan which they would do neither. So now I have my dog that needs emergency attention, but they won't do anything until the bill is paid. I decided to take him somewhere else for a second opinion...but of course had to have the 600. Paid before that! So what is a person to do in this situation? What kind of people are they to basically hold a SICK dog hostage? I'd like to think that when my dog is getting veterinary care, that those treating him are looking out for his overall health and well-being. Apparently the management of Amesbury hospital are not animal lovers and are more interested in paying for that new building and their salaries.Oh a positive side...after getting my dog out of their clutches and to a different vet...and waiting, I'd like to add for almost an hour for Amesbury animal to send over the xrays and reports it turns out he DIDN'T need surgery after all.My advice to anyone going to Amesbury Animal hospital....if you love your pet...then just don't!

Dr. Kirk and staff took such good care of my "grey ghost". They explained everything they did for him and I know that they really cared. What a tremendous place. I would recommend to anyone.

I was then told that we were going to have to wait a while because we were late!!! On top of not getting calls back when we were supposed to, unprofessional service, and misinformation at every turn. We saw a different Dr. every time that we had an appt. Awful experience.We are going back to our vet that is a half an hour away. Definitely would NOT recommend this vet.

Our kitty is a new patient at AAH. Based on positive word of mouth reviews we selected Amesbury Aninal Hospital. Our kitty means the world to us and we dont not take his care options lightly. AAH impressed us from top to bottom. Staff at all points of contact were great. Did not feel pressured for more types of treatment options than necessary. Prices felt fair. So pleased to have AAH as our local vet practice.

This is an esthetically clean environment, the staff is nice BUT their prices are crazy-over-the-top. I have three dogs and by all standards, they are well taken care of. They have routine wellness visits, dental cleanings, flea and tick prevention, etc . . . I was taking all 3 dogs here and spending allot of money at each visit. Always seemed to be "extras" and/or "additional fees" added on to the original quoted price for each visit or procedure (without fail). I recently brought one of my dogs in for a routine dental cleaning, however, I got a call from the office saying that my dog needed a procedure (gum surgery), they gave me an estimated price over the phone . . . a low and a high quote. I agreed to do the procedure since he was already under anesthesia. Once again, the bill was high but this time the bill was beyond the high side and they didn't even clean my dog's teeth. Ridiculous ! I've had enough of their unreasonable pricing and misleading "low-high quotes" . . . I have since found another Veterinary facility who has a far more reasonable pricing scale that doesn't take advantage of pet owners; their staff is very friendly and genuinely concerned for the well being of the pets who pass through there. Unless you're willing to pay the highest prices for your pet care, stay clear of Amesbury Animal Hospital.

I love this place! Recently, we had to put my mothers 17 year old cat down due to illness, Before and during the procedure. I was a mess! The staff was so kind and compassionate. I wasn't rushed for anything. When I broke down at the reception desk. I was told "take your time" even the vet had tears in her eyes upon seeing my distress. I would highly recommend bringing your beloved animals to these wonderful people. I want to thank them for their kindness. And Jinx my mothers cat? They couldn't have been gentler with him than if he was their own cat. (Tuesday, he was their cat) On a happier note. We also bring our dog Bella there where she's treated like a queen. I want Thank you, thank you all for your compassion, your kindness and for your genuine care and love for our furry family members

I can't say enough good about the Animal Hospital ... all of their vets are amazing ... their office staff and techs are great. Years ago Dr. Smith treated my horse for a disease of unknown origin, Dr. Smith went above and beyond to try to help my horse to the extent of coming to the barn and bringing specialist to see my horse on his own time at no charge to me as he just wanted to figure out what was going on and how to help us out. I have used him for about 15 years now and I have never had a single bad experience or complaint of any form in all that time.

The Vet was so tender and sweet to JOJO, it made us feel so much better, knowing we were doing the right thing for this very special part of our family. We had never been there before but felt like they took us in their fold. I would bring any animal I own to them and highly recommend them to my friends and family.

days, nights, hard times, good times, the caring folks at the Amesbury Animal Hospital have always been there for us. They have a tremendously caring staff and skilled practitioners. One of the things I really appreciate about them is their honesty. If they think you should do something, then they will suggest it. If not, they won't. Plus they do farm calls. They've treated our dogs, cats and horses. They've always done it professionally, beyond competently and with a great deal of caring and compassion. We have every confidence in all of the docs and staff at Amesbury.

Dr. Anderson is incredibly knowledgeable and has a great "bedside" manner with people and animals alike. He examined one of our goats on an emergency basis amd handled our situation with patience and professionalism. I had my young daughter with me and he explained everything in simple terms in order to ease her fears. He even made a follow up call a few days later to check in. I would trust every aspect of my animals' care to Dr. Anderson and the rest of the staff at Amesbury Animal Hospital.

I can't say enough good things about Amesbury Animal Hospital. Recently we had to have one our kitties put to sleep. InUnfortunately this was not the first time we had to do this. However all of the staff at Amesbury Animal Hospital made such a hard thing so much more bearable. Especially Dr. Stephanie. She is without a doubt the most sympathetic, sincere and caring vet I have ever dealt with. Her compassion in all my dealings with her was simply incredible. I feel so lucky to have found this vet. They were recommended by my neighbor. We had a cremation done and the final results were beautiful. Then a week later we received a memorial card. A tree had been planted in memory of our kitty. Unbelievable. Thank you so much to Dr. Stephanie and all of the staff. What a team.

They further offered to get me his medicine right away so that I can start him immediately. Their dedication to their patients is amazing and they have a customer for life! I recently transferred my chocolate lab (Rusty) to this animal hospital and we had a great experience. The practice we used for several years got a new Dr. who just wasn't for us. So we went out on a limb to find a new Vet and picked Amesbury Animal Hospital. We are so happy we did!! Just want to say thank you to all the staff for making a smooth transition!! They got us right in, everyone was super friendly, and the environment was relaxed and comfortable. I just received a call from Laura to check up on Rusty. First let me say the vets are incredible and caring about the pets. That's where anything good ends.I took my dog in for an emergency. I was told he would need surgery. The price all totalled 2500-3000. I asked about care credit and/ or payment plan which they would do neither. So now I have my dog that needs emergency attention, but they won't do anything until the bill is paid. I decided to take him somewhere else for a second opinion...but of course had to have the 600. Paid before that! So what is a person to do in this situation? What kind of people are they to basically hold a SICK dog hostage? I'd like to think that when my dog is getting veterinary care, that those treating him are looking out for his overall health and well-being. Apparently the management of Amesbury hospital are not animal lovers and are more interested in paying for that new building and their salaries.Oh a positive side...after getting my dog out of their clutches and to a different vet...and waiting, I'd like to add for almost an hour for Amesbury animal to send over the xrays and reports it turns out he DIDN'T need surgery after all.My advice to anyone going to Amesbury Animal hospital....if you love your pet...then just don't!

Dr. Kirk and staff took such good care of my "grey ghost". They explained everything they did for him and I know that they really cared. What a tremendous place. I would recommend to anyone.
