I had two cats that were patients of Dr. Fried.  After ten years of dealing with the male urinating outside of his litter box, I just couldn't take it anymore.  I contacted Dr. Fried with the intent of humanely euthanizing him because I thought it was better than subjecting him to an adoption where he would have to get used to new surroundings and perhaps be mistreated.  She suggested I try crating him for a few weeks but I thought that would be really hard on him as well.  He wouldn't understand and he was a very affectionate cat, always wanting to be around people.  Dr. Fried knew what a difficult decision this was for me and responded compassionately, agreeing to come to the house so he would not be traumatized by a car ride in his final hour.  She arrived at the house as scheduled, prepared to move as quickly or slowly as I directed.  But I was really conflicted about putting down a healthy animal and when I expressed that, Dr. Fried immediately offered an alternative.  She took my cat to her clinic where she kept him crated for two and a half weeks.  When she returned him to me, he was the same cat - still affectionate, well-nourished, clean, etc. The only difference was that he NEVER went outside of the litter box again.  NEVER!My animals are family members that speak a language I don't always understand.  But Dr. Fried does.  Her understanding of behavioral issues as well as medical issues enables her to treat the whole animal in a way that comforts the human along with the animal.  And, she is both practical and conservative.  Whenever there is a question as to how to proceed, I ask her, "What would you do if was your animal?"  She answers and that's what I do.  So far so good. I have been using Dr. Fried for about 3 years since I adopted my dog, Peanut.  He is a 50 pound mutt that means the world to me, she has cared for him his whole life. What I like most about Dr. Fried is that she is very practical as well as attentive.  Peanut goes to daycare maybe 3-4 times a month and at any point if he even LOOKS like he may cough I immediately call the vet and see what I should do. Frequently I am told that I should do NOTHING, and if he ACTUALLY starts to cough, I can give him this specific child's cough medicine that he seems to like. And other times if it seems like he needs attention or if the medicine doesn't work, she'll ask me to bring him in.  He LOVES going to the vet, they've got a little fenced in yard in the back that he can play in if we've got to wait a while and they have a few cats that live at the clinic that peanut likes to bark at .   Some times she'll just look at peanut and decide he's fine and we go home, other times she's needed to draw blood or take an X-ray, the X-ray is obviously done in another room but the blood draw is usually in front of us. She brings in another person and one person holds the paw and Dr. Fried draws the blood, I like to hold my dogs head but if I didn't I'm sure she'd just get someone else in there. It's quick and with just a little poke, my dog never cries or yelps! And I love that she tells him he's a good boy, like I would, it's really a good predictor of what I'm sure happens when you have to leave your animal over night or something. Recently peanut had a coughing problem and X-rays were taken and it was discovered he had some sort of dormant version of bronchitis that flared up every once in a while, she put him on a schedule of steroids that started strong and then weened him off slowly. It made his cough go away COMPLETELY, he didn't have ANY side effects and no weight gain either. She tells me the dog is fine when he is and fixes him when he's not, I'd never go anywhere else.
