Foley Boulevard Animal Hospital

Coon Rapids, Minnesota
General Info

Foley Blvd. Animal Hospital was founded by Dr. Rodger Barr in January of 1981 as an 850 sq. ft. full service facility. The clinic was expanded to 2500 sq. ft. in 1986, at which time we went from two exam rooms to five exam rooms. Our most recent expansion/ total remodel was completed in September of 2012 and brought us to eight exam rooms. The new facility is State of the Art, and contains unique characteristics that exist in very few clinics in the U.S. Those innovative aspects include new technology LED lights throughout the facility, a back up natural gas powered generator that will kick in automatically if a power failure should occur, allowing all functions to operate as normal. The flooring in the treatment area, pharmacy, surgery, lab area, dental area, radiology and kennel area is a unique sprayed-on polyurea base over ½” felt, that allows for a more resilient cushy surface that will ease leg fatigue for employees. We have a dedicated Comfort Room for euthanasias as well as a quiet room for the very ill and their owners; this room has its own exit door, allowing owners the option to bypass the waiting room and maintain the privacy they deserve. The new Foley Blvd. Animal Hospital has digital radiology for dentistry as well as a full service digital radiology unit whose images will be projected into all exam rooms on our state of the art flat screen monitors. We have an upgraded in house Idexx lab that allows us to do most any chemistry or blood work on the spot and rapidly.

Foley Blvd. has always been associated with humane welfare groups, and supports the work that animal welfare groups provide. We are the main facility for Northern Lights Greyhound Adoption, and have been so since its inception in 1996. Our special focus on all pets, most notably sight hounds has led to an influx of all breeds of this category from far and wide to our facility. We think our level of compassion is extraordinary, and we show our love for pets through our excellent care and our willingness to support pets and owners who have fallen on hard times.

Our team is our greatest asset, and we are proud to have many team members who have worked for FBAH for well over 10 years, with five members exceeding 20 years. We believe our experience, compassion, and expertise goes a long way towards assuring the pet owner that their special companion will receive optimum care always.
Because our team of Veterinary Technicians/ Anesthetists has had extensive experience in the anesthesia of high risk patients (all sight hounds, as well as the very old and infirm) we feel our ability to manage your pet's surgical and anesthetic needs exceed the average Veterinary Hospital's capabilities. We are very proud of our results.
We are also associated with Board Certified Surgeons who come into our facility when a procedure exceeds our doctor’s level of expertise. The combination of our experienced Veterinary Technicians/ Anesthetists and top echelon Veterinary Surgeons, assures our surgical patients optimal results.

We leave no stone unturned when it comes to assessing a patient’s ability to undergo a surgical procedure. Standard presurgical blood tests are essential prior to any surgery.  We take no chances and we do whatever possible to avoid regrets; this is another reason why our results are exemplary.

Team
Education Rodger Barr graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1968. He received his B.S degree at the U of M. in 1972. He graduated from the U of M. College of Veterinary Medicine in 1975. He received the prestigious Upjohn Award for Proficiency in Veterinary Medicine, this award is given to the one senior small animal student who exemplifies excellence in the the small animal discipline, and is voted on by the professors and clinicians at the College. He completed an internship at Colorado State University from 1975-1976. After gaining experience at several small animal hospitals in Portland, Oregon and St. Paul, Mn., he started the Foley Blvd. Animal Hospital in 1981 with one employee, who still works at the clinic as Office Manager, Donna Barr. At Foley Blvd Animal Hospital Dr. Barr’s focus is on all pets canine and feline, with special interests in the sight hound breeds, with a long term emphasis on the Greyhound. Dr. Barr is proficient in a multitude of specialty surgeries including but not limited to perineal urethrostomies in cats, anal saculectomies, and extra capsular anterior cruciate repair, caesarian sections for whelping and queening dystocias, most soft tissue and some orthopedic procedures. Dr. Barr has also developed a special interest in reproduction, dealing with sterility, both male and female, as well as reproductive counseling. Dr. Barr has been associated with greyhound adoption since 1976; he was involved with the original greyhound retirement group, Regap. Was on the original Board of Directors of Greyhound Pets of America in the early ‘80’s, and in 1996 was involved in the establishment of Northern Lights Greyhound Adoption (NLGA). He became the first President of the organization in 1996, and remains the only President the organization has had. Dr. Barr became a member of the Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service Board of Directors in 2000 and except for one year off in 2007, has been on that board to this date in 2012. He is currently the President of the Board, and has been President since 2009. Dr. Barr’s greatest thrill in practice is maintaining quality of life for all the patients at Foley Blvd. Animal Hospital. His personal pride is maintaining an outstanding staff of team members who represent compassion that is unparalleled in Veterinary Medicine, as well as loyalty and longevity. He is of the opinion that the greatest asset any practice has is its staff. This is proven out by the fact that the Foley Blvd. Animal Hospital currently employs five team members who have been with the organization for over 20 years as of 2012, two who have been with the hospital for over 15 years, and five who have been affiliated with FBAH for over 10 years. An investment in experience and quality always pays dividends. Family Life And Outside Foley Blvd Animal Hospital Dr. Barr lives in Hudson, Wi. with his wife, four retired greyhounds, a gorgeous cat, a double yellow headed parrot and a lovely dove found in 1986. Dr. Barr’s hobbies include travel, reading, greyhounds, eating great food and grilling and barbequing on his BIG GREEN EGG.

My experience at Foley blvd animal hospital was the absolute worse experience of my life. Everybody from receptionists to the veterinarians were rude, disorganized and worse of all incompetent of their job. My experience started when my dog had a growth of tumors in her belly. The first veterinarian that examined my dog came to the conclusion before do any tests that the lumps were cancerous and recommended we might have to make a decision pretty soon. After a painstaking 50 minutes of tests we found the lumps were not cancerous but would need surgery to remove the lumps. So we set up an appointment for the surgery. Upon seeing my dog I had a notion that something wasn't right, there were still large lumps in her chest area and some fluid leaking from her stomach area, but what did I know I'm not an expert. Well 3 days later we had to bring my dog to the emergency room to correct all the things the Foley blvd veterinarian screwed up on. Such as leaking the infectious tumors through out my dogs body(it was very prominent in her chest area), not placing enough drainage tubes so that the infection could drain out, and placing the one tube they did put in, in the incorrect place. If we weren't to bring my dog into affiliated emergency veterinary clinic that day she would have died. Foley animal hospital constantly tried to nickle and dimed us for more and more unnecessary tests there after since we had to go back to get my dogs staples and tubes removed. And were very defensive and rude when explained all the extra surgery she had to go through. Bring your animals else wereRead Less

I definitely recommend them over some other places in the Coon Rapids area. We have been clients all through the upgrades to the building and the changes are really great. I would have preferred a separate waiting room for cats and dogs but the staff is really good about getting you into a private room rather quickly. If you prefer a certain vet you can request that in your record and you will only see that vet from now on. That was really a help to us since our pet did not like a particular vet for some reason. I just moved back from Chicago and had not yet found a vet.  My dog ran through a large patch of burrs and they were stuck in his hair all over his body including near his eye.  We called several vets in the area who could not take him.  Then we called Foley Blvd and we were at the office and seeing the vet within 15 minutes.  My understanding was the vet actually changed her schedule to see him.  We thought my dog would need anesthetic as he was snapping at us when we tried to get the burrs around his eye and he was scratching at it.  However, within 10 minutes Dr. Ault came out with my dog in her arms. He was burr free and wagging his tail!!!  The doctor was friendly and nice and took time to talk to us.  I could not have asked for better service.  The staff was friendly and attentive and my dog was happy. We had been taking our German Shepherd to a vet for a couple of months. They told us that she needed surgery for her knee. They told us it would have been $2400. A friend of ours referred us to Foley Animal Hospital telling us how great they were. We brought the xrays of her knee with us. When Dr. Barr came in after reviewing the xrays and feeling her leg, he told us right away that it wasn't her knee. He said that she had no arthritis in between the months of her xrays and no fluid on the knee. He asked if they checked her hips. I told them they did a physical check of them and they were fine. Dr. Barr did an xray of her hips and diagnosed her with hip dysplasia. You could totally see on the xray that they were bad. When our other vet was showing us her knee xrays, I didn't know what he was showing us, but I just assumed he knew what he was talking about. Dr. Barr gave us a list of options and suggested what he would do if it was his dog. She will be going throught 4 weeks of shots twice a week of Adequan. She got her first shot during that visit and has already shown great improvement. 4 days later she was running up the stairs which she hadn't done in months. She's a happier dog and much more active already. We have another German Shepherd and will be switching to this hospital for now on, even though it's a 40 minute drive. The people are so nice and knowledgable. Today she'll be getting her 2nd shot and I can't wait to see what changes those will make. Read Less

I would have preferred a separate waiting room for cats and dogs but the staff is really good about getting you into a private room rather quickly. Read Less
