I almost never take reviews too seriously. And I never run even when the reviews say run away. But the choices and priorities made by the staff here turned something that was treatable into something deadly. We took our cat into the vet two weeks ago, we were told she had a UTI and maybe she had diabetes- we had a hard time believing this but we wish you had been firm with us. We had no experience or knowledge that she could go DKA. We didn’t even know what DKA was. The recommendation was to treat the UTI and come back for a test for diabetes afterwards. The emergency team at VEG and staff at Angell Memorial let us know that the priority order of treating the UTI first instead of confirming and controlling diabetes was absolutely the wrong call. Unfortunately, we didn’t talk to VEG or Angell until after we had taken her back to Fresh Pond Animal Hospital- after she had been puking all day- big water pukes. Our cat- who if she had been seen by a competent team would have recognized she was in full blown DKA. Their technicians need extra training for this and the doctors should have checked in on the confirmed diabetic who they had been alerted was extremely sick and not eating at that point. Instead they sent us home to try and encourage her to eat and start her insulin. Another wrong call-she needed to be hospitalized immediately. They recommended that we wait two more days (until Weds) to take her in to get a sonogram if she was still not eating. We did not take that advice and we took her to VEG that night. After going all in, throwing thousands of dollars towards helping her, and four days of critical care hospitalization including transferring her to specialists at Angell memorial, she passed away from pancreas and liver complications compounded with DKA. We were told that if the treatment of diabetes had taken priority over a UTI, which the UTI medication caused her system to spiral, she could still be here. She was an undiagnosed diabetic until a couple of days before her death and she was 9 years old. Their team needs a real review of how they treat their patients. Especially for recognizing what was a really easy to recognize critical case. They should warn and be firm about the real complications of potential illnesses like DKA. And I don’t know if it was ignorance or complacency, but the doctors at Fresh Pond did not give this case the attention it deserved. And their techs had no indication that she was critical despite all the information we gave them. I called and shared this information of her complications and passing with their staff, they told me the doctor would call back. But despite the doctor calling us a “team” four days ago, they haven’t called back yet. Nor do I want to hear from them. If I had taken her to a different vet, she would still be alive. And that’s something I can never amend. I’m also posting this here, as it looks like they remove reviews. Read Less

Have been using Fresh Pond Animal Hospital for >20 years with our first and then current dog. Dr. Perkins is one of the most gentle people, and vet, I've encountered for my pets. She listens, is open to discussing treatment plans (and costs and rationale), and is never judgmental about YOUR decision. my cat was my world, and when she had a visit, she was their's too. I couldn't think of going anywhere else. It's been a few months since my cat's passing, and per suggestion, I rescued a new one. I brought Maggie in to be spayed, and the Dr. discovered she had a severe heart murmur. I was devastated, as it's a risk to perform any type of procedure on a pet with a murmur. Dr. Schwartz was amazing. The entire staff was amazing, from the front to back. They were so reassuring that she would be fine, and so empathetic. I was worried, but they listened to every concern. Maggie survived her surgery, and I know it's only because she was operated on by the best there is. I can't express my gratitude, as it broke my heart to think her life could be cut so short. She is home, fully healed, thriving in her environment, and I have only Fresh Pond to thank. I wouldn't go anywhere else. Read Less

This is a great animal hospital. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The techs are always helpful. A bit pricy yet so worth it. I particularly enjoy their use of technology. A regular vet, with later and weekend hours. Can be difficult to find in the building behind the Loading Dock restaurant and grocery. They are very accommodating to giving appointment times, but it does mean that sometimes the wait can be a little longer. Staff is courteous and conscientious. I have been going to Arlington animal clinic on Broadway for the last 25 years they have been outstanding. When we got our chocolate lab three years ago they Arlington animal clinic cannot fit them in because they were so busy so I ended up bringing him to Fresh Pond animal clinic. They were not overly friendly and very expensive. I had a situation where I was away in Nantucket for a week on boat our lab got a hotspot on his pad I needed a blue solution that he got a year ago I was going to have somebody come pick it up that was coming to Nantucket the next day and they would not do prescribe it to me . Very unfriendly not willing to help. I get it it's a steroid he's had it before it's just like having eczema which I do and calling my doctor to ordering my steroid medicine for my eczema what's the difference!!!!!! They are just out to make a buck and don't care about animals. I was also willing to bring him in when I got back on Monday. There is no doubt in my mind if I called Arlington animal clinic they would've given it to me no problem. I will be removing him from that clinic and I will never step foot back in the clinic. We have been getting care for our cat, kitty gangster, at fresh pond for years. Staff are always friendly. KG receives great care from all of the vets on staff. They always call with test results quickly and are willing to take time to explain and answer questions. Care is costly, but I think this is common nowadays. For our family it is worth it. Read Less

is there a word to describe horrendous times 100?? IMPORTANT!!!! My accurate and honest review in Yelp keeps getting moved to the section where it is not seen nor is it included in the rating calculation. I'm guessing fresh pond animal clinic advertises on Yelp - that is a quid pro quo. They goofed big time and we had to put our cat to sleep. Tried to blame us for it. They botched a routine catheterization on our beautiful male cat - handed him to my husband after procedure and said 'his urethra was torn, take the cat to BluePearl- they can fix it'. My husband races up to Blue Pearl in Waltham. BluePearl hospital said they could try (cost $7000 or more which we were unable to pay for) but it would be tricky. We sadly made the decision to put our boy down and are still grieving over the loss months later. What should Fresh Pond have done? Admit their mistake, offer to pay for surgery - end of story. They did offer to pay for the visit in which the incident occurred and would not pay for the treatment at Blue Pearl - wanted us to sign a disclaimer. How litigious of them!! Several medical and veterinary professionals have weighed in and told us that botched catheterization is a real anomaly- hardly ever EVER ever happens. Our current vet said she had not heard of one at all in several years. !! Was it out dumb luck or something else. I don't believe in luck. You decide if you want to take your pet to them. Thank you all for being so kind to me and my beautiful Stella today! I was a blubbering fool and everyone cared for us so lovingly and respectfully! I have been going there for many years and appreciate the care myself and all my pets have always received there,!! I came in sobbing my heart out and was quickly taken to a quiet room by staff the first second, and the amazing care that followed made a horrible day so much easier!!!! I work in people hospitals and often find the care in veterinarian hospitals at a much higher level! If I am ever in a car accident, I will request to go to you, or Angell after hours. I brought a cat here several years ago for a physical. She had a broken tooth. The vet detected a cardiac murmur, and recommended an echocardiogram prior to surgery ($400) The cat was very clearly healthy. I deferred having the echocardiogram.I brought the cat in for the tooth extraction. I was told I had to pay the bill before the surgery. I was given the amount and then asked to see the bill. She initially wouldn't let me see the bill. I asked why there was a charge for a second tooth to be extracted and a second charge for anesthesia. Suddenly, those charges were off my bill, citing a "mistake"I brought that cat to a different vet one year later, and the new vet denied that there was a murmur. huh...I have now received an apology for "confusion" with my last visit. I've been coming here for years and years, and I think they are wonderful; honestly, I would be long gone if I had any reservations about the care here. I am entrusting these doctors with my most precious friends, and really wouldn't settle for less.Honestly, I could not afford to bring my animals here. {I am Lucky enough (currently) to have to have help in paying for my pets care.} Though comparatively I don't think they charge much more than most other vets in the area, but like I said, I think they are exceptional and worth it, if possible!!:))* NOTEWORTHY: Really, the only veterinary care that I am aware of which I could afford personally, would be the Merwin Animal Clinic, whom I've heard very goo things about, & provide some services for free, & otherwise charge using sliding scale system. I've been a customer for 20 years (can't believe it's been that long!) so I'm not writing this review lightly. They are SUPER expensive. I don't mind paying top price if I get top service, and while there have been lots of little incidents that pointed to less than stellar service, today the balance just tipped and I'm not going back.My cat is old, sick and needs medication. When I call to refill, they make a big fuss about "getting the prescription ready and calling me back."They call an hour later and say the prescription is ready. The thing is they're not mixing and compounding out back ("getting it ready!"). It's a package of pills in bubble foil inside a card board box. It's like saying you have to get a pack of gum ready. No you don't. It is ready - you have to retrieve it.The food they mandated for my cat is their most expensive blend. It was almost $50.00 a carton. Although I was cautioned not to give him anything else, their food made the cat sick and he's gotten better switching to Friskies (10 cans for a buck). Let's assume that's just a medical error - vets best judgment was wrong - a costly mistake but a mistake.This week I'm out of town and have a pet sitter. The girl is lovely but gave the cat half a pill per day instead of quarter. Not a big deal, but we ran out of pills at twice the speed we should have and there's a holiday coming up (meaning no mail delivery that day).I called the vet this morning asking if they'd mail the prescription to the house. Front Desk has to check with the vet, they'll call back. Fine. Call back in the afternoon and tell me - they'll mail it but the mail has already gone out for the day (Tuesday), so they'll do it tomorrow (Wednesday). I point out that there's a holiday coming up and ask if someone can put it in a mail box so it gets picked up today that could save two additional days of the cat having no medicine.dead silence.You would think I had asked them to drive the medicine to my house and personally administer it to the cat.They will not put medicine in a mailbox today. The cat has cancer and gets REALLY sick without his meds. The pet sitter is sixteen and I don't feel comfortable asking her mom to pick it up for me. Twenty years a customer. Twenty years.I run my own business and can't imagine treating a customer this way after TWENTY YEARS. Read Less

My family has been using Fresh Pond Animal Hospital for almost 30 years. We brought our childhood cat there, and now my family brings our cat there. I am particularly impressed with Dr. Brault. He has been so wonderful with our cat who is having some issues right now. He gives his recommendations as to test to do, but understands there are limits in terms of what we are willing to do. When I have called to speak with him, he always calls me back in a timely manner, and I never feel rushed. This is a great place to bring your family pets. Update as of 12/22/15: We recently had to put our cat to sleep. It was a traumatic experience for us because we loved him so much, however Dr. Brault made the process bearable. I cannot say enough amazing things about Fresh Pond Animal Hospital! When I first adopted my dog four years ago, I began seeing a vet whose office is at the end of my street, very convenient. When it came time to get my second dog neutered, I purchased the Friends of Animals gift certificate, and my vet did not accept those. I looked at different vets in the area and I liked what I read about Fresh Pond, so we went in for a consultation. Since that day, my dogs have been patients of Dr. Ortiz. She is great with animals and people and if I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Everyone there is more than willing to go out of their way to help and it shows that they genuinely care about their jobs and about the patients. I've never had a single issue here and I advise anyone in the area with pets - not only dogs and cats - to check out Fresh Pond Animal Hospital. I do have to say, I would love to see you accepting Friends of Animals coupons again; Not only is it a great cause, but it will help others find you, like I did. Read Less

I only just became a client at Fresh Pond Animal Hospital (well, technically my dog is the client) but it's been a great experience so far! I was initially drawn in because of their great hours (open til late!) but contact leading up to our first appointment was friendly and easy. A few days after our first visit we received a postcard from Dr. Gerber to our pet - which was really cute. We've been back another time since then and, even though our appointment somehow went missing in the system, we were able to reschedule for the same day and we were well received. So, I have very mixed feelings about this place. When I first started coming last year for regular well checks the prices were high, but the care was good and all my questions were answered. About 8 months ago, my dog was diagnosed with lupus. That experience made me not so happy. I agree with the below reviewer that labs were run without my consent and I was not informed of the charge. (they did a swab of my dogs toenail that showed bacteria. Literally stuck a qtip under her nail, put it under a microscope and said yep, it's bacterial. That cost me 78$ I believe and we didn't even diagnose anything. When I asked about the charge at the front desk she literally laughed at me and said, well that's what it costs. ugh) That just left a very poor taste in my mouth. Also, when I called today to refill my dog's prescription, they didn't have any record of her script in her file. They had me leave a message and "they would look at her paper chart and find it. How long should I go back?" That left me feeling not so great. Fast forward to an hour and a half later, the pharmacy faxing the request, and then me calling again, they are just now finally faxing the request back to the pharmacy.For the prices they charge, service should be 5 star, top notch, no questions asked. If I need a refill, do it asap; not when you feel like it. All in all I feel my rating is accurate, they are A-OK. Dr. Brault is hands down my favorite and he certainly cares about your pets for sure. If they work on a few things, they could significantly improve. Read Less

I go to 2 vets. Bfs dog goes here and my dog goes to one in cambridge. This is by far the worst vets I've ever stepped my foot into. And the most outrageously expensive. To the point you question how they're in business and when they will get sued for these prices. At least double the price of my dogs vets and mine is such a great vets in porter sq. We were there for 15 min max. Reg quick check up with a quick blood work. Bill came to $450+. I wanted to scream when I heard her say that a5 check out. Been telling my bf this is the worst vets with the biggest bill. He never listened til now. After paying thousands for nothing. I am beyond speechless for this place. They categorizes our visit as a "senior visit" to charge more. And ran "senior blood tests" that weren't required without explaining to us or asking our permission. Completely scammed and disgusted. Making so much unethical money out of people's love for their pets. They charge you like money is water n not hard earned. Do not go here. You will regret it. My bf is. Read Less
