I've only gone to see a Dr. there one time in the year I have lived in Salem. It took about 3 months to actually see a vet For my 17 year old cat because the clinic was always canceling and rebooking my appointment. My cat's issue was her constant grooming certain areas of her body until she had bald spots. By the time we saw a Dr. she wasn't doing that anymore and her fur was growing back in nicely. I am using online supplements to keep this from happening again -which I started giving to my cat 2 months before she was seen. I will as told only that she needs to have about 6 teeth pulled. The dr took all my information about the supplements- and that was that! I am not going to put my cat under anesthesia and have her teeth pulled because of her age. I had been warned about this by other vets because of the risk she wouldn't come out of the anesthesia and die.( Something that the Dr here wasn't bothered about) Read Less

The best and only place I will take my cat in the future to. Friendliest and most professional people ever, from the receptionist to the doctors. They knew how to handle my cat from the beginning and gave my cat a full checkup. As they did this, they educated me about his health, behaviour, and future signs. My cat gets anxious and becomes violent whenever we went to the vet, but not here. My cat sensed it was for cats only. I love this place, their care, and professionalism. Read Less

I was cynical about the need for a vet practice devoted to cats alone until I went here. It's a completely different experience than a vet practice serving everybody. To begin with, it's in a creaky old Victorian house. The waiting room is very quiet and serene with no dogs barking or walking around sniffing or trying to make friends with terrified cats. (btw I love dogs.) . Everybody just sits there with their cats in carriers and maybe nibbles on the tea and cookies on a side table. Eventually when you're called in for your appt, you get the full attentention of the vet. Yes it can take time to get an appointment but that speaks to how much people love this place. Since I've been coming here (about four years) I've been lucky enough to have my cats attended to by Dr. Bird (now retiring) who is the most knowledgeable, skilled, and compassionate veterinarian I've ever used. Really, I can't say enough about her or this unique and amazing place. Read Less

I took 2 stars off for disorganization & poor scheduling. The doctors are very knowledgeable & great with handling cats. My only issue with this practice is their disorganization & inability to stay on schedule. I understand that emergencies do happen at times, which could cause a delay. However, every appointment I have had has been delayed by 30-45 minutes. This is a major inconvenience when I'm taking time out of my work day. Today I had to wait 45 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. When I stated that I was pressed for time, I received a rude & unapologetic response from Dr. Bird basically saying that they always run late & I will just need to deal with it or reschedule my appointment. So...I'm supposed to reschedule & take more time out of my schedule because THEY were in the wrong? I don't see how that is good client service. In summary, they are excellent with felines & worth the inconvenience. My only recommendation would be to schedule an appointment on a day you have nothing else to do. I would also recommend seeing Dr. Ternes as she has the best attitude towards both the cats & the cat parents. Read Less

I have been a client of TFH for 26 years!! Full disclosure, I am also a staff member, but considering that I have been a client for 22 years longer than I have been a staff member, I feel that I can justifiably write a review :-) There is simply NO other place I would consider taking my cats. All of the doctors are top notch specialists and Dr. Ternes is one of only two board certified feline specialists in the whole state of Massachusetts. These doctors LIVE the profession! They are all deeply passionate about cats, veterinary medicine, educating people about cats and furthering their own educations - all things that I know I want in my veterinarian! My cats are cherished family members and they deserve only the very best - and there is no question that they receive the very best at TFH. Every single cat is treated as if it were one of the staff's own cats - from the stray brought in by a caring Good Samaritan to the treasured family cat. In addition to the excellent doctors, there is also a technician and two receptionists who have been with the practice for over 20 years - that says a whole lot about the kind of place TFH is. It is a very caring practice and there is a strong sense of family/community among the long-term staff and clients. Dr. Ternes has saved the lives of many of my babies countless times - the amazing Purry Mason went on to live for another 5 years because Dr. T caught and diagnosed his acute cholangiohepatitis early. She also saved Willow's life by convincing the ER doctor's of the proper way to treat an FIV+ cat in asthma related acute respiratory distress. She diagnosed Sully's immune mediated poly arthritis in a single visit - even thought it was the only case she had ever seen in all her years of practice! And Tag is going strong on his oral chemo protocol 3.5 YEARS after being diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma... I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, there is simply no better doctor and no better hospital out there. If you are a cat person and you live within driving distance, I would strongly recommend checking out TFH!Read Less

I have two very gentle rescue cats. When I lived in another town, I was taking them to a vet who seemed to love dogs but didn't care for cats. The vets at the Feline Hospital love cats. They know cats. They don't treat them like unruly dogs. Going to this office is a different experience than going to a regular vet's office. The office is a little Victorian house with tea and cookies in the parlor (no need to worry about the cookies disappearing since there are no dogs). It's very quiet, usually, with all the cats in their carriers in the parlor waiting their turn. There are two housecats who wander in and out of the room. I've never heard them hiss or be hissed at my any of the cats. It's a different experience and as much as a person can like taking a cat to the vet's, it's enjoyable. Read Less

This is a Vet dedicated to Feline Health! Everyone working here loves and understand cats! Most vets handle dogs and cats which would stress out my cats but not anymore! Both Doctors feline knowledge is far superior as they are specialists. I really enjoy that everyone from the receptionist, vet techs, to the Doctors themselves do speak to you, the pet owner, as if you have a decent base of knowledge. It's wonderful that they do not speak in medical terms that above your head and this balance I really appreciate! Three of my four cats have ended up having to come in over the past 3 weeks. The first with unexpected crystals and everything from his appointment, subsequent treatment, follow-up visit, and multiple follow-up calls from the vet has been excellent! You know they did an excellent job when you go to pick-up your cat and he snuggles the Doctor prior to heading home after having been catheterized for 3 days. I cannot thank them enough for everything. Two of the other cats I've just transferred to this vet because of the comments above! These 2 became ill with food that didn't agree with their systems and both were also excellently assessed & treated! The 4th will be coming in June for his yearly visit and I know everything will be great!Read Less

Cats are different and need a different space. Like this one. It's an old Victorian house and the waiting room has cookies and coffee and a view of the cove across the street. When I was there it was very quiet, even though three cats in carriers were waiting for the vets. I think they were quiet because the office was quiet; there wasn't that hustle bustle quality in most vets offices I'd been in before. -- I had an appt but there were some emergencies before me so I had a wait to see the vet, Dr. Bird. She was wonderful. My cat was there as a new patient and Dr. Bird took a long time -- nearly an hour -- going over my cat's history, diet, answering my questions and eventually the exam. I need to bring my cat back in to get her spayed and Dr. Bird said they don't use cones of shame after surgery. (She didn't use that term but you know...) Right then I knew how different this place really was. One size doesn't fit all with vets. Cats are different. One thing I want to add is about the staff at the desk. They were amazingly patient with me. I can to cancel three times -- once 10 minutes before my appt because I literally couldn't reach where my cat had hidden herself. The woman at the desk, Jane, took it all in stride and completely understood. She urged me to make an appt the following week because they were closing to new patients for a while. I did and now I've got a new vet. Read Less

The reason for the four stars is because one of their receptionists is a witch (and being in Salem is no excuse). She is rude, unprofessional and is high time they replaced her, but maybe they are just too nice to get rid of her.On the other hand, the vets are pinnacles of professionalism. I'm a little disappointed by another reviewer badmouthing Dr. Ternes over something as simple as a possible miscommunication. This woman called us from her home over the weekend, recovering from foot surgery inquiring about our cat who was treated at MassVet after an emergency, offering very valuable advice for his aftercare. I challenge anyone to name another vet who'd do that. She also successfully talked us out of a very costly and totally unnecessary surgery which MassVet swore up and down was needed. Also, for the record, one of our cats is also a nightmare at the vet, all 7.5 lbs of her, and Dr. Ternes is the only one with the touch and the patience to handle her. Read Less

They were very compassionate, and while we were waiting for the Doctor (just a few minutes) he took his last breath and passed. It was a solemn moment - and here in the Feline Hospital it was quiet and respectful - no dogs barking or birds chattering to disturb his final thoughts. He shared his entire life with ours - thru so many ups and downs I can't even start to tell. And he lived his life to the fullest right up to the end. ugh. avoid, avoid, avoid. I had an awful experieince when I took my two cats there. One cat is a nightmare at the vet's- he lashes out at anything and everything, including me; the other is totally relaxed.I took both cats to the vet and we met w/Dr. Ternes. I specifically told her that I did not want her cutting either cats' claws b/c my husband does them at home and they are much more calm. So after stepping out of the room to check on the unhappy cat, I hear the calm cat yelling and see her cutting his claws. WTF?!?! Didn't I already tell her not to cut the cats' claws? Yes I did. As we were finishing up she told me that I should get some pheremone spray for their carriers so they'll be more calm when she sees them again. Conveniently, they sell that spray for $30. Then she wanted me to buy a huge bag of Science Diet. I explained that we didn't feed our cats that b/c it's a lot of by-product and our cat has slimmed down since we changed it up to something better and healthier. Of course she came back with, "I've been feeding my cats this for x number of years." Whatever. When your patient/ patient's owner has just told you how it is, don't argue. Then we go to check out and lo and behold, the big bag of food I said I didn't want was there along w/the "pheremone spray". I had those removed from the bill, just paid for the actual visit, immediately got a copy of the visit note and never went back.I now take the cats to Dr. Bradt at All Creatures and the cats and I are much happier w/a vet who listens, meets their needs and doesn't push products. After my bad experiences with the Danvers Animal Hospital, I called around to interview for a new vet. The Feline Hospital receptionist did her best to answer my questions, I was mostly calling around to make sure they didn't have any kind of agenda. Seriously, one place was against dry food because they claimed it has too many calories. That makes no sense as an across the board position. In any case, the feline hospital was friendly and thorough. The cats had been having some problems lately so we did a full new patient work up, and fecal for both plus urine analysis for one cat. It was a little expensive, $230 I think, but we were there, mostly in with the vet, for an hour and a half. I left feeling very good about the care my cats were receiving.Just a warning though, they don't take many new patients. The receptionist said they prefer to keep the practice small so patients can receive better care. Kathleen Ternes and The Feline Hospital staff are wonderful people. They cared for my cats for many years when I lived in Massachusetts (I'm now in rural Arizona). It's an awesome experience when the vet you entrust to care for your beloved pet(s) shows concern and compassion for you, as well. Dr. Ternes is all that and more, and I sincerely wish that I could clone her. My 17-year-old cat, Chico, died yesterday morning. He was still active and very healthy for an old man, but he became critically ill late Saturday night. I called my vet's home at 1:00 a.m. to ask her to euthanize him so he wouldn't have to suffer through the night. (I knew he wasn't going to recover from this and only wanted to alleviate any pain he might have been experiencing.) But she was out of town and wouldn't return for 24 hours, and there was nobody on call for emergencies. So I could only make my sweet cat as comfortable as possible and pray that he passed quickly on his own. Chico apparently died just before I woke up (his body was still warm). My vet's husband said I could bring his body in for cremation and that he would tell his wife what happened when she returned home last night. This is a town of only about 1,100 people; my vet doesn't have a large practice where a person might get lost in the shuffle. But she hasn't even bothered to call me to convey her condolences or to see how I'm doing, notwithstanding the fact that she's been caring for my pets for over two years now and I was a blubbering mess when I saw her husband yesterday. But my loss is apparently no big deal to her, and I'm disgusted. I expect more from my veterinarian, thanks to Dr. Ternes, and this experience only makes me miss her and The Feline Hospital that much more. Dr. Ternes is in the right profession for the right reasons. We need more veterinarians like her in the world. God speed, Chico. I truly loved you and will miss your beautiful face and wonderful personality forever. Read Less

Everyone here, from the vets themselves to the techs and receptionists love him and have even kindly given us some donated meds which have saved us much needed money. One of the staff emails me on almost a daily basis to see how he's doing with suggestions on food to try, which doesn't include buying products they sell, but things that have worked on their own sick cats.

Read Less

Wow - I'm amazed to see negative reviews about Feline Hospital - seriously?I'm on my second generation of cats with them, been a loyal customer since they opened and would never take my cats anywhere else. Dr. Bird & Dr. Ternes are cat pediatricians, basically, I wish I had a human clinic of this caliber! Their follow-up is amazing as well, and I know these folks are busy and work long hours, but Dr. Bird always calls me in follow-up to any issues - I've actually taken to calling them instead to save her the time.... Likewise the technicians and the receptionists are all very personal and caring, and friendly. Our eighteen year old Mowgli had been losing weight and growing ever more frail. This morning he could not even move, so we brought him to the Feline Hospital. Just yesterday he begged to go outside, where he stumbled thru the spring grass and basked in the sun - then purred like crazy. We miss him terribly. Read Less

ugh. avoid, avoid, avoid. I only got in because they took pity on me after the bad time I had at the other vet and my cats have special needs. Read Less

Read Less
