Northampton Veterinary Clinic

Northampton, Massachusetts
General Info
Established in 1957 Northampton Veterinary Clinic was established in 1957 by Dr. Hugh Edmonds. In 1976 it was purchased by Dr. Russell Hansen and his wife Joyce. The Hansen's retired and sold the practice to Ellie Shelburne DVM and Lori L. Paporello JD, DVM on June 7th 2000. Dr. Shelburne and Dr. Paporello proudly retained Dr. Hansen's excellent staff and added more team members to take the hospital from a two-doctor practice to a very busy five-doctor practice.
Northampton Veterinary Clinic is a fully accredited AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) member, which means that we comply with the highest standards of hospital upkeep and patient care. Our hospital is regularly evaluated by trained AAHA professionals to ensure that we maintain these standards. We are very proud of the fact that we are an accredited AAHA hospital member. Only 15% of the small animal facilities in North America can claim this distinction.
Dr. Ellie Shelburne earned her BA in Biology at Yale University in 1989 followed by her DVM from Michigan State University in 1993. She practiced small animal medicine in Oregon for 7 years. While in Oregon, she co-founded the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. Dr. Shelburne moved back East in 2000 after purchasing the Northampton Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Paporello. Dr. Shelburne has a special interest in feline internal medicine and smaller animals such as rabbits and rats. Dr. Lori Paporello is a 1996 graduate of Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine and a 1990 graduate of Boston University School of Law. She practiced small animal veterinary medicine in Oregon for 4 years. Dr. Paporello has a special interest in ultrasound and has completed educational courses in abdominal ultrasound and echocardiograms. Both Dr. Shelburne and Dr. Paporello enjoy the Northampton community and can often be seen participating in local events or appearing on the news to educate the public.

***Please Read*** One star. This one star goes out to the receptionist with the dark colored hair. You ma'am, would get zero stars if possible. MAD rude. Went to pick up my wife's pup and no customers at the counter, it was my first time there and I stood waiting for while as I was unsure the rules on pickup. Eventually went to the counter (still no customers). The second I stepped up to ask what I was to do she instantly said she's handling another thing with a customer. Well, I just had a question but ok... Some way to be greeted... I work customer service at a counter and never would talk to someone like that. She should definitely not be working there. I was also pre warned about her for being super rude. If I didn't have respect for public places, I would of had some words with her. This woman is a f*****g b***c! Again, I highly suggest she gets a new job where she's not the first person you see when you walk into a place. Hide her in the back, for multiple reasons. Read Less

WHAT AN AMAZING CLINIC. While cat sitting for one of their long-time patients, I had the sad task of taking the very sick little man, Walter in to be put to sleep. He had a long amazing life and his family was abroad and we had all determined if it "was time", while they were away, I would consult and take him in. I had never set foot in this practice, I'm a long time pet owner with experiences at many vets over the years. From the moment I walked in the door to the moment I left - it was an bittersweet, yet amazing experience. The veterinarian, Dr. Kate DeLisle and the vet tech, Jeileen were so kind and caring for Walter and even ME, the "stranger" who came in. They were DILIGENT about making sure all the authorizations from Walter's owner were in place, while also being compassionate about caring for him in his last minutes. They had laid out fleece (plaid) blankets, and were expecting us when we walked in the door. Afterwards, they prepared a lovely box for Walter and even wrote his name and put a heart on the box. I'm so impressed with the care they took. I'd give 10 stars if I could! Read Less

I had recently moved to the area so I didn't have a veterinarian here yet, and one day while I was working from home my cat suddenly lost feeling in her lower legs and started throwing up so I called the closest place. Northampton veterinary talked me through setting up an appointment even though I was panicking, and got me in right away even though I hadn't been there before. The doctor was very good at explaining what was wrong with my cat in layman's terms, and didn't leave me confused, which can happen whenever medical terms are involved. I ended up having to put her down and the doctor and assistant were so kind about it that it made it an easier experience than it would have been otherwise. They also made sure to repeatedly assure me I was making the right decision -- because they know the worst thing is wondering. They even followed up afterwards to extend their sympathies, and it was such a kind gesture it brought tears to my eyes. I'm not ready quite yet for another cat but when I am this will be my vet no matter where in the valley I move to. Read Less

We got 2 kittens at different times fostered by staff members (thanks Misty!!) and they have taken care of all 4 of our cats,, as well as compassionately coached our family through the illness and deaths of our original 2 cats. We LOVE our vet. Everyone hear clearly cares about their patients, we usually see Dr. Paporello and will always sing her praises. We took in an FIV+ cat and both cats have eye herpes, so they've seen us more than once. We always get seen same day if there's an urgent issue, we are presented with thorough explanations and alternatives if applicable, and the compassionate bedside manner has always been appreciated. We know when we come in that our animals will be cared for in the best possible manner. We also know that having a pet (or pets) is expensive -- our priorities are the type of care, not the cost -- therefore I can't say whether Northampton Vet Clinic is more expensive than other locations (has been mentioned in other comments). That being said, I highly recommend this veterinary clinic and trust them with my animal's lives. Our cat got sick on a Friday night and we waited till Saturday morning to call our vet for an emergency visit. we were told that they did not have a vet on staff on the weekends. I then called other local vets(greenfield area) and to my surprise none of them had vets working as well. I then found Northampton Veterinary Clinic which has a vet on Saturdays. when I called, the woman who answered to phone was very nice. When I asked if they had a vet on Saturdays she said "of course we do, animals get sick on weekends too." Made me feel good that they are there for me if I need them. When we got there the receptionist was again very nice and concerned about my kitty. we only had to wait about 5 minutes until we got called in. My kitty had peed in his carrier so while he was getting checked out they bagged up his blanket, washed out the carrier and put in a new towel for him. ( I didn't expect that and was very please with the hospitality). Before any treatments were performed they itemized them and priced them all out and explained each one to me so I could make and informed decision as to the treatments I wanted/needed for my cat. Because this was an emergency visit there was a $75 charge which was explained to me over the phone before I even got there. This visit was much cheaper than if I had gone to any emergency vet. I was very happy with my visit there and will definitely be going back for regular visits and emergencies.Read Less

Attention pet lovers .....this is my honest relation of my experiences at this business. Pet care was good sales pitch type examinations awful...Here is my story. 1. We took our dog there with a abcess on her neck .by the time the visit was over the cost was $275 & I was somewhat pressured for a very expensive surgery to remove the abcess ....I elected to take the antibiotics therapy first and see what happens ...our dog healed fine on antibiotics . Saving us near $1000 . ..mildly unhappy with high pressure sales pitch...but dog healed nicely and that's what is important. 2. the following year we took the same  dog in for pyometra emergency surgery . Staff was friendly and dog recovered nicely ...no complaints....cost again around $1000 however emergency life threatening surgery is expensive....I guess. 3. Took our other pet pooch in to have a lump examined. Wow! I felt as if I was in a timeshare sales pitch . I was left confused and dazed. ....unfortunately the lump turned out to be a mast cell tumor requiring immediate surgery. However, Instead of concentrating on the issue at hand I was pitched vaccines and elective surgery etc etc etc ...by the time I left my head was spinning ...not to mention my wallet had been drained. Finally I get a call to bring my pet back in because of a inconclusive result on a blood test ...after getting the worse news possible we were once again bombarded with more and more costly procedures on top of the surgerical removal of the mast cell tumor ...next thing I know im getting estimates for the tumor surgery plus spaying and future vaccines schedules ...again by the time I left my head was spinnning . Finally , when we got home and our heads cleared we decided to take one step at a time and treat the Mast Cell tumor .first ...so when we called to cancel the spay etc etc .... we once again met resistance....at this point I had enough of the sales pitch and pulled my pets from this situation and now im taking them to someone that hopeful will treat me more like the emotionally devastated owner of a poor little sick pup than someone to stack procedure after procedure on ...very annoyed with the final contact.I will not be back.Final thought  ....in defense of the business my pets have recovered nicely on two of three procedures....health care good ...owner/patient relations ie..bedside manner awful...I am not gonna be pressured into anything ...not when it comes to cars , houses definitely not pet care . Now I have lost all trust and confidence concerning the entire situation..sux.. The whole experience has left me feeling horrible and wicked worried about the prognosis and outcome of the mast cell tumor business ...now I have to change vets in mid stream . Sux.sux sux sux ! :-( Read Less

We have brought cats, dogs, rabbits, and one hamster here over the years. As happens with pets, there have been a bunch of mundane visits and some very sad ones. I have consistently found the doctors, techs, and office staff, to be professional and compassionate. The doctors offer a range of options. Since they don't know how much people can afford or how much intervention people want, it is a very delicate business. I have had to have these very hard conversations and the doctors were excellent. When I have asked for their judgement in addition to their medical opinion, they gave that as well. I trust this practice. The techs and docs (especially the techs) are openly enthusiastic about the animals we bring in which helps to put us at ease. There is one doc who I don't find to be as interpersonally skillful, but it isn't enough to have me ask not to have her. The other three docs are just a much better match for me. Read Less

The docs are probably as good as any others in the area, but the service is terrible. I went there for the first year and a half when I first got my dog, and every single time I had to wait at least twenty minutes in a very small waiting area (one small bench for the dogs, even smaller for cats). The staff did not seem to care one bit that you are waiting there anxiously with your pet and acted like you should be grateful to even be there. They even wrote in my dog's file every time I complained! I did not have the same experience with the tests other people mentioned but then I had a young healthy dog. Maybe it's just veterinary medicine in general, and the advances it has made over the past decade. But these people, despite their apparent niceness, are also running a business, and they understand that people treat their dogs and cats like children, and that some are willing to spend colossal amounts of money to give their animals the same medical procedures as they would a family member. I can't stand being guilt-tripped because I don't want to spend $800 to "rule out" X or Y. I love my dog, but this is a DOG we're talking about. So I found a wonderful and humane vet closer to my house, who charges half as much, and doesn't market to pet owners with guilt and fear. It's a relief. Who wants to leave a vet feeling all knotted up inside? Not me. Read Less

The people who work here will scam pet owners who only want the best for their pet. I took in a cat with a runny nose, and before I left they had done over $100 of blood work, then they called because the bloodwork indicated the need for a second panel (+75). They diagnosed a faulty feline thyroid -- which when I had another vet look at the same bloodwork results, were confirmed as nonsense. And the runny nose? Never diagnosed. Other friends have had similar experiences! Don't let pet-sentiment fool you into more-testing-and-treatment! Read Less

Northampton Veterinary Clinic

Northampton, Massachusetts
(48)
227 South Street
Northampton Massachusetts 01060

Read Less

Read Less

I used Northampton Veterinary Clinic (Dr. Shelburne) with my first cat, & I'm happy to be back with my two new kitties (Dr. Paporello). The people here are lovely--veterinary staff,  techs, & receptionists alike. No one is "scamming" anyone. It is simply their level of devotion to animals (which can be compared to the level of devotion pediatricians have for children). Under Dr. Shelburne's care, my first cat's thyroid condition was diagnosed & treated (a necessary treatment), among other issues, & I give her some of the credit for her long & healthy life. This may not be the right fit for everyone. But there's no doubt in my mind that the staff here is only concerned with the welfare of their patients, and that works for me. Read Less

Northampton Vet Clinic has been wonderful for us.  They were incredibly kind and gentle when we had to put down one of our cats.  They have helped us with two other cats and our dogs.  Their bedside manor is impeccable and they are very knowledgeable about the care of our animals.  Their receptionists know more than many vet techs I've worked with.  They do let you know what all your medical options are and then you have to be an informed consumer when you decide what you are going to do or not do for your animals.  I would rather have people give me all the information and let me make a decisions than have vets who don't know what to offer us. I am so happy not to be going there anymore, even though it is the most convenient one to my house. I have had many experiences with people telling me that they also wait & wait. Ridiculous! I've been taking my cat here for a couple of years and am happy with the service and staff. I've only ever had to take my cat here for routine care, so I can't speak to the other reviews that they push procedures to make money, though. Making appointments is easy and the vet and vet techs take the time to listen to my concerns and thoroughly examine my cat while making her feel safe. Read Less

After a few years going here (because I was too lazy to think of any alternatives) I've recently decided to stop going here. Friends have stopped going for the very same reason. The issue? Fear and guilt. The people who work here are very nice, but they use those two emotions like a pair of clubs. Bloodwork, X-rays, MRIs, etc. Before you know it you have racked up $100s of dollars in medical procedures. Now, maybe it's not their fault.

Read Less
