We were very disappointed in the options we were given for our sweet boy Max who was severely backed up. Now first, I do want to say, the office staff, techs, etc were awesome! The doctor is who we weren't happy with.
Max suffers from perianal fistula so he is on prednisone alot...therefore he eats stuff he shouldn't, like half of a saltine cracker box. Our local vet could not help him since the doctor was out of the country for the holidays so we headed to Wilson Vet. The first trip there, they sent him home with pain meds and told us to give him Miralax every 12 hrs. They also gave him two enemas. 2 days later, he was miserable and still hadn't pooped. He was pitiful. My husband took him back to Wilson, and the doctor pretty much told us we had three options; send him home with meds in hopes that he passes all the poop, a $2000+ surgery to remove all the poop or euthanize him. Max is 5 yrs old and other than filled with poop, he was completely healthy. We were in shock. I called our vet and asked what other options there were. They told us he needed to be sedated, given an enema and then to manually go in and remove the poop. My husband relayed this to the doctor at Wilson Vet and she didn't want to do it. She didn't think it would be beneficial. My husband told her it's what we wanted to be done. He signed a waiver going against medical advice and they sedated Max, gloved up, used forceps and manually removed everything from Max. The doctor's whole demeanor changed when she let my husband know Max was all cleaned out. The fact that we were not given this option to begin with and had to go against medical advice in their eyes, and was either going to move forward with an expensive surgery he obviously didn't need or to euthanize him was unbelievable. $349 later, our boy got to come home! He is doing wonderful and as happy as he can be!
Make sure you advocate for your animals when you don't agree with the options you are given! If we hadnt, our situation could have turned out completely different. Read Less
