Been bringing my dog here since we first got him, 4 years now. The vet was thorough with the exam and gentle with him. He was typically terrified of course but both the Doctor and the assistant worked well together and did a fine job. My dog was handled with the care I expected. The vet herself and the staff I encountered are not really what I would call people persons, they are better with animals. That's ok with me. I don't need them to be overly friendly with me. They treated my pet well, so I will continue to take him there. Someone else mentioned in their review that the vet was condescending...yeah I get that. Like I said, she was good to my dog so I got over it. They are more affordable too.

I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT GO HERE!! This place is a butcher shop.. Sure, It might be cheaper than everywhere else, but so not worth it. You get what you pay for. I've had cats for all of my 37 years and NEVER have I had a worse experience with a vet office.
I took my two kitties to get neutered today and what a nightmare. First off, my boyfriend and I offered to carry the crate to the back room for the receptionist bc she was an older lady and the crate was quite heavy. Big mistake, the place is FILTHY! Not a sterile environment, at all. Food everywhere, dirty dishes mixed with operating tools, it was disgusting. I should have taken my cats & ran for the hills at that point, like I wanted too, but I didn't. :( They then call me about 45min later to say that my cats are done & ready to be picked up. I had ran a few errands, so it took me about 30min to get back. I walk in & the crate is just sitting in the middle of the waiting area with a room full of patients (all with dogs) I mean come the F*ck on.. my cats just went through surgery, like they need to have the shit scared out of them the second they open their eyes. So weird.. And now for the fun part... As I'm paying I ask the woman a few post op. general questions "whats the recovery for the kitties" "will they need to be in cones" etc.. She was so rude, full on dismissed me and said, word for word "They're recovered" that was her answer to every question i asked "They're recovered" Wouldn't even look up from the file she was holding. I get the cats home, after our 45min drive and within 15 minutes one of their sutures opened and part of his scrotum was spilling out of the incision. needless to say, I had to put him back into the crate and take him back to the vet. At this point, I'm pissed but more so worried about my little dude. I get back to the vet, they again could not be MORE RUDE, to where at one point one of the vet tech's called me a bitch because I was asking if I could speak with the Dr before he goes back into surgery. This place really is such a joke. Never in my life have I experienced such terrible service. What makes it so much worse is that they are dealing with peoples pets who are more like our children than pets. It makes me super sad for them, especially Nicole (with an N) Wolf, the one who called me a Bitch for no reason, at all. How professional. She didn't seem to have any compassion towards animals at all & just has a horrible attitude.
If you've made it this far, sorry for the long review. This is my 1st review, EVER, for anything.. Thats how downright awful this place is. I can't stress enough, don't go here. It's not worth saving the 50 bucks. You'll regret it and your pets will be worse off for it. This place needs to be shut down!

Furthermore, if you need more of a reason to stay away, they're cold and uncompassionate towards your animals, my small dog especially. They're rough with your pets, not to mention unnecessarily condescending towards you personally and your life. My dog is 2lbs overweight and the doctor was almost laughing as she told me my dog would die from back issues. Excuse me? (((I'm sorry it's been over 100 degrees and she's small, I'd rather her not die from a walk during a heat wave.))) I wouldn't mind the constructive criticism if it was given with maturity, but come on, condescendingly??? Lol... Pathetic.
That appointment left me in tears and my dogs traumatized. Goodbye!!!

Both female doctors are pretty well-read. Dr. Yates much nicer than the other. The facility is fair priced I believe that's why most people go there. But the receptionist and most of the staff just plain rude. Passive-aggressive. In my opinion not worth the prices. Be prepared to feel like they have a weird grudge against you the first time you meet them. 3 stars because they care about the animals. Three stars because they do not care about people very much.

We went to this vet office for many years. They were usually professional and affordable but never friendly or nice. The doctors never introduced themselves at any point in the entire time we went there. When I had to put our cat down we went there and received such cold, insensitive treatment, I still have terrific guilt about it. A little more sensitivity and kindness could go a long way especially when dealing with such difficult situations.

I will never go back. I was told to crush a TheoDur pill and give it to my dog with peanut butter. Shortly thereafter, my dog started sweating and getting clammy. By 2:00 in the morning he had had a stroke and I was at the ER putting him to sleep. I did not know at that time TheoDur was caffeine and a slow release medication and should not have been crushed. Devastated.

Now for the unacceptable, the front staff...my observation in the past 7 years is that this is an alternate universe filled with the most unhappy, unkind and downright rudest humans you will encounter in a place that cares for your loved ones. No joke! Please, visit here just to see how comical it is! The woman today is new, Nicole, and fits right in. Now, Salem Vet has had this reputation for years, it's nothing new, we all know it and you would think Dr. Yates and Dr. C would know this unsightly reputation and hire someone with a heart--NOPE. But, for some reason, this is the content of character they go for so for those who are reading these reviews, my experience with Dr. Yates is exemplary, we love her. The staff...well...it's your call. But you will FEEL the negative energy immediately. You've been warned.

Apparently the doctor's are aware with the front of the house. If you're looking for great customer service, don't go here. If your looking for a good vet at great prices, this is the place for you.

Sadly I cannot recommend this clinic any longer. After over 25 years I will never return. I am tired of being treated disrespectfully and having my animals quiver with fright. The medical care has always been accurate and inexpensive, but the rude staff, lack of compassion, complete lack of people skills and dirty crowded building are too much. When I leave the vets office in tears something is definitely wrong.

This is the only place I will ever take my dogs. Dr. Cavender is the BEST!! She is truly there for the animals.. I've had guinea pigs, bunnies and now dogs.. she has treated them all. I can't say enough good things about her and her staff... just like a small town vet..we even got my parents to switch vets after 20 years..their dog had cancer and Dr.C came in on the 4th of July to treat her..and did not charge extra for this.. saved them a ton of money not going to the emergency vet.. she is always doing things like that..which makes her stand out from the others.. I could go on and on about all that she has done for my animsls.. but you would be reading pages.

I knew before going to this clinic that the technician/receptionist was going to be unfriendly because she was like that over the phone. She vacillated between somewhat friendly and rude and condescending. I thought, "The Dr. is bound to be better". No chance. No welcome smile, no hello. I can say I think the dog had good care but they are desperately in need of some social skills. I took a dog in that wasn't my own, I was dog sitting. The tech and the Dr. just huddled together, leaving me totally out of what they were doing, as Lucky yelped in pain. She said the dog was a woos, because no other dogs cry when they're getting a shot. She tried to teach me how to hold the needle but I had trouble. She got very impatient with me until I told her not be mad at me, I was new to this. Magically, a veil lifted from the Doctor's and tech's eyes and they were as friendly as could be. Probably realized, "Oh, oh. it's review time". The office was shabby and if you can overlook the nastiness, you might be okay there. I don't know about prices because the owner paid for everything. I would never take a pet there

My cat puked up a worm this morning and I simply needed some medication. I went to the Salem Vet based on a recommendation from a friend, and was surprised at how rude the staff was. This was my first time here after moving back from Tennessee, and was told they rarely accept walk ins and I would need to make an appointment, and I was told the earliest available appt was over a week away. They didn't even let me speak as to what the issue was, I just needed a simple medication to take care of worms, something which shouldn't have to wait over a week, but they wouldn't listen. They said most vets don't take walkins...huh? I went to the Vet in downtown Plymouth and they told me that most vets do take walk ins, and were very friendly and I was in and out in under 20 minutes. I will be bringing my cats here in the future, and advise others in the area to do so as well.I was suprised to see others here comment on the rudeness, it's a shame, as I grew up in Salem and would have loved to support a local business.

Just yesterday, an hour and a half after they closed, they answered the phone and waited the 45 minutes it took us to drive there to help our Great Dane! We are so happy we found them 8 years ago! This is the best place for animal care that I have ever been to hands down. I cannot say enough about both Veterinarians. The first time I went there was because my current vet at the time was completely over charging me for something I knew they were misdiagnosing. My friend said Salem was worth the drive so I called them. The vet nailed the problem which wasn't good, then their compassion blew me away. Since then I admit that I looked for someone closer since it is over an hour drive, but I could not find anyone that gave the same quality of care. They explain everything and they love the animals. OH, and they are HONEST and never do something that doesn't need to be done. I love them and will never switch again. On the negative side, more and more people are figuring this out and they are very busy. I feel so blessed to have them caring for my pets.

These people know what they're talking about! It's a country style vet and animals are their lives. The vets aren't as good with communicating with the owners as the pets though. They seem a little rude at times but if you can over look that the service they provide your animals is outstanding. Prices are extremely reasonable, you'll never want to go to a city vet again. I make a 40 minute drive just to go here!

This is about the 5th vet I have used in my life time, and I wish I had found them sooner. Warm, Compassionate, Caring, Down to Earth pet care. Will not "gouge" you with tests and items you do not need. Even when I asked about expensive procedures I had done in the past, they told me that if there is not a reason to preform them, they do not need to do them. I am so very happy with them. They are truly the BEST Vet Clinic around!Deborah

I did a lot of looking around for a vet to do my rescue dogs spay, and was recommended here. I’m very pleased with the outcome! I drove 30 minutes and do not regret it. Good price and good doctor. I will be using them for the rest of my dogs life.

I will never go back. I was told to crush a TheoDur pill and give it to my dog with peanut butter. Shortly thereafter, my dog started sweating and getting clammy. By 2:00 in the morning he had had a stroke and I was at the ER putting him to sleep. I did not know at that time TheoDur was caffeine and a slow release medication and should not have been crushed. Devastated.

First, the good news, Dr. Yates is wonderful. My animals have always responded kindly to her and she is why we keep going back...that and the prices. Now for the unacceptable, the front staff...my observation in the past 7 years is that this is an alternate universe filled with the most unhappy, unkind and downright rudest humans you will encounter in a place that cares for your loved ones. No joke! Please, visit here just to see how comical it is! The woman today is new, Nicole, and fits right in. Now, Salem Vet has had this reputation for years, it's nothing new, we all know it and you would think Dr. Yates and Dr. C would know this unsightly reputation and hire someone with a heart--NOPE. But, for some reason, this is the content of character they go for so for those who are reading these reviews, my experience with Dr. Yates is exemplary, we love her. The staff...well...it's your call. But you will FEEL the negative energy immediately. You've been warned.

Sadly I cannot recommend this clinic any longer. After over 25 years I will never return. I am tired of being treated disrespectfully and having my animals quiver with fright. The medical care has always been accurate and inexpensive, but the rude staff, lack of compassion, complete lack of people skills and dirty crowded building are too much. When I leave the vets office in tears something is definitely wrong.

This is the only place I will ever take my dogs. Dr. Cavender is the BEST!! She is truly there for the animals.. I've had guinea pigs, bunnies and now dogs.. she has treated them all. I can't say enough good things about her and her staff... just like a small town vet..we even got my parents to switch vets after 20 years..their dog had cancer and Dr.C came in on the 4th of July to treat her..and did not charge extra for this.. saved them a ton of money not going to the emergency vet.. she is always doing things like that..which makes her stand out from the others.. I could go on and on about all that she has done for my animsls.. but you would be reading pages.

I knew before going to this clinic that the technician/receptionist was going to be unfriendly because she was like that over the phone. She vacillated between somewhat friendly and rude and condescending. I thought, "The Dr. is bound to be better". No chance. No welcome smile, no hello. I can say I think the dog had good care but they are desperately in need of some social skills. I took a dog in that wasn't my own, I was dog sitting. The tech and the Dr. just huddled together, leaving me totally out of what they were doing, as Lucky yelped in pain. She said the dog was a woos, because no other dogs cry when they're getting a shot. She tried to teach me how to hold the needle but I had trouble. She got very impatient with me until I told her not be mad at me, I was new to this. Magically, a veil lifted from the Doctor's and tech's eyes and they were as friendly as could be. Probably realized, "Oh, oh. it's review time". The office was shabby and if you can overlook the nastiness, you might be okay there. I don't know about prices because the owner paid for everything. I would never take a pet there

My cat puked up a worm this morning and I simply needed some medication. I went to the Salem Vet based on a recommendation from a friend, and was surprised at how rude the staff was. This was my first time here after moving back from Tennessee, and was told they rarely accept walk ins and I would need to make an appointment, and I was told the earliest available appt was over a week away. They didn't even let me speak as to what the issue was, I just needed a simple medication to take care of worms, something which shouldn't have to wait over a week, but they wouldn't listen. They said most vets don't take walkins...huh? I went to the Vet in downtown Plymouth and they told me that most vets do take walk ins, and were very friendly and I was in and out in under 20 minutes. I will be bringing my cats here in the future, and advise others in the area to do so as well.I was suprised to see others here comment on the rudeness, it's a shame, as I grew up in Salem and would have loved to support a local business.

Just yesterday, an hour and a half after they closed, they answered the phone and waited the 45 minutes it took us to drive there to help our Great Dane! We are so happy we found them 8 years ago! This is the best place for animal care that I have ever been to hands down. I cannot say enough about both Veterinarians. The first time I went there was because my current vet at the time was completely over charging me for something I knew they were misdiagnosing. My friend said Salem was worth the drive so I called them. The vet nailed the problem which wasn't good, then their compassion blew me away. Since then I admit that I looked for someone closer since it is over an hour drive, but I could not find anyone that gave the same quality of care. They explain everything and they love the animals. OH, and they are HONEST and never do something that doesn't need to be done. I love them and will never switch again. On the negative side, more and more people are figuring this out and they are very busy. I feel so blessed to have them caring for my pets.

There are many other vet business that treat you much better and value your business. The waiting area is cramped. You will also wait so bring a book.I wish I had read everyone else's reviews. Despite long waits and slightly rude treatment, they are the most knowledgeable and caring vets around. They truly care about the animals. Very cheap also

These people know what they're talking about! It's a country style vet and animals are their lives. The vets aren't as good with communicating with the owners as the pets though. They seem a little rude at times but if you can over look that the service they provide your animals is outstanding. Prices are extremely reasonable, you'll never want to go to a city vet again. I make a 40 minute drive just to go here!

This is about the 5th vet I have used in my life time, and I wish I had found them sooner. Warm, Compassionate, Caring, Down to Earth pet care. Will not "gouge" you with tests and items you do not need. Even when I asked about expensive procedures I had done in the past, they told me that if there is not a reason to preform them, they do not need to do them. I am so very happy with them. They are truly the BEST Vet Clinic around!Deborah
