Integrative Animal Health

Bolton, Massachusetts
General Info
Founded by Dr. Randy Caviness in 2005, the modern Integrative Animal Health Center provides the latest technology in diagnostics and treatment while integrating therapies that contribute to the natural healing and enhanced quality of life for animals and thus the quality of life for their human caretakers. Integrative therapies for humans have today become mainstream. Dr. Caviness has been integrating complementary therapies into his practice since 1993. IAHC is the first in the area to offer comparable integrative health services for animals.

Dr. Caviness rocks!  My Rosie has lymphoma and was enrolled in a clinical trial at Tufts.  I consulted him for diet and supplement advice.  The majority of the dogs in the trial needed another dose of chemo after 3 months-Rosie is still in remission after 8 months!  I also took my 11 yo male who has arthiritis.  He cannot have rimadyl because it upsets his stomach.  Dr. Caviness gave me supplements that have greatly helped his mobility.  The only downside it is takes a while to get an appointment-they're very busy! I wouldn't take our dog Emma anywhere else unless there were an emergency that we needed to treat immediately. We live over an hour away (73 miles) and we take the time to drive our baby girl here because they not only genuinely care about our four-legged family member, they treat her that way as well. They absolutely care more about your pet than over-treating with conventional medicine. You will find slightly different approaches based on the doctor you see, however, the general rule of thumb is to not give your pet anything they don't really need in terms of shots and vaccinations. They offer other holistic treatments that they combine with traditional medicine to give your pet the best possible experience. They take the time with each patient to answer all questions, which can very often lead to longer-than-typical wait times, even if you have an appointment for a specific time. While, as busy humans, this can certainly be frustrating from time-to-time, one must just remember that when it's your own turn, you get that same attention and care, without feeling like you're on a production line. It's a small inconvenience, that doesn't always happen. We are more than happy to wait when we go as we know this place has been instrumental in educating us on our dog's health and keeping her healthy. As I write this review she is 10 1/2 and doing fantastic. She has environmental and seasonal allergies that popped up 3 or 4 years ago. IAHC provided sound advice for testing and treatment, and while not every approach we tried worked, we have been able to keep our baby girl healthy even during the tough months. She went from incessantly scratching herself 24x7 and chewing her paws raw and bloody (requiring full time attention to stop), to minor discomfort 2 months of the year. This was due to uncovering food allergies that we have been able to work around, thus greatly reducing the effects of her environmental allergies that were plaguing her. She now eats a carefully controlled diet with ingredients that do not contain any allergens to which she reacts. It's certainly more "work" than it was when she was a pup, but it has made ALL the difference in the world to her life (and ours).I honestly don't know where she (or we) would be without the team at IAHC. They, in essence, have saved and prolonged her life, and we will be forever grateful for the amount of care and love they dispense here.If you are still reading this review, you should absolutely take your family pet here. I have no question of the quality of treatment your pet will receive.Much Love to the IAHC team,Jason, Katie, and Emma (the patient). Read Less

The vet team appears to be very informed, helpful and good with our dogs. There are two major downsides to Integrative.  The first is they are always very busy and this means waiting to see the vet even when you have a scheduled time and checking out is also not a speedy process. The second is cost.  Overall their services are more than other vets we've gone to and they severely overcharge for extras like heartworm, dog toothpaste and other things that can easily be bought online for 50% of what Integrative charges.  (In other words, never buy a product direct from them...go online to Amazon or Chewy instead.) I see I'm not alone in driving an hour to get here. This practice is fantastic. We sought an an integrative practice after moving here from NJ, and we actually like this practice better than our old one. Dr Parkis is our primary vet, but all the vets we've met are great. Dr Parkis gets on the floor with our dogs and is really compassionate and gentle.  She explains things thoroughly. I don't want to unnecessarily medicate my dogs, so I love having her alternative medical expertise, as well as a traditional perspective. It's the best of both worlds, for me. One of our sweet dogs was diagnosed with TCC and Dr. Parkis sent us to Tufts, and I know Tufts Oncology is the main reason Tigger is still here with us. Overall, this is an all-inclusive, kind, knowledgeable group of vets Read Less

They have taken care of our dog, Rudi, for many years and not once did we have a bad experience. The whole team is very friendly and caring. Dr. Linda Rogers has gone above and beyond helping Rudi through some difficult health issues. He required a lot of testing and Dr. Rogers frequently called to discuss the results with me, typically, at the end of her long work day. Working in health care myself, I always had a lot of questions for her which she patiently answered. I felt she was treating Rudi like she would be treating her own dog and that was very reassuring to me. I highly recommend this practice. Read Less

Caring, loving, pleasant, always trying the least invasive possibility first, give you choices. I have been driving here an hour from Boston for about 9 years, since we found it. It is worth it, my dog gets excellent care, I get a peace of mind that she is never given anything she does not need (like rabies vaccination every year), they recommend alternatives (better tick collar, not full of harmful chemicals). I never had to wait more than a few minutes, but people should understand that especially in a small place, if there is an emergency or exception, you will have to wait! I'd rather wait than be treated like a thing on a conveyor belt. My dog loves coming here, she seems to think it is a social visit, and that's how it feels to me too. Although we usually only come once or twice a year, Dr. Caviness remembers us (and I don't think it is because she growls at him and behaves like a bitch, I am sure he is used to that) and takes time to talk to us and answer any questions. The Center is right at the freeway exit, very easy to find. As a treat we go for a walk around there. It is beautiful, we just try not to catch a tick or step on a snake. And the back-road scenic drive home is slow, but fun (apple farm nearby..). Read Less

Dr. Parkis helped my baby, shes the same spunky little princess I lost 7 months ago and because of Dr. Parki's recommendations, and expertise I'm sure I will have many more years with my dog. I cannot say enough good things about her, my dog is very nervous and suspicious by nature, but was almost instantly at ease with her. We first met Dr. Rogers at our PCV's office many years ago. About a year ago, we reached out to her at Integrative when our bullmastiff developed an chronic jaw locking issue. We took her to a few specialists and even did a CT scan, but after months of testing and consults, we could not get a conclusive diagnosis. So an orthopedic surgeon suggested trying chiropractic, and I immediately remembered Dr. Rogers. We brought both our girl and boy to Dr. Rogers twice a month (1-hour each way) for several months and could see positive results immediately. Dr. Rogers' chiropractic sessions include the entire body with a focus on particular areas when needed, such as our girl's jaw at first, then last week it was a leg muscle. It is the only veterinary office where our dogs don't hesitate to enter and wag their tales once inside. Our boy is especially enamored with Dr. Rogers. He is first at her feet for his treatment when she enters the room. He outweighs her by nearly 100lbs, but submits to her completely and will let her do pretty much anything to him. It's hilarious. Our little (140lb) girl with two knee surgeries behind her, a cranky jaw and arthritis is happy as a clam after her visits. There's nothing better than to see your babies all energized and playful again once they've been treated. Dr. Rogers is wonderful in many other ways too. While not our primary care vet, she is always willing to answer any questions at any time. She was willing to review all of our girls records and tests relating to her jaw and followed her progress after knee surgery. She responds to emails and checks-in by email as well. Also, we like that she "integrates" conventional veterinary medicine with holisitic medicine. So as a pet parent you get the best both worlds. As far as timely appointments, yes, as some have not so kindly noted - they can run behind schedule. However, it is far from unprofessionalism, arrogance, lack or respect or care. It's actually quite the opposite - thorough, quality and compassionate care. The doctors and staff at IAHC genuinely care for their patients. At each and every appointment, they take time to listen, evaluate, treat and answer questions. We have never felt rushed and in return are happy to wait because as they say, some things are worth waiting for, especially when it comes to the well-being of my pets.If you're a slave to the hands of time, perhaps add some time before and after your appointment or maybe this isn't the place for you. That said, you would be missing out. Read Less

My dogs don't stress out over going to IAHC like they did our other vet. It is a peaceful environment with knowledgeable staff. Drs. Rogers & Caviness helped solve two health issues that were going unresolved despite efforts at my previous vet. I like the combination of Alternative medicine and Western medicine. I feel like I am getting the best health options with the least invasiveness on my dogs. The practice is forward thinking, open minded & up to date on what well informed dog owners want help with such as diet ?raw, kibble or canned, to vaccinate or titer, dealing with lumps & bumps with & without surgery, easing aging discomfort with various non-pharma techniques like acupuncture, chiropractic, massage etc, homeopathy & Chinese herbs as alternative remedies, & much more. The vets listen well to me & to my dogs & the number of visits to the vet has greatly reduced because my dogs are healthier now. I have not had surgery at IAHC so I can't speak to that but I haven't needed it & it seemed like before there was always something at my other vet. I was constantly there.  Now my visits are greatly reduced. I would like 24 hour access for regular clients just in case but that is asking a lot of a small practice. Still I believe there is nothing to compare with IAHC and I have been in the dog world for many years. Read Less

I wrote a review last week in which was due to inaccurate information - I removed and now am re-writing ... This is directed solely at the receptionist whos name starts with an H ... She is negligent and a down right disgusting person. My mother has taken her dogs here for 6 years. Our 4 year old Golden who had been going here her entire life was incredibly sick due to being sprayed in the face by a skunk in October. We had to put her to sleep 2 weeks ago because of how fast the toxicity of the spray destroyed her kidneys in just over a month. She was the most active and well taken care of dog I have ever seen. My mother called at least 5 times while the dog was in agonizing pain and every single time was told they were too busy to see her by said person and that Dr. Caviness would call her back. He never did because said person never told him of the situation and as a result our dog suffered, had to see a vet she had never been too and went from a perfectly healthy dog in October to no longer with us in December.  After we put the dog to sleep my mother was absolutely and is still devestated. She got a call from Dr. Caviness the other day after writing him an email detailing what had happened and how disappointed and upset she was with him. As stated, he knew nothing about this because of said person not telling him a single thing about it. If you ever call this office and she answers, immediately ask to talk to someone else. She should not be working here and we will do everything in our power to make sure she isnt. Read Less

My kids really appreciated it, again it was a really sad time for us as a family so that helped a little seeing her little paw print. I would recommend this place anytime. It is a little more expensive than a few other local ones, but it's worth it. Read Less

As ridiculous as this may sound, I drive an hour each way to see Dr. Rogers at IAHC. She has been so helpful with all three of my dogs - one senior, one competitive performance dog, and one crazy pup with a behavior disorder. She admits what she doesn't know, researches and consults with other vets if she's unfamiliar with something, and returns phone calls and e-mails promptly. Everyone at this practice rocks - the receptionists are on the ball, the techs are wonderful, and the vets practice a perfect blend of conventional and holistic medicine. If you're searching for a veterinary clinic that respects you and your pets, look no further! Read Less

Words cannot express how happy I am that I found Integrative Animal Health Center. My little girl (dog) was suffering from allergies.  I knew that medicine wasn't the answer to solve all these problems. I knew diet had a lot to do with her health - and I just didn't know how to go about her diet. Integrative Animal Health Center is a 45 minute drive from my house, and it's well worth the drive for me. The center is very clean and modern. The entire staff is extremely friendly, helpful, pleasant, and professional. My appointment did not feel rushed at all, Dr. Rogers took the time to get to know my dog and listened. My appointment lasted around an hour..my last vet always wanted me out in under 20 minutes. I feel comfortable asking questions, and I am encouraged to do so. I really believe in their approaches. I am not someone who believes in over medicating, over vaccinating your dog. Of course medicine is sometimes needed and it seems as though Integrative Animal Health Center believes that too. Their prices are the same as my previous vet. I absolutely love Integrative Animal Health Center!!!! Read Less

Dr. Linda Rogers has gone above and beyond helping Rudi through some difficult health issues. Read Less

Read Less

I absolutely love this place and am so happy I found them.  I was looking for a more holistic vet and a smaller practice.  Dr. Rogers is wonderful.  She takes her time with you, is responsive, and doesn't push unnecessary procedures on you.  She also tries to work with you financially whenever possible.  I had Dr. Caviness on one occasion and he was amazing with my dog. I recently had to bring my dog in because she was attacked by another dog.  I got there first thing in the morning.  There were no doctors there.  The vet techs shaved the area around the wound and assessed her and told me to take her to the emergency vet.  They called the e-vet to let them know I was coming.  They didn't charge me at all.  They called to follow up several times to see how she was doing.  They are wonderful!  My only wish is that holistic alternatives be offered more often.  Otherwise, this place is amazing.

Read Less

Excellent facility! I have always gotten excellent care for my dog here! And yes as a previous commenter said - they ROCK!  Both Dr. Caviness and Dr. Rogers are terrific and the staff are wonderful! I prefer holistic methods for my pets ( and myself) and having a caring veterinary staff nearby is a great relief. They take time to listen and give great after care advice. Highly recommend!!!! Both Dr.s at this facility are excellent and kind with animals. I have taken a few of my animals here for quite serious things, my dog which ended up having to go somewhere else because it was an emergency overnight and had to put my cat down there : ( so sad because I accidently ran over her (even more sad) this was a very special family pet and it was horrific for me. They were so kind to me and did not make me feel stupid at all. Then a week later I got a card with her paw print and and a sympathy card.

Read Less
