I recently had to take my dog to the emergency vet in MSU. She was in really bad shape, something neurological, we knew for sure. They were so sweet to her. Caring, thorough, gentle, and kind. The neurologist ended up coming to see her, Dr. Wells, and I can’t say enough about how excellent the care was from her and her team. They were thorough in their testing and examinations, incredibly clear and timely with explaining what was happening with her, excellent at explaining all of the options, and so helpful in helping me decide what was best for her. Even though we ended up losing her, they made the whole process the best that it could possibly be. They were kind, sympathetic, patient, and gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye. They were so good to us through an otherwise horrific experience. They made it bearable. I am so grateful for the excellent care they showed our beloved best friend.

Do not waste your time going here, or your money. Everything is twice as expensive and your regular vet can give you all the same services for half the money and half the time. This place is a joke. The students come in and talk to you and do not know much half the time. When you need an answer and try to reach out to the vet, the receptionists are rude and do not help. We had an emergency and received 0 help. Ended up asking our normal vet who was more helpful and had better answers. Very disappointed and would never go back here and waste my time and money. $1400 dollars not well spent!

MSU Vet Clinic is awful! Every time I've used their services they give me some dire death related illness with one of my animals. I've brought a kitten there and was told by one of the students that my kitten had feline AIDS and would die soon and if he was around other cats he'd infect them, so I ended giving him back to the humane society, and it was not easy, I loved that kitten! A year or so ago I heard from a Vet that she was erroneous about what she said and explained it to me, as it turns out he was not a threat of death and he was not going to infect the rest of my cats!!! Hurt! Anyway, fast forward, a dog, again he's dying, he was like 3 years old at the time. Needless to say I was skeptical and took him immediately to his vet on Monday and he was fine, he had pulled a muscle in his lower back, needed a pain/relaxer and a few days rest, good as new. Wow! Lastly, took our rabbit to them when they used to service 911 calls, and they said the same thing, he's dying!! Look I know they are all learning, but there is a senior (PhD) staff member who has experience to help them with the diagnosis, it still came back with death. Again, took the rabbit to the his Vet (Williamston Cedar Creek Vet. Clinic=AMAZING!!!) and it was nothing serious. To top it all off with all of these hassles and near scares, erroneous conclusions they charge waaaay too much for their services! We'd walk out paying at least $200-400, plus their regular Vet with another $25-150 (which is reasonable). I do not believe this school is competent in their analysis and they are very nonchalant about it like they KNOW what they are talking about, it's insane and the price is so ridiculous that it makes them look like con artists. Unless you have too, I would not take my animals to MSU, I'd wait if you can to take them to their regular vet, if that is not possible, save money to be able to pay for it cause it costs a lot to get the wrong diagnosis.

We were referred by our regular veterinarian when our puppy hurt his leg....we came in and were seen almost immediately and they scheduled him for surgery to repair his femur the following day, but they called and said they would operate that evening...just went back for his 6 week check up and they are very pleased with his progress.
Would bring my animals here in the future if needed....

My whole experience here was a nightmare. So, they charged me a little under $10,000 for surgery for my dog and a few days' monitoring, discharged her too soon and I had to bring her back, then discharged her again and she was still sick after. Their only advice was to bring her back again, when I said I couldn't pay anymore, they wouldn't talk to me again. They gave poor aftercare advice (said she didn't need a special diet when we asked, or specify that she needs strict bedrest, and said she didn't need to take her antibiotics when I called and said she was giving us trouble taking them; turns out I needed to buy a pill shooter). She was sick because the perforation in her stomach they were supposed to fix reopened, and she got an abscess and was infected by streptococcus and coccidia while she was there (which would have cleared up with the antibiotics they said she didn't need). So, next I took her to OVRS in Bloomfield Hills. She needed another surgery there, but I'm so glad I didn't take her back to MSU. If you have a real emergency, please go to OVRS because they treat you with respect and not just like a dollar sign. They actually know what they're doing, call to check on your pet, give great aftercare advice, send get well cards, etc. She's finally recovering now. Even if I lived in Lansing, I'd still make the drive to OVRS if I had a pet emergency. I wasn't going to review MSU at all and waited over a month to do so, but I honestly don't want anyone else to go through what we did. Sorry.

NEVER OFFERED HER THE EMERGENCY FUND FOR PPL THAT CAN'T PAY. Then told her surgery would be $3000-$5000. But another vet did everything and surgery for $1700. Very very poor service, no compassion or care for the dog, our baby and family member. Their ONLY concern was the payment

This is a TEACHING hospital who staffs clinical academic limited licensees. When faced with an emergency situation this piece of garbage establishment gives you three options. Option #1 save your animals life if you can come up with 3-5000 dollars (which will change to 4-6000 and then change to 6-8000). Option #2 humane euthanasia, which the students will tell you is much cheaper than life saving surgery. Option #3 take your animal home to die, but still pay the 135 dollar exam fee plus whatever else they say they have done to your animal.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE!
A licensee who is to work under the supervision of a fully licensed veterinarian informed me my dog would die if not put into surgery immediately, with no veterinarian present. I was forced to come up with 1,000 dollars for them to keep him hydrated for 6 hours so I could take him to another vet who charged me the same amount to do the surgery MSU charged me to keep iv fluids in my dog.
It is completely disgusting how badly MSU needs money that they put people in this kind of position. I would have given 0 stars if I had the option.

After struggling to control our dog's skin issues and allergies we finally took him to see a specialist. I'll get straight to the point - Dr. Zhou and the entire staff are amazing. Dr. Zhou took his time to fully understand our concerns and also took his time examing Buddie. He actually recommended a different course of action that what we requested and we are so thankful he did. Buddie hasn't looked this good in years and the course of treatment recommended was less invasive and less costly than what we were planning on. We couldn't be happier with the care that
Buddie has received!

When our 2 year old puppy tore ligaments in his leg, our vet referred us here. They did a major surgery, implanting a large metal plate. The veterinarian doctors were as professional (and as expensive) as you'd expect a surgeon who treats humans to be. They cared for him and have allowed him to continue to play fetch for six years and counting!! It was a big sacrifice for us since we had to sell one of our cars, but we'd do it all over again in a second. For our new puppy, we got health insurance so we know we'll be able to afford emergencies in the future. Thank you, MSU for working a miracle on our baby!

I was here in December. My kitty was suffering from poisoning from Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil. I didn't know it at the time. I asked the doctor how much it would be to put her to sleep. He said $15-20. Last night I called and they they said that if I brought her in through emergency services that it would cost $123 to have her put to sleep. I had to make an appointment and then it would be $45.
I wish medical professionals knew what the hell they were talking about. My kitty passed during the night. No need for your stupid appointment. Thank you for you compassionate care of my beloved furbaby. /sarcasm.

I don't usually write negative reviews. But I had such a bad experience with the Veterinary Medical Center at MSU that I felt I have to make an exception in this case. A little over a year ago, my ex-roommate's cat injured his paw. Since it was at night during the weekend, I took him to MSU. Everything seemed to go fairly normally--at first. I was sitting in the waiting room, alongside my ex-roommate, reading a book about different cat breeds, and waiting (I thought) for the vet to examine the cat. Imagine my surprise when I looked up and saw a cop standing in front of us, shining a flashlight in our faces, and asking if we had been drinking.
I am a fairly light, occasional drinker, and I hadn't had anything to drink that night. My ex-roommate is a paranoid schizophrenic, and takes anti-psychotic medication prescribed by a doctor to control his condition. He hadn't had anything to drink either. Neither of us was acting bizarrely in any way. I immediately got into a confrontation, both with the cop and with the veterinary assistant who had called the police. She could have spoken to me about why my ex-roommate seemed to be a little bit "out of it", and I would have explained the situation. All I got from either the cop or the veterinary assistant was a blizzard of BS, and the veterinary assistant acted in a very demeaning and condescending way.
To make matters worse, they left a clamp in the cat's leg (which I didn't discover until we got home), and charged me an outrageous fee. I have two cats of my own, which I dearly love, and which occasionally need emergency veterinary care. But I absolutely don't ever want to deal with MSU again. Is there an alternative for after-hours veterinary care?

When my 6 month old kitten sneaked into my backpack overnight and ate some almonds he started throwing up and retching 2 days later I knew something was wrong. I called my regular vet and she told me to take him here for at least an X-ray to r/o an obstruction. Turns out he had a SBO from an almond that had enlarged due to the moisture. They waiting for my go for surgery which was an laparotomy with enterotomy. Thenprices was outlined with a CMP and blood gasses an IV one dose of an Kefzol, a few doses of Zofran, and a few doses of Buprenophine totaled $2778. They saved my cats life. Yes it costs money but the care is incredible and the staff impeccable.

While we've always been very happy with the care our cats have received there, the receptionists over the phone have been problematic as of the past couple years. They're almost always rude and condescending. This treatment by the receptionists is getting old, especially after the many thousands of dollars we've shelled out over the years, and therefore we may start taking our cats elsewhere for routine check-ups. We've come to hate having to call them... On another note, recently we called to confirm the time of an appointment for our cat that was made over two weeks prior, and they had no record of it. This is concerning. So we recommend that you call the day before a scheduled appointment to confirm it...

Very rude over the phone. It costs 133 dollars just for your pet to be seen if it is after five or anytime on the weekend. Pathetic considering these are not even real vets yet, but students. You would think MSU would do more to help benefit pet owners in their community, but this is obviously far from the case. I recommend going to Mt. Hope Veterinary Clinic instead, they have always been good to me and my pets.

We have 4 dogs and all have been seen here from issues ranging from kennel cough to life threatening immune mediated issues.
Staff is wonderful, costs are clearly outlined at your visit and vets have good bedside manor.
You'll get no complaints from me about costs. I've always gone as an emergency and know there's a premium to pay for that and the high level of care they provide.

I had very obvious body language that said "do not approach". If I wasn't distressed that woman would have a bloody nose right now. We recently had our dog into the MSU small animal clinic for surgery on his leg due to an injury that completely tore his ligament and relocated a few of the smaller bones in his foot. A lot of other reviewers on here post about the cost for bringing your pet here. Is it expensive? Yes. Is that what you signed up for when you decided to have a pet be part of your family? Yes. The staff at MSU was more than friendly and truly cared for the health and wellbeing of our dog. We were given very clearly explained options for treatment and were called the morning of, as they were going into surgery, immediately after, and later that night with status updates of how he was doing. While it is expensive - you get what you pay for. I would not hesitate to bring either of my dogs back here or recommend other family and friends to bring there's. Excellent work MSU!

Straight robbery. Brought cat in told he has heart failure asked to leave him overnight for observation quoted $800-1200. Left him thinking he may die at any moment. Paid $600 before leaving. Later told its asthma and sent home with steroids which have so far triggered attacks. Called them to get the run around told I am putting his meds down the wrong pipe. I paid over 1k with no answers or straight diagnosis and still they have no idea if it's a heart problem or just asthma. From the time I left him at 9:30pm to when I picked him up at noon that was an additional $400! To observe him and they didn't explain anything at all what had happened what they did or anything. You would think these doctors were getting commissions as sales reps not trying to save lives. Not to mention the dude at the counter is just rude. Never going back there again.

I recently had to take my dog to the emergency vet in MSU. She was in really bad shape, something neurological, we knew for sure. They were so sweet to her. Caring, thorough, gentle, and kind. The neurologist ended up coming to see her, Dr. Wells, and I can’t say enough about how excellent the care was from her and her team. They were thorough in their testing and examinations, incredibly clear and timely with explaining what was happening with her, excellent at explaining all of the options, and so helpful in helping me decide what was best for her. Even though we ended up losing her, they made the whole process the best that it could possibly be. They were kind, sympathetic, patient, and gave us all the time we needed to say goodbye. They were so good to us through an otherwise horrific experience. They made it bearable. I am so grateful for the excellent care they showed our beloved best friend.

Do not waste your time going here, or your money. Everything is twice as expensive and your regular vet can give you all the same services for half the money and half the time. This place is a joke. The students come in and talk to you and do not know much half the time. When you need an answer and try to reach out to the vet, the receptionists are rude and do not help. We had an emergency and received 0 help. Ended up asking our normal vet who was more helpful and had better answers. Very disappointed and would never go back here and waste my time and money. $1400 dollars not well spent!

MSU Vet Clinic is awful! Every time I've used their services they give me some dire death related illness with one of my animals. I've brought a kitten there and was told by one of the students that my kitten had feline AIDS and would die soon and if he was around other cats he'd infect them, so I ended giving him back to the humane society, and it was not easy, I loved that kitten! A year or so ago I heard from a Vet that she was erroneous about what she said and explained it to me, as it turns out he was not a threat of death and he was not going to infect the rest of my cats!!! Hurt! Anyway, fast forward, a dog, again he's dying, he was like 3 years old at the time. Needless to say I was skeptical and took him immediately to his vet on Monday and he was fine, he had pulled a muscle in his lower back, needed a pain/relaxer and a few days rest, good as new. Wow! Lastly, took our rabbit to them when they used to service 911 calls, and they said the same thing, he's dying!! Look I know they are all learning, but there is a senior (PhD) staff member who has experience to help them with the diagnosis, it still came back with death. Again, took the rabbit to the his Vet (Williamston Cedar Creek Vet. Clinic=AMAZING!!!) and it was nothing serious. To top it all off with all of these hassles and near scares, erroneous conclusions they charge waaaay too much for their services! We'd walk out paying at least $200-400, plus their regular Vet with another $25-150 (which is reasonable). I do not believe this school is competent in their analysis and they are very nonchalant about it like they KNOW what they are talking about, it's insane and the price is so ridiculous that it makes them look like con artists. Unless you have too, I would not take my animals to MSU, I'd wait if you can to take them to their regular vet, if that is not possible, save money to be able to pay for it cause it costs a lot to get the wrong diagnosis.

We were referred by our regular veterinarian when our puppy hurt his leg....we came in and were seen almost immediately and they scheduled him for surgery to repair his femur the following day, but they called and said they would operate that evening...just went back for his 6 week check up and they are very pleased with his progress.
Would bring my animals here in the future if needed....

My whole experience here was a nightmare. So, they charged me a little under $10,000 for surgery for my dog and a few days' monitoring, discharged her too soon and I had to bring her back, then discharged her again and she was still sick after. Their only advice was to bring her back again, when I said I couldn't pay anymore, they wouldn't talk to me again. They gave poor aftercare advice (said she didn't need a special diet when we asked, or specify that she needs strict bedrest, and said she didn't need to take her antibiotics when I called and said she was giving us trouble taking them; turns out I needed to buy a pill shooter). She was sick because the perforation in her stomach they were supposed to fix reopened, and she got an abscess and was infected by streptococcus and coccidia while she was there (which would have cleared up with the antibiotics they said she didn't need). So, next I took her to OVRS in Bloomfield Hills. She needed another surgery there, but I'm so glad I didn't take her back to MSU. If you have a real emergency, please go to OVRS because they treat you with respect and not just like a dollar sign. They actually know what they're doing, call to check on your pet, give great aftercare advice, send get well cards, etc. She's finally recovering now. Even if I lived in Lansing, I'd still make the drive to OVRS if I had a pet emergency. I wasn't going to review MSU at all and waited over a month to do so, but I honestly don't want anyone else to go through what we did. Sorry.

NEVER OFFERED HER THE EMERGENCY FUND FOR PPL THAT CAN'T PAY. Then told her surgery would be $3000-$5000. But another vet did everything and surgery for $1700. Very very poor service, no compassion or care for the dog, our baby and family member. Their ONLY concern was the payment

This is a TEACHING hospital who staffs clinical academic limited licensees. When faced with an emergency situation this piece of garbage establishment gives you three options. Option #1 save your animals life if you can come up with 3-5000 dollars (which will change to 4-6000 and then change to 6-8000). Option #2 humane euthanasia, which the students will tell you is much cheaper than life saving surgery. Option #3 take your animal home to die, but still pay the 135 dollar exam fee plus whatever else they say they have done to your animal.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE!
A licensee who is to work under the supervision of a fully licensed veterinarian informed me my dog would die if not put into surgery immediately, with no veterinarian present. I was forced to come up with 1,000 dollars for them to keep him hydrated for 6 hours so I could take him to another vet who charged me the same amount to do the surgery MSU charged me to keep iv fluids in my dog.
It is completely disgusting how badly MSU needs money that they put people in this kind of position. I would have given 0 stars if I had the option.

After struggling to control our dog's skin issues and allergies we finally took him to see a specialist. I'll get straight to the point - Dr. Zhou and the entire staff are amazing. Dr. Zhou took his time to fully understand our concerns and also took his time examing Buddie. He actually recommended a different course of action that what we requested and we are so thankful he did. Buddie hasn't looked this good in years and the course of treatment recommended was less invasive and less costly than what we were planning on. We couldn't be happier with the care that
Buddie has received!

When our 2 year old puppy tore ligaments in his leg, our vet referred us here. They did a major surgery, implanting a large metal plate. The veterinarian doctors were as professional (and as expensive) as you'd expect a surgeon who treats humans to be. They cared for him and have allowed him to continue to play fetch for six years and counting!! It was a big sacrifice for us since we had to sell one of our cars, but we'd do it all over again in a second. For our new puppy, we got health insurance so we know we'll be able to afford emergencies in the future. Thank you, MSU for working a miracle on our baby!

I was here in December. My kitty was suffering from poisoning from Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil. I didn't know it at the time. I asked the doctor how much it would be to put her to sleep. He said $15-20. Last night I called and they they said that if I brought her in through emergency services that it would cost $123 to have her put to sleep. I had to make an appointment and then it would be $45.
I wish medical professionals knew what the hell they were talking about. My kitty passed during the night. No need for your stupid appointment. Thank you for you compassionate care of my beloved furbaby. /sarcasm.

I don't usually write negative reviews. But I had such a bad experience with the Veterinary Medical Center at MSU that I felt I have to make an exception in this case. A little over a year ago, my ex-roommate's cat injured his paw. Since it was at night during the weekend, I took him to MSU. Everything seemed to go fairly normally--at first. I was sitting in the waiting room, alongside my ex-roommate, reading a book about different cat breeds, and waiting (I thought) for the vet to examine the cat. Imagine my surprise when I looked up and saw a cop standing in front of us, shining a flashlight in our faces, and asking if we had been drinking.
I am a fairly light, occasional drinker, and I hadn't had anything to drink that night. My ex-roommate is a paranoid schizophrenic, and takes anti-psychotic medication prescribed by a doctor to control his condition. He hadn't had anything to drink either. Neither of us was acting bizarrely in any way. I immediately got into a confrontation, both with the cop and with the veterinary assistant who had called the police. She could have spoken to me about why my ex-roommate seemed to be a little bit "out of it", and I would have explained the situation. All I got from either the cop or the veterinary assistant was a blizzard of BS, and the veterinary assistant acted in a very demeaning and condescending way.
To make matters worse, they left a clamp in the cat's leg (which I didn't discover until we got home), and charged me an outrageous fee. I have two cats of my own, which I dearly love, and which occasionally need emergency veterinary care. But I absolutely don't ever want to deal with MSU again. Is there an alternative for after-hours veterinary care?

When my 6 month old kitten sneaked into my backpack overnight and ate some almonds he started throwing up and retching 2 days later I knew something was wrong. I called my regular vet and she told me to take him here for at least an X-ray to r/o an obstruction. Turns out he had a SBO from an almond that had enlarged due to the moisture. They waiting for my go for surgery which was an laparotomy with enterotomy. Thenprices was outlined with a CMP and blood gasses an IV one dose of an Kefzol, a few doses of Zofran, and a few doses of Buprenophine totaled $2778. They saved my cats life. Yes it costs money but the care is incredible and the staff impeccable.

While we've always been very happy with the care our cats have received there, the receptionists over the phone have been problematic as of the past couple years. They're almost always rude and condescending. This treatment by the receptionists is getting old, especially after the many thousands of dollars we've shelled out over the years, and therefore we may start taking our cats elsewhere for routine check-ups. We've come to hate having to call them... On another note, recently we called to confirm the time of an appointment for our cat that was made over two weeks prior, and they had no record of it. This is concerning. So we recommend that you call the day before a scheduled appointment to confirm it...

Very rude over the phone. It costs 133 dollars just for your pet to be seen if it is after five or anytime on the weekend. Pathetic considering these are not even real vets yet, but students. You would think MSU would do more to help benefit pet owners in their community, but this is obviously far from the case. I recommend going to Mt. Hope Veterinary Clinic instead, they have always been good to me and my pets.

We have 4 dogs and all have been seen here from issues ranging from kennel cough to life threatening immune mediated issues.
Staff is wonderful, costs are clearly outlined at your visit and vets have good bedside manor.
You'll get no complaints from me about costs. I've always gone as an emergency and know there's a premium to pay for that and the high level of care they provide.

I was there today to have my cat euthanized after a very long battle with feline herpes in the lungs. As I paced the waiting area a social worker came over to carelessly talk about why I'm there. I had very obvious body language that said "do not approach". If I wasn't distressed that woman would have a bloody nose right now. I will give the rest of the staff five stars because they were just wonderful!

We recently had our dog into the MSU small animal clinic for surgery on his leg due to an injury that completely tore his ligament and relocated a few of the smaller bones in his foot. A lot of other reviewers on here post about the cost for bringing your pet here. Is it expensive? Yes. Is that what you signed up for when you decided to have a pet be part of your family? Yes. The staff at MSU was more than friendly and truly cared for the health and wellbeing of our dog. We were given very clearly explained options for treatment and were called the morning of, as they were going into surgery, immediately after, and later that night with status updates of how he was doing. While it is expensive - you get what you pay for. I would not hesitate to bring either of my dogs back here or recommend other family and friends to bring there's. Excellent work MSU!

Straight robbery. Brought cat in told he has heart failure asked to leave him overnight for observation quoted $800-1200. Left him thinking he may die at any moment. Paid $600 before leaving. Later told its asthma and sent home with steroids which have so far triggered attacks. Called them to get the run around told I am putting his meds down the wrong pipe. I paid over 1k with no answers or straight diagnosis and still they have no idea if it's a heart problem or just asthma. From the time I left him at 9:30pm to when I picked him up at noon that was an additional $400! To observe him and they didn't explain anything at all what had happened what they did or anything. You would think these doctors were getting commissions as sales reps not trying to save lives. Not to mention the dude at the counter is just rude. Never going back there again.
