We see Dr. Colmery for our Yorkshire Terrier who has had extensive dental problems. I wish someone had told me about him when we got her as a puppy. It would have changed everything. He takes his time talking to us about procedures and follow-up care. He is terrifically knowledgeable. He helped us when it was obvious that our regular vet (who was a great vet) did not have the knowledge base to deal with dental complexity and recommended us to Dr. Colmery. If you have a small dog, I recommend seeing Dr. Colmery from the start. I wish I had. My next Yorkie will go to him from the very beginning and we'll be able to sidestep future dental problems. My vet suggested I take my cat to Dixboro Veterinary Dental for what she thought may be stomatitis resulting in infected teeth and my cat not eating. The dentist here diagnosed her with Bartinella instead -- a virus he says often manifests in stomatitis like symptoms. There are no medical journals on this correlation. He pulled a few of her infected teeth and sent us home with medicine. The medicine stopped working after a month. When we called, he said it was likely ANOTHER virus and without seeing her, sent us home with more pills. Those didn't work after a month of trying to get her to eat. I had no problem with the facility or the staff. The doctor seemed very knowledgable. My vet had recommended this doc for my cat's first dental. When I called I was told that the price for a dental would be 300-600 dollars, and 600 being the "worst case scenario" which meant extractions. With that, I made the appointment. Once I showed up to drop my cat off, I saw the doctor. After he left a staff member came in for me to sign paperwork. You can imagine my surprise when they said it would be 820-895 dollars!!!! There was NO indication that there was any reason it would be so much more and when I said I was told 600 would be worst case, all I got was "I'm not sure who told you that or why they would have said that." I am thankful that I found Dr. Sell again through the YELP reviews. She has taken good care of my 10.5 y/o Cairn for 10 years and will continue to do so. But as to the claim below that Ben Colmery's clinic is not clean, I am stunned. I have been in that clinic dozens of times and never found unhygenic conditions. Having had a microbiology course in college, I am especially alert to conditions that support mictrobial propagation. While I'm disappointed that I must now take my dog to two different locations for her care, I will not give up on Ben Colmery. He has taken care of my pets for about 30 or 35 years. He can be plain spoken. Well maybe even blunt when he needs to be. BUT if you want the best veterinary oral care anywhere in Michigan, you better stay with Dr. Colmery.  If you don't care so much about the quality of medical care, find a reliable charmer somewhere. Concerning the office staff's attentiveness, I can only say that in my 30-35 years with Dr. Colmery, I've never had anything but the most professional treatment. In spite of their differences, I will continue to use and be thankful for both vets, Dr. Sell and Ben Colmery. Read Less

I never leave Yelp reviews, but after my last visit with Dr. Colmery, I knew I had to make an exception! When I first met with Dr. Colmery, I had already been to another dental specialist who I felt had not only overcharged me for my cat's teeth extractions, but also wasn't able to give me a diagnosis for her chronic illness. Immediately after seeing my cat, Dr. Colmery was able to figure out what my poor cat was suffering from and how to treat her. Since then, he has helped me with all additional tooth extractions and even when I was afraid that more surgery would be out of my price range, he worked with me to make the procedure completely affordable. He truly is an amazing vet with a real passion for helping animals. I am confident when I say that I wouldn't still have my precious cat if he hadn't helped me treat her. I am forever grateful to him and the Dixboro Veterinary staff for their attentive care! Read Less

I really liked Dr. Colmary (sp?) and his associate.  My kitten was born with bad teeth and a heart condition.   I was so worried that he wouldn't survive the surgery that he needed (neuter and removal of the canine teeth). I was a nervous wreck to say the least and he recovered just fine with no complications.  Two other vets refused to take him because they thought he wouldn't make it through the procedure.  Dr. Colmary was so confident the entire time and told me he takes the sickest animals that everyone else refuses (see my review for the Village Animal Clinic).  It is a hike from my house, but well worth the peace of mind. I took my dog to Dixboro Medical & Dental center today 3/21/12 for surgery and would NOT recommend this vet to anyone.Dr. Ben Colmery refused to listen to acknowledge what care I wanted for my dog. He said that she probably would die, so “in his opinion” he did not think it would be fair to give her a chance with surgery.I do NOT feel that Dr. Colmery had my dog’s best interest in mind. He is refusing to help her and insisted on putting her down. There are So many specialists for pets as well as people, I do not understand how or Why a vet (in business to help animals) would simply let them die. That is NOT the easy thing to do.I share my life with my dog, my son loves his dog and we do not want her dead, that is why we chose vet care. As a doggy “mother” and a “human” mother, I would NEVER accept a doctor suggesting that I kill my son instead of getting him medical treatment.SHAME on you Dr. Colmery!!! We have a new puppy and needed a vet that actually had some hours for appointments. I found them on Yelp and was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. We made an appointment for the following day, and were seen right when we arrived, 15 minutes early. It was only a wellness check, but the vet was very, very thorough. She  checked over Princess (our new Pug!), alerting me to her soft knees, underbite (adorable), and small nasal passages (snorty!). They answered all my questions about Princess, gave me really good tips on potty training, and even answered all my questions about my other dog's dental problems, and the cat's behavioral problems  he's been exhibiting (peeing on our bed..awesome) since bringing the new puppy home. The exam price was high, $55, but I feel it was really worth it. They sent us home with coupons, a doggie treat, a free sample of heartworm preventative and an appointment for Princess's next round of shots in 3 weeks. We'll be back! Read Less

I'd been trying to figure out what to do about my lab's rotting tooth for months when I was finally referred to Dr. Berning. I am thankful that I found Dr.

Colmery!!! You should get OUT of the vet practice if you do NOT care about the well being of pets or their owners peace of mind and love of their animals!! Read Less

Read Less

Beyond expectations, my male dog had chipped his upper and lower canines, caused by over crowding.  With the teeth restructured and sealed, with two extracted to make room for proper resettling, I swear you could never tell work was ever done, amazing. I was never expecting the quality of work, oh, and cost came in under the quote.  Being a  working dog, more importantly a Puli,  my boy is stubborn and doesn't care for outsiders much, he liked, respected and trusted Dr. Colmery, that doesn't happen very often.  Hey, he's fixed exotic animal's teeth at the Detroit Zoo, he had me at Polar Bear. I love Dr. Sell.  Seriously.  With three dogs and two cats, we find ourselves visit quite often. Dr. Sell is attentive, listens, and answers as many absurd questions you may have.  I have never felt rushed and the staff has always been so accommodating of my appointment requests.  Same day and urgent visits have never been a problem.Like Dan R posted, I have also never felt overcharged or sold on products/services I don't need.  The care is fantastic, and I feel good knowing that they are AAHA certified.I have also had the opportunity to use the dental cleaning services.  They do a fabulous job!Looking for a new vet? You found her!  I can't say enough good things about Dr. Sell and the staff there.  The vet techs are awesome too!  Sorry to sound like an infomercial, but when you love your animals as much as we do, having a vet like Dr. Sell makes all the difference in the world.
