My hedgehog Gouda was a patient of Dr. O’Leary’s at Worcester Cat & Bird. I had a wonderful experience at this clinic. To sum everything up in a few words, I am certain that Dr. O'Leary added years to my hedgehog's life. I brought in a very sick hedgehog to this clinic years ago; Dr. O’Leary performed the minimal amount of tests necessary to make a diagnosis. She then went above and beyond in her research of the necessary procedure and prices, and then offered to do the surgery at almost 70% less than it would have cost me at Tufts. After having a successful surgery, Gouda lived a long happy life well beyond the average hedgehog lifespan. Sadly, I recently had to bring Gouda in to be euthanized in her old age; Dr. O’Leary was extremely caring and sensitive toward my sadness and even cried with me. This week I received the sweetest sympathy card in the mail from Dr. O’Leary and the staff. I am shocked to see so many negative reviews; it's unfortunate because after reading them, I can see that most of the reviews are coming from ignorant people. Most of the negative reviews have people complaining about prices… Worcester Cat & Bird’s prices are competitive, if not less expensive, than other clinics around. I actually expected to pay higher prices going to a small/exotic animal clinic; Dr. O’Leary is a SPECIALIST—there aren’t many vets in any given area that will see these types of animals. I also saw one specific negative review that is worth discussing. It came from client who had trusted Worcester Cat & Bird with their cats for 16 years (think about that). When one of their cats died, Dr. O’Leary sent FLOWERS. To summarize the review, the client blamed Dr. O’Leary for their other cat getting sick after eating the plant. Yes—the client left the plant in a spot where the cat could access it, and blamed the nice lady who sent them. From what this person wrote, they went to the clinic, demanded emergent care, and free treatment! Then they were shocked that the staff was a little irritated by all of this. I think the key things to take out of that review, even though the rating doesn’t show it, is this: Dr. O’Leary sends sympathy mementos when one of her patients dies; they will take emergency visits whenever possible, even though they are not an emergency clinic; and they have clients that trust them to care for their animals for many, many years. Dr. O’Leary and the staff at Worcester Cat & Bird are nothing but compassionate, caring people who only want the best for these animals. I highly recommended Dr. O’Leary and this clinic without any hesitation. Read Less

She wanted to do a full work up on the tumor including a biopsy, blood tests, xray... It was an elderly on its last months rat that I was trying to make more comfortable before making the decision to euthanize. I would have cost me $400. I still ended up paying $175 to get a round of antibiotics. I would never recommend this place. Even in the waiting room I was talking to a woman who told me how much she spent on herb3 cats there and one had cancer and she had to get a second job. The 3rd day and which happened to be a Friday they t...old her to take her home seeing she was better and after costing $670 they sent her home with food and antibiotics she wasn't even home 10 minutes and she started breathing funny like a whistling noise and seemed like she was choking, daughter called the vet back and they said call back tomorrow(SAT) we said we wanted to bring her back and they just said if she gets worse bring her to Tufts within 10 mins of that phone call the ferret choked again and died in my daughters arms. The dr called my daughter on sat to say she was sorry that her ferret had passed but when my daughter was trying to ask her some questions she wouldn't let my daughter talk and would talk over her (had her on speaker phone) the dr was being extremely rude and was making my daughter very upset and cry, we are going to have a autopsy done and if we do find out they are at fault there will be a lawsuit. By far the best small animal exotic vet I used in the Worcester area, and I must have tried them all - including Tufts University. Dr. O'Leary and her (former) associates have given great care towards my guinea pigs. They treated them knowing they were valuable and gave the best possible care. The office support staff is great. Dr. O'Leary is primarily concerned with the animal's health. She will give me the best/worst outcomes. Always, her concern first has been for the animals' welfare, not my feelings - just as it should be. At times, her practice has gotten so busy the place has suggested to clients they try to find another vet. No way, I'll wait. They have boarded my guinea pigs, treating them like their own - and giving them better care than I gave them, no doubt. When an animal passed, the office thoughtfully sent a floral/plant. The doctor herself told me it would cost $$$ then after the work was done she said I was wrong it's another $50 bucks and since I did not have it right, then, and there, my pet was refused one more injection. Without this injection the 5 prior injections were useless and would have to start all over again. I was also not allowed to be with my pet for the injections and any one who has rats knows how anxious they get. I should have learned from the lack of compasion they had back in 1999 when after they spade my kitten she was shot and killed with a BB gun, they were to busy to do the autopsy so I had to bring her some where else. I have been taking my reptiles to the worcester cat hospital and bird clinic for over 7 years. Owning 3 different species, (iguana, bearded dragon and a russian tortoise), have always had excellent care. Dr. Oleary and staff spend an unbelivable amount of time on care and information and without them my iguana would be long gone. Pet stores where I got these didn't have a clue how to take care of them and they all have very different needs for food and temperatures and housing. This hospital has full information on every kind of reptile and when my iguana was very sick they were able to bring her back to health. She needed fluids and injections and diet changes and several medications but she is a different animal today, big, green and beautifl (she was brown and shrivelling up when I took her there) Thank you to Dr. Oleary and everyone at this hospital for your wonderful care! Susie especially thanks you! Read Less

This vet isn't worth going to. I have no transportation, so I have been forced to use this vet for awhile. After pretty much killing one of my cats in 2005, I searched for a new vet, and found one, but that vet disappeared after only a short time. Then I had to go back to this one. They DO make you feel guilty. My Jean-Luc caught a virus along with his two roommates, and he lost a lot of weight quite fast. The other two recovered from the virus, but JL only got worse. By the time I managed to get him to the vet, he was very ill. I called to them for an appointment, and they said they could "fit me in" if I paid #75 MORE for the "emergency servces," and in the end, he died at the vet's that night. It wasn't the first time I got that kind of treatment. They refuse categorically to allow a payment plan for anyone, they will force you to get bloodwork every single time you walk in, or they won't gve you the medicine you need for your pet. I lived on a low fixed income, and I find it diffcult to pay for all that on any kind of single payment. I can't always pay it, and my pets have had to suffer as a result. My old vet in California was the best vet in the world, and I haven't found any one vet comparable to the vets near me now. This vet has very sleazy practices on the financial side, and as a result, they have lost me as a client. Pet "treated" by this vet was a bearded dragon. Our experience was terrible. We were told that our pet was going to die without a battery of expensive tests and surgery. We were also told that the vet wouldn't perform any services for our supposedly dying animal unless she was paid in full up front; our attempt to set up an installment plan was categorically refused. We were accused by O'Leary of being neglectful. She literally reduced my wife to tears over the phone. After being told on Halloween 2007 that our pet would be dead by the following Thanksgiving, I'm happy to say that he is still alive as of January 2009 and quite healthy as he approaches his thirteenth birthday. A second opinion with another vet resulted in our being told that all he needed was a small dietary change; there was never anything significantly wrong with him. I wonder how many pets have been needlessly euthanized because of this veterinarian. In any case, I would STRONGLY advise owners to take their pets elsewhere for care. Read Less

I gave this place 20 yrs of referrals,my cats,my girls cats,my cockatiels and when my pet needed one more injection they said NO. No compasion then and now. Read Less

Read Less
