I almost never take reviews too seriously. And I never run even when the reviews say run away. But the choices and priorities made by the staff here turned something that was treatable into something deadly. We took our cat into the vet two weeks ago, we were told she had a UTI and maybe she had diabetes- we had a hard time believing this but we wish you had been firm with us. We had no experience or knowledge that she could go DKA. We didn’t even know what DKA was. The recommendation was to treat the UTI and come back for a test for diabetes afterwards. The emergency team at VEG and staff at Angell Memorial let us know that the priority order of treating the UTI first instead of confirming and controlling diabetes was absolutely the wrong call. Unfortunately, we didn’t talk to VEG or Angell until after we had taken her back to Fresh Pond Animal Hospital- after she had been puking all day- big water pukes. Our cat- who if she had been seen by a competent team would have recognized she was in full blown DKA. Their technicians need extra training for this and the doctors should have checked in on the confirmed diabetic who they had been alerted was extremely sick and not eating at that point. Instead they sent us home to try and encourage her to eat and start her insulin. Another wrong call-she needed to be hospitalized immediately. They recommended that we wait two more days (until Weds) to take her in to get a sonogram if she was still not eating. We did not take that advice and we took her to VEG that night. After going all in, throwing thousands of dollars towards helping her, and four days of critical care hospitalization including transferring her to specialists at Angell memorial, she passed away from pancreas and liver complications compounded with DKA. We were told that if the treatment of diabetes had taken priority over a UTI, which the UTI medication caused her system to spiral, she could still be here. She was an undiagnosed diabetic until a couple of days before her death and she was 9 years old. Their team needs a real review of how they treat their patients. Especially for recognizing what was a really easy to recognize critical case. They should warn and be firm about the real complications of potential illnesses like DKA. And I don’t know if it was ignorance or complacency, but the doctors at Fresh Pond did not give this case the attention it deserved. And their techs had no indication that she was critical despite all the information we gave them. I called and shared this information of her complications and passing with their staff, they told me the doctor would call back. But despite the doctor calling us a “team” four days ago, they haven’t called back yet. Nor do I want to hear from them. If I had taken her to a different vet, she would still be alive.
