I am so grateful to Dr. Cheung and the rest of the South Boston Animal Hospital staff. I have been bringing my dogs since we adopted them (a little over 1 year), and have generally been happy with their care. My last experience with them helped me realize how truly wonderful they are. Last Sunday one of my dogs, Champ, got pretty sick early in the morning. I called the vet as soon as they opened and they were thankfully able to squeeze him in. Dr. Cheung and the rest of the staff were attentive and walked us through the options for testing and treatment, taking our opinion into the decision making. They also followed up with phone calls the next 3 days to make sure Champ was getting better, and responded quickly when I called with questions. I have a 10 month old American bulldog and he is a gentle giant he gets beat up by kittens and poodles he has never growled bit doesn't jump or even bark so we have been coming here sense I got him we always had the same vet until the other day when I brought him in for a cold I had to hold him so they could get his temperature he freaked out and was looking back trying to see what's in his butt and he squealed and then the vet came and told me that he was warning them that he was going to bit if you knew my puppy you would understand that's completely not at all what he was doing he was trying to figure out what was cold in his bum the doctor then continued to tell me that I needed to leave the room he was protecting me and that I need to talk to his trainers about it because what if I was on a plane and someone elbowed me and he reacted that way oh he's a service dog I was mortified and left crying I have to deal with people judging him off the way he looks every single day I shouldn't have to deal with it at the vet moral of the story I switch vets and will not be returning Read Less

Rating SBAH 1 star only because the staff are nice for the most part. However pricing is pretty steep! I've only been to this vet twice and both times the bill has been a bit unreasonable.The first visit was a new patient visit for my puppy who is now only 7 months. (The charges were as follows.. *Regulatory/Medical waste fee: $4.50 *New patient examination: $63.50 *Rabies canine 1year booster: $35.25 *Dhpp: $32.15 * also because I thought my pup had a UTI *Index urinalysis: 59.38 *with no finding) A visit that only lasted about 15 minutes & introducing my pup, totaled a whopping 194.78!! I was very naive to think that it should cost that much, I mean dogs are pricey regardless of the matter. I especially spoil my pup! During that exam I was informed that the first visit would be a bit pricey because he is a new patient and that I would only have to pay for his one shot on the next visit. Although this is a stretch I still made an appointment for his last DHPP shot. Today he got his vaccine & it was 63.15!!! Wait there's no way just one shot could cost that much. I was honestly baffled thinking maybe I got charged the wrong bill. So I call SBAH and questioned the bill. The receptionist broke down the bill for what I was charged for ( Regulatory waste fee: $4.50 *Technician office visit: $26.50 *Dhpp booster: $32.15) of course I ask why would I be charged for a "technician office visit"? She stated that it was for the technicians time...I mean obviously, is there really a self serve option?. The staff who administered the shot probably took less than 3 minutes tops! That included vitals (temp & weight). On top of that I was bothered by the fact that she sounded very unsure of the reason I was charged??! I will find a way to speak to a manager or some higher authority to resolve this issue so people aren't charged unfairly. I've been taking my dog here since we got her as a puppy. For the last year and a half, we have had nothing but good experiences with SBAH. Making appointments is really easy and I like their online portal. I think their 7 days a week schedule really makes them accommodating. While I feel they can sometimes be on the more expensive side, I will continue paying because I think everything they offer is worth the money. Read Less

I can't thank Dr. Cheung and the amazing staff at South Boston Animal Hospital enough for the exceptional care that was provided last night. Our 10 year old Border Collie mix had a nasty looking eye infection that had progressed over the course of a couple days that we wanted treated quickly. After our regular vet office cancelled our appointment at the last minute, we called South Boston Animal Hospital and they graciously offered for us to come in despite having never been there AND 30 minutes before their closing. Dr. Cheung performed a thorough exam, performed appropriate testing (no unnecessary add-ons which we have experienced with other offices), prescribed the appropriate treatment and provided clear instructions for how to care for our guy. We are looking forward to transitioning our dog's care to South Boston Animal Hospital and were pleased to find out they had already contacted our vet's office to obtain all of his records.I highly, highly recommend South Boston Animal Hospital to anyone in the Boston area looking for a team of veterinary professionals to care for their furry friend! So so so happy we were recommended to this office when we moved from Chelsea to Dorchester. Very convenient location - parking stinks but it's worth it because everyone is so nice and Dr. Waggoner is amazing! I feel we are in very good hands and that is important. Highly highly recommended! Expensive but worth it. The staff is amazing! Very friendly, accommodating, professional, knowledgeable, and kind. Every person I've encountered has been wonderful with animals; they truly have a calming effect on my dogs and I, and have treated us with compassion through a couple of emergencies and a surgery. I've been going here for years, since moving too far from my old vet. I always feel good anytime they need to take my dog to the back for drawing blood, because they bring a soothing nature that doesn't even stress out my skittish little rescue. I don't know if it's normal, but I rarely see the same Dr twice (granted 6-12 months between healthy visits) so I can't really build a rapport like I do with my own Dr, but luckily the constant stream of great people makes it hardly an issue. I had to come here when I was living in Boston for a few months. It was super easy to make a same-day appointment, the clinic is spotless, and the vet we saw was very caring and knowledgeable. They are not only skilled and progressive with some cutting edge treatment options, but they are also very compassionate and caring to the animals and owners.  The team at SBAH has stayed late to help my animals in an emergency, gone above and beyond to accommodate my schedule and the needs of some difficult animals.  Jason, Ann Dee, Danny, Lindsay, Ali, Laura, Tiara, Mary Kate and other team members could not be more professional and supportive.  Jason, Laura and Ann Dee have taken the time to offer extra help and knowledge on various treatment options that Dr. Waggener or Dr. Yolanda or Dr. Chase have suggested to me.My oldest dog adores the team and going to visit the vet thanks to the warm welcome he always receives from Jason, Lindsay and Tiara.  They have been great about sending me pictures of my dog during laser treatment and the vet and team members have called to check on my animals after any issues.  I could not be more grateful for the numerous great experiences that both my pets and myself have had at SBAH.  I would highly recommend them to anyone because they care for the animals as if they were their own. Extremely rude staff. Jason was rude and did not care about the needs of my dog. My dog had a skin infection that was getting worse and the only time that worked to bring him in was on Monday- the staff was waiting on the doctor to approve an antibiotic or cream to stop the infection from getting worse until his Monday appointment.Jason was extremely rude to me and said I needed to be more flexible and that I didn't send a picture of my dogs infection to the animal hospital (which is false because I was on the phone with the lady I was originally working with and she told me it looked like an infection).Also the doctor  said the staff  felt uncomfortable around me- as I am just concerned about my dogs health and no one there seems to care about. Me and my three dogs will never go back there again.Funny the response I got- considering when I spoke with Natalie she acknowledged that prescriptions were approved yesterday and no one bothered to call me or return my call. Which could have prevented my pets hot spot from getting worse until I went to my scheduled appointment on Monday. Read Less

All of the staff, from the front desk, to the technicians, to the doctors at this location are amazing.  I am incredibly picky with the people I choose to help my dog (English Bulldog).  They are patient, kind, sweet, and very gentle with my little girl (she is a "senior" dog). I have nothing but positive things to say about this animal hospital.  I have gone to a variety of animal hospitals through the years (my current pup is my third english bulldog) and this hospital is by far the best of the best (I have been to places from Worcester to Boston).  The facility itself is always clean and well maintained (which speaks volumes about the care they provide).  They make you feel as though your pet is the only pet that's there...and when I deal with care of my dog, that is exactly how I want to feel.  Absolute props to all the staff at this hospital. I've been here a few times with two different cats. My first time here was to put down my cat Smoke who was old and sadly ready to move on. The team here was very polite and accommodating to me. A few weeks later I received a thoughtful hand written card of condolences from the staff and they even inked an image of his own paw onto the card. I found that to be very sweet. What a great place to bring your animal. We've been going to the South Boston Animal Hospital since July '16 when we got our puppy, who had a slew of health issues. They know her name and even when I call and ask for a specific food, they go "oh are you Penny's mom". The front desk staff there are by far some of the friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. They go above and beyond! We have had a few different vets while there because we usually schedule last minute appointments, but regardless, every vet is aware of her little quirks and makes her feel comfortable. As first time dog owners we asked ALOT of questions and they are more than happy to answer each and every one. We've signed up for email alerts and they frequently offer discounts on various products. Cost wise, they are very affordable. We bring Penny in once a month to get her anal glands expressed, buy her food there, buy all of her heartworm and flea medications and spend alot less than when we were going to a vet out in the suburbs. This place is amazing. The entire staff is very patient and friendly. In particular, Dr. Waggener has been amazing in making a timid rescue feel right at home... to the point that he actually wants to visit when we go by the entrance on a normal walk. She's also takes her time to explain everything and make sure all of your questions are answered. The new location looks great and was smartly designed with spacious and bright exam rooms that don't make the animals feel closed in, as well as having other design features that really reflect how much they are about their patients. I have an older dog and when I went in for his yearly check up the vet tech recommended senior bloodwork This is my first dog on my own so I didn't really know what it meant. I thought dogs just needed yearly shots. They fully explained it to me and I was happy to do it. I love the techs and the doctors here, always happy to explain everything in full detail so I know where my money is going, and I feel like what they recommend is because they love my dog, too. The front desk is always so friendly and remembers my dog as soon as they see him come in. We moved to Boston a few months ago and needed to find a new vet for our dog. We chose South Boston Animal Hospital based on reviews. We were not happy about our visit and will NEVER go back. First of all, the wait time in the lobby was ridiculous. We were on time for our appointment, yet we had to wait over 1 hour to see the vet. We would have left at this point (probably should have) but needed to get our dog vaccinated. Finally when we were seen, the vet did a quick exam, didn't really answer any of our questions, and then focused the majority of the time on selling us some expensive dental dog food. She went so far as to compare our dog's current food to ""eating out of a trash can"" (our breeder as well as our previous vet were the ones who recommended the food - saying that it was a good quality and inexpensive choice). We found this vet to be really unprofessional and not knowledgable when answering our questions. Seriously, google did a better job answering our questions. To add to the sense that this Vet's primary interest is in making money , we just received a post card in the mail with a reminder that it's time for our dog's 1st grooming appointment. Did they miss the fact that our dog has short hair and doesn't shed? The only good thing we have to say about this vet is the office staff. They were friendly, professional, and helpful. Read Less

I bought a Dachshund puppy from a shady pet store in Lewisville, TX called Petland. DO NOT GO THERE. Dr Waggener helped bring Darla back to life. She had horrible kennel cough, coxcidia, and another type of worms. She spayed Darla yesterday and she is already feeling great. The entire staff is phenominal and they not only make you feel good about your pet, they make you completely comfortable with leaving your animal in their hands. I couldn't be happier with our vet. I have a nervous dog and Dr. Waggener does a great job treating him and keeping him calm and cooperative. Her ""bedside manner"" is great and she seems like she really cares about my dog's welfare. Parking has never been an issue for me (sorry South Boston Library!) and I've always been able to get appointments that are convienent to my schedule. This is my first time post -- beacuse it's for someone I truly do like I feel compelled to validate the positive posts below. First of all, I just had to say that I bet pet owners in Southie and all points local are very excited to have Dr. Waggener back at SBAH as the new owner and permanent vet :) I would also like to tell you that Dr. Waggener really does care about animals (and thier humans). She has been my lab Sadie's vet for some time now... She is currently treating my in-laws dog Cody and has been incredibly compassionate to my family and attentive to Cody's needs at this awful time, and I am very thankful for that! Please discount the post at the bottom: that man is the bad apple in the bunch. Dr. Waggener is the ANTI Dr. Kevorkian. I tell you, of all the vets we took our pup to (Neponset and Angell), SBAH is easily the most affordable. Not only that, Dr. Waggener is NOT afraid to refer her clients on to specialists if needs be. Ok I just wanted to respond to the review made by Hkadsfj on here.I was in the hospital when he was in there with his dog that day and heard him say that he was going to post here and really give Dr Waggener a bad name. Ok well you know how they always say every story has two sides?Well here is my side.I was in the hospital that morning buying food and when I came in I was alarmed by a man's voice just yelling at someone as soon as I came in.Then I could hear a woman's voice calmly start to talk. From what I could get from the what was going on the in other room was that the gentleman's dog had tried to bite at the Dr while the exam was going on. In that case I am sure Dr Waggener tried to defend herself. So after this man just continues to verbally abuse her they came out of the exam room and he she asks him to leave.He is continuing to say that his dog never ever bites anyone.Ok again,I was there folks.He had a rather large white dog that must have weighed close to a 100lbs.And on the way out the door this dog that is never aggressive and would never bite anyone tried to eat two little dogs that were waiting for their appointments. He had to use all his strength to keep his dog from attacking them.Now this was a grown man having trouble handling a dog that never bites.If he has trouble handling his own dog how could he expext Dr Waggener to defend herself if he attacked her?Especially since he had the attitude that his dog could do no wrong.This dog was aggressive and the owner is in total denail about it. It's really sad that he has to come on here and bash her like that.It's a review like his that could sink a hospital and make her leave again and we would be stuck with all crappy vets again.Everytime Dr Waggener has seen any of my pets she has been just terrific, and so many of my friends in South Boston could say the same. This is such a great place. I have been brining my pets to this hospital off and on for a long time. They would have a vet there that was ok for a while, then all of a sudden they would be gone. Then it seemed like there was a different vet there every day. So I just started going to Neponset. I was not that happy with them either. Then my cat was very sick and I brought him to South Boston Animal Hospital. I saw Dr Waggener. She was great. She was so attentive to my cat, even called me a few days later to see how he was doing. I brought him back in once he was better to get his vaccines and she was still there!! And I guess she is not going anywhere. I have heard from a friend of mine that goesthere also that she is buying the hospital!! I really hope this is true. It will be so great to have the same vet there all the time, and even better if it was her! Based on how she and the staff treated me and my cat I would tell anyone looking on here for a place to bring their pets to bring them to Dr Wagener at the South Boston Animal Hospital.
