I did not have a good experience here with my pet. She was very sick and after doing tests and exams and tests, it all came back inconclusive. I know that can happen, but through the entire visit I didn't feel right about the place. I was EXTREMELY thankful that I called in the morning and they were able to get me in that day (because lets be honest, I thought she was quickly dying). They didn't get back to me like they were supposed to about her, and I had to keep calling them again and again. It certainly was a run-down place, which is no big deal, but the tech staff seemed absolutely clueless and I just didn't trust it. I never went back - there are too many places in Grand Rapids that I can go to instead of not trusting my vet.

We have been bringing our dog, Zoey, to Coit Animal Clinic for the past couple of years and we couldn't be happier. It isn't the fanciest place but that means they don't need to overcharge you for their services or try to convince you that you need something you don't. This is an attitude toward pet care that seems rare to find. The doctor and staff are also wonderful. They are very informative and answer all of your questions. Everyone is always friendly toward the animals and they try to make them as comforted as possible. They demonstrate obvious concern for the health of your animal and are honest (with no sugar coating) if they believe your pets lifestyle needs to change. When Zoey got a little older, she started putting on a little more weight, and the doctor stressed to us the importance of taking her for regular walks. When we let him know that we do, he said make them a little longer. I can see how some people would take this as rude, but I think he is an honest, no-nonsense kind of guy and I appreciate that.

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Phelps for years. He and the staff are great and the prices are fair and reasonable. Dr Phelps provides simple and realistic solutions for issues without trying to up sell ya. Example: my shepherd had to lose weight due his bad hips. Other than trying to sell me anything (expensive dog food or medicine) Dr Phelps suggested adding green beans and limit his food intake. The beans fill him up without any extra calories. I HIGHLY recommend Coit Animal Clinic, I won't take my pets anywhere else!!

Dr. Mike Phelps is amazing! We moved away for over ten years and when we came home, we knew that there was no other vet for us! He really cares about the pets he treats and their families. He saved our dog after she was hit by a car by doing emergency surgery and when she was at the emergency hospital, he even went up to check in her there. One of my cats had a lump on his face and I called because I was worried. After asking some pertinent questions, it was determined that it could be serious and he was able to see him that day and do surgery to remove it. I cannot say enough good about Dr. Phelps and the staff at Coit Animal Clinic!!

Dr. Phelps is a caring and skilled Vet and excellent surgeon. He and his staff are great. I have trusted him with all my pets - 6 cats and a dog, including 2 kitty limb amputations, over the past 15 years. My first cat lived another 8 years and adjusted very well! And she died of old age/stroke, not related to her cancer.
VERY reasonable fees and I have been to other clinics to compare. I do go online for certain meds in larger quantities.

I moved here a few months ago with my senior male cat. Today he went for his first visit to Coit Animal Clinic and I couldn't be more pleased with our experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. My William is a big boy and when they saw me carrying him in, one of the nurses opened and held the door for me, and held it again for me as we were leaving! That was so thoughtful, since I've had two neck surgeries and I'm not very strong. The vet was very kind and thorough. I feel very confident in having him take care of Will and I think I will take him back soon to get a microchip implanted.

I will NEVER take my dogs back to this vet. They don't ever seem to have appointment openings that aren't scheduled at least a month out and if it's an emergency, the staff doesn't seem the least bit interested in trying to work around their schedule to help you. The appointments are short and the bill you walk out of there is high. It's a very small (run down looking) vet and the only pro is that it is close to my house. They weren't there when I needed them. They didn't even bother trying to help me when I called needing an appointment (since they're my home vet) because my dog has a mass cell tumor. They told me that I'd have to wait and see what they have available for next week and they couldn't even promise that. Well, my dog might be dead by then. Thanks anyway. I was able to get in somewhere else and she has surgery booked for tomorrow!

Best place for your animal lovies! Dr. Phelps really cares about your pet and is always fair when it comes to the bill. Yesterday, my lil chorkie found one of my Zolofts that fell on the floor and was in a state that was very scary. Coit Animal Clinic went above and beyond, he actually took my sweet pup home with him to make sure he was okay over the night. This is not the first time he has helped in an emergency. I know my dog was sick, but to be a dr for so many years plus his so called lab staff needing more samples. Should have been done right the first time. Yes he was willing to cover the expense the second time. By that time came my family member wasn't the same. Time wasted for I believe was a Stupid error on his part. Oh, did I mention that he still charged me for the meds. If he was gonna cover the surgery the second time,which he got out of because of his error the first time,time wasted. This is the third vet I've tried in GR and I was hoping that, since they are only about 3 blocks from my house, it would be the last. I brought my cat here for a teeth cleaning since she is ten years old, has never had one, and my last vet said it was needed. The reason I didn't do this at the previous vet is because my cat doesn't have the rabies vaccine that their office requires and, with a ten year old indoor cat, I don't really want to do it. So I chose to have the procedure done at Coit because the vaccine isn't required with them for a cleaning.The vet tech was a little dismissive with me, and the vet was pretty gruff. Didn't look me in the eye once, didn't ask many questions about Smudge, and I just didn't get a very...warm, friendly vibe from him. I get the feeling that he's just gruff by nature and not unfriendly, but when I am bringing my pet there for the first time, I'd like to have a better first impression of my vet. I will probably keep looking...or just bring her back to the place I was going previously.

I went here for 5 years with my Jack Russell/Terrier mix. Appointments were short and always got the same response from the vet. My dog always limped on her left leg and she was always "fine". I finally left and the new vet immediately noticed her joint structure was changing and she had muscle atrophy surrounding the joint. I paid for 3 visits to Coit for nothing and the first visit at the new vet they began revealing the real issues. She was suffering from some form of polyarthritis and it had gotten to the point she couldn't stand! The new vet is the same price but the appointments last 45 mins to an hour and I leave with no unanswered questions. But Phelps saw nothing wrong... just a limp that needed anti-inflammatory. I would not recommend this vet to anyone who truly cares about their pets health and longevity. Had we switched vets sooner my dogs wrist may not have seen the damage it has.

The staff is always friendly, Dr Phelps takes the time to talk to you about all your options and is just a great down to earth guy. First off, the whole building smelled like piss. I understand this is a small vet but really? Maintain your facilities.Second, the nurse that checked us in made it seem like we were an inconvenience to her and she did not seem happy about being there. She was rude and unpleasant and did not acknowledge my dog barely at all. Third, the doctor was a complete d***. He was extremely rude and talked to me like I was an idiot. And from the moment he walked into the room, my dog went crazy. He has NEVER done that with any previous vets. EVER, and he is four years old. My dog was so uneasy with this guy. Overall, don't waste your money. I was EXTREMELY disappointed, especially since I read all the reviews and wanted to take my dog somewhere nice. These people are unpleasant and don't seem very happy about their place of employment. When I go to a vet I expect it to be clean and maintained as well as my dog and myself treated with respect and kindness. This place is NOT the place to go for that!!

We chose this clinic on a recommendation from a friend, and I've been very happy with their service. This is a one Doctor operation with a very nice staff, efficient service, and extremely fair prices. I was shocked when they examined our cat, diagnosed his bladder infection, and prescribed 2 types of medication for only $64! I would have paid 2-3 times that at my former vet. Also, they maintain "emergency" time slots. When we called our cat had blood in his urine. They were booked up for weeks, but they were able to squeeze me at 8 am before regular office hours to take care of him quickly. Overall, a great experience. I'm so glad we finally found a decent vet!

So far, I'm giving this 4 stars because I haven't ACTUALLY been yet. You see, I was NOT expecting to be needing a vet anytime soon. My students knew that my beloved cat, Chang, had passed away in December. When I came back to sub last week, one of my students brought me a kitten. I'm going to teach English in France in the fall, then moving to California with my boyfriend when I get back. So, at first, there was no way I was keeping her. Then, I was going to find her a good home. Then I was completely attached. My boyfriend and I decided she would be our first pet together. I named her Ripley, after the most amazing CT and Ripley from Alien because she will undoubtedly be a badass. I have been calling around asking about booster shots, and Nancy at Coit Animal Clinic was the most personable person I spoke with. She was very nice and informative. I didn't feel like she was rushing to finish the call like at some of the other places. I made an appointment for Ripley, and I'll be updating this soon.

I did not have a good experience here with my pet. She was very sick and after doing tests and exams and tests, it all came back inconclusive. I know that can happen, but through the entire visit I didn't feel right about the place. I was EXTREMELY thankful that I called in the morning and they were able to get me in that day (because lets be honest, I thought she was quickly dying). They didn't get back to me like they were supposed to about her, and I had to keep calling them again and again. It certainly was a run-down place, which is no big deal, but the tech staff seemed absolutely clueless and I just didn't trust it. I never went back - there are too many places in Grand Rapids that I can go to instead of not trusting my vet.

We have been bringing our dog, Zoey, to Coit Animal Clinic for the past couple of years and we couldn't be happier. It isn't the fanciest place but that means they don't need to overcharge you for their services or try to convince you that you need something you don't. This is an attitude toward pet care that seems rare to find. The doctor and staff are also wonderful. They are very informative and answer all of your questions. Everyone is always friendly toward the animals and they try to make them as comforted as possible. They demonstrate obvious concern for the health of your animal and are honest (with no sugar coating) if they believe your pets lifestyle needs to change. When Zoey got a little older, she started putting on a little more weight, and the doctor stressed to us the importance of taking her for regular walks. When we let him know that we do, he said make them a little longer. I can see how some people would take this as rude, but I think he is an honest, no-nonsense kind of guy and I appreciate that.

Dr Phelps provides simple and realistic solutions for issues without trying to up sell ya. Example: my shepherd had to lose weight due his bad hips. Other than trying to sell me anything (expensive dog food or medicine) Dr Phelps suggested adding green beans and limit his food intake. The beans fill him up without any extra calories. I HIGHLY recommend Coit Animal Clinic, I won't take my pets anywhere else!!

Dr. Mike Phelps is amazing! We moved away for over ten years and when we came home, we knew that there was no other vet for us! He really cares about the pets he treats and their families. He saved our dog after she was hit by a car by doing emergency surgery and when she was at the emergency hospital, he even went up to check in her there. One of my cats had a lump on his face and I called because I was worried. After asking some pertinent questions, it was determined that it could be serious and he was able to see him that day and do surgery to remove it. I cannot say enough good about Dr. Phelps and the staff at Coit Animal Clinic!!

I have trusted him with all my pets - 6 cats and a dog, including 2 kitty limb amputations, over the past 15 years. My first cat lived another 8 years and adjusted very well! And she died of old age/stroke, not related to her cancer.
VERY reasonable fees and I have been to other clinics to compare. I do go online for certain meds in larger quantities.

I moved here a few months ago with my senior male cat. Today he went for his first visit to Coit Animal Clinic and I couldn't be more pleased with our experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. My William is a big boy and when they saw me carrying him in, one of the nurses opened and held the door for me, and held it again for me as we were leaving! That was so thoughtful, since I've had two neck surgeries and I'm not very strong. The vet was very kind and thorough. I feel very confident in having him take care of Will and I think I will take him back soon to get a microchip implanted.

I will NEVER take my dogs back to this vet. They don't ever seem to have appointment openings that aren't scheduled at least a month out and if it's an emergency, the staff doesn't seem the least bit interested in trying to work around their schedule to help you. The appointments are short and the bill you walk out of there is high. It's a very small (run down looking) vet and the only pro is that it is close to my house. They weren't there when I needed them. They didn't even bother trying to help me when I called needing an appointment (since they're my home vet) because my dog has a mass cell tumor. They told me that I'd have to wait and see what they have available for next week and they couldn't even promise that. Well, my dog might be dead by then. Thanks anyway. I was able to get in somewhere else and she has surgery booked for tomorrow!

Yesterday, my lil chorkie found one of my Zolofts that fell on the floor and was in a state that was very scary. Coit Animal Clinic went above and beyond, he actually took my sweet pup home with him to make sure he was okay over the night. This is not the first time he has helped in an emergency. Yes he was willing to cover the expense the second time. By that time came my family member wasn't the same. Time wasted for I believe was a Stupid error on his part. Oh, did I mention that he still charged me for the meds. If he was gonna cover the surgery the second time,which he got out of because of his error the first time,time wasted. This is the third vet I've tried in GR and I was hoping that, since they are only about 3 blocks from my house, it would be the last. I brought my cat here for a teeth cleaning since she is ten years old, has never had one, and my last vet said it was needed. The reason I didn't do this at the previous vet is because my cat doesn't have the rabies vaccine that their office requires and, with a ten year old indoor cat, I don't really want to do it. So I chose to have the procedure done at Coit because the vaccine isn't required with them for a cleaning.The vet tech was a little dismissive with me, and the vet was pretty gruff. Didn't look me in the eye once, didn't ask many questions about Smudge, and I just didn't get a very...warm, friendly vibe from him. I get the feeling that he's just gruff by nature and not unfriendly, but when I am bringing my pet there for the first time, I'd like to have a better first impression of my vet. I will probably keep looking...or just bring her back to the place I was going previously.

I went here for 5 years with my Jack Russell/Terrier mix. Appointments were short and always got the same response from the vet. My dog always limped on her left leg and she was always "fine". I finally left and the new vet immediately noticed her joint structure was changing and she had muscle atrophy surrounding the joint. I paid for 3 visits to Coit for nothing and the first visit at the new vet they began revealing the real issues. She was suffering from some form of polyarthritis and it had gotten to the point she couldn't stand! The new vet is the same price but the appointments last 45 mins to an hour and I leave with no unanswered questions. But Phelps saw nothing wrong... just a limp that needed anti-inflammatory. I would not recommend this vet to anyone who truly cares about their pets health and longevity. Had we switched vets sooner my dogs wrist may not have seen the damage it has.

First off, the whole building smelled like piss. I understand this is a small vet but really? Maintain your facilities.Second, the nurse that checked us in made it seem like we were an inconvenience to her and she did not seem happy about being there. She was rude and unpleasant and did not acknowledge my dog barely at all. Third, the doctor was a complete d***. He was extremely rude and talked to me like I was an idiot. And from the moment he walked into the room, my dog went crazy. He has NEVER done that with any previous vets. EVER, and he is four years old. My dog was so uneasy with this guy. Overall, don't waste your money. I was EXTREMELY disappointed, especially since I read all the reviews and wanted to take my dog somewhere nice. These people are unpleasant and don't seem very happy about their place of employment. When I go to a vet I expect it to be clean and maintained as well as my dog and myself treated with respect and kindness. This place is NOT the place to go for that!!

We chose this clinic on a recommendation from a friend, and I've been very happy with their service. This is a one Doctor operation with a very nice staff, efficient service, and extremely fair prices. I was shocked when they examined our cat, diagnosed his bladder infection, and prescribed 2 types of medication for only $64! I would have paid 2-3 times that at my former vet. Also, they maintain "emergency" time slots. When we called our cat had blood in his urine. They were booked up for weeks, but they were able to squeeze me at 8 am before regular office hours to take care of him quickly. Overall, a great experience. I'm so glad we finally found a decent vet!

So far, I'm giving this 4 stars because I haven't ACTUALLY been yet. You see, I was NOT expecting to be needing a vet anytime soon. My students knew that my beloved cat, Chang, had passed away in December. When I came back to sub last week, one of my students brought me a kitten. I'm going to teach English in France in the fall, then moving to California with my boyfriend when I get back. So, at first, there was no way I was keeping her. Then, I was going to find her a good home. Then I was completely attached. My boyfriend and I decided she would be our first pet together. I named her Ripley, after the most amazing CT and Ripley from Alien because she will undoubtedly be a badass. I have been calling around asking about booster shots, and Nancy at Coit Animal Clinic was the most personable person I spoke with. She was very nice and informative. I didn't feel like she was rushing to finish the call like at some of the other places. I made an appointment for Ripley, and I'll be updating this soon.
