My doberman was having a digestive problem and I was very worried because she is 13 years old. I called Brookeside Veterinary Hospital and they took her right in immediately. Dr. Frommert was so compassionate and they ran the necessary thorough tests to determine what was wrong. The lab work showed my dog has an bacterial intestinal infection. They gave her antibiotics and something for pain. She was better in just 3 days! I will definitely take my baby back! Very reasonable prices for all the services they performed. Read Less

Dr. Rozyzco likely saved my elderly cat's life, treating a painful, and serious digestive tract condition. The treatment was, unfortunately, extremely unpleasant for both Dr. R, and my cat. After her experience at the hospital, however, it was quite clear that Dr. R had won my cat's trust and affection. Dr. R decided upon the course of her treatment with reasoned judgment, while both he and Dr. Smaltz exercised compassion for his patient. Read Less

They entirely neglected our hedgehog while he was boarded there for three weeks. No one played with him even though we requested at least 15 minutes of play time each day - this is important for hedgehogs so that they stay accustomed to people. We even spoke to a worker at the clinic who had the nerve to say, "I don't even know what your pet looks like" and this was the person left in charge of making sure he was ok and playing with him. How infuriating!! Read Less

We boarded our young dog here for a week and the staff there is great! They covered all of the details regarding the care of our pup and were very accommodating. Contrary to the other reviews I found Dr. Rozyczko to be very compassionate, and thorough when discussing the care of our fur baby. We spoke to several other staff members as well, and each one seemed like a genuine animal lover. The country setting is definitely a plus, and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quality boarder that gives your pet one on one time. Read Less

My parents and now my wife and I have been taking our animals to Brookeside since I was a child. I stayed with them because of the way they treat both the people and the animals. Everyone in front and in back seems to actually care about my dog and remember his health things and his personality. He's had some weird digestive issues since he was a pup and brookside has been dedicated to helping us figure them out. When I lived in California I took him to highly rated vets out there and no one could help him; he seemed to be slipping away. Brookside spent a lot of energy and time figuring it out with us when we came back and he's now 10 and acting like a puppy again. I'd say to ask questions about alternatives if something is pricey, as vet exams and medicines tend to be, because brookeside is always open to tailoring treatment to you and your animal's needs. I would also recommend the normal supplement pancreatin to anyone whose dog has chronic pancreatitis and the solid gold holistic brand of dog food that has around 4% fat, but that's just in case someone reads this who is as desperate as I was to find something that would help my dog when the hills i/d only did so much. I'm not a vet though :) Read Less

Both care deeply about your animals and try to make recommendations that meet your needs. I also always get follow up calls the day after my appointments from the Dr.'s themselves to check on how the treatment is working.Regarding other comments, I think if you are looking for euthanization from a provider that has never seen your animal that can be problematic. I would recommend one of the emergency hospitals. I am writing this review in defense of Dr. Rozyczko and Brookeside because we have been going their for so long and our review is long overdue! We love the atmosphere at Brookeside - that it is off a dirt road with a barn, horses, and feral cats running around. Dr. R specifically is incredibly knowledgeable about animals and their physiology. He went to one of the best veterinary schools in the country and it shows. Maybe his bedside manner is a bit awkward, but for a CAT DUDE he's hardly a blip on the quirky radar. I do think that he could be less pushy with the vaccines, booster shots, flea and tick medication, special diets, etc., but vets stay in business largely because of these sales, so you can't blame them for at least trying. And as a paying customer you can always say NO! And ignore the guilt trip! Which is what we do most the time! Read Less

I have a new pet and decided to try Brookeside because a friend of mine speaks very highly of Dr. R's evaluation and treatment skills. Her cat has multiple allergies and is doing great. On my first visit, Dr. R communicated very well with me as well as with my dog. Brookeside is located on the north side of town, yet the setting is that of a calm, country vet. They didn't mind my 50 questions, or the fact that my dog had a BM right inside the door and barked at another dog. I'm taking her back tomorrow to get her teeth cleaned. Read Less

I was very dissatisfied with my visit to Brookeside and will never return with my cats. Dr. Rozyczko made the experience incredibly uncomfortable. I visited Brookeside after moving back to Ann Arbor to obtain the same annual vaccinations that my cats have been getting for six years. Rozyczko immediately questioned the judgement of my past veterinarians for not providing several optional vaccinations sarcastically saying, "well, everyone has opinions." After I refused many of the vaccinations, insisting that the cats simply receive what I came for, he made me sign a handwritten note in his file, which said I was refusing a vaccine against his recommendation, at potential risk to public health. Rozyczko then strongly insisted that I leave the room during the vaccination process. No other veterinarian has ever made this request in my years of pet ownership. His phrasing made it very uncomfortable and it would have seemed very confrontational to refuse. In the days to follow, one of my cats reacted pretty violently to the vaccinations, vomiting repeatedly (which has never happened before) and developing an intense sinus issue from an intranasal vaccination that Rozyczko strongly recommended. Both issues required me to seek out another veterinarian for treatment, who was deeply concerned about the intranasal vaccination, which he deemed unnecessary. My cat needed over a week of medication in order to overcome the sinus issues.Additionally, Brookeside charged me an additional fee because I asked Rozyczko to look at a lump on my other cat's stomach while there. Rozyczko examined the spot for about 30 seconds and simply instructed me to keep an eye on it. That cost an additional $22, I'm still concerned and unsure about the lump, and will be taking this cat to another vet as well. Read Less

Before we dropped our little pup during the holidays, I researched the many (and über expensive) boarding places in washtenaw county and am glad we ended up with this place. I've never boarded a pet before so I didn't know what to expect or what to look for. I was able to stop by and come look at the facilities, which was nice. The first person I spoke to over the phone was really nice and helpful. When I got to the boarding place, I was welcomed by a new employee (she told me it was her 2nd day) and I believe the owner? I saw pictures of the older woman on the website and was a little turned off at how she was treating the new girl. She was condescending when training the new girl and I felt slightly uncomfortable. Anywho, we decided on Brookedale, primarily due to the cost $19.50/night. They required that our pup had a few shots prior to entering. When asked if he would need a stool sample, the woman I first spoke to over the phone told me that was not needed, however when my hubby dropped him off, he was told the opposite. So that was an extra $21. They told us that our pup would be taken out 4-5 times and would not interact with other pets, which was favorable because our pup hasn't socialized with other dogs. I hadn't seen my pup for a few weeks, so I was eager to get him as soon as they opened. We were told that the dogs are released until 11 am (we got there at 9 am) and told by the older woman we could take him. I was not told about the 11 am time and thought that was very strange. Anyways, our pup came back with no issues. He has developed a rash though, and I'm still trying to figure out if it has to do with being in an unfamiliar place or the snow. I'm a little undecided if I would bring him back here. Read Less

I have been taking my dogs (and cats when I had cats) to Brookside for 12 years.  Obviously, to stay with a vet for that long a period I am very satisfied with them. My most recent interaction was about 2 weeks ago when I came home to find my 11 year old Black lab looking obviously sick, eyes flat, lying down instead of greeting me at the door, holding her head at an odd angle.  I was afraid that she was having a stroke.  I called Brookside and described the situation.  It was lunch time when they usually are switching which vet is on duty.  I was told to bring my dog right in, no waiting!! Dr Smaltz stayed over to see my dog.   My dog was sick, high fever, tender abdomen.  My dogs have the run of 6 fenced acres and often eat dead animals or whatever they find in the fields.  The consensus was that my dog had probably eaten something rotten and it had made her sick.  I say "the consensus" because I feel that Dr Smarltz asked me questions and took into consideration the things I told her instead of just examining my dog and telling me what she found without taking into consideration all of the information I had to give.  My dog was given fluids and pain medicine.  We discussed different blood tests and how much each one cost.  We decided to do one blood test to rule out pancreatitis.   Dr Smaltz offered to keep my dog for observation for the afternoon if I wanted but pointed out that my dog was very stressed being away from me to get the fluids and might do better at home. I brought my dog home, she slept most of the afternoon and in the morning was much better.  Dr Smaltz called in the morning to follow up on how my dog was doing. I was prepared for a very large bill.  This had been an emergency visit, my dog had gotten 2 liters of fluid, a shot of Rimadyl, an exam, blood draw and blood test.  The cost was $178.00.  That cost is more than reasonable.  My dogs are frequently seen by Dr  Rozyczko.  He has a caring attitude and I feel he is genuinely interested in dogs.   I feel he is very thorough.  Sometimes this is good and sometimes not good as too much information can lead me to feel worried and anxious about my dog.  Dr Rozyczko does seem to want to do more blood tests but we discuss the situation and decide together what the best course of action is. I feel very comfortable recommending Brookside Vet Hospital to you for your dog or cat vet care.  If your cat is afraid of dogs, then I would consider a vet that sees only cats as there are sounds of dogs barking at Brookside that would upset some cats. If this isn't an issue, then go to Brookside. Read Less

I have been bringing my dog here for six years--willlingly and happily driving across town to get what I consider excellent service. Before settling on Brookeside I tried out three other clinics in Ann Arbor, so I have a good idea about the local competition, and I would recommend Brookeside without hesitation to anyone. Dr. Rozyczko is the definition of a straight arrow: a great guy, easy to talk to, sympathetic, thorough, and COMPLETELY TRUSTWORTHY. Dr. Nancy Smaltz is also wonderful: sharp, very experienced, sympathetic, and also, completely trustworthy. Treatment options and fees are always discussed in an open-- and completely open-ended--way, i.e. no pressure, and prices are competitive. Also, Nancy Jennings is, without question, the best groomer in A.A. Read Less

I have been taking my golden retrievers to Brookeside Veterinarian Hospital over the past 18 years and have never once felt that the veterinarians there had anything but good intentions and concern for the welfare of my dogs. My goldens have been pretty special, but I find it hard to believe that Brookeside is more interested in making money than the welfare of the animals it treats. My last golden died from a mast cell tumor, and certainly there would have been opportunity enough to take advantage of me if that was their intention. Instead, I was referred to the MSU Veterinary Oncology Department and received excellent treatment and care there at minimal cost that extended the life of my golden for several months. Over the months of chemotherapy (that I chose as a course of treatment in consultation with the oncologist there) I heard horror stories of dog owners being ripped off by private veterinarian hospitals before they finally came to MSU. I know such places exist, but from my experience Brookeside is certainly not one of them. I have only praise for the staff and treatment my pets have received there. Read Less

I totally agree with Bryan S...if I could give them negative stars I would!  Thankfully, I have never had to subject my animals to their lack of care or subject myself to the ridiculous upsell the staff tries to pull.  I have had many of my friends go there once only to say they won't return because every test, vaccine, food and supplement is pushed on pet owners and those who refuse them are looked down upon as if they are abusing their pet.Worst of all, the office manager is an absolute nightmare!  Watch out for the absolutely incompetent front desk staff that will incorrectly charge you and then send you to collections after you refuse to pay the difference.  Anna is completely incompetent (email me and I'll forward you her letters that have so many grammatical and spelling errors that a 5th grader could correct) and it's embarrassing that she has a job.  You can count on her to be rude and harass you.  Looking for GREAT care on the NE side of Ann Arbor?  Try Dixboro Veterinary Medical and Dental Center.  They are AAHA certified, unlike this shoddy operation. I have both positive and negative reviews- but overall I gave them 4 stars. For the positive review;1. I have never gotten the impression that they don't care for my pets. On the contrary, I have found that they have given great attention to my pets. When Rudi had bloat surgery, the Doc  (Dr. Smaltz) that performed the surgery gave me her personal number to call if i needed anything. She was absolutely wonderful. I recommend her highly!2. The staff, with exception to my below negative review, has been very accommodating and very nice. They are very flexible schedule-wise and have customer friendly hours. For the negative review;I agree with Bryan S. about Dr Vincent Rozyczko to an extent.1. Many times Dr. Rozyczko tried to get me to buy unnecessary items, ranging from specialty dog food to dental cleanings for my husky (Rudi). I did have Rudi's teeth cleaned there, and about a year later he recommended a cleaning- again! I couldn't believe it- especially because I am under the impression that it is unhealthy for dogs to undergo anesthesia multiple times (and Rudi had bloat surgery ~6 months before this 2nd teeth cleaning recommendation). I began to wonder whether my dog truly did need the other teeth cleaning, especially because he is only 6 years old and had one previous cleaning a few years ago. 2. Dr  Rozyczko and one other person (not sure who- if it was a Doc or a tech) have talked down to me on a few occasions. I am no vet, nor do I claim to be, however I am scientist and tend to be more familiar with vet med more than the 'average Joe'. I didn't appreciate the condescending attitudes of these two people. 3. Dr Rozyczko has also told me contradictory things. I wont over elaborate on this point, so here is a quick example. Basically he insisted that I store my dog's urine sample at room temperature instead of 4 degrees (fridge) until I could bring it in because the colder temperature may cause crystals to precipitate out of solution. But when I brought in my sample, another Doctor said the sample could not be used due to improper storage (should have been stored in the fridge) The whole thing was frustrating and a waste of my time. Overall I gave 4 stars because I feel that one bad apple doesn't have to ruin the bunch. I really appreciated Dr. Smaltzs' sincerity and attitude. She was wonderful, and overall my positive experiences at Brookside outweigh my negative experiences there. Read Less

I would give these guys negative stars if I could.  Whatever you do, don't take your pet here.  They don't care about the well being of the animals, they are only interested in making money.  I have 2 cats, one of which has an aggressive skin allergy.  It causes her to scratch until she pulls her fur out and has bloody patches all over her body.  The only thing that stops her from scratching is prednisone.  Dr Vincent Rozyczko was the vet that she always saw.  Here are the top reasons why Dr. Rozyczko and co. are a bunch of crooks:1. He kept insisting on doing these ridiculous $800 blood tests and he insisted that the only way he could administer the steroids was by giving her a shot (which cost about $50 plus the cost of the visit).  We were spending $100+ every month on vet visits.  Upon moving back to Chicago, we got a REAL vet who told us that she could take steroid pills that would cost about $15 every 2 months.  She also told us that blood tests and skin tests are a waste of time because 90% of the time, you never find the cause of the allergy. 2.  Upon moving, Dr. Rozyczko told us that he would be more than happy to fax her complete file over to her new vet.  Once we established the new vet, he refused to fax anything over to them.  He was completely uncooperative.3.  When we had our little cat spayed, they kept her in her little carrier, only taking her out to perform the surgery, and then put her back in the little cage.  She was in that little cage for two days straight.  I went to pick her up and she was all drugged up and laying in a urine soaked cage with her little surgery scar exposed.  She also had marks on her face from pressing it against the bars because she doesn't like being in her cage.  4.  Occasionally Dr. Rozyczko would have us drop her off for her visit if they were extremely busy.  I would tell him that we only wanted him to give her a steroid shot and he would tack a bunch of other crazy stuff onto the bill.  I can't tell you how many times he tried to sell us completely worthless medicine!  I had to constantly keep track of what this guy was charging us for.5.  He would always do the examination in some back room where we couldn't see what he was doing.  For all we know, he sat back there reading the newspaper while he was supposed to be taking care of the cat.  I have never had a vet take my pet to another place to do the exam.  They always do it in the room right in front of you.  I think this made it easier for him to tack extra stuff on to the bill without us objecting ahead of time (this would occasionally happen).Don't take your pets here if you care about them.  I never found a vet that I particularly liked in the 3 years that I lived in Ann Arbor but this guy was the worst of all. No one played with him even though we requested at least 15 minutes of play time each day - this is important for hedgehogs so that they stay accustomed to people.

Read Less

Before settling on Brookeside I tried out three other clinics in Ann Arbor, so I have a good idea about the local competition, and I would recommend Brookeside without hesitation to anyone. Dr. Nancy Smaltz is also wonderful: sharp, very experienced, sympathetic, and also, completely trustworthy.
