We just got a postcard last night that our animal is overdue for vaccines. Why are these postcards not sent in advance so that we can appropriately schedule him an appointment? We are boarding our animal in a couple of days and we just found out that he is overdue. I called both the Byron Center office and the caldonia office and neither one will accommodate any appointment for him over the next few days. When I ask why they don't send these postcards out in advance, I was told "oh It must have gotten lost in the mail. " Clearly on the postcard it is printed 'overdue' meaning these postcards are not printed until the animal is past due. I asked the receptionist why don't you send them out in advance so people can plan ahead and make appointments accordingly? Her response was "oh we use a company for those." We live in Hudsonville and it's a haul... But worth it..one of my dogs is 14 and the other one is 10.. We've had cats.. dogs.. Gerbils.. Degues and bunnies and they all have been patients!! Wonderful Dr's. And staff. Great prices as well Read Less

We have always been very pleased with Southkent. When we had to have our first dog put to sleep, they were very companionate and let us take as much time as we needed saying goodbye. We have since rescued a cat and just recently got a new puppy. They have been amazing with all our pets. Picked our puppy up today from being spayed. They were very good with the whole surgical process. Will continue to take our fur babies to Southkent and the amazing staff in Byron Center. Read Less

I've had several pets at this office. I did not care for the previous vet, Dr. Oatley as he was not very personable with the pet owner, but since the staff has changed over - I have been pleased with all of the drs we've seen. The phone availability can be a little annoying, but I did not find that to be enough to mark them down in stars. Their prices are also way more affordable then Wyoming Animal Medical Center. They were several hundreds less on a teeth treatment for over growth of the gums. I highly recommend this office. Read Less

There are new owners at South Kent, a group of 8 vets bought the business from Dr Jackson.I suggest you ask for pricing before you agree to the service. I paid $95 for a teeth cleaning last year for a cleaning with 9 extractions, this year the price was $155 for no extractions. I had one of the owners call and he said that everyone else paid $130 last year and doesn't know how I got that price. This is not the same South Kent. I will continue to go there as long as Dr Jackson is there but for major services, I will check around for prices. Read Less

The staff at this location are not very friendly or personable. They work by appointment only and they aren't very accommodating. People need to understand that they do NOT know more about their pets than the professionals that are work at this hospital. Some of the reviews here are a bit ridiculous. Just because you think your pet is a "good boy" does not mean they aren't prone to feeling threatened in a foreign environment. The staff at this location has worked wonders for my pets, even if they've needed to sedate or restrain my cats, they've done so with care. You may have a good pet, but, for the love of everything, don't get all bent out of shape if your pet happens to act like an animal. Thank you South Kent for doing all that you do. Great veterinary care at reasonable costs. I have had good experiences with most of the vets and staff here. They do get a lot of business here because of their reputation so you need to call a week ahead for a routine visit. Also, may be hard to get in on short notice or emergency basis. They used to have 24 hour available but discontinued as of this year. Read Less

I have gone here for many years with my pets. Lately, my displeasure has become so great that I felt the urge to leave this review. They NEVER answer the telephone so you ALWAYS have to leave a message and HOPE they call you back. They STRESSED that I only feed my papillon this special food. I've stopped twice now and they don't have it. I asked for a prescription so that I could order it online. Uh, don't have it. Now, they also have a sign up that they are no longer going to have emergency hours (even though I count 17 vets on staff) and list NW addresses to call for emergency. Really? I thought this place was a hospital. I've called twice with my cat in serious diabetic distress and both time they refused to see him. The first time he had pancreatitis and would have died if I had treated him at home as they suggested. The second time, just last Thursday, he had his first very low blood sugar and again, they wouldn't see him. I expressed he was in serious trouble, but again they told me to treat him at home. Thank goodness I didn't listen and took him to Cascade animal hospital, who treated him right. They advised that he was very close to seizures and death. Thanks for nothing, Southkent. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I am not impressed by the BC branch of South Kent Veterinary Hospital. I have taken my cats to the Caledonia branch and never had an issue. This time, my mother-in-law helped us out by taking our cat for his 1 year checkup and rabies shot. He gets a little nervous at the vet, and can sometimes require 2 people (one to hold him and one to administer the care). Apparently, he bit the tech or the vet, so they decided to gas him to sedate him. I do not blame my mother-in-law for not stopping them as she did not know my feelings about this, but a phone call for permission would have been appreciated (especially since it was made clear that this wasn't her cat). I would have asked them to just send him home and taken my business elsewhere. I have NEVER had a problem when he needed medicine. Yes, he has put up a struggle, but anyone who has ever had a cat (or, you know, worked in a field that cares for cats...) knows that, if you grab them at the nape of their neck, gently but firmly, you can gain control of them enough to do what you need to do... I would also like to say that the "Where did you get this cat?!" remark was unnecessary and very rude. He is a sweet boy and did NOT need to be sedated. Read Less

I like south Kent vet! The Girls are friendly and attentive. They have always been running on time as far as appointment scheduled goes. Prices are reasonable compared to other places I have been. The office is clean and they truly love the animals the take care of. Hard to get anyone to answer the phone 3-4 times I have to make numerous repeat calls. Read Less

I took my dog Mocha in for a very disturbing diagnosis. She had spone and nerve damage and couldn't  be healed. The doctor presented all options even in the face of hopelessness. We euthanized  her and all of the staff was emotional for the loss. They sent a sympathy  card and truly cared. Thank you for your compassion. Read Less

We moved and tried this vet for about 3 months. It is not possible to receive adequate care for a cat with Kidney Disease at this vet as this vet is not knowledgeable about common treatment options despite this being the number one killer of cats. They admitted they did not have any knowledge of Calcitriol and that they needed to do research to find out what it was. Also they do not have ANY OTHER pets receiving fluid treatments at home. The reason I was given by the office is that "we don't offer that because people generally don't want to do this." It is concerning that they assume no one wants to do this and never offer it as a treatment option. Also if they don't know what all the treatment options are or assume certain one are too... whatever, how am I supposed to trust them when I ask, "what can we do for our pet?" I, like any pet owner, expect them to know ALL of the common treatments and to present ALL of them to me and let me decide what treatments we want to move forward with. My pet's chart had zero record of medication she is taking despite the fact that information was given to them at her first visit. This became evident when I had to give that information to them again to get a refill called in. After she showed me her chart I also noticed they also did not have the x-ray that I had given them on our first visit. Also, one time I came in to pick up IV fluids and the front desk gal tried to switch me to a different kind of fluid. Why would this even be attempted? Why is a non-clinical person attempting to make changes to my pet's treatment? They had no answer for that one. Read Less

I've been using SouthKent for over 8 years with my cat and now my two dogs. I've had good experiences with them with both pets and will continue using them. They are efficient and check-in time and there is hardly ever a wait.. The staff and the vets are always knowledgeable and explain health related topics in easy to understand language. You can have your choice of a vet to see or see whomever is on site that day. I've gone to several different vets and liked them all.They are very affordable with meds and appointments. I've never had any major surgeries thru them but I'm told by other friends, that those procedures are also affordable. Easy to find in Caledonia; next to McDonalds and just down from Family Fare.My only con is that I would not use their boarding service again. I boarded my dog over a weekend there and he came home stressed and shedding. While he's usually very happy, I think being crated/caged didn't agree with him. He has free rein of our house and indicates to us when he needs to use the bathroom; while boarding here, he went out only a few times a day. Even so, I like that they offer an affordable alternative to the pricy boarding places in town. If your pet is comfortable being crated/caged, they may not have any many issues as mine did. I can't say enough good things about this veterinary clinic. We have been going to them since our dogs were pups and find the doctors caring and informative and not perform unnecessary treatments. Their costs are very reasonable compared to other clinics in town but do quality work.One of their principal vets performed palate surgery on our bulldog pup when he was still a pup because his breathing was affected. The surgery resolved his breathing issues and he lived to 12 years - a long life for a bulldog.I especially appreciated how their staff showed their sympathy and compassion when we brought each of our dogs to them when they reached the end of their lives and how they administered the necessary treatment.They also have a kennel for their patients. I appreciated the fact that their patient dogs were given priority for kenneling and that  I felt comforted that they were in a vets clinic while we were away. (When kenneling a pet, expect them to be stressed since it is a drastic change in environment for them and they are in a 'kennel'. If you don't want them to undergo this environment then hire a pet sitter to watch them at your home. When we kenneled our 2 dogs we expected some readjustment on their part when they came home. It is to be expected when they have not seen us for several days plus they were in a different environment.)I highly recommend Southkent  based on our very positive experience with them. Read Less

This place is great. They really care about their clients. I used to work with an animal rescue and the rescue used Southkent vet as theirs. I used a different vet for my personal pets. One day my personal dog got in to some dog medicine and ate a whole bottle. We took him to our vet late on a Friday and he didn't have time for us. He said take him to the expensive emergency vet. I decided to call Southkent and they said "No Problem". I brought in a half dead, sick dog they never have seen before. They took care of him shipped him to another of their locations and had him on watch all weekend. They saved his life and earned a customer for life. I never went back to my original vet. Oh and total cost for IV's, weekend watch, untold other care....about $220 for a WHOLE WEEKEND. Southkent has gotten several work of mouth referrals from me. I drive by many vets to get to Southkent.
