Lyndale Animal Hospital

Minneapolis, Minnesota
General Info
Lyndale Animal Hospital was the first animal hospital built in Minneapolis. Built in 1936 as a stand alone vet clinic, Lyndale Animal Hospital maintains its charm and quaintness. The hospital ownership has only passed through the hands of two previous owners; both veterinarians that practiced within its walls until retirement.
In 2007, Dr. Daniel Grindle took over ownership of the practice. He strives to maintain the historic building, while keeping up with the changes in technology, and of course, continuing to practice compassionate veterinary care.
We offer services in general practice for cats and dogs including preventative health care, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, and radiology.

Call today and make an appointment for your cat or dog. Our staff will do it’s best to accommodate your schedule.

Very nice staff. I'd say the building needs a layout upgrade but it's obvious the pets happiness and health are the focus points not the layout. it's perfect for pets and petlovers!

I have had to visit here on two of the saddest days of my life. Being new in town, I felt strange going to a new office with new people for something so important to us. We had one Senior dog and a not-so-senior dog that had an aggressive form of cancer. But, I was only worried for a second. The entire staff at Lyndale Animal Hospital was so wonderful. I can honestly say that things went as well as they could. We had all of the time and comforts we needed during the last moments with our dogs. We were all treated with love, kindness and respect. We just got a new puppy and we had an awesome experience with the vet tech and the vet (Dr. Benson). The only problem is that whenever you call to schedule an appointment the front desk staff seems less than pleased about answering your call...I feel like I’m burdening them when I call to schedule or change an appointment. That’s the only down side of this place in my opinion. The facility is a little older but you can tell the techs and the vets really love what they do! Read Less

I had to put my dog down recently, in the process of this nobody came into the room to see what I would like to do with his body until after I put him down. Then they told me, I would be called in 5-7 business days, so I waited. The days have passed and I haven’t received a called so I called in and they told me that he was ready to be picked up. I've been coming here with my medium sized dog for seven years. They are friendly and give top quality care. I tried another vet for a while because they offered less expensive teeth cleaning--what a mistake! My dog ended up getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which we attended to for months... Only to find out he really never had the disease in the first place! Back to Lyndale, obviously, and here to stay. They may be slightly more expensive than other vets (although not outrageous), but it's worth every penny for their competence. Read Less

Slayer The Cat is writing this:Lyndale Animal Hospital was the second vet I ever went to but they were waaaaaaaaay nicer than the first, whom shall remain nameless. However. Before, I knew they would be nice, while I was in the car, and then for the teensy bit of time in the waiting room, I was in my carrier, freaking out, I'll admit it, absolutely howlin' mad, and I had to pee, but my people didn't listen and I was scared, so I peed. On my stuffed elephant. My girl put her American Girl Doll's "Princess" pillow in with me. I wish I had peed all over that instead. But the lady doctor and the other lady who gave me a shot, they didn't even get mad that I smelled up the whole place! Pretty righteous animal docs. And the lady doc said that I was "non-aggressive" and fine to go to the groomers, whatever that meant.Oh the next day, though, my lady had to get called to the groomers cuz this crazy girl was trying to shave me! What the what, I said? Oh hell to the no! I tore that shop up! The groomer had to call my mom because I was "misbehaving". What can I say? My name IS Slayer, hahaha. Read Less

This yelp review is brought to you by my cat Marlo. If he could write yelp reviews this is what he would say:First of all, I am always greeted by the most friendly and lovely office staff when we arrive in. They love every animal that comes in that door and they ask to hold us, because we are so cute! They even remember names when the "regulars" come in and they tell us all how much we have grown. They think every single one of the animals that walks in their door is amazing. One time even a doggie with a muzzle and some possible behavior issues came in and they still thought that doggie was the most perfect creature. They don't discriminate and they are so accepting of all animals that walk in.Next, you barely have to wait anytime at all for the doc to call you back. For real, I've been there 3 times and I have never waited more than 5-10 minutes in the waiting room (and thats only because my owner arrives 5-10 minutes early sometimes). They call you back and again tell you just how cute you are. It's a real confidence booster, I tell you. My human mother tells me how cute I am every day, but sometimes I think she is biased, so it is nice to hear it from someone else sometimes. The vet and vet techs love me. Even though I had plenty of parasites and critters living on me (because I lived outside for the first few weeks of my life), they never act squeamish around me and still hold and pet me. My human mom was really sad and scared when she first got me because taking care of a new kitty (and especially one with some "extra" stuff) was new to her, but the vets made her feel that everything was going to be okay by their calm and caring nature. They laid everything out for her pretty simply, straightforward, and answers her questions when she has them. The doctors and nurses don't make me sit up on the table, they let me explore the room and they even gave me some toys to take home on my first visit. After I got my shots they gave me treats, and helped me to eat them when I couldn't quite figure it out. I know that they see a lot of other pets, but they always remember me and they always remember what I talked about last time. They tell me they are going to miss me when I don't have to come back for awhile, and I think I will miss them too. Dr. Benson is awesome. She is kind, friendly and cares about me. She also is helping me to get better. She cleared out those pesky ear mites of mine, is taking care of my worms, and even helped my hair to grow back after I inherited a bad case of ring worm. She is the best, and so is her team. My human mom even says she wishes she could go to Lyndale Animal Hospital for her doctor. Can't wait to see them again in a few months. Meow,-Marlo Read Less

10 out of 5 stars.I haven't even BEEN here yet and I know I'm not going anywhere else now. My dog had an upset gut that began to panic me. My regular vet told me I should bring her in and I was bracing myself for $$$$, but the appointment was later in the day and I wanted to see if someone could look at her sooner.Enter LAH. When I called I was told they were booked until Monday, but upon hearing the panic in my voice, the person on the phone checked and offered me a same day appointment that was later than the one I had booked with the other clinic. But not only was I touched that she found someone to make room for me, she then went on to ask me what was happening and gave me STELLAR advice. I ended up keeping my dog at home and following the advice and my dog is totally fine now. So not only was the person on the other end kind and humane, but she saved me a lot of money. Wow. I don't know what to say or how to properly express my gratitude for Lyndale Animal Hospital and their amazing staff and Doctors. We recently moved to uptown and were looking for a new vet. We had previously gone to a national-chain Vet inside a well known pet store. Although they were ok, we never knew how good it could be until we got to LAH. At the previous place we felt like we were walking in to a cash registered disguised as a vet during each visit. I know like many people, we considered our dogs close members of the family, children basically, and want their health handled by professionals who care, not large corporations. Our dogs were in for their annual checkup at LAH when a tumor was discovered on Judy, our black lab. It was a mast cell tumor and needed to be removed. This meant surgery, anesthesia, recovery, medication and potentially more treatment depending on what the lab results of the tumor came back as. Of course our minds ran to scary places and just the thought of Judy going under anesthesia was a lot to take in. From the diagnoses, all the way through, the staff at LAH, and especially Dr. Koppy, took their time to answer our questions, call us back, follow up, answer more questions, and so on. At no point did we ever feel rushed or that Judy's operation was just one of many happening that they were handling. They really held our hands and their spirit and thoughtfulness was as impressive as their medical skills.  As if all of this wasn't enough, their pricing is extremely competitive. We have never been through a surgery before so we called around to get a second opinion/estimate (our previous vet wouldn't even give us an estimate over the phone. not even a range. not a good sign), but others did and LAH was the best!We love our dogs dearly and feel so lucky that we found LAH! Truly. My wife and I were total wrecks through this whole ordeal and could not have made it without their level of professionalism and kindness. They deserve their 5 star rating if not more. We have found our Minnesota vet for life! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I hope you know the impact you've had on our family and how grateful we are. Read Less

This animal clinic is nothing but outstanding. Dr. Grindle, in particular, is some kind of pet guru. I don't know what kind of voodoo he's using, but anytime he's handling one of my very anxious animals, they calm down immediately and relax, making their medical appointments much less traumatic. The level of expertise of these veterinarians and vet technicians only rivals their obvious love for all the animal species. They seem to be able to make accommodations for all kinds of personalities and abilities. The staff are friendly, competent, and kind. The medical care is spot-on. They intuitively sense not only the animals' preferences but the owners' as well. I believe in minimal medicine to manage the health of my cats, and Dr. Grindle has offered me alternative therapies to help my feline cope with extreme anxiety instead of forcibly prescribing costly and potentially dangerous pharma solutions. I used to live very close to this vet, so I began to take my dogs here out of convenience.  After moving further away, I chose to stick with them because I've had nothing but good service. My little Mouse (dog) was a tiny thing, and one of the problems with being a tiny dog is that tiny dogs have tiny mouths and tiny teeth that get food stuck in them.  The tiny teeth are very hard to keep clean even with regular brushing, and by the time she was seven years old or so, her tiny mouth smelled like a crowded fish market on a hot summer's day.  The vet we worked with was very friendly and though I had originally worried that I would be silently judged on the condition of my dog's mouth, he didn't make me feel like a terrible owner for it.  He explained that it's very common for dogs her size to have tooth problems, especially if they were badly bred (and she was from a puppy mill). They ended up removing almost all her teeth (three remained), and I was terrified of what the bill was going to look like... but it ended up being quite affordable.Mouse has since passed away, but she was always quite happy to go to the vet because everyone treated her so nicely.I also appreciate that when my dog Echo needed her Rabies vaccine, they just took her into the back and gave it to her, rather than charging me an office visit.  That may be standard procedure at most vets, but I've always had to pay for a visit at the other places I've been. One of my favorite things is that the vets do not talk down to me.  They speak to me as an equal and answer all my questions/respond to all my comments respectfully, which isn't something I can say for all the other vets I've visited.I've never felt as though they've guilted me into unnecessary tests for my pets, either.  They try to find the cheapest yet most effective way to get answers if something is going wrong.Great place, and I plan on continuing to choose this hospital for my furry friends. I am now an animal owner expert but a few years ago when I got my kitty I had no idea how to choose a vet. Luckily yelp helped me choose this place and I couldn't be happier! The staff is extremely friendly and thoughtful. They really care about your pet, and are very knowledgable. The vets will explain everything in detail and answer any questions. The vets all have their own pets which makes the random concerns I have seem silly since they can relate. My cat, like most pets, freaks at the vet, the vets have been able to keep her calm while she is getting her examination. The last time I went in I was worried my cat was sick, but Dr. Grindle not only assured me she was fine, gave me a website to research cat diseases, and gave me the choice of procedure, suggesting the cheapest option. Boy, was I relieved, and my cat is doing just fine. The annual exam is about $60 for my cat and the shots are about $15 each, to me this is relatively cheap especially since it is only once a year. I have been to other vets with my family and they were much more expensive, cold,  and often pushed products and procedures on the owner. Not here, they told me I was doing a great job keeping my cat healthy, never push anything, and tell Penny she is pretty. Definitely suggest this place especially if you live around Uptown. Read Less

I brought Cat Mulder to Lyndale Animal Hospital to get neutered, because my friends said this place was reasonably priced. I'd like to know what this was reasonably priced compared to....because I've already spent $400 on the cat. This covered shots, the feline leukemia test and neutering. I still have another $100 worth of shots for this little kitty!!!Aside from the price, however, the place was great. But I'd really hope so, in dropping $400 at a place. But the customer service was exceptional, probably because Cat Mulder is such an adorable cat. The vet and receptionist fell for him, and seemingly took good care of him. He was a little traumatized when I picked him up though, and they had put a cat cone on his neck, which drove him nuts....I'll definitely be going back again, to get those shots....it's a lot of money to pay for, but I don't have a car so I couldn't explore cheaper options further from the city. Lyndale Animal Hospital

Minneapolis, Minnesota

2544 Lyndale Avenue South
Minneapolis Minnesota 55405

I've been coming here with my medium sized dog for seven years. They are friendly and give top quality care. I tried another vet for a while because they offered less expensive teeth cleaning--what a mistake! My dog ended up getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which we attended to for months...

For this, I am grateful, because it means I'm being listened to and my beliefs are respected.I absolutely trust this clinic with the lives of my furry family members. Read Less
