We are very pleased with the care our sweet dog receives here. She is nervous about going to the vet and having blood drawn, but they were very kind, gentle and patient with her. She loves going in and seeing everyone and getting treats. I love that they didn't have an exam table for me to put her on. She wouldn't have liked that. She was more comfortable on the floor and it was nice to see them get down on the floor with her and examine her there where she could step away if she felt nervous and come back when she was feeling brave. We also received some good information about a vaccine that our last vet hadn't done, but needed to do. I love that they are offering mail order for prescriptions now too! I have absolutely loved my experiences at Lake Harriet Veterinary! I went there on a recommendation from a friend. My dog was throwing up bile all the time and I had no idea why, plus she had a small bump on her back that I assumed was a cyst but I wanted to get it looked at anyways. I'm a college student so money really matters to me, of course my dog matters more but it's a huge factor. The first time I went in, I agreed to doing all of the necessary tests. Once all the tests came back normal, we put my dog on a bland diet for a little and then I tried switching her back to normal food. She started puking again so I called and asked what was recommended. The vet remembered that money was important and instead of pushing for my dog to get an x-ray to see if anything was stuck, unlikely since I had been watching her so closely, she recommended that I switch her dog food to a sensitive solutions in case of allergies. She hasn't puked since and the vet saved me about $150! The bump was a harmless cyst as well, so all is good with my pup, my wallet, and most importantly my trust/relationship with my vet. I brought my cat in for a behavioral issue as well as a general exam with booster shot and blood test. I was able to move my appointment really easily (the behavioral issue had me move up the regular appointment by 2 weeks) and they understood when I had to move it again after not being able to get my cat in the carrier. The receptionist was completely adequate, but nothing to note. The vet tech was not friendly, but very professional. The real winner of the story was the vet. Nicole Palmieri was amazing. So kind and gentle with our very scared cat and you could tell she really cared about our new fur baby. We've had them take care of our two dogs for a few years now and they've always done a great job. They offer some holistic medicine options, which I don't really believe does anything, but some of you might. In regards to their vet skills, they've taken care of a fractured and infected tooth issue for Walter. We have been using LHV for the past 10 years. We mainly see Dr. Cathy Sinning but have also used the other doctors who have been great as well. They fit one of our dogs in for an emergency surgery a few years ago after a visit which is not easy to do and I was so thankful. When we needed to make an end-of-life decision a few years later, Dr. Cathy went out of her way to make that transition easier and fit us into her schedule when we only had an annual visit scheduled and ended up making that end-of-life decision that same day. I know I can trust their advice and I don't know what I would do without their experience and expertise. The best thing is I never have to wait and my appointment is either on time or early! vague and unorganized treatment plans with multiple charges for the same thing and an unacceptable range of fees ( estimate had a $600 range) not clearly outlined. this is my second dog I have taken here. My first dog was traumatized, I couldn't get her in the door for a subsequent visit and returned to our former vet. my current dog has been there for routine annual check-ups and all went fine but shakes terribly while there. needs some care now and things just didn't feel right. this place is convenient (walk to it) but decided to get a second opinion elsewhere and am so glad...complete different experience; my dog did not shake like at Lake Harriet. A detailed tx plan was presented and it was organized, reviewed by a surgical tech with her name on it for further questions, a follow-up welcome letter with online access to care, concerns, and information. This was the first time we visited the clinic with Roxy, my Yorkie Poo. Roxy is going strong at 13 y/o but we wanted an additional opinion about her teeth, a chronic cough and a small lump on her nipple which for a short time was draining. We have been taking our cats to Lake Harriet since Alta Vet closed years ago, and they are the best. In that time, they have provided care to 5 kitties ranging in age from less than a year (a rescue-turned-forever-ours who'd recently had kittens) to 21 years old. Dr. Nicole has been our primary vet, and has done a wonderful job not only putting the cats at ease (even the one who had serious behavioral/stress problems liked Dr. Nicole), but also explaining conditions and treatment options to us, answering our (at times copious) questions, and providing practical recommendations. She helped guide us through end-of-life care and decision making processes in a way that was sensitive and realistic, and displayed a good sense of humor with the kitties' more uncooperative and/or disgusting moments. :) Overall, the front desk staff, techs, and vets have been helpful, kind and focused on problem-solving. They have, when appropriate, suggested other resources, and in urgent situations, they have worked to get us in quickly to ensure proper care. I strongly recommend LHV. Read Less

This is the best decision we've made only second to adopting our two dogs. Being a first time dog parent I'm a helicopter mom to the max - all my fur-parents out there know that sinking feeling when you hear your dog whimpering down the hall or hear that vomiting sound at 2 am. Whether it's the wellness check every year or me coming in for a panicked visit, EVERYONE at this clinic has been professional, loving and sweet to my little furbabies and to myself. Expensive, predatory, and unethical - run away from LHV!LHV claims to provide a combination of holistic and traditional medicine, however in the time that we used them they provided no holistic recommendations for veterinary care. In fact, when we asked for advice on feeding a raw diet to one of our pets they suggested we look online and check out some books. Additionally, their services are overpriced when compared with their competitors.Perhaps the scariest thing of all is that this clinic does not obtain informed consent from the pet owner prior to performing tests and taking action. We went in to get updated vaccinations for our dog and instead they whisked her away, claiming to hear crackling in her lungs, and performed a slew of unnecessary and expensive tests, leaving us with an unexpected bill of $465, with no vaccines. This type of action is unethical and literally meets the definition of veterinary malpractice (i.e., not obtaining informed consent). When we asked for a credit or refund back afterwards they claimed that they were acting in our best interests and flat out refused. Even when we filed with the BBB they refused to provide us with resolution.We have since filed complaints with the MN Board of Veterinary Medicine and the MN Attorney General's office. At this point I don't even care so much about the money as much as I just don't want anyone else to fall victim to LHV's scummy, fraudulent, and predatory practices.Anyone considering LHV should run far, far away. Don't fall victim to their claims of providing holistic treatment. You're better off taking your pets nearly anywhere else. Read Less

Very friendly and upbeat staff but extremely incompetent. I have been taking my pet there for over 5 years and believed every diagnoses. When she broke her leg I brought her in and they suggested that I euthanize her. They said with having Cushings (all tests were negative but they still treated her for it. Was it for the cash?), with a tumor (a tumor that she had for 4 years and never grew nor was proven to be cancerous), and being 13 that I should kill her. They said my dog will never walk and that euthanasia would be the best for her. Thank God I decided to take her to the U of M where they found she does not have Cushings, the tumor was harmless, and she is happily walking down the block and enjoying life. Shame on them for being callous, uninformed, incompetent, and just wrong. They can administer shots and take care of a healthy pet but if your pet needs real care do not go here. Read Less

I am impressed with the staff at Lake Harriet Veterinary. I am not exactly "traditional" regarding my dogs' care, but I was surprised to be met with understanding and no questions. This is a big difference from many other vets that I have encountered, which is something that almost turned me off to visiting veterinary offices all together. I put a lot of care into my choices for my dogs, and as a professional in the canine world myself (dog trainer & dog walker), can be hesitant to hand my dogs over to people that I don't know. I immediately felt comfortable with the staff, and so did my dogs. We are new to the area, and after researching options, went with Lake Harriet- we had a great first visit and will return (though hopefully only for routine care!) I was traveling from out of town and was referred to this clinic.My dog has many issues that are helped by weekly acupuncture so I tried to schedule an appointment. The person answering the phone was not kind nor helpful and basically just said we can't help you without the hour long consult. I know that makes perfect sense for new clients, but we are just here for 10 days and would not be returning so I asked if they could ask a doctor if they could make an exception. I could tell this irritated her, and the experience went down hill from there. She showed no compassion for the situation and offered no help resolving the issue. This is vet is definitely very friendly; unfortunately, the quality of their veterinary care is quite marginal.This review is a stark opposite to all of all the reviews posted so far. The thing is that most pets are healthy, and most pet owners do not run into problems. A diligent and knowledgeable vet becomes necessary for the exceptions.We got a 6 weeks old puppy and brought and starting attending this vet for her care. Unfortunately, the care that we received leaves much to be desired. The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists (AAVP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend strategic deworming for puppies and kittens. This entails deworming at 2, 4, 6, & 8 weeks of age, then again at 12 & 16 weeks of age (cdc.gov/parasites/zoonot…). We started bringing our puppy for routine appointments when she was 6 weeks old. LHV did not conduct a single dewarming, until she got worms 7 weeks later.Our puppy also got a urinary tract infection (UTI). When we came to LHV for help, they tried testing free catch urine but ended up doing a skin swab, either of which tests can only confirm the absence of a UTI, and it cannot inform a treatment course. When the puppy still had the infection after 10 days of antibiotics, we finally realized that it was time to take her a different vet.This new vet tested the puppy and treated her with antibiotics, which remedied the problem. This new vet also immunized her puppy for all the things LHV missed. They also told us about the deworming recommendation from CDC. Ironically the new vet is also much cheaper.We learned that vets that provide a high caliber of care are AAHA certifeid (aaha.org/professional/de…). LHV is not. So, if you are looking for a friendly vet and your pet has no health issues, this vet is a great place. Read Less

I love these people!Yesterday, my girlfriend and I brought our puppy Cranberry to check out a possible irregular heartbeat, ask questions about her behavior, and, ugh, get her anal glands "expressed." (I shudder every time I think about it.)I had no expectations, since I've never visited a vet. Here's a list of reasons as to why I love this place:+The lobby area is open with a tall ceiling, and they provide some really awesome free treats for the pets and the owners. (I'll munch on my Starbursts while I sip on some tea. Thanks.)+The lobby to the appointment rooms are updated!+There's plenty of parking on the street outside. +The receptionists are super sweet.+You won't have to wait very long for your appointment. +The vet and nurse both provided excellent service to our pup. Both of them listened and acknowledged all of our concerns, noted different types of resources for various problems that we could access, gave us a sweet info packet, and, most importantly, treated our four-legged family member with so much love!+The nurses expressed Cranberry's glands with no problems!I am not even tempted to check out another clinic. Cooper is my first puppy, and this was his first trip to the vet, so I was a little nervous.  Overall I was very impressed!  Everyone was so kind and friendly. They told me up front what the cost would be when I made the appointment, so no surprises there.  Dr. Megan patiently answered all of our questions (we had a lot!) and the vet tech took the time to show us how to trim his nails.  Happy we chose this vet for our pup! One of the most unique aspects of the care here is that the vets offer some holistic & Chinese medicine perspectives upon request. We were given a print out of a few simple dietary changes to try for our dog & those tips have made a world of difference. They work with our pet insurance seamlessly & have made some stressful/unplanned appointments for our dog easier to endure.I recommended for my sister to bring her pup with a senstive-stomach over & she was equally impressed by the operation at Lake Harriet. Many reviews have already made it very clear - Lake Harriet Vet will take excellent care of your pet.  You should also know that they are great with your pet's ridiculously emotional and paranoid owner too.  Bringing Miles in for a teeth cleaning was horribly scary and I was beside myself with worry.  Not only had I read everything awful that can happen when cats are put under anthesia, but the thought of anything happening to my little guy was unbearable.  This might have been aggrevated by the fact that I was an emotional wreck anyways from dealing with the most stressful past 6 months ever.  So minutes after walking in the front door, the wheels came off and I was sobbing and slobbering all over the place as I tried feebly to check him in.  The receptionist quickly grabbed me tissues and took me into a room to finish the check in process, allowing me time to gather myself.  Doctor Nicole came in shortly and reassured me that Miles would be just fine.  She even assured me I wasn't the "crazy pet owner" after I apologized profusely for being such a wimp.  They could not have been more compassionate. And with that Miles was off.....His cleaning turned into a much longer surgery than expected since his teeth were so bad...this was his first vet visit since I got him 3 years ago.  They called me periodically to keep me posted and assure me that he was doing fine.  After 12 extractions and 5+ hours of surgery, he was finally done and ready to come home.His recovery was a little rocky as he struggled to get used to an empty mouth and 3 canines - which gives him this awesome Elvis snarl as the bottom up is free to push his upper lip up.  Do cat's even have lips??  Anyways, they were always great about answering my questions and getting us last minute check up appointments when needed.Highly recommend Lake Harriet Vet - for your pet care and minor breakdowns :) Read Less

I brought my 6.5 year old cat Tompkins in for his first visit to Lake Harriet Veterinary in August 2012, and I could not be happier--still! He was due for his Rabies vaccine, but he has always had issue with vomiting, so I decided to ask Dr. Palmieri--honestly, I expected her response to be the same as all the other vets. I have never been given much of an explanation, no suggestions have helped, and every other vet I've seen has recommended hundreds of dollars in tests.Dr. Palmieri immediately suggested B12 injections and a diet with a novel protein. She took her time to demonstrate how to give the injections and was very thorough in answering all of my (many) questions. Tompkins is not aggressive by any means, but he is very high strung at the vet and gets startled easily. The doctor and the tech moved very slowly and knew exactly what to do to ease my little guy's nerves.Four months later and Tompkins has only had one-two episodes of vomiting--down from 2-4 a WEEK. I live in St Paul and will not hesitate to return to Lake Harriet Vet & Dr. Palmieri. Best clinic, best doctors, and best service I've ever been to--and I worked at a clinic for 3 years. I stumbled across Lake Harriet Vet when I was doing research for holistic vets in the Twin Cities. I am so happy we selected them to be our vet - they've been absolutely great since the beginning.One experience I can share is that Lola got spayed and I sprung for acupuncture - within a day she was bouncing around and about 90%. We didn't drug her up and she didn't seem to be too much in pain.They have also been great at giving us tips on how to help the dogs using home/holistic/food products when I've called and had concerns, whether it was Jasper's sensitive stomach or Lola with a cold. It is nice to know they don't always "encourage" you to make an appointment unless they deem necessary. The receptionists, while not vets or techs, are well educated and will seek the answer if they don't know. It is pretty easy to get an appointment and I also have these cute ID cards and keytags that have proven to be helpful when I board or daycare my dogs. I switched to this place after considerable dissatisfaction with another clinic. Very happy with my decision. I was almost 30 minutes late for my first appointment and they were very understanding. Given my cat's (she's almost 20) degenerative kidney condition, they have been a tremendous source of support. Andrea and Robert at the front desk are friendly and warm. They get very busy so understand that sometimes your hold time may be long. The vet techs treat my cat with genuine affection. I picked Dr. Jim Sinning because he also practices acupuncture and Chinese medicine, both of which he has used for my cat with great effectiveness. He has never pushed anything on me, but brought up treatment options as needed. When lab tests have been done Dr. Sinning calls back the same day and either discusses results or answers questions unhurriedly, or leaves a very detailed message. I have had some major stuff done for my cat and they always inform me of the cost upfront. I am also pleased to be paying less for a lot of services compared to the last clinic in Minnetonka.
