I just recently moved out of state to Billerica, MA along with my 2 dogs so I didn't know much about vets in the area. My 15 week old puppy was attacked by an aggressive dog in my neighborhood and I was in a complete panic. I took him to the closest emergency veterinary hospital to me which happened to be Middlesex County Animal Hospital for him to be treated immediately. I called ahead while in the car and the staff were waiting for him when I got there and helped me fill out the paperwork as I was completely frazzled and distraught. Dr. Wharrie met with me and discussed what he thought were the appropriate steps to take for treatment. He was so attentive and sweet and really gave my pup the best care he could. Dr. Heckerling is just an absolutely amazing guy. He helped us out so much with our little Doxy and even though he had many problems we always had an excellent answer from the caring staff at the animal hospital. Make sure to make an appointment before you go, always call ahead it’s super easy and very worth it. Also when your pet has to stay overnight or all day for surgery or something of that nature know that they are in excellent Hands and will be very well cared for. I live in Dorchester and travel all the way to Billerica because this place is that good. The staff and Dr Bailey are great. Clean and spacious, and the vet was nice, but I did not feel confident that they truly cared about us. Several months ago my dog had a rash and the vet was so concerned about poison ivy that she hesitated to handle her, even with gloves on and even though we had not been affected after handling her extensively. Additionally, we informed the vet that my dog was almost out of her regular medication but they did not call in the prescription until four business days had passed and I called to remind them. The staff was not very friendly when I called with my concern about the prescription not being authorized yet. Once authorized, I had to wait an additional few days to receive it in the mail - we ran out. Recently, when we needed another refill on the same med, they said they would only refill it one more time because the medication has a tendency to cause UTI's and they wanted her to come in for a urinalysis. Sounds like they care, right? Until a second opinion at our new vet said they've never heard of the med causing that side affect and that testing was unnecessary because my dog did not exhibit symptoms of a UTI. Last, I provided them with our most recent vet records and then they told me my dog needed some vaccines. I didn't question them, but it turns out they gave her the rabies vaccine a year too soon. I know I can't expect them to be perfect, but I wasn't comfortable with the multiple issues I had at this place. I would not suggest going here. Read Less

I don't even know where to start with all the love I have for this hospital & all it's people! I know our story isn't a unique one to pet owners OR for this facility but all the same, it was life changing for us! Our older cat, Smokey, was having dental problems that progressively got more & more serious. We had brought him to MULTIPLE vets & clinics who ignored it or downplayed the severity of his condition. Another AMAZING facility basically next to us (Merwin Memorial Free Clinic For Animals) got one look at his mouth & said bring him to The Middlesex Hospital NOW! We rushed there & they diagnosed him as needing emergency surgery TO HAVE ALL OF HIS TEETH REMOVED(!!!) so I made sure to schedule it within 24hrs!     From the moment they took him, looked him over, took us aside & spoke to us like HUMANS who have feelings, explaining every last detail about everything & answering all my questions graciously, I KNEW we had found a real gem in this place!     We don't own a car as we live in the city, so our process of getting out to Bellerica was (at FIRST borrowing a friends car, not knowing there was a commuter rail out there also) renting a car, the timing around this all happened was LITERALLY two weeks before Christmas so we let them know things were tight & what did they do? They immediately took back the first pricing estimate they gave us & cut off a chunk. After my husband & I spoke, we agreed it was VERY reasonable compared to what we THOUGHT it was going to be (ESPECIALLY knowing about the absolute HORROR show Angel mspca in Jamaica Plain & how THEY price thru the roof for their help) so we were completely relieved. Yes it was an unforeseen expense & WAY more than we had planned to spend at the time but at the end of the day whatever needed to be done we were willing to do & if they had needed three times it to save our baby's life, we would have paid it glady! When we went to the secretaries counter after all was said & a course of action was decided, to prepay for everything & the surgery, they had given us an early christmas present & dropped the price, yet again! It brought tears to our eyes & we could feel the generosity. They KNEW we appreciated it but we thanked them profusely anyway, bringing the cost down to something that was completely manageable.     I bring Smokey back in the following day for his surgery & they immediately sweep him away to start prepping him.They comforted me in every way, being incredibly sweet & gentle with not only him but having a wonderful demeanor with me, (who was a complete wreck & in hysterics over such a serious surgery). Just like if a human family member went under for surgery, they called me every few hours for updates on how surgery was going, since it went longer than anticipated & also a call upon finishing everything, what time to come pick him up, etc etc.      When I picked Smokey up, our sweet, sweet Doctor came out & raved about how well it went, how optimistic he was for the healing process/time, went over all instructions thoroughly as not to overwhelm me & I could only hug & thank him. All the women in the office gushed over our cat, saying how handsome & mild mannered he is. We were scheduled for a FREE return/check up visit for 2 weeks after & all was healing much quicker than anticipated, very well so we were sent on our merry way.       I couldn't help myself but show everyone at the hospital, how much I appreciated not only the hard work they had done but how it just overflowed from the place how much each & every one of them was an animal lover. You'd think because they were in animal medical care, like usual vets or clinics, they would be very orchestrated & "sterile" about everything but it didn't make them jaded or course about it. They still had incredibly sweet & sensitive bedside manner when it came to their hands on approach & interacting with us. I brought a Christmas card for our surgeon & all the other nurses, with a hand baked batch of cupcakes, just to show a little extra gratitude! It was NOTHING in my opinion to go that little extra bit considering all they had done for us, so I'm REALLY hoping some animal Moms, Dads & Owners read this & get a better feeling about this hospital & it helps you make up your mind. By far the best. I travel 25 minutes to go to them! They were kind with our first throughout his life and his passing. Even remembered that after his passing to no longer put us in that same room... Now we have a new VERY ENERGETIC puppy who is VERY playful at his exams but they ALL love his jumping playfulness anyways! They are detailed with any medications given. We love this clinic. my husband who is from Billerica had been using McGraths because they were close and his parents used them when they had pets but after going there myself and dealing with the extremely high costs to match the extremely rude staff, we switched to Middlesex and couldn't be happier. They are affordable. Dr Wharrie is so kind and efficient. The entire staff is pleasant and accommodating. The office is clean and nice. My cat had a surgery recently here because she ate something she wasn't supposed to.  I was so shocked and sad.  I even cried there because I couldn't hold it.  But everyone took care of her (and me) very well immediately even though she was so upset and not easy to everyone. My cat is fully recovered now, and I am very happy.  They did a great job for everything.  Everyone here is very kind, friendly and professional.  I really respect and appreciate everything they do to help animals and even the owners.  Thank you so much again for saving my cat! This was my and my dogs first time here , sadly the last for my amazingly 14 yr old golden ( Hunter).   I have gone to McGrath for yrs and have been unhappy with them for that long but they were close. A friend suggested this place and AMAZING. I put my baby to sleep just 3 1/2 hours ago and the pain is unbearable but I just have to mention the vet and the help were so unbelievable that they have eased the pain some what they were do kind to Hunter and myself EVERYONE of them . Hands down my favorite Vets office. I'm so glad we found Dr. Bailey! She's polite, friendly, warm and takes her time listening to us and always gives good feedback. We have a almost 3 yr old female German shepherd and she treats her like gold. Always friendly. My dog has loved coming here since she was a puppy. We've had prior dogs and never had such a positive experience. I really am glad our family and extended family has found such a down to earth real vet. Reasonably priced, forward when asked what the costs are ahead of time. My time or people. Not to mention they made upgrades to the facility that are fantastic! I'm glad they are doing well! We just moved to area and had to make the very difficult decision to end our dogs suffering from oral cancer...I called over 20 places and no one could help us without an outrageous fee, long wait for appointment and heartless comments . Finally, we found MCAH and spoke with Beth, she got us in right away, and fee's were reasonable and no hidden charges. I love everyone here . Since day 1 with my puppy she has had countless health issues, we have had her a year. They have squeezed me in and acted promptly with any phone call of concern and made sure they explained everything to me and made sure Bella was ok. They suggested a specific blood test to check why she was so sick all the time and we found out she had a liver that was not functioning properly. They referred me to the 1 specialist in the state for her to be seen and get surgery. She is since doing fantastic. We have also done puppy kindergarten classes with Christie who is by far one of the most dog passionate people I have ever met. She's patience and kind and loves all the animals that she meets and they love her . All the doctors here are equally amazing I have seen them all countless times. I appreciate the friendliness of the front desk staff as well they know me and my dog by name and are extremely helpful and personable when I call or when I'm there for an appointment.  They have a large very clean lobby if a dog has an accident they are cleaning it immediately . I really appreciate all the people that work here and care for the animals they really care about all of them and it shows. Anyone who doesn't take their pet here is missing out. Yesterday I have say was the first time in ten years I've had a bad experience. Not sure what there issue was but my poor Angel was very anxious waiting 50 min then put in a room to wait another 15. She was very stressed out. I didn't feel like she got the class 1 treatment that they are known for giving her in the past. Maybe the next visit will be much better. We've been with Dr Evelyn Bailey for a number of years and wouldn't consider going anywhere else. Dr. Bailey not only delivered my Minpin Scooter 20 yrs ago, sadly was there when we lost him last year. She felt the same pain and sorrow we did in the loss of our family member. I moved to Billerica in 2013 and immediately started looking for a vet for my cats and then, later for my puppy. Middlesex County Animal Hospital and its doctors and staff are fantastic and even my cats (who are always less than happy to go) seem to actually LIKE the people! My dog thinks it's a social affair! All of the treatment, including emergencies, we've received here has been great and I've always felt like my animal's best interest were the main focus of ALL of our visits. Stay the hell AWAY from these people if your interested in compassionate, competent care. Long story short, it's the end of the road for my furangel and she was screaming in pain and it was like taking a bullet, I called them not once, not twice, but FOUR times begging and pleading with them to ease her pain with something stronger than tramadol, I was told that was the best they could do. Tramadol. Pathetic, insulting and inhumane. After taking her there for a year and knowing her medical issues combined with her age(eleven), treatment like this is beyond unacceptable. They simply CHOSE not to do anything for my girl, so I found a hospital who DID. All I wanted was some end of life comfort and dignity for a dog that gave me SO much, is that really asking so much? This dump seemed to think so. She is now home, comfortable and my last few days with her are possible because I took her elsewhere. This place was great. They saw my dog that day when no one else could. The waiting room is big enough that your dog is not completely surrounded by other dogs. Every staff member I interacted with there was helpful, kind and efficient. The vet even called the next week to check up and answer additional questions! My only critique is that, while their prices are low, they will prescribe anything they can and act like you must have them. It is a drug heavy vet. We ended up using one of the three drugs the vet sold me. The other two were just precautionary and raised an otherwise very reasonable bill. I should have just purchased the antibiotic and come back for the steroid and anti-diarrhea if my dog needed them. Read Less

MCAH provided excellent and reasonably priced care for my cat throughout her life.  My cat had kidney disease which requires lots of monitoring. I could always talk to Dr. H on the phone about the tests and he never suggested unnecessary or dangerous procedures.  Another vet (before I came to MCAH) had recommended dental surgery for one of her teeth. Dr. H investigated and told me that the tooth was not bothering her. Furthermore,  given her situation with the kidney disease, he would not chance putting her under.  Thank you. i brought my boxer there exactly 3 weeks ago..she was pering and drinking alot...i was also concerned her gland in neck were swollen..the exam was shotty..not even taking her temp..when done i asked about glands which i did not see her even look at...she said they were normal..although i was given a quote on phone for exam,urinalysis and blood work to be 240.. i only got a urinalysis and crappy exam cost me 170 !! no blood work would be 165 more !! the urinalysis showed bacteria and wanted another 140 to culture it...i said from first phone call i was tight on money...then refused me an antibiotic...Today my dog was diagnosed by a competent vet with Lymphoma !! they felt the gland immediately just a week after they examined..im no vet but i felt it !! my dog is now on the antibiotics and prednisone but very sick.....i may of had afighting chance had i gone to Saugus Animal Hospital in the beginning.!! front end staff great !! My poor cat is traumatized after a visit there. I took him there for an exam a few months ago and he was so badly treated that he cowers at the vet now. We waited for a few minutes in the lobby before being taken to the exam room. When the vet came in, she seemed very young. My cat does not like being held and protests but usually he just gets a bit testy. There he yowled and she didn't seem to know how to deal with him. When they took him to the back for shots, I could hear him yowling through two closed doors. He was so stressed. There were many dogs in the waiting area and there was constant barking which didn't help.I have since taken him to a much nicer vet (Countryside in Westford) where I could see how much he was scared at MCAH.  Maybe there are good with dogs at MCAH but never again for my cats. By far the best Vet I have ever dealt with!! They take such care in knowing you and your pet, hard to find at other places. I wouldn't trust any one other than Dr. Baily and the staff here with my dog!!Their prices are fair and they always give options for treatment, unlike other take it or leave it Vets. Been torn about writing this review for almost a year.  Before April 2015 I would definitely of given this practice 5 stars.  They present very well, very friendly and the office is nice and clean.  They do nickel and dime you and they are on the expensive side.  Never liked that they NEVER did any work on your animals in front of you--NEVER felt secure or agreed with that part of the practice.  Why does a professional need to move your animal to a back room away from the owner to vaccinate,draw bloods,etc.?   You do not realize how unsafe your animals are until there is a problem with their health.  After coming across other individuals that i have talked to that have had experiences with this animal hospital I feel if your pet is not healthy be an advocate for your pet and STAY AWAY.    Our dog had a simple cyst removed and we thought might as well do some dental care while she is under anesthesia.  I signed my consent and was told to pick my dog up at 2:30--they kept putting me off saying my dog was having trouble waking up from the anesthesia(that is fair she is older).  Knowing the anesthesia I signed for had a VERY short half life I had to question and question until I got the true answer that they never used the meds I signed for(I should of been told that right away--what is the use of signing a consent??).  So now they felt that if they over hydrated my dog with IV fluids that she would clear out the meds that they gave her for the procedure and she would perk up.  It did not work.  They NEVER offered to keep her overnight to monitor her--now knowing what I know I can only say THANK GOD.   I picked up my dog at closing after 7pm.  I was waiting in the lobby for them to bring my dog to me and Joe told me I had to drive around back to pick her up she could not walk on the tile flooring--fair enough.   I drove around back and my almost 90lb dog was carried to my car and put in the back seat of my car.  Obviously my dog could not even stand. My dog could not even hold her head up and I questioned her being all wet Joe said he washed her bottom---my dog was laying in a wet crate post op from them over hydrating her and not even thinking about maybe catheterizing her to empty her bladder for her comfort---they knew how much fluid they gave her.  They over hydrated her and allowed her to lay in a crate that she did not want to pee in I feel that is not compassion for animals that is neglect.  And Joe instructs me to give my dog more pain meds that they had me purchase that would again make my dog even more drowsy(when she could not even hold her head up).  It took my dog over 48 hrs to be able to stand on her own to do the stairs to go outside on her own.  Not even a followup phone call to ask how things were going after the way they discharged her.  I think that speaks volumes.  They lost a good customer with multiple pets, Read Less

My 2 Dachshunds have been patients at MCAH since their birth 5 years ago. As a pet parent, you always want the best care and treatment for your loved ones and I can honestly say that I have full confidence and comfort in process of care at MCAH! First and foremost Dr. Rondo and Dr. Bailey have provided my Dachshunds with excellent clinical and surgical care. The staff provides great service and Beth always accommodates us the best she can. The office is beautiful and clean, the prices are a value given the quality of service and if I have a question, they find the answer. Two examples of their quality is, one of my Dachshunds had emergency back surgery at 3am on a Sunday at the MSPCA. MCAH helped tremendously with her aftercare, very caring, the appropriate recommendations and very generous with my finances considering the surgery cost 5K. More recently I took my Dachshunds to the "Dog Dentist" in Acton, I was quoted $1,200 - $1,400 just for one of their cleanings! I have no idea why I did not consult Dr. Rondo before? Long story short, my Dachshunds are getting their teeth cleaned at MCAH soon for 1/4 - 1/3 the cost of what the "upscale dog dentist" was quoting us for. Thank You MCAH! Read Less

A veterinary practice that loves your animals as much as you do!!! I will try to keep this to a minimum, but it's so difficult considering the number of times they have gone above and beyond the call of duty. We have only lived in Boston for a year and have an extremely accident prone puppy, that keeps me in a constant state of anxiety. He always finds new adventurous ways to see his friends at Middlesex County Animal Hospital. They are 20 miles from our home, but the care and service is so outstanding I wouldn't dream of thinking I could find a better group of people to care for our furry children. - Everyone is kind and patient (even to anxious parents). - They don't force expensive, unnecessary tests upon you. - They give you multiple choices, with rationals as to what may or may not be best for your pet. - It's rare to find a vet that understands you aren't independently wealthy. - Their prices are reasonable and fair. - If you call, you can talk to an intelligible person about your pet with little time on hold. - If they need to call you back, they do it in a timely manor. - If you randomly show up, they help you. - I can't tell you the number of times we've showed up at 8am (with what I felt was a crisis) and they've been nice enough to help us. - We've never sat in the waiting room for unreasonable amounts of time. - My car battery died in their parking lot and they helped me jump it!!! They were very reasonably priced and I loved how they kept me updated when my dog went in for a dental cleaning as he was going under anasthesia.
