So I've had great experiences with the technicians here which ultimately made me decide to switch vet offices to this one. The only reason I even gave this place 3 stars is because of the technicians. They deserve 5 stars and the vet that I had to deal with deserves 0. I can't express how great all of the techs I have dealt with are. They are always friendly and incredibly helpful. I wish I could say the same about the actual veterinarian. I brought my dog in for his annual and had a couple concerns. He had a rash on his underside around his groin area, didn't seem to be bothering him too much but still was concerned. He also had a hard bump that was growing on his back that I wanted to address. My dog is 7 yrs old and a rescue. He drools a lot when he is excited or nervous. I was in the room the vet came in and he sat down not addressing my dog (no big deal, just everywhere else I have been they introduce themselves to my dog). My dog went up to him to sniff him like any dog and he got drool on his shoes and the vet actually said how gross that was. So this visit was already starting off on a terrible note. When I asked him about the rash...he just peeked his head under him and said he sees nothing so there's nothing he can do. Then he offered me antibiotics if that would make me feel better. I said I didn't want to give him antibiotics without knowing what the issue was. Then I pointed out the hard cyst like thing on his back. He touched it with a finger and said that he didn't know what it was but knew it wasn't a fatty tumor. Said it could be anything and he could take him in the back and put him under anesthesia and cut it off and send it in. Being put on the spot like that made me incredibly uncomfortable and with the lack of information or explanation I declined. When they took him out of the room to take his blood he was whining and I actually heard someone (which I believe was him because he was the only male I saw there) raise their voice at him...at that point I wanted to walk back there and grab my dog and leave.....I have lived in ypsi for 2 years and have taken him here to get his nails trimmed and called there when he was sprayed in the face by a skunk and they gave me advice. All the experiences I have had have been great...from the techs. With the exception of the techs I have never been so appalled by a vet ever...and again, my dog is 7. I would look somewhere else with a vet that actually cares about animals...or at least likes them. If you just have to go in for a simple visit like nail trimming or something of that nature that the technicians take care of...great place.... Read Less

They did everything in their power to help our little guy get back to healthy..and without nickel and diming us like most vet offices do. Most definitely making this our one and only vets office! My dogs are family to me and their health and well-being is my responsibility so, although I have to be mindful of my budget, I would never take them somewhere where I didn't trust the staff or thought they weren't getting the best care I could possibly give them. I'm by no means dismissing people's reviews because I know we all have different experiences but when I read some of them, I'm very surprised. I've been taking my animals here since 2012 and have only wonderful things to say about it. It does make me wonder if some of these reviews might be posted to the wrong animal hospital because my experiences over the past six years have been radically different. I first took my dachshund, Pete, there when he was about 10 months old because he got a hold of a decent amount of chocolate. Since I'd moved to Michigan less than a month prior, I just googled for a vet and happened to end up there. I called ahead and they said they could get me in immediately. While my ex-boyfriend drove, I read some reviews that weren't so great and was a bit worried to be honest but when I got there, they were great with my dog and I've never questioned going to another vet since. I have been to a lot of vets from southern Ohio where I'm from and, in spite of the fact that the cost of living here is SO much higher, the vet bills at this vet are significantly lower than similar routines cost my family at home. In the past 6 years, I've continued to take Peeta there and, after adopting an older dog who's now twelve, take both for nail trimmings, emergencies, etc. Even if it is just a nail trim, I almost always can get them in the day I call and they are always very flexible with times. Peeta has been there countless times for self-injury from trying to escape his crate when he had separation anxiety as a puppy. He also was there when he had a very bad illness and we thought he was going to die. They were very mindful of cost because I was a graduate student at the time but also did everything they needed to do to make sure he got better. In October 2017, he had a serious back injury. They checked him out and helped me weigh some options, to take him straight to Dogwood for a potentially $6,000 surgery or try some medications first to see if it was an acute injury. I felt very informed and, due to finances, took a chance and tried the medication first. I also had taken my 12 year old dog there months before. Initially, we thought she had a back injury too but they walked me through the same process and again, I tried medication and waited it out. It saved me a lot of money and when we saw her get better with treatment for arthritis, we were spared the costs of an MRI. I don't feel like this vet has ever taken advantage of my trust and, if anything, I feel more reassured when I'm worried about something and they check it out and tell me when I don't need any treatment. I rarely have long waits at this vet, a few times but it is an animal hospital and I recognize sometimes there might be emergencies of which I'm unaware. I'm always given estimates before I make a decision. While I'm very fortunate to be in a better financial place now, there were periods when my finances were more stretched and I did have to weigh some considerations when my dogs needed something unexpectedly. I never felt judged by this vet and, if anything, think at those times they were sensitive to my need to keep costs as low as I could without comprising my dogs' health. I noticed a few reviews voicing concerns that the vets pushed unnecessary services. While I can't say anything about their experiences because I wasn't there, I can say I've experienced entirely the opposite. For example, my dog was due for his dental cleaning, something that can run I think between 180-300 depending on extractions. I took him in for a routine visit and, while they could have just scheduled the dental cleaning I requested, they told me his teeth were in good enough shape that I could wait until they had a significant discount on dental cleanings if I wanted. I will never bring a pet here again. The Dr did not care about my dog only about money. My dog was examined and the Dr recommended a mass removal, dental cleaning and a fluoride treatment. Estimate was 800 to 1000. I agreed to schedule but Dr recommend X-rays, blood work, and vaccines before the surgery. I questioned the need for the vaccines since we didn't know if she had terminal issues yet. He said I had to have them for the hospital stay and that I had nothing to worry about. She would be fine. So the estimate for the pre surgery was 600 and I paid it and had the recommended items done. I took my sweet dog on vacation before her surgery and ended up at an emergency vet. My girl was bleeding from her mouth and had gone blind. The emergency vet said the mass in her mouth was so big that they did not recommend removing it because half of her face would need to be removed and the cancer had already spread to other areas. How did the Dr at Mich ave not see this or tell me this??? Why would you schedule a dental cleaning with a mass of this size?? I had to put my baby girl to sleep in Myrtle Beach. She came with me on vacation and is going home in a box. Shame on this Dr!!! Read Less

I had the Worst experience here!!! The initial visit was not bad. It was very emotional, since I found out my 12 year old Chihuahua has a heart murmur and fluid in her lungs. It was a lot to take in at once and I didn't feel much compassion. The vet tried to show me how to force my sick 5lb dog to take several pills. I'm glad I took it upon myself to find a less cruel way to do so. I was told I would get blood work results back the following day. I waited patiently and called towards the end of the day. They said they would not be in till the following morning. I anxiously waited till late afternoon then I called again. The vet got on the phone and said the lab never received the blood and that I would have to bring her back to draw more blood. I'm thinking seriously my dog with a heart condition that still doesn't feel well has to go through that again? I took her the next day and the vet wouldn't even come in the room. They sent another guy in who unfortunately was not being very helpful. I began to get so upset I had to leave. I couldn't believe I didn't receive at least an apology from ANYONE. I knew my emotions were high. I just spent $500 to a vet who has shown zero compassion. I understand they deal with a lot of sad situations and have to become somewhat immune to the emotions, but come on show at least a little. I hope I will be able to find another vet to help my pup, because my hopes for this place are very low. Read Less

Just had a wonderful experience. I am taking care of a friend's dog who had an upset stomach. They were able to get me in right away on short notice. The staff was incredibly kind and patient. The vet especially took pains to explain what was going on, what he recommended, and didn't pressure or judge. They gave me plenty of time to contact the owner and make a decision, and gave the dog some food on the house. I really like taking my three cats to Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital. The staff is wonderful and the doctors are amazing as well. They always treat myself and my family with respect and give lots of information and answer all my questions. I have never had a bad experience there and have been going consistently since 2012. Very happy with these people. Don't let the reception area, which is a bit dark, cold and plain scare you away. Their service more than makes up for it and brings my rating up to a full five stars. They are extremely helpful and are always trying to make it better/easier for you and your pet. I was impressed with that. After the examination of your pet they quickly had a print out of what they would recommend needs to be done. They explained every item listed and let you choose what you want and don't want and DON"T pressure you either way (liked that too). They even suggest ways to save money, like how on your first visit if you fill out the simple online form ahead of time you save. As a former business owner I was impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of the staff and Doctors with their can do attitude and getting right to it. Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital is a caring and professional facility. I have a 3 year old Wheaten/Poodle mix, Ripley (30+ lbs) and she comes regularly for wellness checks (tests, vaccinations, etc.) and emergency procedures (including an abdominal surgery). I have no complaints and appreciate their sensitivity and forthrightness. Michigan Ave Vet Techs are experienced and great with my dog and she has no fear of coming to the building. Ripley also gets groomed here and the groomer is great, she handles her with no problem, doesn't mind any fussiness by my dog about her paws and has no trouble keeping her calm. The first time I came here my cat Lilly had an emergency and had U.T.I. and they fixed her right up. The second time she was dropping pee and blood all over the apt and wanting me to constantly rub her lower back and crying so I assumed she had another U.T.I. and so they did an ultrasound and x ray and it turned out she had a severe infection in her uterus and it was filled with blood. She needed emergency surgery to the tune of $7000.00 all inclusive surgery and 7 day stay at the hospital. I would have paid any price and I told them that I did'nt care what the cost was but they had to save her life because she was my life and I needed her. Suffice to say they went beyond my expectations with their care of my little girl! I recently had my Yorkie... Sir. Rosco P. Coltrane 1'st and Lily both back in for their teeth cleaned and polished and they did a tremendous job with both of them! They treat your family members like their own and give them exceptional care snd treatment. Lily just got her shots today and has to come back on 2/24/2017 for her boosters. I would never trust my loves to anyone else but the Vet's and the staff here at the Ypsilanti Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital. They have more than earned my respect and gratitude for saving my Lily's life and taking care of Rosco like he is their family so Thank You! You guy's are the best!Read Less

Dr. Will has been great to us and our Yorkie Maltese. Yes, there is always a longer list of things recommended for your pet than what you expect going in (which does add up in terms of cost), but we've never felt pressured to do anything we didn't want to or tricked into getting something without knowing the cost. Dr. Will has always been very clear with us about the prices of the different vaccines and treatments. He answers our questions and is honest about what we should take care of now and what can be put off for awhile (for example, we were told our dog needs a dental exam "within the next couple years" but were not pressured into doing this expensive procedure ASAP). We've only been in for checkups and vaccines so far, and I have no complaints! Read Less

The staff was busy, which was understandable as it was a Saturday. However, the staff at the front desk carried on a personal conversation with one client for almost 15 min... while you have 6 or more clients waiting to check out is somewhat in efficient and sort of rude, as well as just not good customer service . As the staff took my dog back to draw blood, I could hear them yelling at my dog to sit. ..I didn't appreciate them yelling at him. He is trained and will sit on command or with a motion of hand. Also, being a new vet to me, I expected a break down in price for treatment and medications if needed. Which I requested when we checked in. That didn't happen and at check out a total of $300 was given. My dog had never been sick really, and medication for a bladder infection was $110 alone...I was blown away. I won't return.Read Less

Superb doctors and very caring and fun staff. I've had four pets under MAAH's care and we've been through urinary crystals, fatty tumors, dental cleanings and a sore hip. My pets are always handled gently and procedures are explained in as much detail as I want, which is usually a lot. We also use the grooming services and have been very pleased with how adorable our dog looks, and she obviously doesn't mind going so I'm confident that she's being well treated throughout her visit. Love going here. We have two cats and a dog and each time I feel like they are being taken care of. The front desk is always very accommodating especially in emergency situations and the vets definitely know what they are talking about (at least when I have been in). Gave 4/5 stars because the prices are a bit higher than other places, but it's worth every penny. They just redid their parking lot and it's much easier to park there. Read Less
