I first came here when I lived in Lansing and got my boxer puppy Oliver. I brought my dog here a total of 3 times. After the 3rd time I decided i'd never return. I was 18 at the time, had grown up with dogs my whole life. The staff treated me as though I was a dumb college kid and didnt know how to care for a puppy. They SCOLDED me for the collar I had on my dog, proceeded to remove it, put another one on, and then CHARGE me for the one they put on. I left the clinic in tears. It was a special collar to teach puppies not to pull, and my dog was well over 40lbs at this time. I never returned, and even asked another vet about the collar I had on Oliver and they were just as disgusted with the way I was treated. Not to mention they were extremely rough with my puppy, holding him down and yelling at him (causing him to squeal in pain) when he was scared to get shots. DO NOT GO HERE. Read Less

I’ve been taking my dog to this vet since she was a pup. She’s currently 3 and, since an emergency vet visit about 2 years ago, she’s gotten more and more anxious every time she’s had to go. I’ve recommended this vet office to a handful of people, but after today, I'm not feeling as confident as I used to. I took her in today to get a blood test and a booster. Per usual, she was anxious and wanting to leave but walked back just fine. The first thing the assistant did was put the leash around her neck and lift her on the table. Being very obviously anxious, a pat on the head or some sort of attempt to gain her trust would have been nice. After this point, my dog needed her temp taken. I stood at her head providing calming words and petting her head while the assistant held her, and she tolerated the thermometer. After this point, my dog lost it. She was distraught and clearly terrified. Instead of trying to, again, provide calming words or gently petting her as to let her know she wasn’t trying to hurt her, she grabbed her by the skin on the back of her neck, pinned her to the table, and continued to yell at/scold her to calm down. At this point, I attempted to pet her and provide calm, consoling words to get her to calm down. When the assistant again attempted to hold onto her, she stated my dog tried to bite her and to get the muzzle. I did not see if my dog had nipped or not, but can say that she has NEVER bit someone EVER in her life, even when she’s clearly been terrified. So, the muzzle was put on, and the assistant again goes to grab her. My dog scratched her while trying to get free of her arms, and she (not the vet) states they will not be able to do the test or booster today, she will need to take something to calm her down before next time, and we will have to come back. At this point, I did not disagree. My dog was extremely overwhelmed and distraught. They gave me a script for pills that will calm my dog down for her next appointment and that’s all I was charged for. As usual, the vet was very nice, especially when we were leaving; however, I was very put off by how the assistant handled my dog and that the vet basically said nothing the entire time. It seemed as if the assistant was telling the vet what was necessary, not vice versa. I understand my dog is a handful at the vet’s office and was extremely apologetic about the events today, but I don’t feel that grabbing her by the back of her neck and yelling at her helped the situation by any means. Having just moved about an hour away from the area, I considered switching vets but decided to continue to take her to this vet office because I’ve never had any issues and have really liked the vet and assistant we typically have when here. After this, I feel I need to explore other options, and am very fearful that this experience will have only made her more anxious and less trusting. I can imagine the next vet visit will be that much more difficult. Read Less

For our first visit, our appointment was at 5 pm. We showed up 10-15 minutes early. We sat there till 5:45. Finally, we just left. No communication, no apologies. Our poor cat had to sit out in the waiting room while all these dogs were brought in. NOT A CAT FRIENDLY PLACE. It sucks because this place is so close to our new house. We will be seeking a more cat friendly vet. On a side note - my husband filled out the questionnaire for our visit. There's a question on there asking if we viewed our pet as a 'pet' or as a 'family member'. Seriously? All pets should be treated as family. This is not philosophy we can endorse.Read Less

Today we took our cat Riley in today because he was literally trying to bite his skin off. They said he had fleas and that he was severely allergic. I've never had a flea issue before so I had no idea how to help him or fix it. The vet and assistant walked me through what to do and set me up with all the stuff. They gave Riley a steroid shot for some temporary relief. Hes been sleeping at home since! The itching was so bad he wasnt sleeping! They are always so nice (we take our new dog, Molly there as well), do their best to get you an appointment asap, get you in and out of the office in a timely manner, and explain everything so well! For the last 16 years my family has brought all of our pets here and up until this year everything was great, extremely friendly and loving staff, they knew our pets when we brought them in. My oldest cat was very ill earlier this year and my mom called to make an appointment but apparently her name and the cats name weren't found on file which shouldn't have 1. Happened or 2. Mattered since my cat had been in several times. The lady then accidentally hung up on my mom while on hold and never bothered to call back. My mom called again to make an appointment (the last vet appointment 3 months prior we were told my cats kidneys were failing) but the topic of her kidneys were brushed off and my mom was told "she might snap out of it". We ended up taking our cat to MSU to have her put down that night. That was the first bad experience I've encountered. I decided to give it another shot and take my other cat in last week because I was concerned about bumps on her skin. First off, the staff had their dogs in the back (usually I wouldn't care) but they seemed way more concerned with their own pets then they were mine. When We first got back into the room we stood there while they yelled at and situated their own dogs and in the middle of that, one dog walked into the room with us. which I'm sure my cat just loved being that she's afraid of dogs. They Never closed the door to the room we were in so we could hear the dogs barking literally right outside of the door. The staff wasn't their usual friendly self that day either they seemed to have little interest in the cat, more annoyance. They took my cat into the back to wash her ears out but I kept hearing my cat meowing really loud almost sounding like she was screaming and when they brought her back my cats nails were bleeding. I know that it happens occasionally when clipping nails and my cat isn't the easiest but not more than one of her nails should have been bleeding. It then it clicked why she was meowing like that she was probably in pain from carelessly chopping her fucking nails. We checked out and left and realized the name on the receipt was completely wrong so I have a feeling if I called back my actually name wouldn't be on file either. I never complain and I've loved this place up until now but with two bad experiences in less than a year, It has turned me off from this place completely. I will no longer bring my pets here and I will recommend going else where to anyone who asks. I'm beyond disgusted at how my cat was treated.Read Less

Michael and I moved from South Lansing to East Lansing and decided we wanted a new vet that was closer to home for our dog Zoey. As any pet parent may understand this was a difficult decision for us. Zoey had been with the same vet for the almost 5.5 years I had owned her. She is very skiddish around new people and isn't the biggest fan of the vet in the first place...much like children aren't a huge fan of the doctor or dentist appointment. But we knew it was best for us to change to somewhere closer to home. We did a little research and received a few referrals and in the end I called Abbott Road Animal Clinic and explained our situation and asked if I could come in to see the facility and meet folks. They said "of course". So I went and checked out the clinic and very much liked it. It was comfortable, cozy and clean. The staff I was able to meet was very kind and listened to my concerns. A few weeks later my husband took Zoey to her first vet appointment there. She saw Dr. Missy Crandall who came highly recommended from several friends. Zoey did really well with all the new people and they gave her lots of love and treats. My husband said there were 5 people in the room (I think the have students shadowing them) and she didn't freak out at all. I happy to hear this and EXTREMELY happy to have found our new friends at Abbott Road Animal Clinic. Thank you to everyone who took care of my furbaby. She is truly my heart and I thank you for your kindness to her.Read Less

This was an amazing place to take your pet years ago. I have been a loyal customer for 13 years since my dog was a puppy. I have recommended numerous people to bring there pet here over the years and always thought the same things that many other people have said. Doctors are great and nice. However, all that has changed they have gotten to many clients and all they care about is more clients. No attention is given to older dogs and when you actually need their help they refer to MSU animal clinic. I have never felt more betrayed that a vet has no problem taking $1000's of dollars from me over the years to not be there when you need them most. I will never recommend anyone to fall for the same trap I did. Read Less

I love Dr. Mary and more importantly so do my animals. My dog runs into the door from the parking lot because he is so excited to see her. I have taken all my animals there over the years. I have one problem that is a concern. My dog had to stay in her Kennel once. He came home with kennel cough. When I took him back- she said it was going around at the local apartment house-- My dog was in her kennel not an apartment house. I guess what I'm saying is that I was disappointed that I paid her for another appointment plus medication for a common illness that was obviously contracted in her kennel. I'm disappointed at her lack of responsibility. So this is the reason for 4 stars, not 5. As far as her care of my animal is concerned- They love her and that speaks volumes.Read Less

Read Less

They remember every animal that has been there before and show the same loving care their owners have for them. The Abbot Road Animal Clinic group is the best around.
