0/10 Unfortunately, our dog had an emergency situation and more unfortunately, BluePearl was the only emergency animal facility that was able to provide the services we needed. We didn’t get the news we had hoped for and ultimately made the decision it was in the best interest of our friend to put him down. I discussed the end-of-life options with the front desk. The option we chose was based upon the description given to me which was the private cremation package at nearly $600.00. We were ok with the cost given the description of what the package included. The description was basically a private cremation, and the remains would be delivered in a beautiful clay pot as well as our pup’s paw print set in clay. One week later I picked up the remains in a cheap tin container with the lid scotch taped on…No clay pot, No paw print. Yes, you read that all correctly. Tin box, lid taped on, no clay pot, no paw print…$600.00 Immediately I called BluePearl who doubled down on their claim that the package came with a paw print, the remains would be in a clay pot and there must have been a mix up…there wasn’t. They weren’t willing to offer any refund for the end-of-life package I ordered. They blamed the cremation house for the error and gave me a dismissive apology. I didn’t pay the cremation house, I paid BluePearl a surcharged rate (I’ve since learned it’s cheaper to take your pet directly to the cremation house) and BluePearl did not deliver what they sold to me. I will never return to, or support, Blue Pearl and would certainly never recommend them…unless it’s where to avoid. Read Less

I wish we would have read other reviews before bringing our puppy here but sadly that wasnt the case so hopefully other people will reserch before coming here because all they want is money. Our puppy wasnt feeling himself and it was after hours so the closest option was here. After a 4 hour wait they finally looked at him and said that he was just uncomfortable from aome food bloat. After they gave him some relaxers and said he was stable they wanted to run a couple more test. When they got the blood results back they said his liver wasnt working and that he needed to be hooked up to an iv and kept there until a specialist could see him. They gave us a quote for almost $10,000 and pretty much said he we pay that and that buys him time until the specialist comes up with a solution or we take him home and he suffers or we put him down everything they say is to make you feel bad and spend money so your pet doesnt suffer. Sitting in that room waiting was the saddest place every because almost every person that walked in with their pet left in tears without them weather they were put down or getting expensive treatment not knowing if they could pay this months bills or send their kids to college... First off, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way. This place is expensive. If that bothers you, I recommend going elsewhere. Their emergency services are great. Our dog broke her leg after hours and they were able to get her in and comfortable quickly. The staff was friendly, professional, and to the point. Why not 5 stars? Their non - emergency (follow up appointment and diagnosis in our case) services were at least two to three times as expensive as our current vet, and the surgery my dog needed was 3x as much as two other vets we contacted, one of which we ended up using. Again, I'm sure their quality and professionalism is worth the extra cost to some, however we simply couldn't afford it. I would 100% recommend BluePearl for absolute emergencies though. Read Less

I brought my 10 month old puppy here after she was vomiting and pooping blood. I didn't have time to browse for other ER Vets in the area and this one was the closest to my house. I waited to see someone for about 2 hours, as they were extremely busy that night (but when isn't an ER?), which was disappointing as my dog was shaking and continued to bleed. While waiting, I was reading reviews for BluePearl and was worried I made the wrong decision bringing her here. Many reviews stated they do not care about the animals and just want to money gouge. After my pup was admitted, I did not feel that way AT ALL and am so glad I brought my precious girl here. The specialists gave a thorough examination, and although it was expensive, I don't regret it because I now have the peace of mind that she is healthy. I would definitely recommend BluePearl for an emergency/crisis with your pet. She was well cared for and given the best medical attention. The staff even sent pictures as I was at work. Only complaint I have is that it took several hours longer than estimated for them to call back and give me the diagnosis. Read Less

BluePearl likely saved my cat's life some two years ago and has been incredible with my dog most recently. They have a very compassionate team and I've always felt welcomed and appreciated by the staff - even when it's just on the phone. To be fair, BluePearl's services aren't cheap but when it comes to your pets and their health, you often get what you pay for and I see BluePearl as being a top-notch provider in my area. They give you multiple price options to best care for your pet (good, better, best care levels) and their procedures work! I'll continue to use them. Read Less

We took our dog to the ER at blue pearl recently and I would not take her anywhere else. The staff was friendly and understanding. We saw Dr. Newman for an emergency on a night when they were very busy- he was nice, answered all of our questions, and at no time did I feel that he was in a rush. We have seen a specialist at blue pearl before so going there for emergency care was a no brainer. The facility is also very clean. We did wait an hour after being roomed to see the doctor and I wish we would have been updated on our wait time or had someone come to check on us. Regardless, if we ever need emergency care for our dog again we will go back to blue pearl. Thank you Dr Newman and staff for the excellent care! Read Less

I found a stray cat in obvious need of veterinary care and called BluePearl as they were the only clinic open at the time. They advised me to come in immediately and I agreed, therefore they knew I was coming (I.e. I made an appointment). After waiting for three total hours in the middle of the night with no one else in the waiting room, I was told that the only way to tell if something was truly wrong with the cat involved conducting an exam. Also, they told me that my paying for the exam was the only option if the clinic was to consider taking the cat into their care and finding it a home or shelter. Finally, I agreed to pay $105 for a supposed “extensive exam” for which the vet was in the room for the entirety of about 2 minutes. This “exam” involved feeling the cat’s abdomen, holding a stethoscope up to its lungs, and touching it’s face. Despite my well-voiced concerns about a possible abscess in the mouth and the cat’s clear difficulty breathing, the vet did not even look into the cat’s mouth nor conduct any kind of testing. After the 2 minute “exam,” I was told that the cat seemed fine (go figure!) and that I would need to find it a shelter. I understand that they cannot take in every stray animal, however, I left with the cat feeling more hopeless than I did coming in, and felt that I was out $105 for nothing. The only good that came out of this visit was the handwritten list of no-kill shelter names and numbers to call after the visit, given to me by the vet tech. Three stars are for the kindness and sincerity of the vet tech as well as for being the only vet clinic in the area open 24/7. While I was not super satisfied with my visit, I was at least able to bring the cat somewhere for emergency care. Read Less

Every employee here, from the cashier to the techs to the doctors was so incredibly kind and gentle when I brought in my dying dog. Expensive. I live 2.5 hours away. After a $400.00 diagnoses. (Another Vet took the x-rays that I had already paid for.) The morning of the operation I was half way to Grand Rapids when they called my cell phone and told me the Radiologist wasn't coming and postponed the operation. (They did tell me they could do the ctScan someplace else but it would cost more than the $5300.00 they were going to charge me.) So I went to another Vet (VetMed in Bay City) and they said they would do the operation for $1500.00. Blue Pearl uses your love for your pet as a profit factor. Blue Pearl is all about the money. Saved my cats life! He had developed difficulty breathing over several days, and declined rapidly, to where he could not even walk a few steps. I had to take him here on the weekend and they were very busy. Nevertheless, they took him back immediately and put him in an oxygen chamber. He had to stay the night, and they diagnosed an exacerbation of heart failure. Now on meds for that. It was pricey, but they run and staff a complex facility 24/7, so I think the cost is the consequence of having that service available. It was worth it to keep my little guy around - I don't think he would have made it another night, and I am grateful for what they did for him. Read Less

Great care for our dog except when we had our dog euthanized. Sedative was given and not enough time passed for our dog to go to sleep before her heart was stopped. Medication was given right after one another. VERY bad process at Blue Pearl and a painful last memory of our dog as she showed pain and arched her back and neck in pain. We had another one of our dogs euthanized due to old age at another vet and the process was MUCH smoother. He was sleeping peacefully for several minutes and then the vet stopped his heart. When our dog passed away they sent us a sympathy card that was very heart-felt with a message from every staff person that worked with him. Treatment was very expensive but they were upfront about costs and possible outcomes. I was never pressured to move forward - it was all handled with a lot of sensitivity. Cons:Expensive. It's emergency care so an up charge is expected. It does seem ridiculously high - even considering that - but you're stuck when your animal is sick or injured and the vet is closed.Slow. Every part of the process takes an hour. From Triage to waiting in the lobby to sitting in a room waiting to see a vet to getting estimates to getting care, etc. I was there for two hours and I heard them telling people the wait was long because emergencies had just come in. Except in two hours no emergencies had come in. One woman had been there so long in a freezing room that she finally got fed up. We left our cat there for her laceration repair procedure (the tech said we could wait if we wanted because it wouldn't be long - ha!). Two and a half hours later I can't even get someone to come to the phone with an update. I just want my cat home.Vastly different estimates from the two vets we saw for the same issue. You'd think they're be universal procedures/pricing. Pros:Clean facility and most everyone was very nice. I'll let you know if they do a decent medical job - if my cat ever gets to come home. To be continued ... Nine hours or so later after being told she would have her sutures done "within the hour" at least four times, she is done. An hour ago they said she was coming out of anesthesia well and to come get her at 8 pm. Now - at 8:10 - when my husband gets there suddenly she is not coming out fast. Do they like people waiting? I don't get it. The doctor said one injury was infected so it must have been old  - then backpedaled when I told her the injury happened less than 24 hours before. I'll be interested to see what our personal vet says when I take her in and how much we just got fleeced. Read Less

The staff at BluePearl from the receptionist to the vet was amazing. They were kind, personable and communicated everything my cat was going to havend to go through to me very clearly. I even brought my best friend who is Vet Tech here in Grand Racids with me as a second opinion and she agreed with all of their information. My male cat, who was more like my son to me than anything I've ever had in my life yet, developed a severe urinary blockage. Right away they gave him pain medicine at no cost to me. They explained the process that they/he was going to have to go through to clear the blockage and help get him back to normal; they also explained that this was likely to return in his life time and cause him more pain and can potentially be fatal. Leaving my guy there to take care of everything was going to cost me more than my significant other and I could afford. I'm currently paying off students loans and we have been going through a long and hard cancer battle since my significant other had to leave work in June because of the unbearable pain he was in and the sudden loss of function in his legs (we finally found out in September that it was Large B-Cell Lymphoma within the spinal column and all over his sacral nerves). So needless to say, this expensive tragedy with my sweet little fur ball couldn't have come at a worst time. They then offered to do a lot of number crunching to get the main problem taken care of at BluePearl and then the rest of the process done at my primary vet. They managed to literally cut the price in half and I still couldn't afford it, at no fault of theirs because I completely understand that medical procedures are expensive and I truly believe they would have done an incredible job. They offered us water, coffee and tissues and allowed us to weigh our options and mourn in our own personal room. I am incredibly thankful for their hospitality and kind professionalism. My final option was to lay my sweet guy down to rest so that he didn't have to go through anymore pain. Everyone there was very warm and supportive and helped me accept that this was a humane decision and one that other fur parents have had to make. I was given two casts of his paw print with his name engraved on it for free and the funeral/cremation options were very reasonably priced. Before the series of unfortunate events we have been going through in our personal/medical/financial life, we would have been happy to pay BluePearl to take care of our guy but even our primary vet prices for the procedures he needed were beyond our current means. A few members of the staff generously signed a sympathy card for us and mailed it to us. Henry's remains were given back to me in a cute tin with a certificate of proof of cremation. Our overall experience with BluePearl was very pleasant. I highly recommend other fur parents look into them for emergency care for their fur babies if their primary vet is closed or unavailable. Had to take my five-year-old dog here at the start of the Fourth of July weekend after she unexpectedly became sick. The place was understandably busy. Waiting times were between 2-3 hours minimum before seeing the vet and in that time I was asked to repeatedly explain my dog's symptoms to numerous different staff members. Long story short, my dog passed away at BluePearl at the end of that weekend and what caused her death is still unknown to us. It was a devastating experience and, considering the circumstances, the staff did their best to be consoling. My impression was just that they were stretched thin over the holiday weekend. Ok so my friend recommended this place when my kitty wasn't breathing correctly. She had begun to become very weak. --Her and her mom LOVE their animals so I took her advice. I think it was a Sunday and I sat there for five hours while my cat was XRayed and put in an oxygen box. Another lady came in because her dog had fallen off of a balcony and had left very angrily after three hours of waiting. I stayed there simply because I did not want my cat to die and I didn't know where else to go that day. The staff had recommended that I keep my cat there overnight for testing and told me the testing would be $3000. I was a 21 year old at the time-where was I supposed to get that money. I was forced to believe that it was either every penny I had for my cats life. I called my mom and she had payed for the treatment of the day and had me take my cat home. blue pearl had given me an oral suspension for my cat that made her more sick as she would vomit from even the taste of it and was getting weaker due to starvation- throwing up when she was already not eating---Worried, I went to my vet. He gave my cat a 70$ shot and she was completely back to normal in days. Definitely can't return here after that. Note: NOT against the staff in any way! They DO care about your animal. Our vet in Kalamazoo recommended us to Bluepearl because Franks has eye trouble. After weeks of drops, antibiotics and steroids, we made an appointment with the ophthalmologist. We were a little surprised that the evaluation was just $165.We took Franks and were pleasantly surprised by Bluepearl. The staff was friendly, the clinic was clean and our appointment ran without a hitch. It turns out that Franks has severe glaucoma and needs to have his eye removed. We were given an estimate for the surgery from the vet at Bluepearl, but were surprised when our local vet said she would charge 4 times LESS.  The ophthalmologist we saw, Dr. Davidson, was patient with Franks. She answered all of my questions and she did a full work up of tests. When the tech came to get Franks to take him for the tests and I asked if I could go with him, they simply moved the tests to the exam room. This was kind of them. Franks is anxious and having his owners around helps. So, we left with a bill of $370, which was not a surprise, but still was super expensive. They had to do additional testing to Franks other eye and we had to pay for two prescriptions. I'm really glad we went because they have special equipment our local vet does not have. We needed to know exactly what was going on behind Franks' eyes and now we do. Our local vet will receive a report and we will work with her to schedule surgery and keep Franks' right eye healthy into the future. Read Less

If it were possible to leave zero stars, I would. Took our English Bulldog here because our vet -who apologized profusely afterward saying she didn't know what kind of a place it was until after she heard what horrible experiences we - and another client she sent there not knowing - had had. My vet was crying when she saw what they'd done to our dog and when I told her about our experience. She told me on our next visit that she'd called and had quite a talk with the office manager at Bluepearl and would NEVER send another client there. We had taken our dog there for an eye surgery because he had a condition Bulldogs get that their eyelids grow in such a way their lashes are scraping the eye. (Not cherry eye, another typical condition.)  Vet did the surgery and left our dog's eye that she operated on with a large, open gap underneath his eye - they lower lid was hanging down way too far! When we picked him up, the vet tech said it would heal up. I doubted it, but gave it a couple of weeks. Nothing changed. Took our dog back there to show them the obvious horrible job that had been done in their clinic - and mind you, this is after a $1,000+ vet bill for the operation - and the vet tech came running into the exam room with a camera, announcing, "They told me to take lots of pictures!" Uh-huh...sounded to me like they were preparing to be taken to court...  A vet - not the one who operated on our dog - came in. She looked at his eye with the lower lid gaping open and said, "Well, actually, this is better, because if he ever gets anything in his eye, it will wash out easier with the eye open like that."  ("Quack, quack, quack..."). We got the heck out of there, and took our dog to a specialist quite far away. Paid another $1200-1300 to get his eye corrected surgically to repair the mess Bluepearl's vet had made of it. Vet came out to talk to me after the surgery and he said he hadn't expected the surgery to take so long, but because he had so much work to do to correct the Bluepearl's vet's "work" it took him a while longer. I said I wasn't surprised after the first surgery had been so badly botched. He said he didn't like to say anything about other vets/clinics, but said "botched" was definitely the right word and that he had never seen so much scar tissue and such a poorly done procedure in one of these cases.  NO WAY WOULD I EVER, EVER TAKE ANY PET TO THIS PLACE AGAIN!!! Over the years, we have taken two of our dogs to MVS for emergency care in life-threatening situations. Their lives were saved  and they received excellent care. The doctors and staff kept us informed, and were quite knowledgeable and compassionate. I recommend MVS in the strongest of terms. Is this kind of care costly? Yes. The fees cover highly specialized equipment in a facility built for emergency services, highly specialized treatment, nurses/techs who are at the top of their profession, 24-hour care, and most of all, veterinarians with the highest degree of specialization and training. If your pet is seriously ill and you want to save their life or their health, THIS IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. Read Less

I would give this place negative stars, if possible and advise everyone to avoid it.  I was forced to bring a dog there in an emergency situation, as my normal vet was closed.  They sat us in an examination room ($93), with the small dog in a carrier and the assistant was able to take his vital signs.  He was very stressed out because he had been in a fight with another dog.  When the 'doctor' finally came in, she didn't even open the carrier and left to 'draw up an estimate'.  After another significant wait, the assisant came back with an estimate of between 500-700.  I balked, because remember, this estimate is based on the doctor peering through the holes in the carrier.  When she saw my reaction, she left to prepare another estimate, a different examination process that was $200.  I said okay.  We then left, expecting a phone call because they couldn't get him in right away.  They called about two hours later, saying that he needed surgery to live and that it was $3,500.  They also informed me that they refuse to do the surgery until 75% of the cost is payed up front.  I informed them that, actually, I didn't have the over two grand required to save his life.  "Unfortunately, that's our policy", they said.  I've since spoken to two veterinarians and described his exact condition, and they both expressed suprise and disgust at the practices of this clinic.  In sum, it cost me about five hundred dollars to take the dog somewhere else. I recently took a rescue kitty to Michigan Veterinary Specialists to be seen by an ophthalomogist for an eye problem.  I felt my cat received very good care.  The doctor and staff were very kind and knowledgable.  They answered all my questions while in the office, and also made themselves available for my questions after the visit, although I didn't need to take them up on this offer.  Each time I waited about 15 minutes  beyond my appointment time until I was seen; I have no problem with this given that I was scheduled for their last appointments of the day and I know appointments can take longer than what is scheduled.  From what I understand, this office mostly deals with medical situations requiring specialists - and they bill accordingly, so if money is an issue be sure to ask how much they charge before you make an appointment!  I visited this vet office three times in all for the problem my cat had.   The charge for the first visit was $160; the two succeeding followup visits were $135 each.  I was given two eye medications at the first visit, each one was about $43.  I later found out that one of these medications can be bought in any pharmacy without a prescription for only about $8.  Honestly, I was shocked, and then very disappointed.  When I followed up with the practice manager about this, she told me that they usually tell patients when a medication is available in the pharmacy for less and would be sure to cover the need to do so in their next staff meeting. She was very apologetic, but I have to say I still have a bad taste in my mouth about this.  It was a very good lesson for me and for anyone else reading this review that one should always ask if the prescribed medications are available for less at the pharmacy!  I run a rescue and have 5 of my own cats all requiring at least routine vet care.  I really would rather not pay $43 for something when $8 would have done the trick.

Read Less

We have seen a specialist at blue pearl before so going there for emergency care was a no brainer. The facility is also very clean. We did wait an hour after being roomed to see the doctor and I wish we would have been updated on our wait time or had someone come to check on us. Read Less

The morning of the operation I was half way to Grand Rapids when they called my cell phone and told me the Radiologist wasn't coming and postponed the operation. He had to stay the night, and they diagnosed an exacerbation of heart failure. Now on meds for that.

Overall, I think BluePearl is a respectable establishment that I hope you never have to bring your pet to. Read Less

I'm just confused as to why THEY told me 3000$ and my vet just popped her steroids... Read Less
