After having our female basset hound treated this morning, we could not be more pleased with the caring and compassion of the knowledgeable Veterinary staff. Another pleasant surprise was the bill which was substantially less than at other emergency Veterinary hospitals. There is nothing negative to say about Bay State. Our fur baby loved them oh, and they loved her. Can't ask for better than that! Read Less

I brought my youngest in a few months back. His primary care vet had referred us to an emergency vet and we chose Bay State. My youngest was having issues breathing and had a urinary blockage. Immediately after we arrived and stated what was wrong, the receptionist called someone up front to take him in the back. We had to wait a while to learn more, but we knew they were going to help. When we finally talked to the treating vet, she explained what we were dealing with, that plan of action, and what the next steps were. I felt she was very professional and compassionate at the same time. Our little man came close to meeting his maker that night, but he pulled through. The treating vet was able to get him to urinate (couldn't catheterize him due to a reaction to anesthetics) and get his breathing back to normal. He was able to come home the next night and we were so happy to have him back. The only thing that makes this four stars vs five stars is the fact that it took THREE months to get our refund. Since they didn't do all the treatment they planned, they owed us almost $400. It took THREE months to get the refund. Thankfully, I had Care Credit so I hadn't actually spent that money yet. But for someone that didn't have Care Credit, I could see how this would be extremely frustrating. Read Less

So this place as far as care is actually really good. My problem is that I made an appointment months in advance for boarding. So the night before I'm leaving I bring my dog. I was told 28 dollars per day, fine. I show up they say 75 dollars a day plus 16 dollars a day to give him a pill twice a day that to him is like a treat that he loves. So I said what. I leaving in the morning and tell me this. They want almost 800 dollars for 8 days. So I left, absolutely scum bags scum scum scum Read Less

I had adopted a cat from Providence Animal Control who was having some pretty bad health problems unexpectedly. I live on the Cape, and had been taking my cat to a local vet. Providence Animal Control recommended taking my furry friend to Bay State. I didn't want to put my kitty through the drive, but I'm glad I did. They made me feel certain they would make my cat better, and they did. The techs were not just professional, but loving to my poor, scared guy. Thank you for getting my friend better! I unfortunately had to bring my female senior dog in because she was throwing up blood on a Saturday afternoon. I had thought she must have ate something unusual or something?! Within an hour or so - they had taken X-rays and established what the problem was. Sadly, she had a large (likely cancerous) mass on her chest that was starting to grow big enough to affect her lungs. Due to her age (13) I did not think chemotherapy would be a good option for her but they made sure to give me all of my options anyway so I could make that choice feeling well informed. They sent us home with a cough suppressant/ pain reliever to keep her comfortable and forwarded the X-rays and lab work up to my usual vets office. I found the staff to be very caring and informed. My sweet girl passed 2 months later and while I am glad she never had to end up back at the emergency vets office again - i would gladly bring another pet if need be and would recommend them whenever there is an emergency situation or your regular vet is just not available. The staff is very nice. I'll say that. But that's all I'll say. The meds they gave me for my cat made him so much worse and killed him. Apparently you get what you pay for. I drone out of my way to go here as others said they had great experiences with their dogs. I guess dogs are what they're good at as I'm obviously not impressed with their cat treatment since mine is now gone from the meds they prescribed. Read Less

My poor kitten has been going through a lot and I've been in contact weekly with this place. Every call and visit has been handled with genuine care. Our 10 mos old French Bulldog was subject to chlorine fumes from our hot tub.  He was in a large room however it effected him horribly.We took him to Bay State because we have had excellent service from them IN THE PAST.  This time was horrible.  Dr.  Pancoast not only  wasted a great amount of time talking to us about "what could happen" instead of handling the situation that "was" happening..my dog sitting in our lap right in front of her struggling to breath.  She demanded we get the bottle of chemical so we can call the poison control center before she would treat him.  I asked her to please begin treating him with oxygen and my husband will run home to get the container.  What vet will stand there and watch a dog suffer so she can repeat the same thing over and over  and in my view "waste time" ?Finally she took him for xrays to see if she could see aspiration. My husband came back with the container and we called poison control center. They collected 65 dollars before they would give us any information. They concluded that if the product was used according to package instructions there should be no problem.  The next thing we know Dr. Pancoast came in and recommended she do a list of blood test...not for the problem at hand but to rule out any other problems. She actually said "he may have gotten into something. Maybe he ate a mushroom."  I'm pretty sure there are no mushrooms in my house and I also know what he has access to and therefore am confident that his problem is directly related to the fumes.  Still she persisted on testing him for a rainbow of other non-pertinent issues.  He is a healthy puppy with NO history of any problems.  She turned around an estimate of these "test"  $2600.   There you go.  In the building 30 minutes and she's insisting I need all of these test done....because if it was her dog that's what she would do.  I'm betting if it was her dog she wouldn't have stood there unnecessarily talking about "what could be" while her dog was struggling to breathe. I refused and stated I wanted to take him home.  He did receive oxygen and she did do xrays and stated there was no sign of aspiration though she still "strongly recommended the test and now for him to stay overnight."  First you said.."I need xrays because he may have aspirated. " Ok now you say he didn't but he should stay overnight.  Frankly I was very uncomfortable with Dr. Pancoast and did not feel that she had  my dogs best interest.  Her interest was however on the paper that showed an estimate of $2600.  She made me sign a waiver.  The tech brought out my dog and he looked 100% better than when we arrived. He needed fresh air.  Bottom line!!!! I'm not saying I will never go back to Bay State. They are usually very understanding and helpful with information.  However in the unfortunate event we need to make another emergency room visit I will call first to see what doctor is on.  Fortunately we have a couple other local emergency rooms so I will not have to meet with Dr.Pancoast in the future. We brought our dog Sammie in so that she could get an ultrasound. She was a very sick doggie! The staff was great to us, and the vet, Dr. Silva gave Sammie the most thorough exam any of my dogs have ever had. She took the time to ask us dozens of questions about Sammie's illness, and her history, and did so in a non-rushed, understanding manner. Sammie is feeling much better now, and we thank Dr. Silva and Bay State for helping to get her healthy again.The prices were very reasonable, especially for the services Sammie received.Thanking you for helping our baby get healthy again! Staff is very friendly and helpful. My boxer Rhody had an appointment scheduled with his regular vet at Caws next Thursday for a small mass that recently developed on his ear. Apparently he didn't feel like waiting so he scratched the little lump on his ear until it bled while I was at work. These things always have awful timing. I actually had plans to go out with my best friend for her birthday for dinner. So we cleaned, bandaged and put a cone on him. I came home and bandaid was still on. Then He started doing that head shaky thing. Blood....everywhere.....I initially called North Paws in Greenville but they were too busy and sent me to Ocean State. Since this office was closer and I had work in AM I gave it a try.They offered to keep him overnight and remove mass (which is going to happen hopefully soon- I got earlier appt with Coventry this Monday). I declined because he gets anxious when he's away from home for too long. He was adopted and we are his 3rd home so I always feel like he's afraid he'll be abandon again. I get a pet sitter, never board him. I'm that crazy dog mom....So they bandaged and wrapped his ear. The bleeding stopped. He's a head shaker so it was a struggle to keep his little red doggie hair net on. It kept slipping off and bandage fell off next day. Not their fault, he's a pest. I thought I may have to bring him back and called. They said they could rebandage him and would charge follow up fee (less $). I didn't need to bring him back since it stopped bleeding but I thought that was very fair. Overall I was very happy with the care my dog received. The staff is friendly and kind. I insisted on paying any amount of money to run more tests to ensure my best friend was ok. The staff insisted those tests were unnecessary and that my buddy was ok. So they aren't just about money, they could've taken advantage of me financially and the didn't, unlike a high percentage of most veterinarians. I highly recommended the staff at Baystate. I've never been given that kind of 1 on 1 attention from a veterinarian or technician at any animal hospital. Impressed! We have been there many times with our dog Zeus and the staff is fantastic! They are kind, professional, knowledgeable and most importantly helped my dog heal each and every time. I don't even go to my regular vet anymore because they are so much more knowledgeable! My daughter has been to them several times with emergencies with her dogs and feels the same way. Horrible!!! Brought my cat in last night because he wasn't urinating... They told me his urine had crystals and sent me home with meds... Eight hours later my cat could barely move... I called the next morning and spoke to the rudest doctor who was only concerned about getting money from me and not my animal... Absolutely no help or resources for financial assistance and not caring or compassionate at all. I will never bring any of my animals back! I brought Whiskers to a different hospital today and he was admitted and given a catheter right away no questions asked. This is a life threatening issue and Bay State could have cared less!! My healthy 6 month puppy just died here !!! Brought in my 6 month old Shih Tzu for a ‘surgical consult’ for a common surgery and in the 15 minutes I was there they took him in back and he died !! I was told “cardiac arrest” ? He was just seen at my regular Vet 4 DAYS EARLIER and I was told by my Vet he was a “very healthy puppy” !! ... this place did something wrong, I’ll never ever know the truth nor be able to prove what really happened. I brought my dog in who has kidney failure and they were able to calmly provide us with the accurate information to give us the knowledge of what we needed to do to help him. I can’t say enough about how amazing the vet was to him. Read Less

Every single employee was very respectful, soft-spoken, and well-informed, besides one. We had brought our cat in after he went through a stroke and the first nurse to come and take him suggested we go elsewhere and left to get someone else because we were insistent on getting him treated first only because he was very verbally crying in pain, and answering questions later. Another told us we were overreacting a little when we'd asked for that employees name while we were hysterical over having to put our animal down that night. I understand money matters, but even if we didn't have the money at that time, I would've gladly sold half my belongings to pay the bills if it meant easing his pain. Read Less

The following note was sent to Bay State. I have only had positive experiences there except for this one time with " Cheryl" or " SheryI" . I'm hoping she was just having a bad day and this type of behavior was an outlier. I just spoke with " S/Cheryl" tonight/this morning at 12:55 AM, 6/23/17.I asked for records of my dog Howie's ultrasound to be sent to me. I was told by the receptionist and the lady who took my dog Howie to see the doctor that i would get the e-mail by around 7PM.Cheryl said that I did not pay for a consultation and , because of that, I could not be sent the e-mails.I , in a calm yet firm tone, asked why, as the client/person who paid for the visit, I could not get the records., She told me to call Chris in the morning and explain. I then asked Cheryl to please leave message for Chris saying I would like the info to be sent to me. Cheryl once again  repeated the whole consultation reason, the said she did not need to be yelled at atand then  hung up on  me.I called back immediately and said that I was sorry she interpreted my tone of voice as " yelling" but thay, under no circumstances should a client be hung up on. She hung up on me a second time.It's my word against hers. I hope you have the faith and knowledge in/of your staff to believe her more than me. Otherwise, I doubt you would tolerate this behavior. At 2am my dog was coughing/gagging/vomiting and I was a nervous wreck. I called bay state and they were very kind telling me it did not sound like an emergency but I could still bring him in - we did go as he didn't stop. The ladies (who I am sorry I don't have their names) and Dr. Young were amazing. They were kind and gentle with my dog, and didn't make me feel crazy for bringing him in. They diagnosed my pup and gave me thorough discharge paperwork with some medicine. I was expecting a huge bill considering it was emergency but it was completely reasonable. I highly recommend anyone go to Bay State if you're worried in the middle of the night about your fur baby! Read Less

Not very impressed. Maybe it was just the doctor on call the night I went, because I've had friends who've had great experiences here.. My dog had been vomiting up foam and mucous, not eating/drinking for 3 days, he could barely walk or open his, super weak and his body was limp. I took him here and they cut his nails.. gave me no advice on what to do about his illness or signs to watch out for or things I could to to make him feel better or figure out why he was so sick. He's a 5 pound chihuahua so the little guy can't really afford to lose any weight. They took him in the back and told me nothing. Not sure if they weighed him, or did vitals, or anything actually pertaining to why I took him in $145 for a nail clipping? I would have taken him to the groomers if that was my concern. Really bad experience here. Brought my senior cat in for not eating. Apparently he had yellow skin (still don't see it really..he's buff colored). Many tests and dollars later, they guess it's a gall bladder and give antibiotics (and also an unnecessary eye drop) for 2 weeks. They even drove a blood sample to a pathologist for his opinion...I was a bit impressed. BUT: My fiance went to pick him up and was kept waiting for 2 hours. I guess the tech was in surgery? He rarely complains but said he was hoping to not go back there. Unfortunately, still not better 2 weeks later, my fiancé attempts an appointment telling them he may be late because of a meeting in Boston (traffic). He calls in to say he will in fact, be late and gets attitude from another receptionist. Was actually reprimanded. Another doctor wants to run all the tests again plus possible aspiration of organs to determine the issue. $1800 estimate again (after paying $1100 the first time). We just can't do that and started asking her opinion because in all honesty, the cat is 11 and we wouldn't put him through extreme measures at that age. She gets impatient and actually says "what is it you're looking for from me"....um...maybe a little understanding and sympathy for 2 people making literally, a life or death decision here?? Also, during the visit, before getting our estimate, she was checking her watch repeatedly. I'm really, really sorry we are taking up your time with something that is so devastating to us. Once she realized spending another $2-$3000 on our pet was actually a concern, she was even more abrupt. Apparently you are required to make important decisions about your pet's life within 5 minutes. We ended up getting blood work and an ultrasound. They still don't know but based on that they are guessing cancer. Still don't understand how we get to totally different results from the same tests, but whatever. We took our baby home because he has started eating again and is happy for now. When his time comes, we will not be bringing him or any of our pets there. Ever. I worked for a veterinarian. It was the most awesome job I ever had and we all loved animals. It's why we did what we did. Taking care of the humans was just as important to us. These people? Just don't care. From the moment I set foot in this building with my sick dog PeeWee, I felt like I had made the right decision. The building is bright and very clean, the receptionists were caring and patient, and we were attended to quickly. I was very anxious when I arrived because I had had two previous dogs who had similar symptoms to Peewee's, and both had serious outcomes. But as soon as I saw a vet tech, and PeeWee was scooped up and taken care of quickly, I began to relax. The veterinarian who consulted with me was extremely intelligent and kind, and because of both qualities, showed her competence. Luckily, Peewee is going to be fine with some medication, and will hopefully live to run on Gooseberry Island a zillion more days. Thank you all so much. I have been going to this location now for years with numerous of my pets. The last two times I felt very disrespected and for that I will not be returning. I brought my Chihuahua Prince in because he needed his anal glands express. Well because I smelled like marijuana the vet tech constantly accused my dog of being high. First off I am from Rhode Island and have a medical card, secondly my dog has a history of anal gland issues. The tech did not give my dog the care he deserved because of how his owner smelled. I have never heard of such a thing. And the second time I was there for a long time because of an emergency ahead of me. Which i understood but after that long I could not hold my dog anymore. He was walking around the waiting room where many techs and the secretary had seen him. He went to the bathroom and this SAME vet tech as last time told me I needed to hold my dog the entire time. I don't remember his name but I can describe him perfectly. He was average height and skinny but the defining thing is he has a LONG beard, like past his chest long. I have spent THOUSANDS here one time 1300 just on one cat. I never needed to be treated like that. I will also never return unless that SPECIFIC vet tech apologies to me! Read Less

Do NOT bring your animal hereI totally forgot to write this review until now but my cat last year was having serious difficulty breathing. She was wheezing and coughing non stop. The thing about my cat is she HATES the vet, so much so that even when she's sick she will use all her strength to fight them off. Because of this they said its obviously nothing serious because of how she's acting. It got worse, I brought her back in they did some x-rays and found nothing and said she was fine again because of how she was acting. 2 days go by and I'm pretty sure that she's non going to make it, she could barely breath she hadn't eaten in 5 days, and at this point I had paid this place close to $1000 for them to tell me NOTHING. I finally found a place in providence 100% devoted to cats that would see her even though I had no money left. Within 20 minutes the found she has a serious infection and her lung had collapsed because she had probably inhaled her own throw up. Long story short the people at this animal hospital are LAZY and don't want to do their jobs and stole my money. DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMALS HERE. Read Less

So impressed with the staff here! Last night, we took our 9 week old puppy to Bay State because her belly had been extremely bloated all day and she was breathing funny. I feared she may have bloat which can be a potentially life threatening and time sensitive condition in dogs. When we arrived at bay state they took her right in, we didn't have to wait at all. Even though the vet tech said bloat was unlikely, they treated the situation with precaution and got her to ultrasound immediately. Moments later they came out and told us she didn't have bloat and was just a little piggy and ate too much. They said the ultrasound showed a belly full of food and that she would be fine. Not only did we receive immediate and thorough care, but they didn't charge us anything. We were so impressed by this. They could have easily charged us a radiology fee but they didn't.  I would absolutely take any of my pets back here, and I would recommend Bay State to all my friends and family. Read Less

When I was first referred to this vet I have to admit I was skeptical. I had a bad experience with another emergency vet service and expected the same "talk and run" service. However, When I met with the vet tech who was with my cat I could tell it would be a much better experience. She took her time and paid attention to my pet I could tell she really cared. I didn't expect the same from the vet, as like most doctors, they tend to diagnose and run. Again I was suprised. Dr Block came into the room, sat down with me, and took his time to explain all of my options for my pet's care. He was also extremely understanding of the financial burden that the treatment ( in this case fibrosarcoma) could bring and did not make me feel bad about taking finances into consideration. After deciding to go through with biopsy testing, they even understood that I was tired after work and offered to keep my pet for the night at no charge. I didn't even end up needing to have her stay because they completed the procedure so efficiently (within a few hours) and a week later the doctor called me with the results himself, again with empathy and patience. I would definitely recommend this hospital to any pet parent who is looking for treatment in their specialties. Read Less

Great experience! One of my dog's nails broke off and there was blood all over the place (poor doggie). I arrived at 7:30pm on Friday and was out of there at 8pm...and they only charged me $50. Say what? Yep, they immediately took my dog and within 30mins had bandaged his paw.BSVES is clean, friendly, and has very reasonable prices. While I hope I don't have to come here again anytime soon, you can be sure that the next time I have to take my dog to the doggie ER I will come here. Read Less

My husband and I brought our 7 month old bulldog, Sammy there. He was critical but they patiently and effectively outline all the options that we had for our little Bulldog. Everyone was compassionate and understanding and helped us through the difficult process and choices that we finally had to make. Very thankful they were there when we needed them. My aging cat has had blood in her urine for months.  Her regular vet could not find the cause through x-rays and blood tests, so she recommended an ultrasound at Bay State.  I set up an appointment for the test only, not a consult afterward.  The results would be sent to my vet so I could discuss the results with her.  I was told up front that it would cost $190 (my vet had given me a heads up that it would cost at least that).  The facility is large, clean, and modern.  The large waiting area and a couple of vending machines in the far corner reminded me that it really is a hospital.  The receptionist had me fill out a form and an RN or PA came out to get my cat.  Everyone was very friendly and warm, even being gentle with the cat carrier as they took her out back.  I paid and waited only a short while before she was brought out.  They asked me to bring her back in a couple of days to stay the day and do a repeat ultrasound.  No charge.  You don't hear that too often.Two days later, I took her back in first thing int he morning.  Again, she was handled with much care.  I called at lunchtime to make sure she was doing okay and I was assured she was comfortable and doing great.  When I returned to pick her up later in the day, I was asked (that's important to note - I was never told, always asked) if they could do another test which involved a needle.  I approved.  A little while later, I was shown into an exam room by the RN/PA who had taken her that morning.  She showed me a picture she took of my cat sleeping in a soft blanket and I really appreciated that extra step to show me she was comfortable and relaxed.  Dr. Worhunsky came in and discussed the test results with me, the fact that there were no conclusive findings, what his professional opinions were, and options for additional testing/care.  I remind you, I did not pay for a consult, only the testing.  He spoke with me for at least 20 minutes and was very thorough.  I got my cat and went to the counter to pay for the consult and the additional test.  The receptionist and doctor looked at me confused and told me that there was no extra charge.  I'm telling you, they really could have hosed me and they didn't.  $190 was all I paid for all that care and testing.  It's a little far from home compared to my current vet, but if possible, I'm transferring all care to Bay State.  I was so impressed from start to finish.  I really couldn't have asked for better service - for both my cat and me. This was my first time there and I hope I never have to go back. The front desk attendants are so fake nice to you, you can see right through them. My dog went in for a test they took her in and brought her out when she was done. I never met any of the doctors, they may be good but it's hard to want to go back to a place when there's unprofessional employees at the front desk. It just takes one person or in this case two. There's one particular person who works the front desk and for some reason was being very rude, disrespectful and very unprofessional. I gave her no reason to warrant that type of behavior. I told her she didn't need to be talking to me like that and that she was being very unprofessional and she didn't like that. At one point she got up out of her chair and got in my face! The other person working at the front desk who is the one who cashed me out wasn't any better, I said thank you I got no reply from her and she isn't even the one that the problem was with. She had been nice to me when the other one went in the back but when the other one came back niceness gone. Then they couldn't even wait until I got outside to start talking about me. The first rude one said "she thought you were going to say you're welcome". She should have said you're welcome because now that makes bitches out of both of you. If you can't work with people, hate your job that much or both then get a different job. How would the veterinarians feel knowing you're out there treating clients that way? I was given three different amounts for this test and I was lied to. I was told the cardiologist would be doing the test. When I got the call to go there I was told the cardiologist is on her way and for me to be there in a half-hour. If I didn't question them about the price I wouldn't have known that it was the technician that would be doing the test for this amount if it had been the doctor it would be this amount. Hospitals are chronically understaffed and underfunded. Vets do the most with what they've got. There are some genuinely great people at BSVES, and expect pretty good service, but like any hospital be prepared to wait.I went in with a prior notice specifically to euthanize my cat, who was dying of cancer. The staff was genuinely supportive, and tried to make the best of the situation. I can't speak for the other care services, but this was done adroitly.The facility was recommended by my regular vet, and I'd go back there again. Read Less

Brought my dog here over labor day weekend because he was having some health issues and my normal vet was closed for the holiday.  While we originally thought it was a reaction to some vaccinations he received the previous week I brought in a stool sample for them to test to confirm our suspicions.  I thought they tested the sample at the time but I later learned when bringing him back to my normal vet after symptoms returned, that they never tested the sample and we suspect they just threw it away.  In the end I learned when my other vet actually tested a new sample that my dog had Hookworms and that this could've been caught and treated almost a full month sooner had Bay State actually tested the sample as I asked them to do.  I am in the process of disputing the charges from Bay State with my credit card company after learning all this as Bay State's failure to test the sample not only resulted in my having to pay additional vet fees for further tests/exams but also could've resulted in more serious health complications for my dog.Needless to say don't bring your pet to Bay State.  People there were super nice but I'm going to a vet to get my dog healthy and that they failed to do. We recently brought our beloved Ms. Kitty into the clinic on Friday evening at 10 pm. She was in bad shape as a result of a tragic injury and we knew that based on her advanced age and condition, she was not going to make it. I cannot say enough how professional, caring and empathetic the staff at Bay State Veterinary were in treating our little girl. Dr. Lindsey Miller was wonderful in explaining the situation to us, and while it wasn't the news we had hoped to hear, her caring approach during this very difficult time for my wife and me will always be most appreciated. Additionally, the staff that evening were all exceptional people who could not have been more professional or empathetic. I recommend Bay State Veterinary without condition and I once again want to thank them for treating Ms. Kitty with dignity and compassion.Read Less

Had to use Bay State for emergency services after my small dog ingested a large amount of chocolate. They immediately took him back to administer treatment. I met with a sympathetic and knowledgable vet who discussed his treatment and discussed the options for further care. He ended up staying the night, and they allowed me to go back to the treatment area (which was very clean) to say goodnight. All of the staff were very friendly and I could tell they had a passion for animals. Fortunately he's doing well and the aftercare was spot on! Read Less

Awesome vet there Dr Olsen I think her name is. She was caring and extremely attentive to my pets needs, she didn't tip toe around any not so good news she had to give my family she was very straight forward and was all about saving his life. She did beyond what she could to save him and he sadly went into cardiac (heart failure) and she rushed us into the room and we we're with him before he passed for a few minutes. I'm glad I got to be right there with him I never left his side. They did multiple ink paw prints at no charge for us they came out beautiful. Although it was sad loosing our beloved cat Oreo, I would 100% reccomend this ER as the best in the area, they are all located in Swansea but Bay state absolutely did everything possible to be caring at that hard time. Mixed review. Took my cat here in December because he was open mouth breathing and just not himself. He ended up passing away at Baystate. They did everything they could for him but he was older and a bit overweight. They were very respectful and called us in the room right when he took his last breath so we were there with him and that was nice. Also let us stay in the room with him alone to say goodbye. They made us paw prints that came out nice and were just very professional and caring about the whole situation. We received a sympathy card a few days later from them.Here's the negative: called in at 2am because my 1 year old cat had a seizure, was vomiting and open mouth breathing for a minute or 2. The woman on the phone gave me no advice or knowledge just said to bring him in. I would spend thousands to save my pets but he was fine after a few minutes and it was a 30 minute drive at 2am. I just needed some advice on what to do during and after the seizure and that was not happening. We took him to Capeway vet the next day and turns out he's in great health so hopefully it was a one and done type of thing. Read Less

We had Sophie, our 7yr old Daschund mix treated here for life threatening Anemia this past March. She was recovering well, but had a fatal relapse at the end of June '14. Throughout her treatment ALL the staff at Baystate were great. We were informed of costs and options at every milestone. Drs Miller, Thomas and all the other folks were absolutely outstanding. I am a M.D. I went into medicine because I thought humans were much more important than animals, but I think all creatures deserve a level of care and compassion, which is absent in this facility. The bottom line in this place is $$$$$$, it it very disgusting. My cat didn't get any care until they saw my credit card. No X-ray no morphine drip. I am note sure if he was even fed. These "doctors" are really a sad excuse for clinicians and it saddens me that someone would go into the art of medicine and use that knowledge to exploit human beings for economic gain. Read Less

I brought my cat there after he was vomiting blood tinged fluid and my regular vet was closed.  My regular vet informed me they did payment plans, but once I arrived, they refused any kind of payment plan.I indicated price was of concern as I recently lost my job.  The vet faked concern and suggested $150 X-rays and $150 blood work.  I asked if we could do one then the other in the effort to cut costs.  She refused to suggest one or the other first.  I went with X-ray.  After performing x-ray and charging me said fee, she informed me X-rays just aren't always accurate and there was a gas bubble but it "appears" there is nothing but she could be wrong.  Then she informed me she could send blood work out and it would only cost $70.  Meanwhile they will send me home with medicine to help with nausea.  I got to front desk and paid $377.  When we are about to leave the receptionist said "Ohhh I didn't realize you wanted blood work.  That is an additional $95.  I informed her vet said $70, she calls back room and says "Nope $95" but you can go home and think about it, we will save his blood.So $377 later I was sent home with NO answers and my cat's conditions only got worse. I needed emergency vet services for my bunny and the level of concern, knowledge & care here was far above other veterinarians. They have very knowledgeable staff who are kind, accommodating and understanding in times of need. Most places do not treat rabbits on an emergency basis but they were able to diagnose the problem quickly. I would not hesitate to return here for emergency or veterinary services. They have regular vet services and a 24 hour animal emergency room. Their sister property, Ocean State, is equally as good as well. Read Less

DO NOT BRING YOUR EXOTICS HERE! They will tell you over the phone they do treat them but DO NOT have staff to handle or care to handle them. They will gladly take your money and spend their time calling an outside specalist instead of turning you away to someone who could help. While in an exam room debating what to do with my now deceased exotic I could hear their staff saying they didn't want to touch my pet. They require you to pay upfront for service and won't even examine your animal in front of you. This was my exotics first (and only) sickness and I thought she would be able to get help however I was very wrong. They told me she was stable and I could bring her home and then when I got there she was deceased with no real explanation as to what happened except that they thought about starting her on antibiotics but didn't get a chance to when she had been there for almost 18 hours. My only regret in my almost 16 years of owning her was that I brought her here where she spent her final hours without the dignity and respect she deserved. Read Less

The only reason this "vet" got one star, is because it's impossible to give no stars.What does everyone think of a place that charges $650 and won't let me speak to an actual vet? How about an institution that gives you the wrong medication for your sick pet and then refuses to acknowledge it? My cat had inflammation in her bladder, and the vet neglected to tell me she actually had blood in her urine, and had an infection as well. I got a blood pressure medication instead of the anti-inflammatory they told me she received (hence the fact that the cat was still suffering a month later). I was never told that she needed a new low ash diet to control flare-ups of her FLUTD that she was diagnosed with; I was told to "reduce the cat's stress". Oh, and if you consider a white blood cell count that is twice the normal amount to be "just slightly higher, and nothing to be concerned about," then this is the vet for you. The underlying problem in my cat? Crystal development in her bladder. It only took a $30 on the spot urine sample for my amazing new vet, Abbott Animal Hospital in Rehoboth, MA, to tell me this was the case. This is quite interesting actually, because Bay State charged me $150 for xrays and an additional $30 to "read the xray", and told me there were no crystals. Wow.While this institution had inherant difficulty in providing authentic medical advice, they certainly had no problem issuing me an authentic medical bill of $650 to "treat" my cat with the wrong medications. Upon calling to question this bill, I wasn't even allowed to speak with a vet. When I called again last night because my cat was crying in pain, they told me that if I wouldn't come in again and pay all over again, all they could tell me to do is look up petplace.com and get some more information. I wasn't allowed to speak with the vet, for some unknown reason... $650, the wrong medication, incorrect results (that didn't take a rocket scientist to see... it was written on the paper), no speaking with the vet, and then direction to follow up with a website. I couldn't get one dose of a medication to ease her pain in the middle of the night... why? Because it's much more profitable to force me to bring her back in... and I couldn't even hear this from the vet's mouth. Too almighty apparently to speak to me.I am immensely saddened for the pets out there that are in agony and are treated wrongly, due to the negligence of this institution. I will be following through with what I told this poor excuse for an animal hospital, and writing a letter to every vet in RI and Southeastern MA warning them about this terrible place. I will also be sharing the copies of the files I picked up on my cat, because it's amazing how much I've been able to discover thus far about the negligent care I received. I will include these files in every letter, to prove that I'm not just a disgruntled, begrudgened, angry patient. This is not over. Read Less

They were really inexpensive for an emergency vet. We were able to meet in the middle re: testing. My cat had an injury to his leg which required surgery. He has made a complete recovery. They were very patient & understanding with regard to our budget. I would definitely go there again. Read Less

My first visit to Bay State was unfortunately a sad one, I recently had to put my dog down but the staff was compassionate and understanding. The facility was clean and professional. I thank the staff for being as caring as they were. If I need to I would go back again. Also I thank bay state for the thoughtful sympathy card that I received a few days later. Read Less
