Please read recent reviews of Donaldson Animal Hospital before taking your pet(s) there. I just had a “horrific” experience there on Monday, 10/9/23. I wish I had read recent reviews before making my appointment. On Monday, 10/9/23, I made the decision to put my 19 ½ year old Tonkinese cat down because she was in a deep decline that accelerated over the prior weekend. My vet of choice is closed on Mondays and I did not want to defer putting my cat down another day. I had been to Donaldson Animal Hospital many years ago and wound-up discontinuing going there because of another bad experience. But, in desperation, after many years I decided to see if they had an opening to euthanize my cat; and they did at 4:30. On the phone, they took a $55 deposit, which I thought was odd, but provided payment information. The woman on the phone assured me that the entire cost to euthanize my cat and provide a group cremation would be $185.
I arrived for my appointment and explained the situation to Dr. Corey Hoonhout. He knew I was clearly distraught because I was crying as I spoke to him. Dr. Hoonhout stated that I would not be able to hold my cat while he put her down “because he isn’t comfortable doing in that way.” He explained that he would take my cat to the back, sedate her, and then bring me back while he euthanized her. After taking my cat, a woman came in to collect payment, which was $55 more than quoted on the phone. I explained this to the woman, who left the room to get Dr. Hoonhout. Dr. Hoonhout returned to say that the way he puts animals down requires the additional $55; and got very defensive when asked why I wasn’t told this on the phone.
Dr. Hoonhout left the exam room and returned a bit later stating that he will not be euthanizing my cat. I handed him my credit card stating that I was willing to pay the additional amount. I knew we were nearing 5:00 and did not want to bring my cat home for another night because I knew there was a potential to get into an emergency situation during the night. Additionally, my children and mom had already said their good byes to our cat throughout the day. I was mentally prepared to put her down.
I was so distraught at this point that I was visibly shaking and could barely speak. Dr. Hoonhout returned with my cat and upon entering the exam room, proceeded to drop her to the floor from chest height. My cat did not land on her feet, as she was too old and sick. She landed with a thump and I still can’t get that visual out of my mind. Dr. Hoonhout did not so much as apologize. He did not examine my cat to see if he had done damage. Rather, he put my cat back in her carrier, stating, “She’s fine.” I asked him if he was some sort of twisted doctor who got pleasure out of torturing animals and their owners.
I left the clinic at that time because I was so upset. I left my cat behind and went to my car to see if I could find a place that would euthanize her after hours. I came back in to retrieve my cat; and I would up taking my cat to Animal Emergency Center on Auburn Road in Rochester Hills. The staff there were kind and compassionate. They also charge less money to euthanize an animal. And the best part was that I got to hold my cat during the entire procedure. I am just so sorry my cat had to encounter Dr. Corey Hoonhout on her last day of life. I hope I can save others from having to deal with a vet who clearly could care less about animals and their humans. Read Less
